There's a rumor going around that all the Bukharian restaurants in Queens have the same menu. That's simply not true! Salut has a much smaller menu as compared to the rest that have the standard array of salads (Pickled vegetable, Carrot: Morkovcha), soups (Lagman, Shurpa, Pelmeni), appetizers (Samsa, Manti, Cheburecki), and a dozen shish kebabs across chicken, lamb, beef, and veal. But don't get deceived by that - as they've only bothered to print the Shish kebabs on the menu. You can still order all the other items as well, including Hummus and the Lepeshka bread. So, ask and ye shall find. I wish I could say something inspiring about the restaurant, other than the fact that the language barrier was the lowest across all the other Bukharian restaurants I've eaten in the city. I was about to avoid any negative comment on the food, but then I remembered that they had something on the short menu that described how juicy the chicken kebabs were, given their unique style of cooking. Hands down best meat I ever had in my life ! Truly authentic place that can only be found in NY (outside of former USSR of course )! As far Bukharian Kebabs go, they are excellent. The cuisine here is very focused towards kebabs but they also serve lots of other stuff, like a spicy carrot salad, noodle-ish soup with meat, etc. It's actually all very good and reminds me of a day spent at the grill. However, if you've eaten there you'll notice that they cater to a very specific type of people, and the language barrier you'll encounter can be overwhelming. That said, pointing to what you want on a menu can't hurt. I really enjoy the lamb skewers, chicken w/o bone skewers, the spicy carrot salad known as markovcha with a specialty bread known as leposhka. read more

The food at Salut was amazing. Just remembering the beef kebabs is making my mouth water. I am not a huge fan of lamb, but my friends who like it said the lamb kebabs were excellent as well. Basically, everything we ordered was delicious. Even a simple carrot salad had us all grabbing the platter for seconds. The bread was also delicious. There is a beer on the menu called Baltika which, I learned that day, comes in several varieties denoted by a number. The 9 is the darkest and most flavorful. The others pale in comparison. The 3 is very light. There was one that was like Heineken and one like Corona. I don't remember which one was which. One is the 5 and one is the 7. But seriously, just stick with the 9. I almost forgot the garlic and parsley fries. All fries should be this delicious. Just make sure everyone at your table is eating them. read more

I can only review for takeout but each time the food was delicious. Mind you I've only had the Asian pilaf and lula kebabs. The kebabs are very juicy. Second time I ordered the lula it did seem a bit undercooked for my liking but it was only a little bit that was rare. My husband loves this place and our friends live nearby and it's their "go to" restaurant so whenever we visit, we meet up there. I LOVE international food but this one is alright. This was the first time I've tried Russian food and I haven't' tried other restaurant so I can't tell if this is authentic. The lamb ke-bobs were delicious although it could be juicer. I don't know what it's called (our friend order everything for us) but they look like dumplings, they're stuffed with beef and onions.. they were good. Soup- steak and spicy, they're delicious Their bread was good the first time i went, i had an upset stomach (probably from the fried dumplings or whatever that's called) so the 2nd time i went, i avoid that food and ate everything else and it was fine... went again the 3rd time and fine too... would i go out of my way to that restaurant, no. if i'm in the area but not visiting those friends, would i go back there, no. if my friends want to eat there, sure. i'll go. read more

I came here with some friends for dinner after hearing for ages that Salut served the best Bukharian food in Forest Hills. I had this on good authority from Bukharians themselves. The places was packed on a Sunday at 6, we waited about half an hour for a table. The waitress was nice enough and they even have English menus. They have a bar but are BYOB as well...they do charge a corkage fee which most Bukharian restaurants don't. On to the food. We ordered the fresh salad, french fries and chicken, lamb, lulya and beef kebabs. The fries were the best part, they were really tasty actually. The kebabs were dry, chewy and tasteless. I'm not sure if they don't marinate them properly or they are just straight up using old meat but they were no good at all. I don't get what all the fuss is about. Maybe it was an off night but I'm not coming back anytime soon. read more

I love this place. I go there fairly often. Quite reasonably priced. You can order the kebobs separately, which is great, or as a meal. I usually get them separately, rather than as the meal. That way, I can get a couple of three different meats. Appetizers are exceptional. In the winter, try one of the soups. I find the service friendly and low-key. It's not just like every chain restaurant, but didn't you choose this place because it was a little out of the ordinary (or because you've been eating there for years)? I was first introduced to Bukharian food while living in Tel-Aviv, Israel which has one of the largest Bukharian populations in the world. This place is the real deal, 100% authentic. Go for the plov which is Uzbek rice pilaf cooked with onions, carrots, meat and lots of cumin. The mantu (dumplings filled with minced meat) and samsa (thick doughy pastry...filled with meat) are also pretty tasty. Definitely get the carrot salad as well. You'll need some Uzbek bread, called lepeshka, to accompany all of the goodies. The lamb skewer was good but the beef skewer is straight up ridonculous. My lovely girlfriend remarked that she could eat them every day or the rest of her life. I agreed. Aside from the food, the atmosphere is just how you'd want it. We were the only non Russian speakers in the joint. Soviet era comedy playing on the TV with everyone including the waitresses laughing their asses off. Must have been a classic. Wish I understood Russian... Five appetizers, two skewers, bread, tea and dessert for two people was only like 40 bucks. Can't beat that. Only con is they serve packaged hummus. Sabra is good as far as store bought goes but I wish Salut made their own. Oh well, the place still rocks! read more

Excellent place to eat assortment of shish kebab: veal liver, cows thyroid gland (howrovak), lamb ribs, chicken on the bone, soft chicken, lula kebab, asiss purchee. Let me point out a few things about how to eat some kebab. When you order a liver, the meat is prepared on special charcoal grill. The charcoal gives such a fumes that rhymes with meat. The aroma taste becomes perfect to eat kebab meat. When they serve you liver, you will see some blood. Which is not ideal for kosher menu. Unless you mention; I want my liver to be fully cooked. If your liver is fully cooked, let me warn you, the liver will be somewhat dry and you won't enjoy the meat. It's got to be somewhat juicy to grasp that taste. Medium rear is my preference. Now, little details: when they prep the liver on the sticks, they place fat piece behind every liver chunk and that is done for 2 reasons. First, if your meat served well-done, then, when you start to eat, grab both in one bite fat and liver together. The fat piece will compromise the dry liver with fatty juice that will help you with digestion and the flavor. Second, the fat separates the liver chunks on the stick while cooking on the hot charcoal grill and moistures the ends of chunks not to be stuck to the stick itself and each other. If you see your fat being little crispy it is done to extreme precision that liver stands out medium rare but the fat is little brown crispy color. I consider my chef is an experience and artistic cook. The way to eat this stick: splash some white vinegar and place fresh onion rings on top and enjoy every bite. I had an excellent time here.The waitress served us on time with every dish we order. It was hot and delicious.The place is very friendly they have one amazing offer on the menu that I noticed: if 6 people or more at the table, they will serve your table with one free pitcher of beer. Kabobs are super salty and chock full of fat...as is the shurbah soup. The salad ingredients are soggy and old at best. Their servers are extremely rude and have to be flagged down to bring even a glass of water -- which we asked for several times and we never received. The fries are old and they put crusty garlic paste over them to hide the rancid oil taste. read more

I have been to this restaurant approximately three times usually after my doctor's appointments. The food is very good and fresh. On my first two visits to this restaurant, the service was good. Unfortunately, the last time I visited this restaurant the service was horrible. I was immediately seated when I arrived--which is a good thing. Shortly after I was seated, a large party came in and was seated to the right of me and another group of guests was seated at a table behind me. I ordered a small salad, a lamb kabob and a beef kabob. The table next to me with the large party ordered an array of things all of which I had the privilege of over hearing. The waitstaff brought my salad and tea immediately but did not bring my kabobs for almost an hour. Meanwhile the tables to the right and to my back all received their entire orders ahead of me. When I asked the waitress how much longer it would be before the food arrived she said something inaudible and then went to the back. I could see from where I was seated that she had some type of discussion with the another server. I deduced that one of them had not put in the order. I sat there for another 10 minutes before the mail server came with 1 kebab and then the second kebab. At no point did either of them apologize for the extensive wait. While I ate at the restaurant no one bothered to ask me if I would like a glass of water. No one came around to periodically check to see if I was satisfied or needed anything else. In fact when I was ready to leave, I realized after waiting 15 minutes that the waitress was not going to bring my check. As a result I got up and walked to the front of the restaurant to obtain the bill. Once I reached the front, she still did not speak to me and instead took two other orders ahead of me. Finally I paid and left. While I initially liked this restaurant, I realize that the restaurant may not like me. As a result I will not be going back. Next time I feel like dining on Uzbekistan Cuisine, I will take myself to Nargis Bar and Grill in Park Slope because the food is good and more importantly they appreciate their customers. By customers, I mean ALL of their customers-- even the ones that are not Russian or from Uzbekistan. read more

My mother was here on a Saturday night with some friends and was assaulted, verbally abused and slapped by the owner himself. I want to let people know what kind of business this "man" (or shall I say animal) runs! He should be ashamed of himself for laying a hand on a woman! I wonder if he would hit a man the way he slapped my mother because a man would have punched him in the face like he deserves. My mom managed to throw a cup at him for self defense thank Gd for that! My mother should have called 911 and pressed charges on the spot and I wish she had because this is unacceptable. This is not how people should run their business.
