I'll start off by saying that I didn't hire John... yet. John came over to my house a few months ago when I was going through a quote spree from local companies to build a nice deck in my backyard. He was easy to understand, he listened to our vision, and he broke the job down into two parts, the upper and lower half of the yard. The review is for the customer service (not the actual deck replacement). I just reached out to the company with a prompt reply to setup an an appointment to discuss. In briefly brainstorming over text with them, I was trying to understand the difference between waterproofing and trex. They let me know they only do trex if that's what I would want to move forward with. As we we were leaning towards trex, I thought this would still be a great option. Minutes later, I receive a text they no longer want to proceed with even discussing this project as it would be a headache? This is without any discussion or seeing the property. I am not quite sure why the abrupt reply without further consultation as I was very interested in the service. We wanted to redo our front yard to make it more accessible, as we have a wheelchair user in the family. We decided to make a deck over our current concrete patio and small grass yard. We contacted John and he came over several times to help us figure out what we wanted. He had great suggestions and in fact helped us figure out much better ways to make the deck than we were originally thinking. We changed our minds a few times during the initial planning and John was very patient and helpful through that process. We hired John for a smallish project and he and his crew delivered on time, on budget and suggested some project tweaks that made the project even better. * He and his team prepped the site and and had materials show up the day before so they could start right away on the start date. * Even though the project was smallish in size, the workmanship was excellent. The deck might just outlast the house. * John accommodated our request for a treated wood retaining wall (to prevent erosion) and to add chicken wire (to keep rodents and small animals out). * He gave us a very fair price. * John proposed the deck lighting and prepped a pvc conduit and outlet so the electrician just had to run the wiring. * The crew was organized and tidy and took care of small things like surplus lumber and packaging waste materials so we could just toss it in the trash. I finally decided to clean up my back yard, and contacted John for an estimate on a Trex deck and wood/cable fence.  John came over on a weekend morning to take measurements and promptly got back to me via text with a materials and labor estimate.  The labor rate was very fair and it turned out that his material estimate was very accurate.  We set a time in January for him to begin, and even though it rained off and on the first week, John was able to make progress on most days.  He was great about staying in touch and answered all my questions.  As with any construction project, there were curveballs here and there, but he came up with great solutions for all issues.  All and all, John did a great job, and I am already saving to have him come back and rebuild my arbor.  Only downside to all this is the deck and fence look so great I am going to have to spend my weekends landscaping around the deck to do it justice! read more

My deck was a bit complicated because it is 20 feet in the air above a sloping yard and also because I chose to use several different glass railing systems. Not a problem. 2.5 stars We had a cable fence put up at the edge of our yard. The structure was good, and everything happened quickly and efficiently. We had issues with the paint bubbling. When we contacted him, his response was defensive and he told us that the paint we got was the problem. He eventually offered to re-paint the bubbling part *IF* we bought another brand (even after paint experts from both paint brands confirmed that the application was the problem). We opted to deal with it on our own rather than have him do it reluctantly. There are also chunks of wood from the project that either fell or were tossed into our canyon, and we were left with trash bags and debris (like nails) to take care of. So, the summary of our experience was: + good fence and it was schedule/built efficiently - more expensive to have someone else come in to repaint properly, and not very good customer relations or follow up post completion. ******There doesn't seem to be a mechanism for me to reply to the comment, so I will do that here: Yes, I did not put up the review until now because I work full time and have twin toddlers - so I have been busy. To my knowledge there is not a time limit for reviewing experiences. As you know, the paint issue that I described happened within week of the project, so the time that has passed is irrelevant. John came out and offered a ton of great advice...understanding exactly what we were looking for. The new deck is up to code and as maintenance free as possible (it was obvious that I didn't keep up on maintenance on the old deck!). We went with Trex Select and all treated lumber for the rest. Our build involved a second story deck, had to ensure that the roof eaves were supported during construction, scaffolding, etc... John had it all sorted out with no issues. I love the fact that John doesn't mark up materials. We placed a bulk order that I paid for and then he gave me receipts for all miscellaneous material expenses.
