I love getting ice cream from this place. The staff there are very nice and patient when giving us tastings of the flavors we asked for. Their unique flavors pair so well. My favorites are Pear & Blue Cheese, Arbequina Olive Oil, Coffee and Love Nuts, and Honey Lavender. But I always end up getting the Pear & Blue Cheese and Arbequina Olive Oil. As the rest of Pasadena takes a bizarre L from closing really early, Salt & Straw (as many of the other locations do in other ways) takes the W for being open later on a Friday night. Their ice cream is delicious, there's a diverse range of unique flavors including a seasonal rotation, you can sample as many flavors as you'd like before making your decision, and the customer service is friendly and impeccable, so there's no surprise that the line goes all the way outside sometimes. If you want to skip the line, however, you can always just go straight for their pints (they have ice cream cakes and dog ice cream as well). However, along the way in the line there's some stuff to look at, such as neat facts about the franchise's founding and the merch that they have to offer, including samples of their edible culinary perfume (smells and tastes good!). We got a tasting flight which comes with 4 sizeable kids' scoops and comes with the waffle cone chips as well and at a more recent visit, we got to try scoops of their spooky Halloween flavors, complete with bugs in it too! I have had a great experience at every location of Salt & Straw I have visited. The organization obviously creates a priority on service. Each and every employee has been friendly and enthusiastic about their service. Other ice creams chains (that shall not be named) are sometimes rude and almost annoyed by questions and/or refuse to provide suggestions. Salt & Straw staff are always generous with samples and descriptions of flavors. I enjoy hearing about their favorite flavors. I was lucky to try the Green Fennel and Maple before it left the menu. Lightly sweetened, the most unique flavor I have ever had. Of course I had it in a waffle cone. An extra treat for when the ice cream is gone but the flavor has soaked in. On occasion we purchase our favorite flavors ice creams by the pint. I'm always surprised by the new flavor combinations that they come up with. 5 star service and product for sure! read more

We were in Old Town Pasadena having a girls afternoon with my sister and niece when we walked by Salt & Straw. My friend has brought me some of their ice cream from the Disney location, so I was familiar with them and suggested we pop in for a cone. They have some fun and unique flavors, so I was interested in a few different ones. Luckily, the weren't busy and they didn't mind giving us samples. We each tried a couple different flavors then made our order. They were very friendly and we didn't feel rushed, which was nice. There were several fun flavors, but I was able to narrow it down to the Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper. I also liked that they had waffle cones that were in a cup, so it was the best of both worlds. We all picked our own flavors and walked around Old Town enjoying our ice cream. But finding a chain store that consistently maintains quality and creativity like a small artisanal shop is very rare. Salt & Straw is one of them and their unique combinations are always fun to try and peruse. And admittedly, the unique ones are always my favorite ones. The best of the best to me is the pear & bleu cheese. It may sound strange but this classic culinary combination works just as well as a sweet ice cream as it does on an appetizer plate. The pears are fresh and naturally sweet and the bleu cheese just makes it taste like a cheesecake ice cream. They probably make the best honey lavender ice cream I've ever had - I think very few ice cream places that have this flavor are able to really bring out the distinct taste of lavender. The taste in their flavors really stand out, and the soft creamy textures really speaks for the quality of their ingredients. Any flavors that contain chunks add a lot of texture. The caramel in the Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons is probably one of the best tasting caramel I've had. Among really popular ice cream chains in the SoCal region, I think Salt and Straw is one of the strongest contenders when it comes to quality, portion, consistency and uniqueness of flavors. Comparing to Wanderlust Creamery, I think the quality of the ice cream, consistency and portion of the servings for the price is better at Salt and Straw. This is one of my favorite ice cream shops of all time and I love how they have limited edition monthly flavors (changes every first Friday of the month) and also their classics. I go here almost every month to try their new flavors, and it's free samples so I always ask to sample them! I went recently for their Summer Picnic series, and they were all so tasty! I got their Smoked Mac and Cheese which was creamy and had elements of crunchiness from the bread crumbs. I also got the Honey Lavender, which is my all-time favorite. It's the perfect amount of sweetness and flavor! I like to get a single ($6.50) split (+$0.50) scoop, which is two smaller scoops and it's worth it to me since you can try multiple flavors. Their ice cream is on the pricier side but it's comparable to other specialty ice cream shops in the area. I went on a Thursday afternoon around 5 PM and there was no line. But I've been later in the day and there's usually a line out the door but it moves fast! There's not much seating inside except for a few stools, so we usually end up just eating it outside. I will build up the courage to try it next time HAHA. I sampled the cinnamon snickerdoodle and that one was delicious. I ultimately ended up not getting that flavor because I was craving more of a fruit flavor. However, I will for sure get 1 scoop of this flavor next time I come back. - - Pink Rosé and Watermelon Sorbet (5/5): I got a kids scoop of this one because I didn't have much of a sweet tooth yesterday. But I really liked the flavor as it was refreshing on a hot summer day. The staff there ensured that it's non-alcoholic, so don't worry, it is family-friendly. This flavor is also vegan and gluten-free! The staff were really nice and super helpful. They were more than happy to let us sample whatever flavors interested us. I wish the shop had seats inside so that we could sit and enjoy our ice-cream. But there were seats outside in the cute little alleyways that had chairs and tables for us. It got me craving ice cream lol Yolanda recommended 3 places. SAlt & Straw was her first choice. I like exotic & unique flavors. Some of the crazy flavors I had in the past were garlic, olive oil, and lobster ice cream. I dont think any flavors can get crazier than that. This place definitely passed for their interesting flavors. I was intrigued by the avail options. First sample was the Pear & Blue Cheese lol I would never think of eating blue cheese ice cream. Odd flavor, but it tasted good lol I can really taste the blue cheese. 2nd was the Arbequina Olive Oil. I can really taste the olive oil. It did leave a bit of a bitter taste, but it wasn't bad at all. 3rd was the Strawberry Honey Balsamic w/black pepper. I was hesitant to try this one. Balsamic & black pepper in ice cream sounded insane. Lol it was pretty sour. I couldn't detect the flavors with just the sample. After trying some, I decided to go with the flight. It was difficult to pick only one flavor lol I was surprised that the flight came in 4 instead of 3. I chose the olive oil, their limited edition flavors, cornflakes cookies/Marionberry Jam, Snap'N Crackle Marshmallow Treats and for the last flavor, I wanted a coffee flavor. However, the gal gave me the strawberry balsamic one lol I enjoyed all the flavors. The balsamic ended up pretty good lol The service was great. The gal was patient. Two workers are busy helping customers, while most of the rest of the Gen Z workers avoid eye contact, act like you are not there, only interact with one another joking around with no sense of urgency, and when one of them finally decides to free up and to take on customers, they call forth people out of order and those customers clearly know they've cut in line (white worker girl calling to her a white customer etc.) Dreadful experience. I don't recommend this location. In fact, Bacio di Latte is just a block west of here. Their lines always move quickly and their customer service is always top notch. Please go there for their delicious gelato and excellent service. read more

I love love love Salt & Straw! The quality of ice cream and the unique flavors is above and beyond. At this specific location the service was just lovely. The line was super long but the staff moved through it quickly and efficiently. This store is bigger than the few Salt & Straws I have been too, however there is not a ton of seating. Most people seemed to stand outside. And of course its Colorado Blvd so parking is hard to come by. For flavors, they are all great, but my personal favorite combo is a split single scoop of honey lavender and sea salt and caramel ribbons. This combo is unmatched. I first had Salt & Straw in Portland so when they started to expand like crazy, I was delighted. Bi-Rite would always have the ultimate spot in my heart for ice cream in SF but Salt & Straw kind of started the whole ice cream industry in Pasadena I felt. Since then, wanderlust and many ice cream places have opened up. For the most part, most of their flavors are really good so I won't pinpoint anything specifically. The best part is that they have new monthly flavors so you won't even get tired of the usual flavors. Also, it's just always best to try a lot of them to find out what's suited for you. I had it two weeks ago and they had some IPA and stout flavors that were really delicious. The line is usually ok...even if there is a line, it usually goes by pretty quick and the staff is usually very friendly. If you're in the area after dinner, might as well grab ice cream. read more

I have to say I typically find the ice cream at salt & Straw not very flavorful, with that said I always go with my grandchildren because they think it is fun. This last time I went I got the double vanilla with the cherry topping. The flavor was so plain, it tasted like ice milk with ice pieces and the cherry topping was actually a single cherry on top as the pic below shows. I was seeing reviews on Salt & Straw on Yelp and was so excited to try it. Did it live up to expectations? Ehhhh, sort of not really. Some of their flavors are really different that you can't find anywhere else. They also have their standard flavors and seasonal flavors. They actually have a sign recommending that you taste all the flavors, which I thought was nice. I didn't want to take up too much time from the workers, so I just sampled two. I tried the honey lavender and pear & blue cheese. They were most definitely different. The lavender was heavy in the honey lavender and I could really tasted the blue cheese in the pear & blue cheese. While it was nice to sample, it wasn't my thing. I went with two flavors that were more traditional. We were heading to dinner after so I didn't want to eat too much. It's great that they actually offer a split scoop, so you can actually get two flavors in one scoop. I chose the sea salt w/caramel ribbon and coffee & love nuts.
