I'd give this place 4 stars for the wine and 2 stars for the atmosphere…read more I was excited when I saw this place from the outside. It looks like an old barn, and you could see the vines as soon as you drove in. There was also a nice seating area to the side. Unfortunately it was too cold to sit outside, so we made our way in. The tasting room is small and unassuming, though the staff was friendly and personable. After our tastings, we went into the seating area. There was really nothing to it-some old couches and tables that looked second hand, concrete floors, and a bathroom that had a portapotty inside (yuck). Overall, it felt like an old, cold basement where you didn't really want to hang out. On the plus side, the wine was really good. I rarely go to wineries in Ohio and enjoy each wine in the tasting, but I did here. My mom and I even want to go back before the holidays to buy some bottles as gifts-that's how much we liked it. Overall, I'd say the wine makes this place worthwhile, but come when it's warm and sit outside or take your wine to go.

A Long Overdue Return to Mastropietro Winery…read more We finally made it back to Mastropietro Winery after seven years--and what a perfect day for it. It was a quiet winter afternoon, but with a surprising twist: a hot and sunny 77-degree day that felt more like early summer than mid-winter. Naturally, we took advantage of the weather and enjoyed our wine outside, soaking in the sunshine and peaceful atmosphere. I realized I'd never taken a photo in front of the iconic Mastropietro sign--so this visit felt long overdue in more ways than one. We sampled several wines during our visit, and I was really impressed. The Vidal Blanc stood out right away--off-dry, estate-grown, with just a touch of oak that gave it a subtle, elegant complexity. The Riesling was bright and delicious, and the Cabernet was smooth and easy to enjoy. But the real star for me was the Chambourcin--absolutely fantastic! If I heard correctly, it's 100% Chambourcin and estate-grown as well, which made it all the more special. Mastropietro continues to impress, and this visit reminded me why it's such a gem. Cheers to great wine, unexpected weather, and coming back to places that feel like home.

The first time we visited, they'd run out of clean wine glasses and had to wait for the bartender…read moreto wash them by hand. Yep, a wine bar with not enough glasses. OK, whatever, they were busy. We were overcharged for our wine by a $1, but we let that go. The thing that annoyed me most was that they weren't even serving wine in the right glasses. There are red wine glasses and there are white wine glasses; You're a wine bar - serve it in the proper glass. So maybe it's just that one night when there was a crowd. Sadly, no. Went after work last week and only four other patrons. The three guys hanging out with owner all had red wine in red wine glasses, but the guy next to me got red wine in a white wine glass. So apparently they're just clueless. Or perhaps they were saving all the red wine glasses for friends of the owner. As far as wine selection, thumbs down. Maybe 20 whites, total. There are many, many restaurants with better selections, such as Papa Joe's, the Bistro in Kent, that will even serve your wine in the right wine glass -- imagine that! To be honest, I don't get the sense that they're taking their business seriously, more like, "Hey, let's open a wine bar! We don't know jack about wine or the service industry, but it couldn't possibly be THAT hard, right? We'll print up the wine lists on the home computer and put them in these 3 prong cardboard folders left over from when the kids were in middle school. Piece of cake."

For dessert I got the almond raspberry cake and I felt like the sweetness was perfect. It was one of my favorite almond cakes I have had out here. My favorite appetizer was their Brussels sprouts. I wish I would have ordered a side of the sauce because that's what made it good. You have to order on your phone and I recommend to not show up hungry because if you're seated in the vineyards room, their wifi shows up sporadically and you have to quickly click it before it goes away. We did like that there was no server but wish they got a wifi extender or just better wifi to make it easier on the clients. For the bad. I ordered the mushroom pizza which didn't have much flavor to it. It felt like it was missing something. The best way to describe it is bland. We also ordered the truffle fries which were ok.... I don't think they deserve to have the name truffle on there. I was excited for the food because people have raved about it but maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. Overall the place is ok. I can find good desserts and food anywhere else for a better price but I'm glad I came once.

Very modern and doesn't really feel like a church. It's a huge space. The building itself was a little confusing to navigate. Since it's housed in an old church, it wasn't obvious which entrance to use, and the main doors weren't open. (Answer: The entrance is through the closed patio.) Once inside, there wasn't a host or clear signage explaining whether guests should seat themselves or order at the counter, so we spent a few seconds trying to figure out how everything worked. As someone who appreciates clear direction when visiting a new place, it made for a slightly awkward first impression. The service was fine. This was my first time trying mead, so I was hoping for a little more guidance. The bartender was attentive and made sure we had what we needed, so I wouldn't say the service was bad. However, the experience felt a bit hands-off.
