My first visit started off horrible. I have never and I mean never been treated so rudely by anyone at a restaurant but the hostess outdid herself. We often go to Saltine for lunch, and have always liked the food and the service. They have an oyster bar and specialize in seafood, but for lunch they also have Po' Boys with ham, roast beef, and other (non-seafood) selections. Their menu changes and they have some interesting specials (last time I was in they had a pot roast blue plate...very interesting!). They also have a full bar, and a good selection of cocktails that I always want to come back and try. This is a relaxed atmosphere with good food and good service. Saltine can get busy at lunch, so if you have a group larger than 3-4 I would call ahead. I would also imagine that happy hour is quite busy...but check it out! read more

Originally one of our favorite spots in town. Good news is cocktails and oysters are still stellar. So come for happy hour. Last 2 visits (one Saturday and one Sunday) they have run out of SEVERAL menu items. The substitute items were poorly prepared. In particular they took 3 shots at cooking a pork chop that went from uncooked to very very rare. Then I gave up. Not sure what's going on but the menu isn't deep enough to tolerate running out of several items. read more

The best oysters I have ever had in my life, and will ever have, did not come from here. The second best oysters, however, came from Saltine. Here is the moral of this review: If you like oysters, check this place out. If you are curious about oysters, this is a great place to get your feet (or tongue) wet. If you detest oysters, I recommend you not go to an oyster restaurant, though they do have other things on the menu. The main thing to discuss is, of course, the oysters. They are very good. They always have a small selection of them and post the prices on a blackboard by the door. The guys behind the counter are not only professional oyster shuckers but they have well developed oyster palates. If you are curious about the differences in the oysters (relevant when you are ordering a dozen and the price can vary several dollars between them!) these guys will steer you in the right direction. You can get a couple of sauces with the oysters if you're into that, from your standard cocktail sauces and hot sauces to fresh horseradish and a house made malt vinegar. The rest of the menu is a small, but tasty. Nothing really stands out too much though. If it were that menu alone, this place would get a perfectly fine three star rating. Saltine has one of the best selections of beer I have seen in Jackson. If you are hanging out there in the afternoon, at some point you will see them pulling together some sort of punch for happy hour. They just make a big bowl of whatever they feel like and serve it until it runs out. It is a great concept, but introduces a little uncertainty risk into your afternoon. $3 gets you a Miller High Life and an oyster - basically, never order a High Life without picking up that free oyster. The atmosphere is nice, and there is outdoor seating that is well shaded as the sun goes down - the sun might be a little too direct for a summer lunchtime though. MUST HAVE DISHES IN JACKSON - The Gulf Oysters make this list. There were some hiccups when they first opened, but if you go during oyster season (months ending in an R, or, more liberally, containing an R) you're basically guaranteed fresh, delicious, as local as possible oysters. Settle yourself in during the oyster happy hour and keep them coming. Their house made vinegar is a really nice touch. read more

I've never been let down by anything on the menu here! I also love all the events at Saltine. We attended May the Fourth Be With You where they had special Star Wars themed drinks and meals. They even had the 501st there which for those who don't know is a professional Star Wars cosplay group with incredibly well made costumes! I love saltine and find myself eating here almost weekly. For appetizers I would recommend the rye pretzel or skillet cornbread. There's just something great about cornbread coming from a skillet. I've tried many of the menu items but the two things I can't get over are the kale salad and the avocado toast. They are to die for! The kale salad has a delicious dressing with pickled onions and olives, and the avocado toast has crab, avocado, and green with a squeeze of lemon. I so enjoy the variety of oysters they have raw and fried. And of course dessert. The best, in my opinion, is the banoffee- banana + coffee. Yes, it's as good as it sounds. Or of chocolate is more your thing, the s'mores cake. So huge. So rich. They have a nice beer section and offer half pints. One special drink they have is a daily punch. Always a good choice! Saltine is a really cool restaurant in the Fondren area of Jackson, located inside a re-purposed old school building. It shares the building with shops and Duling Hall, a terrific music venue. I've eaten at Saltine several times, but always alone. The oysters are great. I've ordered just about every kind of seasonal raw oyster that they offer, as well as the ever-present gulf oysters and the various grilled oysters. I'd say that they are all fantastic, if a tad overpriced, as compared to other oyster-centric restaurants....of course, getting Canadian or West Coast oysters to Jackson, MS cannot be cheap. One of my favorite menu items is the Nashville-inspired "hot oysters" sandwich. I've never had anything not oyster-centric at Saltine, so I can't speak to the entire menu. Oysters came out without cocktail or horseradish sauce and no oyster forks - poor presentation. Crab dip appetizer came out with crushed up crumb like chips. 2 Entrees never came out. Appetizer order was messed up. Refills never offered. Ordered kids entrees 45 minutes before adult entrees. Kids entrees came out AFTER adult entrees. Brought bill that was not itemized. Tip included and I had to ask. I am not an oyster fan. At all. So it's weird that I find myself eating here often, right? But the menu is varied and creative on all fronts. The seafood sausage is wonderful as is the gumbo. I would be remiss to not mention the burger as it is a go-to for me. Brunch is fantastic too. Plus they do a ramen night then is a good time as well as good grub.
