First time visit and highly recommended by daughter's coworker. Open for dine in so we called to make reservations for 3 people around 5:30 for immediate seating. No reservations available till after 9pm but offered to come in for walk-in. The menu choices were plentiful including several special of the days entrees. Emilee welcomed us and immediately & provided us w water and an extra bottle for refills. Soda are by cans so no refills We started w several appetisers to share including kale & romaine ceasar salad, clam chowder, white wine steamed clams, grilled bread w anchovie butter, mac&cheese and dozen oysters (x6 Kumamoto oysters from Humbolt and x6 Fanny Bay oyster from WA) ...that was just the beginning! ALL was excellent and delicious but my favorite was the grilled bread w anchovie butter! We planned to order additional individual main entrees but was so full we ended up w just one to share! We decided w the special of day 14oz steak just to try; it was cooked medium to juiciness perfection. There were so many other entrees that looked good seeing what other customers were trying especially the cheese burger, fish and chips and shrimp mole. A perfect excuse to definitely come back! Where do I begin? This is gonna be a loooong one I feel bad writing this review but the experience just kept getting weirder and weirder This place deserves 5 starts for the food. I had the fennel salad 1/2 dozen fresh raw oysters and charred octopus. All AMAZING Ambiance was trendy. Reminded me of the restaurants in San Diego Now the service. Damn From the moment I walked in. There was a party of two that were being greeted and seated. She never came back. The curly hair guy I'm assuming is the owner asked me after I stood there for 10 minutes if I had already spoken to the hostess. I said no. He let her know I was there waiting to be seated and she proceeded to look like she was doing something else for a couple of minute as I watched her. With the look of hesitation on her face she finally approached me. Didn't say hello. I said one for dinner and she offered the bar which I could have sat in 15 minutes earlier if that's where I wanted to eat my dinner. I said I preferred a table and she pointed to a table that had no settings. Mind you. This is a trendy restaurant. Not Apple bees. She told me to take a chair. She didn't guide me to my seat. Didn't set the table before I sat. Again. Trendy restaurant. I sat down. Waited another 5 minutes at this point only friends of staff were sitting at the bar and I was the only one sitting at a table at the bar. So I waited. Finally my server approached me. Is she like courtesies and puts my plate down from a distance like I'm gonna bite her or something lol this is just too much as she did that with every single dish that she ran to me. So after my salad came my octopus and still no oysters. Again, this is a trendy restaurant. It is common knowledge in the restaurant industry that you paste a guest meal, especially when they order three different dishes. The serving may could've asked in what order would you like these dishes but I got my oysters at the end after I had already finished my octopus and half of my salad Was very tempted to cancel but at the bar area to be having a social hour instead of taking care of their guests And I'm glad I did not cancel the oysters because they were amazing So after sitting there enjoying my meal on my own, not one was, I asked if I would like another glass of wine because my glass was almost empty. I mean, even at Applebee's, try and upsell you more liquor, you know, but it was kind of like there wasn't much attention to my table. So after paying attention to what was going on around me, there was a lot of conversation among friends maybe some liquor drinking as employees. I just sat there and kept waiting for some foremost for my oysters and then I had to wait for my bill and I asked for it, and it was quietly given to me placed on my table Without a thank you did you enjoy your meal? I never leave reviews but this experience was so bad it deserves a review. We had the worse pizza that we've ever had. We are fans of wood oven pizza and usually enjoy the taste but they burnt our pizza very bad while simultaneously having the soggiest top crust possible. we attempted to eat it but couldn't. The waiter never ask us how our food was but I mentioned when she offered to bring the check that the kitchen should be aware that the pizza was awful, not edible. I don't think we should have paid a dime for that disgusting pizza, but instead the kitchen took off the cheapest thing on our bill, the focaccia bread. They also made an excuse about making pizza being new to them, well if you haven't mastered it don't put it on your menu. The rest of our food was decent at best. First time in Arcata and we tried Salt Fish House for dinner on a Friday night. We did not have a reservation but called about an hour before we arrived and they were happy to get us in. The decor and ambiance is very island vibe. We had the King Crab Leg which was 1 larger leg. It was fresh and sweet. Also had the clam chowder which is served with toasted bread. Broth was the perfect thickness and flavor was great with lots of chunks of clams, potatoes and carrots. We also tried the grilled octopus which was the only disappointment. THE BEST CLAM CHOWDER!!!! Wow, I was blown away by how good the clam chowder was. The perfect balance between creaminess and broth. The contents inside the clam chowder are perfectly cut in size and very flavorful. We were tempted to order two quarts of it because it was just that good! The fish and chips on the other hand.. It was pretty mediocre. It wasn't bad, but the breading was not crispy at all and the fries were very soggy as well. Maybe it could be because of the to-go container it was in? The good: Cocktails are fabulous, and the dungeoness crab fettuccine was full of great spicy flavor and big bites of crab. The bad: The oysters are really inconsistent in size. We ordered two of each kind they had available and the same type oyster would have one the size of your thumbnail and the other as big as the shell. It seemed silly to pay the same price for the small one as the large. The Caesar salad. Usually Caesars at seafood places are fantastic because they don't shy away from using anchovies in the dressing. This dressing was really bland- honestly it just tasted like mayo on lettuce. No lemon or salt or anchovy flavor at all. I added the prawns which were tasty but looking at the price tag of $21 for that salad was tough to justify. We would come back to try other dishes- maybe we just shouldn't have ordered the Caesar salad and gone with fish and chips or fish tacos. read more

Finally got a chance to catch a seafood spot on our way up to Redwood National Park, and let me tell you, it wasn't an easy task finding places to eat or that stayed open late enough. But. Anyways, here's what we had. Cioppino - I was super excited about this dish because 1. From what I understand, this Italian-American dish originated in San Francisco, CA and pretty it's pretty well known. And 2. I got to eat this on the Pacific coast, super fresh so. I enjoyed. Worth the order if you can get it at a legit spot. Fish, Clams and Prawns in a Tomato base sauce. Served with a side of grilled Sourdough. Bomb!! Grilled Pacific Oysters - My favorite dish of the night. Fresh, warm, topped with a Chimichurri, these hit the spot for sure. Must order for me if you make it here. Market Ceviche Tostadas - Not hating, but surprisingly, these were super good given this wasn't a traditional mariscos or anything but damn, super good, super fresh, definite recommend. For sure. Charred Octopus - Always one of my favorite orders, and this one didn't disappoint at all. Served over a bed of Green Papaya Salad with a Thai Chili Jam, Lime, Tamarind, Herbs and Peanuts. Fire yo!! Give it a go. We also got the Brownie dessert with Vanilla Bean Whipped Cream and Carmel Drizzle. Yoooo!! And lastly, they offer up a super huge variety of Vegan options by substituting a lot on the menu to accommodate. I'd definitely recommend checking this place out if you get a chance. Tuesday evening, 8.18.20. We were touring around Arcata and drove by - loved the outdoor space and how they're handling distancing. It was around 5pm and there were definitely people on the waiting list. They close really late, so we made an 8:00 reservation and went on our touristy way to see some more coast. It was a lovely experience. They knew we had our dog, and it was no problem. We ordered the SALT Margaritas and they were good and strong. Lively music is piped into the courtyard. Started with the charred octopus. It was cooked exactly perfectly. I'm partial to the spanish restaurant preparation of octopus, but this was cooked so perfectly that I didn't miss the accompaniment of potatoes, romesco, etc. at all. I followed with the dungeness crab spaghetti. I'd been eating other seafood all week, so while this is not what I'd normally order, it was a good option for me on this night. Had Salt Fish House for dinner while out of town for a business trip. The decor was quite smart with rusty iron interspersed with natural wood. Tables are well spaced and though it was chilly we opted to sit outside under the gas heaters. I was looking for a fish and chip, but unfortunately or fortunately they were trying a new menu that night. Settled on the steelhead and was not disappointed at all - so well prepared I savored every bite! Coworkers went for the spaghetti with jumbo shrimp and halibut over mushrooms (if I recall). Both looked happy and I was a little jealous as the halibut looked like the dish of the night! I'm not a big spag guy, but I would've crushed those shrimp! Some things on the menu I wanted to try include the calamari and the octopus appetizer. Unfortunately work per diem is a paltry sum for dinner . The food came out quickly and all at once. My wife loved her ciopino and my son loved the poke bowl. They were out of two main menu items, I was going to order the steak, but didn't want to pay $52 for a New York strip, so I opted for the poke bowl too. We also got some grilled oysters. Found this place during a recent trip up the coast to Northern California. Definitely suggest making a reservation in advance. We tried doing a walk-in and they were fully booked for the night and so we made a reservation for the next day. It has a modern and uppity vibe, and one of the more pricey meals we had on the trip. Super disappointed when we last went a week or so ago. They changed chefs and the food is lacking. They are no longer a fish house but now serve "Costal Cuisine". They no longer have their chowder, which was the most delicious chowder I've ever had. They no longer have the ceviche, also devastating, and the red meet option left MUCH to be desired. It's not often that I'm completely surprised by a restaurant that I'm trying for the first time. This place definitely did with its very hip/urban vibe and high end menu options. Not something I would be expecting in Arcata of all places (no offense). Their menu features some very creative options that showcase their fresh ingredients. I've been here twice now and here are some of my favorites: the oysters (raw or grilled), steelhead dip with chips, charred Brussel sprouts, clam chowder and seared steelhead. Everyone that's been here with me has raved about this place and their respective meals as well. The service here has been great both times, especially on the first visit with a larger party. They're always super friendly and willing to offer their recommendations. I would honestly give this place more than 5 stars if I could. Warm cocktails (we were by the bar and one of the bar tenders was showing everyone photos of when she was 15 on her phone the entire time we were there), nothing special calamari(good texture, barely any flavor), $45 pork chop?? Again nothing special, very old school with applesauce and raw walnuts on top, mashed potatoes it came with had salt, so that was a (very bare minimum) plus. Clam pasta had 4 clams on it, absolutely zero seasoning, and broken oily sauce, I had to dump a ton of salt/pepper on it to make it edible and hold the bowl at and angle so the oil went to the other side. "Charred/blistered" shisitos were in a bowl of brown water and raw. Dessert - whipped cream had zero sugar, graham cracker crust again dated and reminded me of preschool. Actual chocolate part was good if you scraped it off on its own. The good-- oysters were very fresh/clean and delicious, just don't use the lemon/sauce that comes with it, it is VERY sour. 1star for oysters. Overall very disappointed. Was really looking forward to this menu and reservation we made ages ago for our "splurge" meal on vacation. We had a various of cocktails, which were all really good but my faves would be The Green Flash and The Sunset Punch! As far as food, we got fish sando with fries extra crispy (so very good), stone fruit and feta salad (could have used more feta and stone fruit but fresh and yummy nonetheless), oysters (2 of each - local, Washington, and British Columbia), and clam chowder (so warming for the soul)! We had our anniversary dinner here and it knocked our socks off! My husband says his meal was the highlight of our trip. He shared much of his cioppino with me and it was absolutely outstanding.
