Returned for a business lunch on Thursday 1/26. Salut needs to figure out that the host person is a guest first impression of a restaurant. The hostess seemed confused as to where to put a table of 4 and (while it wasn't busy when we came in) we had to wait 10 minutes because a) we didn't have a reservation and b) not all of our party was here. Her rudeness and lack of professionalism (including her attire) Was VERY off putting and not what I am used to from Salut . That being said, our lunch was fantastic! The hangar steak was phenomenal, and our server, Dirk, was professional AND hilarious. Attention to detail is VERY important to me, and he was absolutely spot on with everything. It is always nice that a manager stops by to see how your experience is going,too. And you HAVE to have oysters here! Best in the city! As well as their incredible pear torte!!! Incredible atmosphere: Check. 5 stars. Delicious food: Check. 4 stars. Above Average Service: Barely Check. 3 stars. Our culinary adventure started with an amazing range of drinks, service and eclectic French small fare. We got the fries, foie gras mousse and steamed mussels. The mussels were the best in my opinion, they made me reminisce of my European travels. But that is when our visit went a little downhill, we waited quite a while to get more drinks and seemingly forever to get the check later on. I'll probably never go here again partially because I live nowhere near here, but the food is wonderful and I hope that their service only gets better with time. read more

Yes, ze prices for ze cheeseburger are out of zes world, but I don't mind paying a little more for food that is well crafted and tastes awesome (sorry, I don't know any more French). I ended up here by default that Edina Grill had a 20 minute wait for lunch at 1pm on Saturday, while Salut could seat us on the patio immediately. Actually, while the menu can be a tad pricey, they do have some reasonable options on their lunch menu. I had a cup of soup (what was I thinking eating soup, in the sun, on the patio, on a 90+ degree, humid summer day?!), but the corn bisque just sounded too tempting. I didn't regret my decision one bit. My $7.95 meal also came with a half sandwich. I love their chicken salad. It has a great dressing and just the right amount of fruit. Best martini in south Minneapolis! Get the dry ice cosmo. Very yummy and very strong. Makes you feel like you're 21 again. I love the bar here and decided to get small plates recently. The following knocked my socks off: cheese platter, filet mignon tartare, garlic shrimp, sausage with fennel, and the FRENCH FRIES! Best fried ever. Crispy, salty, and they come with hollendaise sauce. Also, if you're still hungry-get a crock of the french onion soup. Great place to share a bottle of wine or get a strong cocktail. Sometimes, just once in a while, I do forget Salut is a corporate restaurant. What I love is the warm batard like loaves of bread (think small baguette), the great frites, and a few other gems on the menu. Where they seem to struggle is going off the menu a bit or something a little more difficult. The poutine had such promise, gravy was pretty close to perfect, if not a tad salty, BUT clumps of cold (and I mean cold) chicken careless tossed on there, and cheese curds lacking that squeakiness also cold. So, you have fries and gravy cooled down by the dry giant chunks of chicken, and cheese curds. So close... What French place doesn't have a duck confit...? I digress, happy hour is good, bar is cozy, and some great cocktails along with a decent wine list. Meghan may not have been the perfect bartender for Sunday brunch but she was sweet and fun. One of my favorite burger/sandwich condiments is carmelized onions, so I had a tough time choosing between the two or three options on the Salut menu that come with onions. I opted for the steak sandwich and I seriously needed a moment of silence to appreciate the rich, carmel onion flavor party on my tastebuds. I could have eaten those onions all by themselves with a spoon. Combined with the tender chunks of steak, melted swiss chesse and frissee on a soft squishy bun, I was briefly sent to a world of sandwich nirvana. Loved. It. Served with fries on the side in their own little tin, I was a happy girl. Going back to the start of the meal, we shared the baked brie - which turned out to be a fancy French version of a cheese curd - coated in panko and melty on the inside. I'm actually not a big fan of cold or room temperature brie, but heat it up and I'm good to go. It's served with crostini and a few slices of apple - I could have used more of both because we ran out of dippers before the cheese was gone. Good, but I think I'd try a different appetizer next time. I took Emily S.'s suggestion and ordered the blackberry mojito (or was it a martini?) and she's right - it's delicious. Very nicely balanced between the fresh mint and tart berry. Fair warning - it's strong, but I'm not complaining. We visited mid-week around 6 or so and were able to make Open Table reservations online with no trouble within an hour beforehand. Service was friendly and fast. The patio looked great, but sadly it was full when we arrived. We came for burgers this time, but the steak and seafood offerings were mighty tempting and surely warrant another visit. read more

Oh, I love it. I just... love it. There's something about the way dining at Salut makes me feel - maybe it's the music, or the red booths, or the fact that they do a page out of 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking' every Monday, or the "good", "better", "best" in French on their wine labels behind their bar. It's hard to nail down the one aspect that I most adore. But the good thing is that I don't have to - because my heart has more than enough room for all of my Salut love. Did you know that they send over amuse-bouche before your meal? Just because. Because Salut knows how to make their customers feel special. One brunch they served tiny blueberry smoothie shooters. Another time, they brought out hot cinnamon popovers. And, while I'm not certain whether it's still on the menu, Salut offered "Le Continental" for breakfast - a flaky, buttery croissant, with a side of fruit and a latte for about $7. It was precisely the right amount of the perfect combinations of flavors - I felt full, but not stuffed. Their raw oyster menu is divided into East Coast and West Coast specimens - for those of you who have a preference. Possessing an unrefined palate, I chose East Coast because I recently went to Maine (and for no other reason) - and although I usually try not to eat seafood in a landlocked state, my gamble paid off. My mouth waters just remembering the twist of lemon, the tang of cocktail sauce, and the snap of horseradish from my last experience at Salut. We marveled at the portion size of the mussels off of the dinner menu, though they might have used less butter and more citrus. Service here has never been a problem for me. The staff has always tended to my water glass, my condiment needs, and even my napkin - all without needing to be told. With easy ramp parking and location around the corner from the Edina Cinema, Salut is one of my favorite places to hit; while dinner and a drink will set you back between $25-45 depending on what you order, it's worth it when you've got something special to celebrate or someone special to impress. read more

Hands down one of my favorite restaurants period. Have yet to experience anything like it in Chicago, and miss it terribly. Great food, great pomme frites, great bread and the BEST hot chocolate I have ever had in my entire life. I have only been for lunch or dinner. I had wanted to eat here for quite some time. The fiance and I brought our kids for brunch. What to order? Everything sounded delicious- but decisions must be made. I ordered the BUrger with the carmelized onions and french onion soup with a side salad. It was delicious and a reasonable price (but I wouldn't have paid more). I also ordered the Cafe Mocha. With all of its warm milk and cocoa goodness, I almost thought it was hot cocoa but there was that hint of coffee flavor. The cafe mocha came with 2 sugar cubes (why? I'm not sure) and a shortbread cookie. The cup it was served in was more like a bowl. I loved to drink in all of its warm goodness. We opted for the cheeseburger for our toddler and asked for a side of fruit vs. the fries. The fruit was a good choice. I wish I could say the same for the cheeseburger- I think it was a bit overcooked for a toddler- ours hardly touched it and he LOVES his cheeseburgers ('With Ketchup and mustard!" as he likes to say.) My fiance ordered a chicken sandwich, which I tried but didn't love as much as my burger. Must. Go. Back. Must. Order. French Onion Burger. Went here for a birthday and it was definitely a good choice. Had no troubles making the reservation for 7 a few days prior and our table was setup and they were ready for us as soon as we arrived. I've had too many instances of having reservations only to still have to wait for them to clear a spot when we arrive so it's always nice having that table ready for us as soon as we get there. The tables were situated pretty well, didn't really come across to me as overcrowded or anything. The menu options were great and the server was very friendly and knowledgable about the menu options. He was even able to really describe the cooking process and what goes in to each option. We got our orders in and the wait for the food was pretty reasonable. There were no complaints at the table about the meals and everyone enjoyed themselves. The portions were reasonable and the dishes were quite good and well made. The dessert options are quite fantastic as well, so that's worth a look if you have room afterwards. I would definitely come back here again. It is a little spendier than your average restaurant, but I would say the experience and the food was definitely above the average. So maybe it won't be a frequent haunt for people like your local Chili's or Applebee's, but I'd definitely recommend it if you're looking for a good and reasonable French restaurant in the area. read more

I've been going to Salut for years to score a nice bite of France in busy Edina. The entire restaurant has a French theme spanning from the menus to the artwork and style of the restaurant. Despite eating here for several years, today was the first day I ate outside in their lovely patio. We went for a quick late night bite and were seated immediately. The staff was wonderful. They quickly took our order and were very pleasant in general. I've always adored the small baguettes they offer at the beginning of the meal and today's were especially delicious. After munching on the crunchy yet soft baguettes, I ordered the baked brie and my friend ordered the blueberry tea. The brie came topped with fig jam and some sweet crackers that tasted more like a sugar cookies. Since I'm not one for very sweet snacks, I opted for eating the fig spread and brie on a baguette as opposed to combining the sugary crackers with the sweet fig(too sugary for me) and mellow cheese. This was a great choice because of two reasons, I got to eat more of the delicious brie without it being overpowered by sweetness of the cracker and fig, and my friend got to eat the cookies/crackers with her tea, creating a perfect snack. Overall I would slightly change their pairings but the meal and service was great nonetheless. Can't wait to go again! read more

We have gone to Salut for the past 5 Valentine's days and would normally give it a 5. Great service, and great food & portions but unfortunately that has changed. The service was still great. Our service was very nice and apologetic but it doesn't make up for the food. Our daughters Alfredo was super runny, my poached egg was pretty much hard boiled, my sons calamari size was so small, my husbands duck a l'orange was well done even thought they asked for medium rare and the bread that used to be complementary once you sat down was now $2 ( also smaller size and with 2 random olives). So sad that this place has gone down hill. We won't be back and will be looking to start a new Valentine's Day tradition. read more

For now, this restaurant gets 3 stars based solely on the preparation of my steak. I ordered the special they were offering which was some sort of steak prepared in some sort of wine reduction sauce with lots of garlic on top. From my experiences with steaks in general, I should have kept it simple and just ordered a plain ol steak served with bernaise on the side. The meat was cooked properly, but the sauce lacked salt. It's funny that such a nice restaurant would send up something bland...especially one that is French. Anyways, I will give this place another chance at some point because I liked the environment (better for groups than a date with attractive interior decor and big booths) and the pommes frites were superb. Maybe I'll try the fruit de mer or a plain ol steak next time and they may be able to achieve a 4th star in my book. I took my girlfriend out on a spur of the moment date, and she really likes french food, so I thought Salut would be a good choice. Now, spontaneous dates usually have to wait on a Friday night without reservations, but we lucked out and got two seats at the Oyster Bar, which is served the full menu. Why we got it with a 40 minute wait is beyond me. It was neat to sit there, as we had the seats that let you spy on the chef behind the counter. Really fascinating, watching what people prepare. So, we got our Menu, and decided we had to try the "best Fries in the cities" in addition to her plate of Croque Madame, and my french onion soup burger. The fries came with a side of Hollindaise sauce, which, while probably one of the least healthy condiments, is also one of the most tasty. I recommend trying them. The burger came with a side of french onion soup, and it was tasty, and the croque madame was huge, and brought a nostalgic tear to my girlfriends eye. We opted not to drink to save a little cash, but the bill came to $30. Hey, not that bad! Especially for higher quality foods. There are plates that run expensive, but I cannot comment on them since, you know, I didn't get them. The place is hip, hopping, and loud. If you're feeling like a little classier meal than a common place, give Salut a shot. read more

We came here on a whim Friday night. We were sat right away, since we were ok with sitting at the oyster bar. Our server was very attentive and was probably the highlight of our visit. We ordered a smattering of items off the small plates section of the menu: olives, mussels, the oysters "rockefeller" and the charcuterie plate. The olives were tasty (but nothing special). The charcuterie was ok - the duck was a bit rubbery, and the jar of liver (pate? maybe?) had too much sweet syrup drizzled over it for our taste. We really liked the oysters on the oysters rockefeller but wound up eating around the bread of the sandwich part of the plate because it was heavy and overpowering how delicious the oysters were. We also really liked the mussels - actually we thought these were the best mussels we've had in the Twin Cities (we've tried them almost everywhere we've gone that has them, since we're fans and miss the seafood of our prior home in Boston). The flavor was good, and more importantly this was the first place we've been where the mussels were (a) cleaned properly (no beards on these mussels!) and (b) not sandy. yay? read more

Went to Salut for a late light dinner. I had the Louis Salad, which features grilled salmon, blue crab and shrimp on a bed of greens. The salmon was good, but was a bit charred on the thin end, which I scraped off. The shrimp were a great complement and the crab added another dimension. All in all, quite good--except for the last bite, which unfortunately had some genuine fishiness (in a bad way) to it. My wife ordered Moules Cafe de Paris (mussels). She found these to be reasonably good (although not near her mussels benchmark of Barbette) and the bread served with them was excellent. Service was very good--especially considering the place was hopping. We'll likely try again, since we didn't explore much of the menu this time. read more

We were in line at a restaurant that was over an hour wait. We walked over to Salut and I couldn't have been happier with the choice. We sat patio and the groups of people were great. You can lease up your pup while you eat or just sit with friends. The wait wasn't long and we were greeted and surved right away. Whatever place serves popovers needs to get a 5 start by default! I ordered the Chicken and Artichoke Crepes and they were so delicious with great flavor. The brunch is great and one of the freshest brunches I have had in a while! Came here for some drinks and to try some of their hor's d'ouevres. Everything was good or just ok...I enjoyed the escargot and steak tartare probably the most. Both are rich and savory...oysters weren't bad either, but not hard to mess up. The complimentary french bread was pretty good. Had the Cassoulet and the Blue Crabcake appetizer. Wow, best crabcake I ever had. Fried on the outside and perfectly moist while hearty inside with the crabmeat. An excellent neutral sauce too. The Cassoulet was extremely tender though the white beans were a little hard for my taste. A small portion of flavored sausage was the perfect complement in the Cassoulet; a little tangy and great flavor. Definitely would come back for French food and also just in general to try other dishes.! read more

Although the specials sounded very interesting we opted for entrees off their menu. I had the Salmon omelette (with a creamy goat cheese) which was very good. My wife had the Angelique flatbread pizza which was very good to excellent. We had a foreign visitor with us who wanted to try Maccaroni & Cheese; surprisingly it was good. The decor is very nice and does succeed in creating a French ambience. Our waiter, Jeremiah, was excellent. My main criticism is that the dishes are a little heavy on cheese. Quelle surprise! I visited Salut on a Friday evening, around 6 PM, with two friends. We'd made a reservation earlier in the day on OpenTable. We had a great experience! Our server was attentive, and the food was really good. One dining partner got the crab cakes benedict, which he loved. The other dining partner went big and got boulliabase -- incredible, a stack of seafood in saffron broth. I felt pretty pedestrian getting a burger, but my burger was very tasty indeed, and at my request they included a little dish of béarnaise sauce with the fries, which was awesome for dipping. I also had a glass of the "good" wine, which was lovely. For the whole table we got a side of the mushrooms with garlic sauce. VERY garlicky, and very very good. But if you plan to kiss somebody after (or during) dinner, make sure they have some too. Fair's fair. ;) We took a look at the dessert menu, but all of us were stuffed and happy. Its new-ish. The chefs are still figuring out the menu. First times a charm, second time is decent, third time is a mess. The food on the menu is very inconsistent, not only in terms of offerings, but existing food is constantly being reworked. We absolutely loved the wings when we went the first time. Second time around, when I was craving them again, the chefs had changed the cut of the wing and the seasoning without changing the description. Blech. My wife has ordered the skirt steak twice and both times it has come out severely undercooked. Cooking meat to temp is a basic skill that these chefs clearly lack and moreover the sous chef didn't catch. The ambiance is loud but not bothersome. Yes, I'm a big fan of Salut. First of all, I think the ambiance is fun. They don't take themselves too seriously. Second, I like the food. I'll come back to that. Third, I've always had good, friendly service. So let me comment on the food. I've eaten at Salut for lunch and for dinner. I've always liked what I've been served. Whether it's been light and casual, or a full meal, it's just always good. My most recent experience, earlier this week, I stopped in on my way home. I'd been at a reception. I had some munchies, but not enough for dinner. My wife had a book group at our house. So since Salut is in our neighborhood, I stopped in. I had a martini, a salad, and an appetizer. Martini was excellent. The salad was a 'Salut bleu' - bibb lettuce with a buttermilk blue cheese dressing. It was simple and good. The app was a tenderloin carpaccio - paper-thin slices of very tender beef with a honey mustard vinaigrette, capers, and Parmesan. It was just what I needed. On other visits, I've had a full meal. I've always found the food to be expertly prepared and very tasty. They have great specials. For me, Salut is a reliable, convenient choice. I don't need any excuse for a return visit. read more

My family and I attended the Salut Edina location on Memorial Day to celebrate my brother's graduation from college. We love your restaurant, as it is often our #1 pick for celebrations, casual dinners, and happy hours. We unfortunately had a very unfamiliar experience. Very short staff, which is understandable given the holiday weekend. I expressed my concerns to our waiter as the food we received was disappointing. It took 45+ minutes for us to receive our meal and when we did receive, it was completely cold and had clearly been sitting out for quite some time. I ordered grilled shrimp that was presented cold and rubbery. The hamburger that was ordered by my brother was also cold. Our waiter was kind enough to take the shrimp entrée off our bill as I did not eat it. The following day, I emailed the manager, Kevin with my concerns. I have yet to receive a response - which is extremely poor customer service. I am continually disappointed as nobody has even acknowledged my concerns. We love Salut and are saddened to have had such an experience. We hope this can be corrected before our next experience. Please take note of this and work with your staff on improvements, and please respond to my request of a simple acknowledgement for my concerns. read more

I was actually pretty impressed with this place. They have a very broad selection of menu items which are sure to please the pickest of eaters (aka my grandma). Well done. I had an autumn pasta which was excellent but sort of pricey. Our service was great and the French ambience is also a plus, but be aware that it is very loud in there during busy times... not the kind of place if your looking for an intimate dining experience. I would definately go back, probably at a more off time than the busy dinner rush. read more

It's a French Restaurant run by someone who I doubt has ever eaten a meal in France. It's ideally located in downtown Edina. The burgers are fine, the butter is heavilly salted, so watch out for that. I honestly think this place would be out of business if it didn't get all the overflow from the next door Edina Grill. I was informed by another yelper that the owners went to France and tried to refine the French dining experience and make it more approachable. I can appreciate that. Still, I think the food is soso at best. I am glad their ownership ventured across the pond however. It's French food through the eyes of an Edinan. But as a person who lived in Paris for awhile, there is very little here that's recognizably French, well other than it being on France Ave. If you are looking for something more genuine in the same neck of the woods try Patrick's Bakery on Xerces and 65th. 6.26.12 I went back and it was great. Met a friend at Salut the other evening. The atmosphere is very nice and the waiter was excellent. We had this awesome blueberry tea and I had a beet salad that was excellent. I think the food here is very good and the service is great. I wish it were not quite as expensive for what you get. I don't go here too often because the dinner and drinks really adds up quickly. Salut has been around for quite a while. I had a 100$ gift card from a friend and to be honest, the only reason I chose this place was out of convenience and the fact that I had a gift card. We arrived at the end of Easter brunch. Our server, who was incredibly kind, was about 7 or 8 minutes delayed in arriving to the table for the first time. She apologized genuinely. We were sad that both Items that we had been anticipating were not served during brunch even though we had looked online and it did not say clearly that lunch was not served after brunch on Easter. ( This is why we made a 2pm reservation). However, the kitchen was able to make the baked Brie!!! Unfortunately, the brie came out about 15 minutes later and 25 minutes later. Both were cold in the center and sent back. Finally, we gave up. The Cesar salad was fine. The baguette with butter was probably the best thing we ordered. I later went home and had to Make a baked Brie. My friend and I were destined to have it. I'm not quite sure how it's possible to not be able to serve a warm Brie. However, all in all, food was average. Excellent service and comfortable ambiance. I'd try it again. Just never on a holiday. read more
