They have the guts to push the envelope on seemingly weird combos. They do have some more traditional type flavors as well. I love how they have some flavors as part of a fixed menu offering and others that rotate on a rolling basis. I love Salt & Straw's waffle cones and bowls and always make a point to get one when I visit. One drawback about this location is that it's extremely busy, at least it was when we went, which was the middle of the week and fairly close to closing. There was nowhere to sit, either inside or outside of the store, so we were reduced to eating our ice cream in my car. Not a huge deal, but not ideal. Just checked out one of Salt & Straw's newest valley locations! Located in Tempe Novus Plaza, which is right on ASU Campus, overall great spot, but you do have to pay for parking unless you are able to snag one of the free street/temporary options. I went with my family and though there was a long line, it moved quickly! We loved that they encouraged sampling and even more so that they use real mini spoons and have a little spoon drop ( love a sustainable feature). Salt & Straw doesn't dish out traditional flavors and has a more unique line up, they definitely imitate a classic, but with their own twist! Some of them being more off the wall than others. I opted for th Salted, Malted Cookie Dough and Olive Oil Vanilla, which paired nicely together! I tried the coffee nuts, lavender, as ell as a few of their seasonal ones. It's a very fun spot and greta for a unique sweet treat. You can also get pints to go, as well as pup cups! I am a long time fan of the Salt and Straw locations in Portland, Oregon. The service there is usually decent. And compared to the service at the Gilbert location here in AZ, this newest location is lacking in customer service. The workers look visibly stressed when me and only one other person came in the middle of the day--as if it was going to be a hassle. The girl who did end up taking our order however carried the team. She had glasses and braids and was incredibly personable and friendly. It is a little strange that the workers wear their hair in loose ponytails and that's it. You would expect a braid, a bun, or at least a hat--as a manager in a food kitchen it's slightly concerning to see. I will continue to come back because I do love this company, but I hope some changes are made regarding customer service and the lack of a welcoming environment. read more
