A Long Overdue Return to Mastropietro Winery We finally made it back to Mastropietro Winery after seven years--and what a perfect day for it. It was a quiet winter afternoon, but with a surprising twist: a hot and sunny 77-degree day that felt more like early summer than mid-winter. Naturally, we took advantage of the weather and enjoyed our wine outside, soaking in the sunshine and peaceful atmosphere. I realized I'd never taken a photo in front of the iconic Mastropietro sign--so this visit felt long overdue in more ways than one. We sampled several wines during our visit, and I was really impressed. The Vidal Blanc stood out right away--off-dry, estate-grown, with just a touch of oak that gave it a subtle, elegant complexity. The Riesling was bright and delicious, and the Cabernet was smooth and easy to enjoy. But the real star for me was the Chambourcin--absolutely fantastic! If I heard correctly, it's 100% Chambourcin and estate-grown as well, which made it all the more special. Mastropietro continues to impress, and this visit reminded me why it's such a gem. Beautiful is the operative word for this place. All you NE Ohio Yelpers who do wineries up your way, come on down. This place is worth a taste. Check the website for a map. There are signs off I-76. New, elegant architecture grabs you as you walk in. There's plenty of seating inside. Individual tastings are possible, but I'd suggest the sampler platter. You get a taste of all their wines for about $6.50. Seating outside is an option as well and a good one at that when the weather is nice. The vineyards, such as they are, can be seen from the patio area, along with a pond and a nice wooded area. If you care for live jazz/folk music while sipping, you'll want to make the trip on Friday or Saturday, get there before 6PM and sit outside. Parking appears to be just less than adequate if they get busy (read: Saturday evening). As for the wines, well, I've had a few in the Lake Erie region of Ohio and these are some of the best. Although I can't say definitively, they don't appear to be using any of their own grapes. I suspect they're buying grapes/juice. My recommendation is the Chardonnay. Very buttery, dry and a smooth finish. My wife's recommendation is the Riesling. This is a dry Riesling, with, as the tasting guide indicates, a crisp finish. I thought it had a bit of a fizz to it. Finally, as I'm not a fan of Ohio reds, this place didn't change my mind, but I found the Dolce Rosso to be a nice dessert red. I think slightly chilled would be the best option here. There is a light menu, but the food is quite good. I've had the chicken, pulled pork and sausage sandwiches. All were very good. They came with the classic deli accompaniments, pickle spear and potato chips. Although I didn't get one, the cheese trays looked dreadful but a patron at the bar indicated that the Stuffed Hot banana pepper with Chorizo sausage & marinara was very good. You'll find an interesting mix of folks from the Escalade set to the college double-daters to forty-somethings like myself to the occasional line worker at GM Lordstown. Watching the crowd can be just as fun as anything else here. read more

I love visiting wineries in other states. My trip to Ohio this past weekend was fantastic. My local friends took me to this amazing Winery, all I can say is I wish it was summer time because the place is absolutely beautiful. Great outside seating of course it was too cold to do that but none the less appealing to the eye. I also love how in different states they do things completely differently for instance, instead of a wine flight which is what we're used to hearing New York just like beer, I got little plastic shot cups for my tasting for $0.50. Which I have to say I did not hate as an avid White Wine Drinker I tasted all of them except the Chardonnay and they were all pretty tasty. I came home with Vidal Blanc, which was friity, dry, amd just delicious! One of the owners was also walking around grading everybody which was really nice there was a couple singing in the corner, a very relaxed atmosphere, I will definitely go back my next visit. We've been to a number of Ohio wineries and this is the first one that had what we consider to be a drinkable wine (unless you happen to be among those who like to drink kool aid or soda pop masquerading as wine) . How drinkable? Our two couples enjoyed three bottles of their featured Riesling... and considered buying another to take home. Our guests were visiting from Maryland and along with us on a perfect summer evening, we enjoyed the outside grounds along with two excellent food trucks, a nice little musical combo, and of course the wine. Pleasant and efficient staff, plenty of parking, lots of outside seating options including six fire pits, umbrella tables, a pavilion and more. We will be back. read more

Mastropietro Winery is set back from the road and the vineyard runs on either side of the driveway. The building is somewhat modern and has fire pits with seating along the front. There is also outdoor seating under a gazebo and another covered area. It is another reason to look forward to summer. At the entrance, you can choose to sit in the left section, which has table seating, muted lighting and a small stage platform for live music. The right section is where the tasting room is as well as more table seating and a stone fireplace. The atmosphere was relaxing and inviting. The wines were good here. I had the cabernet which had tones of blackberry, chocolate and a nice finish. We share a fontinella cheese with crackers and it was well paired with the wine. We could still hear the music from the other room, but the noise level was good for conversation. I look forward to going back. read more

For my 100th review, I'm glad that this is it. Where to begin? We had an amazingly good time at this local winery. My wife and went with fellow Yelper! Bill M and his wife, my wife's other Aunt and Uncle her cousin and her husband. We were there to celebrate Bill M.'s wife's birthday. This particular night was the clambake put on by The Fifth Season restaurant. This place is situated on 52 acres of land with a pond and the vineyards. The way the winery is set up is that they are open Thurs-Sun. On Fri. and Sat., The Fifth Season cooks from their out door tent (weather permitting) On Thurs. and Sun., you are permitted to bring your own picnic basket. When we arrived, we paid for our clambake tickets and found our seats. The seating is several picnic tables with views of the vineyards and the pond. They also have a large gazebo with more picnic tables inside. You will also find many gas fire pits located throughout the seating areas of which come in handy for them crisp autumn nights. The wine. They offer sixteen varieties all of which are made on sight. You can purchase their sampler of which comes with one ounce shots of each wine they have or purchase by the glass or by the bottle. They are relatively new so Bill M. told me that they were making the wine from juice but they may be producing from their own vineyards by now. We had a few bottles of which were the Dolce Bianco and the Dolce Rosso. Both were very good if you like the sweeter side of wine with the Bianco being the better of the two in my opinion. They were priced at $11.00 per bottle. They have Sangria of which I thought was good but some thought it was just OK. They also offer beer, bottled water and pop. With your purchase, you can order small cheeses plates or shrimp cocktail and three different types of crackers. The menu was a buffet style set up. The tickets were $25 in advance and $28 at the door. You began with the salad and clam chowder. The main course was a dozen steamed clams, baked half of chicken, thin sliced marinated steak strips, bleu cheese mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes and corn of the cob. Anyone wishing for a whole lobster could have it for an extra $25-market price. The food was great but see review update for more detailed description. The have a small gift shop to purchase items with their logo on it. The staff is friendly and attentive. Beware; it can be busy so prepare to wait in line. We went there for my moms birthday and I was not impressed at all. The only good thing about the place is the beautiful outdoor area. But on the other hand, there's a $10 card minimum (otherwise you better have cash... I don't know just feels sneaky to me...) and "happy hour" is 50¢ off domestic bottle beer which has me rolling my eyes. Everything is way overpriced and the food menu options include like 4 things (no vegetarian or keto options) with no flexibility on side choices (chips or nothing basically). Not our favorite place on the wine tour! We were enjoying a romantic glass of wine (very average) by the fire place, as it is a very chilly fall day (55 degrees)! All of a sudden the fire goes out...so asked the owner if he could turn it back on...."I've got the air on, but can close the windows!" Yes he actually said that and yes, had the windows open with air on! Really? Didn't know natural gas was so expensive it was worth sacrificing customer comfort!! Although he did then go out and put on the gas fires outside! I'm total confused and all a loss! Won't be back! Can at least drink average over priced wine at other places that are comfortable and care about their customers satisfaction!!!!! read more

To whom this may concern: Last Saturday myself and a guest had visited "Bens" in Berlin Center..My friend and I had a couple of glasses of your Dolce Rosso of which the 1st glass was excellent... unlike the 2nd which was not completely processed!!! The bottom of the wine glass was filled with either "Fining Agents" or "Crystalize Sugar !!! I do believe the waitresses name was Maggie...which she had said it like that all the time!!! I had already purchased a bottle for guests I was having for St. Patrick's Day doing.. ..that bottle was the worst....with sediments of sugar or Fining agents....Very,Very Embarrest in front of my guest...Too say the least!!! This review is strictly for the the Balloon Festival. We got in our car at 6:20 and finally out of the parking lot at 7:15. Absolutely absurd to have a large event like this with no one directing traffic. Watched kids walking to their cars and almost getting run over by angry patrons trying to find a way out. The food was overpriced. Debonne has a much more organized event. My kids put it best, "worst time ever." read more

My friend and I went to Lake Milton for the day to relax and visit some wineries in the area. This was our last stop and it was really good! We did a tasting inside and both got a glass of wine to enjoy. We took our wine outside and sat under the gazebo. It was a perfect June afternoon, and as soon as we got under the gazebo a thunderstorm rolled through. We were the only two under there, put our feet up on the chairs at our table and relaxed and enjoyed the storm. The food here was amazing as well as we stayed for dinner. An amazing setting perfect for an evening with friends. Although there is much room for improvement with regard to the actual wine tasting experience. There is a cost of 50 cents for each sample which is poured into a small plastic cup, much like a medicine cup. Which makes the tasting experience very poor. The staff pouring the wine made no attempt to discuss the wine being poured. I had no idea where the grapes were from. How they were barreled. She basicly filled the little plastic cups and walked away. I was very disappointed. With that said some of their red wines were fairly solid, and I enjoyed them. The red blend and sangiovesse had a pleasant nose and nice body for a medium dry red. The riesling was crisp and clean for a semi sweet white... Very well done. All of wines have a reasonable price point... Especially the whites. Over all I would recommend comming to the winery for the atmosphere but do not expect much as a wine tasting experience. read more

Been here a few times now: once to check it out, once for an event (local BBQ joints were out there), and once for a party being held there. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. Inside is charming/quaint and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful with wine selection. I'm not a big wine drinker- I have a glass every so often- but I know sweet wines aren't as popular so there's not a lot of those to choose from (at least the times I was there as selection varies on time of year). Loved to come here on summer evenings to sit outside by their lake and have a glass of wine. Fire pits would start up after dark. Live music was usually there visiting on weekends, which was usually a solo singer/guitar player. I'm almost never a live music fan, but I always loved the music here. Bottles of wine in the $17-$25 range, all excellent. The Fifth Season would often cater and the food was amazing. Make sure to buy a bag of whiskey sticks, they'll change your life. One of my most absolute favorite places of all time. They have 15 different wines, to which all are made on the property by Mr. Mastropietro. Three of the wines are made using estate-grown grapes that you drive back through upon entrance of the facility: Vidal Blanc, Chambourcin, & Frontenac. All other grapes come from California. The wines are offered by taste, glass, or bottle & there is a great range of dry to sweet to please everyone. Some of the specialties here include sangria by the pitcher, the most refreshing wine slushies, a Frontenac port, the best blackberry fruit wine around, and local craft beers as well as a few common domestic beers on draft. For their snack menu everything is offered a-la-carte; cheese, pepperoni, crackers. It's all packaged from the distributor like if you were to purchase it at the grocery store that way it stays fresh. The staff equips you with all necessary plates, napkins, & cutlery for these snacks. If you're down for suggestions & love to try crazy combinations I highly suggest getting the spicy beer cheese spread & dipping whiskey stix (special pretzels) in it...also accompany that with a glass, or hey even better, a bottle of Chambourcin red wine. You'll thank me later. The owners at this establishment are amazing people, god bless them & god bless this remote gem of a winery. I visited and had a horrible experience. The staff member inside who waited on me was snotty and didn't act like she wanted to wait on me. She didn't even give me wine glasses. Then, when I left, I stopped up at the front because someone I drove to the winery left something in my car. I stepped on two rocks to get through their flower bed to drop the item off because I was in a hurry and a staff member came over with a forced, rude smile and asked me not to walk through the gardening. She made a scene. I felt as though I was very careful and considerate and the staff was rude all evening. read more
