I love seeing all the new spots popping up in the Berryessa area in the vicinity of the BART station. While it's not quite the urban village it can be yet, it's moving in the right direction. Sam & Curry is a part of that positive change. Of all the possible spots to try, I came here specifically because it participates in American Airlines Dining Rewards Program, allowing me to earn 5x miles per dollar spent in addition to my regular credit card points earnings. The best way to describe this spot is that it's Chipotle but with Indian food. You can can pick between a bowl or a burrito and instead of chicken or carne asada, you can select from chicken tikka or other Indian items. In this way, it's a refreshing change from Chipotle. I think the portions are generous. Whether you enjoy this place will really come down to how you feel about the flavors. To each their own. But this is definitely a spot worth checking out that adds vibrancy to the neighborhood! read more

We ordered a rice bowl with chicken tikka, basmati rice, garbanzo beans, corn, fajita veggies, and we topped it it with tamarind chutney and yogurt. The bowl and lemonade were reasonably priced and everything was fresh. The chicken was tender but the garbanzo beans were the star, with curry/tikka flavors. Everything was healthy and tasty. Then you pick vegetables curries - chickpea or potato. Fajita veggies are available too. Then you choose your proteins - chicken curry, lamb curry, chicken tikka, paneer tikka, saag or lentil curry. We choose lamb curry and I did 1/2 chicken curry and 1/2 paneer tikka. Then toppings between salsas, chutneys, yogurt, lettuce. We got a mango lassi and papadam. Everything was flavorful. I really enjoyed the food - especially the lentil bowl with chana masala, lentils, potato filling, vegetable rice, chutneys (green and medium-hot), and corn. As a vegan (and lactose intolerant), I let the server know I can't have dairy (cream, butter, etc.). While the server tried to help, there was some confusion between vegan vs. vegetarian options, so I just hope what I ordered was indeed dairy-free. Suggestion: clearer vegan labeling (not just vegetarian "VG") and allergy notes (dairy, gluten, etc.) on the menu/website would make the dining experience even better for people with dietary restrictions. I swear, my food weighed like 3-5 lbs with the insane portions. They packed my order to the brim, regardless of one entree being free. Each entree could be two meals worth! They do not skimp on the spices! There is a lot of flavors into the bowl: garlic, ginger, spicy chutney, chili, corn, fajita veggies, salsa, and lettuce. I eat Indian food fairly regularly, but this truly packed a punch. You can pick an assortment of toppings via DoorDash. The lamb is tender complemented by the spiciness of the curry. The chickpeas and potato added a mellow layer of the bowl, below the heaps of chutney on top. The ambiance is really chill, like many other Yelpers said, resembling Chipotle. The seems like a cross between chipotle and Indian food and it was really good and the portions were so big that it lasted me another two meals! I've ordered this a few times and all 3 times the burrito was rolled so inconsistently. As you can see in the picture attached, one side of the burrito is just plain layers of tortilla. So the consistency of the bite sometimes results in just more bread which is not ideal. In addition, I was eating more potato than chicken. So please be fair on the portions too. I want to preface this review by saying the taste of their food was good, but there are real safety issues with their food and how it's prepared, as well as how they handle the safety issues when it's brought up. I ordered a chicken tika bowl from them for lunch, picked up and went home. As I was eating it, I noticed a steel wire in my bowl, about 1.5 inches long. Now I always chew my food and eat it slow, so I wasn't really affected or hurt by the wire; but knowing how long and sharp this thing is, it's definitely possible someone might get seriously hurt if they're not as careful. I called the store, telling the employee there's a wire in my food and they should investigate and throw out whichever ingredients that came with wire packaging and might be affected. The lady named Delma didn't understand me at first, keeping on asking me which salsa she wrongfully put in my food. I asked her to get someone that speaks English, and she just hung up. I called again, explaining I'm not trying to ask for a refund, but rather warn them about the potential safety issues that might cause serious injury if not handled appropriately; she seemed to understand at least the issue is about the food, but told me she's the only one in store that speaks a little English. I asked her for her manager's number, to which she answered she had no manager. I told her to investigate and / or throw out the food, which she refused and told me to call back later, but what if someone already bought and ate the food with embedded wires?! It just pissed me off that I was trying to warn them about food safety and all they did was brush me off. All of this was under the best case assumption that the wire came from food packaging. What if it's from something else, something even more dangerous? All that is to say, I wouldn't go back to Sam & Curry after this visit. That is not to say their food doesn't taste good; in fact, it really does which is why I kept coming back. But is it worth it to potentially get hurt? Absolutely not. read more

The idea is good. A Chipotle style fast food restaurant with Indian food. I got the Tikka masala bowl and while it was a few steps below the quality of a proper Indian restaurant it hit the spot. Inside it was spacious and the service was pretty good, about what you'd expect from a fast food joint. Parking is pretty easy and my overall experience was good. That said, I probably would stick to sit down restaurants in the future when I'm in the mood for Indian. I believe the owner was the one that made my bowl. It reminded me of the chipotle assembly line. The ambiance was nice and well decorated.
