Meeting my cousin and family for dinner (unplanned) 3. Salt + Smoke The area we sat in was empty but it was understandable based on a winter storm. I ordered the grilled cheese with a side of creamed corn. And had the Pimento Cheese Toasted Ravs, chicken skins and beef fat fries. Yes to all. lol. The toasted ravs were really good. It had a nice crisp and every bite was packed with tasty pimento cheese. The chicken skins were different than I'm used to as it has BBq spices and wow, it took it to another level. The grilled cheese was grilled to perfection with the perfect amount of crispness and butter. You can add meat to it and I'm sure it would have been great. The BBq plate my son ate was devoured. He said he wouldn't be able to finish it, but did. The service was so-so. As the server was refilling water for everyone, she skipped me. Then when I asked for a refill- she came back and gave it to the wrong person. Also, kind of shouldered my niece as she was pouring water for my cousin. Overall, food was really good. I dined here on a Sunday evening with two other people. We started with the Pimiento Cheese Toasted Ravs. They weren't so hot and I didn't like whatever the sauce was with them. My friends ordered the two meat plate and the salmon. I have really been trying to eat well and ordered the Caesar Salad add Brisket. The waitress informed me that they aren't allowing you to order brisket that way. You can order it on a sandwich or a plate. It's 6pm on a Sunday and you have 3 tables sat and you're not going to allow someone to order something exactly as it's listed on the menu? I can't imagine anyone with any authority or sense made this decision. Ok, I'll have the Chicken Caesar Wrap with Buffalo Chicken and potato side. The wrap was tiny and filled with mostly lettuce that wasn't dressed enough. There couldn't have been 2oz of chicken, it was dry, and there was no buffalo sauce. Salt and Smoke is one of my favorite groups of restaurants in all of St. Louis. This location still has some growing pains to work out. It's great for large families and groups, with lots of indoor and outdoor seating. The bar at this location is also huge and always has plenty of games on for sports fans. The kitchen at the Ellisville location has it on lock, the food there is always perfect. My favorite appetizers include the Smoked Chicken Wings, Deviled Eggs, and Loaded Fries to start. For main dishes, we mostly get the Beastie Combo or Plates so we can have two sides. I recommend the ribs, lean brisket, pulled pork, and pulled chicken. The White Cheddar Mac and Cheese is by far the best thing on the whole menu -- more of a pasta masterpiece than a side dish. The food stays great for a few days, making mouthwatering leftovers that no one complains about! Unfortunately, the wait staff at this location need more training. Tables often sit uncleared, and drinks rarely get refilled. The servers also seem to struggle with the handheld ordering systems, which slow everything down. Overall, the food is as delicious as ever and remains the main reason I keep coming back. I just hope the service side catches up to the quality coming out of the kitchen. read more

We had a great experience here on Valentine's Day. We went in a little later (8PM), and there was no wait. We had the Schmidtzburg, an off-menu item that was sooo good. The service here was absolutely outstanding, from the hostess to the server to basically anyone we interacted with. We enjoyed the vibe as well. Plenty of parking, and a nice, big restaurant that still has some charm. The food was yummy as well. I didn't love all the sauces, but I did like 2 of them, so that was enough. We had a really great dinner. The mac and cheese is my favorite EVER, and I would go back literally just for that. read more

Sweet on the ribs because that sticky, sugary goodness is what makes these ribs even better. The brisket was a bit dry, but had a great bark and was still better than most. As for the sides... wow. The fries? Get in my belly. The Mac and cheese?! Shouldn't even be legal. More addicting than whatever drug you find to be addicting. Don't even get me going on the little roll thing! Great place to take a large group! BBQ speak to almost everyone so all are happy enough on the food front. Eat on the patio. They had just the right balance to make it a great addition to my meal. I was not crazy about my beans but that was a taste thing. These have no sweet to them and I prefer a bit of brown sugar in my beans. For dessert I got the brown butter pecan bar and this was decadent. Delicious but very sweet. Big enough to share. I enjoyed that they gave me little containers of caramel and whipped cream (I didn't ask) so that if I had wanted I could have saved my dessert for later. My husband had been to another location a while ago (years) and didn't enjoy his meal. I wanted to try it so we came to this location since it's closer to where we live. We went on a Saturday night during the dinner hour and it wasn't very crowded. There's a fair amount of seating outside, but it was a little cool out so we opted to sit inside. We were greeted and seated right away. Our server came and took our drink orders. She was very friendly and answered a few questions we had about menu items. I ordered a drink from their non alcohol menu, but It has them put tequila in it for an up charge. I ordered a brisket sandwich and a side of mac-n-cheese. I really liked both of them. My husband ordered a plate, which is a meat and two sides. He got the ribs, beans, and mac-n-cheese. It also came with a popover. He said the ribs were okay. They're known for their mac and cheese, and while it was good, it wasn't memorable enough to bring me back. The bacon cheddar popover that is included with the combo was dry and tasteless. Portions were on the smaller side, though it was nice to try a variety of items. A couple of service issues stood out. I paid with a $25 gift card (the combo was $21.99) and asked for a receipt to check the remaining balance and personal records, but was told the tax covered the remaining balance, but I couldn't verify the final breakdown or tip. I'm not sure if the waitress took the remaining balance as tip or if it was all tax, as she offered to discard the card for me. I was not sure whether I had the option to tip by card or not, or what the final breakdown was. I did not realize in the moment, but now feel this service soured the entire experience. Enjoyed my meal at Salt + Smoke. I appreciate the availability of a gluten free bun. The burger was filling and flavorful. The potato salad was nothing spectacular but still did the job. We also tried the deviled eggs that we loved! This was the perfect place for a large group to sit together. The menu had a variety offerings and even pleased small kids which is always a feat! We were in a big group and had several small children with us that were walking around the table, climbing on the empty booth next to us, and dancing. There were a couple servers who were standing nearby throughout most of our meal and rolling their eyes and were visibly annoyed with the children. She stood behind me every time, and I had to turn my head every time vs. her changing her position to be more attentive to everyone at the table. It's not a big deal, just something I observed. The food, I ordered a half salad (which looked like full) with smoked salmon. It was really good. My son ordered a cheeseburger and fries. He said it was good and he would order it again. Their fries were so good. Really good fries! My other son ordered a 2 meat combo, wings, and ribs. He wasn't impressed. He wanted the ribs to fall off the bone. They were a bit tough. He didn't care for the wings either. I tried the wings, and I agree, not the best. He tried his brother's burger and said he'll order that if we returned. My husband ordered a 2 meat plate as well. Holy cow, get the pimento cheese ravioli!!! Just do it, you will love me for it. So good & so garlicky, which was a welcome surprise. I stopped in on a whim and got these to go along with a half kale crunch salad with smoked salmon. The salad was absolutely fantastic and the half size is a very generous serving, I can't even imagine how big the large is! The salmon was cooked perfectly and was absolutely delicious. Shouting from the rooftops how excited I am that a salt and smoke opened up by me! I know it's a BBQ joint, and the BBQ is superb BUT the cheese burger is something I absolutely crave the most! It's incredibly delicious. You also get a side with it and because I have had the burger too many times to count I've tried all the sides. Best sides in my opinion are baked beans, creamed corn, and the potato salad. The Mac and Cheese, is always the favored by the wait staff and it is delectable as well! The outdoor patio area is something to be desired! We have sat here a few times and can't wait for the perfect warm weather to lounge out there. Waiters and bartenders we have had have been spectacular. Ryan has been our waiter and he was knowledgeable and kind. The bartender Josh was so nice. His knowledge of craft beverages is off the charts! (Try the new Berry Margarita that they hand crafted, you won't regret it) and then Shawn the manager is so awesome too! The food was good, but this place needs to "check yo-self" when it comes to pricing. Draft beer here is $9 and the chocolate cake is $15...both of those prices are the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Even fine dining establishments like Capital Grille in Clayton don't even charge these kinds of prices. I also thought the pricing on the meal was a bit high considering the small amount of meat you get. I got the 2 meat combo with chicken and brisket, comes with 2 sides and a popover. Overall, there is a decent amount of food on the plate for $22, but there isn't enough meat to justify that price. Sides and bread are cheap. There were only 2 strips of brisket and a small pile of shredded chicken on the plate. As far as flavor goes, the brisket had a good smoke flavor. I chose the lean cut - it wasn't overly moist, but it wasn't dry either. Even though it wasn't the best brisket I've ever had, I'd get it again. The chicken was moist, but kinda plain. I couldn't really taste any smoke flavor. For the sides, I ordered the pit beans & cracker Mac. The cracker Mac was really good - creamy, rich, and salty (in a good way) from the crackers. The beans were slightly sweet with a little meat in them. They had good flavor, but I prefer my beans to be thicker and less runny. The popover was kinda plain - just tasted like airy bread. Could've used some more salt or other flavor profile. The sweet BBQ sauce was just OK - also on the runny side. The food came out extremely fast - we got the food before the beer. We arrived and were told there was a 15 minute wait for 4 people. There were plenty of tables open in the back dining room, but we were told they were saving them for large parties. We were ultimately seated at one of those tables and we never saw anyone seated at the other open tables in the room The air conditioning was not working properly. The manager said they are working the problem and offered a fan for the table which we declined. We have been here several times and not had this problem. It was 85 degrees outside and the restaurant had floor fans out.... I'm sure it would have been much hotter mid-day. The servers were sweating as they were working hard in a hot environment. The food was great as always and the temperature moderated as the sun went down. Crispy hand cut fries topped with all the yummy fixings - cheese sauce, bacon, scallions and Alabama white sauce. The burnt ends, ribs, pulled pork, and chicken were flavorful, moist, and had excellent smoke taste. Seasoned well too. The pulled chicken was especially juicy. Variety of delicious sides, you can't go wrong but I would recommend the white cheddar man and cheese. Ooey Goey white cheddar cheese sauce with a buttery crunchy cracker topping and the noodles were cooked perfectly. The cheddar popover was a fun addition. The sauces were average.
