After giving Saltine a second try, I must say there was a dramatic improvement in the service! I stopped in for lunch at about 12:15, and ordered a half dozen oysters which arrived immediately. A few of them were small, which happens. They were sweet, salty and delicious! My waitress was very attentive! I ordered the shrimp and grits, which were very tasty. While it was a bit different with the kale, I enjoyed it thoroughly. The grits were just spicy enough to notice. I still think it's a bit overpriced for what you get. I love saltine and find myself eating here almost weekly. For appetizers I would recommend the rye pretzel or skillet cornbread. There's just something great about cornbread coming from a skillet. I've tried many of the menu items but the two things I can't get over are the kale salad and the avocado toast. They are to die for! The kale salad has a delicious dressing with pickled onions and olives, and the avocado toast has crab, avocado, and green with a squeeze of lemon. I so enjoy the variety of oysters they have raw and fried. And of course dessert. The best, in my opinion, is the banoffee- banana + coffee. Yes, it's as good as it sounds. Or of chocolate is more your thing, the s'mores cake. So huge. So rich. They have a nice beer section and offer half pints. One special drink they have is a daily punch. Always a good choice! Second time I have tried to eat at Saltine. Food is decent, service is marginal, the amount of time it takes to eat is painful. Both sits were in the 2.5 hour range, a Wednesday and a Friday. I travel for work, this would be a good spot for a nice sit down dinner while away but it's a beating. Time is money, and 2-3 hours for a simple dinner doesn't work. They might need to look at slowing customers down so the kitchen can keep up. Probably my last visit, to many other choices in Jackson. read more

Overrated. Long wait for average food. The seafood never has tasted fresh to me and I'm always disappointed to be completely honest.

I love the atmosphere and prefer the high top tables in the bar area. The oysters are always a must-- I prefer the cooked lemon ones. Currently they are offering a lobster dip-- it's like a queso with lobster and other goodies. ITS DELECTABLE. I love their mimosas that are made with fresh in house squeezed OJ. If you are looking for a low-key, welcoming setting with very good food--and excellent service and drinks--Saltine is a terrific choice! My dining partner and I dropped by without reservations on a Sunday evening, hoping for the best. We were immediately seated. Our server capably balanced our needs with those of other parties, one of which was quite large. My drink, A Little Dinghy, was a lovely twist on the standard sweetish bourbon-citrus mix. Just the right potency, too! Since I was driving, I sadly had to stick with a single tipple. The shrimp and grits entree was very good, though slightly oilier than preferred (hence the four stars). My partner's Cajun seared salmon was succulent. We shared a serving of banoffee pie for dessert. That delicious combo of dulce de leche, bananas, and Graham crackers helped me overlook that it was served in a plastic take-away tub. $300 wasted. We came here as our first restaurant experience when visiting Mississippi and had the worst experience. First, I ordered two of the three types of oysters, not the inland ones. When they came out, they had the inland ones, which I was avoiding due to warm temps of summer. Next, numerous dishes we chose were "out" of. When we finally picked 6 dishes to try, they came out and told us they were out of crawfish for one and had to "go get some" but that we would be comped for the wait. Next came my salmon dish, except it wasn't salmon, it was some very smelly white fish that i refused and sent back. I asked what fish it was and never received an answer. They also never refilled the water at the table or the alcoholic beverages. After a while, it felt like they were avoiding us, even though we were very polite. We still tipped 20% as we always do, but that HUGE bill for such terrible experience was hard to swallow. On a positive note, the desserts were good and so was the pork belly. I just uploaded a pic of the bill and remembered that they actually charged a fee for using a card too. If we knew that, we would have paid cash. Just terribly disappointing and expensive. read more

Saltine is a really cool restaurant in the Fondren area of Jackson, located inside a re-purposed old school building. It shares the building with shops and Duling Hall, a terrific music venue. I've eaten at Saltine several times, but always alone. The oysters are great. I've ordered just about every kind of seasonal raw oyster that they offer, as well as the ever-present gulf oysters and the various grilled oysters. I'd say that they are all fantastic, if a tad overpriced, as compared to other oyster-centric restaurants....of course, getting Canadian or West Coast oysters to Jackson, MS cannot be cheap. One of my favorite menu items is the Nashville-inspired "hot oysters" sandwich. I've never had anything not oyster-centric at Saltine, so I can't speak to the entire menu. They were busy when we got in, took a while to be served. We almost missed happy hour. But the staff more than made up for it. Came for lunch over the weekend. It's located in a former school, so takes you back to the day. The decor was well done and inviting. Staff was nice and pleasant. I wish I loved it as much as all the other reviews. Without a doubt the staff behind the bar was great. I came through on a Sunday afternoon and the place was packed. Maybe I just didn't try the right things? I started with a Nashville chicken biscuit sandwich(slider) The bread was dry. The chicken was tiny and not much sauce. I was there around brunch time but wasn't too excited with anything I saw people around me get. I ended up doing a catfish po boy. This bread was better but not much seasoning on the fish. Onions tomatoes pickles. The fries were flimsy weak and greasy. The layout of the restaurant was very welcoming the staff at the hostess stand was great. Had been wanting oysters something terribly for a few weeks and we decided to try Saltines after hearing great things. Much to our chagrin, this happened: Upon arriving at 1430 on a Saturday, we stood at the host stand waiting to be seated. Glancing into the restaurant, we noticed a well seated but not overly busy restaurant. The table nearest the host stand was clearing out and there were several other empty areas that we could be seated at. 10 minutes went by and we were yet to be greeted and seated. I had to take it upon myself to call upon the busboy who was clearing the local table and ask that he inform someone of our presence. After he went for help, we were promptly greeted and taken to sit at a nearby table. Normal service followed briefly, our waitress came to our table, we informed her of it being our first time and in a rushed but monotone voice she blurted out the most expensive items on the menu when we asked what the favorites were. We ordered spring crab/lobster rolls, the yellowfin tuna salad and I put in for my dozen oysters. She promptly brought us back our water and soda and disappeared, never to be seen again until it was time to get our check. During the course of our meal, I had to flag down another waiter to ask for a refill on my SO's beverage and other waiters brought our food out. Once it was time for our check, I had to flag down yet another waiter to find ours in order to get our check. I voiced my displeasure to her about the poor service which was evidently passed on. Once she finally brought our check, another ten minutes later, she made the comment that she'd been dealing with a more densely populated table and did not apologize for offering us zero service during our visit. All in all, the oysters were magnificent, the tuna and spring rolls tasty and the service was absolutely miserable. I saw others receiving great service during our meal so Id like to think this was a one off situation. read more

Best oysters in the area! We frequent Saltines on the weekends, hardly ever have to wait for seats. I always order raw oysters and enjoy the many selections, including oysters from the east and west coast as well as your typical gulf coast oysters. For my main entrée, I typically get the shrimp boil, which is always cooked and seasoned to perfection. My husband has tried a variety of entrées and his favorite is the PB&J. Don't let the name fool you, this is not a sandwich but instead pork belly and pepper jelly--absolutely delicious if you're looking for something different from seafood. For dessert, we have a hard time deciding because they are so good! Our personal favorites are the key lime pie and banana pudding cup(the name is slipping my mind). I had the Soft-shell Crab Benedict, and was disappointed as the crab was very fishy tasting, and the shell was like waxed paper -- not really edible. The biscuit and hollandaise sauce were very good. Had a wonderful Sunday brunch with my husband, my mom and her boyfriend (they were visiting from out of town)! The food, as always, was delicious and the waitstaff were an absolute joy.
