This was my first time at Sal's. I don't know if Sal was there, but he would be dismayed at the way in which the employees were representing this establishment. My friend pointed to a pizza that had excess cheese layers covering any visible toppings and asked, "What is that?" to which the kind man responded, "I don't fucking know. It's pizza!" They then refused to allow us to purchase more than one slice or tell us what kind of pizza they had (spoiler alert: they didn't know). At that point they then just began turning customers away because they didn't want to make more pizza (or sell what they already had made!!). I grabbed some pizza here on my way to a Red Sox game. Sal's is what I'd consider to be pizza or convenience, not really of the best taste. The slices are decent, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. I do recall that it seemed very pricey, but that's to be expected, given it's right outside Fenway Park. I do believe they also sell Sal's inside the stadium, but I'd prefer to eat in advance and not wait in a huge line. The vibes are great on nights where there's a game happening, but I'm guessing it's quieter there otherwise. read more

I was on my way to a Boston Red Sox game and stumbled across this place. The smell of fresh pizza drew me in as I am a die hard pizza lover. I decided I would eat here instead overpaying for hot dogs and pizza at Fenway Park. Orders a few slices of pizza. Pizza crust was amazing and they were large slices. I had pepperoni with banana peppers and it was very delicious. Perfect combination of meats and cheese. I got full on almost 1 1/2 slices but that hit my spot. Went to Fenway Park and enjoyed the game but did not have to buy anything there to eat except ice cream because of Sals. Give this place a try if in the area. read more

How can you get any better than a large slice of pizza across the street from Fenway Park?? I came in here after leaving a Red Sox game early since it was pretty cold out. You could smell the pizza before you even see Sal's. I'm a pizza snob and love all thin crust pizza. It wasn't too busy since it was after dinner time, but if the police officers are eating here, then I know it's good. The staff was friendly when we entered and after placing our order, they grabbed the large slices and put them in the over to heat them up for us. We ended up ordering the Marguerita pizza slices and can say that they are pretty generous with the slice. DELICIOUS! I frequent Boston quite a bit now and will always stop in for a piece. read more

I had heard that this place was a classic that you have to hit up when going to Red Sox games, so I decided to give it a try during the Playoffs. It was not crowded, but definitely had a good amount of patrons stopping through for a bite, and even some people who seemed to be just hanging around watching the game. I gave a slice of "Bacon Cheeseburger" a try. I've had bacon cheeseburger pizza from Domino's (yes, really) and I was kind of disappointed with Sal's rendition. They add ketchup on top, but do not switch the cheese to cheddar, which is an important aspect of the cheeseburger taste. The pizza seemed pretty undersauced, I wasn't sure that they even put any sauce on it other than the drizzle of ketchup on top. It wasn't BAD, I was just expecting more. Would I come here again? Sure, if I'm at a Red Sox game or going for a night out in Fenway and I want some reasonably priced, average pizza. And I'd stick to pepperoni or cheese, which are much harder to mess up. Although, there are a fair amount of fast food/fast casual chains nearby that could do the job just as well, if you aren't set on having the 'Fenway' experience of getting Sal's Pizza. read more

Great little dive pizza place! This is not a family place at all in my opinion. It is a standing around eating pizza and drinking a beer type of pace, not kid friendly. Great for take out and that is what we did. Called it in, walked over and picked it up and took back to the hotel. Pizza was hot and delicious. The staff was very friendly. The joint is across from Fenway. When we went there was an event, so there were chairs all over and such...typical of this type of location on a game or event day...cannot fault them for that. Really good pizza. The slices ARE HUGE. I love that when someone orders more than one, they're like you know how big the slices are right? They have a lot of options for toppings and they're really fast. They also have a lunch special which I really need to try. I was visiting Boston from L.A. and attending a game at Fenway. Saw it driving in and thought it had to be great. Went after the game, in fact talked friends into it. Worst pizza I've ever paid for. All they had was cheese and something else smothered in onions. I had the cheese. Huge rectangular pieces that could only satisfy a stoner. I could have had better pizza at the school lunch counter. Was massively thick bread with a little sauce and even less cheese and no taste. There were no red peppers out on the tables. Place was filthy. Seriously. And the guy wringing me up was obviously stoned and could barely understand me. Wrung me up for multiple sodas when only my friend asked for one. When I asked how many he wrung up, it seemed to cripple his brain. Finally I said I'll just take a soda too. tried to get a fountain one but he was incapable of understanding this and kept reaching for the bottled ones. I am completely baffled how a total dump like this stays in business other than it's right next to Fenway. I want to give this place a better rating so badly, but lately the experience has been less than ideal. First, I do love Sal's and the pizza/food I would recommend, so this review is more on the customer service and the experience. I've been coming here for years for lunch and until this Summer haven't had any issues. This Summer however, every person behind the counter has either forgotten my order, not cut the slice in half after politely asking for that, had a chip on their shoulder, or served me an under heated slice. A lot of the folks behind the counter seemed younger and completely uninterested in being there. This is a shame, because the folks who used to be back there were great; good conversations, they greeted you, and always kept their composure when it was slammed. Also, and thankfully this was a one-time occurrence, I went in for a slice and a soda once and the place was filled with flies. Not a huge issue at first until I went over to the soda area and seemed to walk into about 30 flies. I probably wouldn't complain or nitpick so much if this is how it always is, but this location used to be top notch and the downgrade in service and the experience is really noticeable. So I dropped by for a slice and got a much different experience than when I had ordered a entire freshly made pie. The reheated slices are just not good. The cheese doesn't melt right, the crust gets dried up. The flavor is just muted and unenjoyable. Maybe this is par for reheated slices (had similar experience at Regina Pizzeria as well as place in NY) but.. blah. Both Otto's and Upper Crust do a better job reheating slices. read more

Young man behind the counter was ignoring all of the waiting customers (at least five of us) until man in charge specifically asked for his help. When he turned to me, he had his finger in his mouth, then asked what he could get me. I said, "You're going to wash your hands first, right? Your finger was just in your mouth." He gave me a look of disgust, turned around and ran his one hand under water in the sink for about two seconds. No soap. No effort. Turned back to me. Went here with a friend before a Red Sox game the other day because we were in a rush and it was the only place around that wasn't busy. I just ordered fries and she ordered the Pollo Parmigiano (a chicken parm sandwich basically). I got my fries within just a few minutes. They were just average. It almost seemed like they took them out of the fryolator the second they were "sort of" done. They weren't undercooked - just LOOKED undercooked. They definitely could have stayed in there for a couple more minutes. Bland but expected. The reason I took off three stars was because my friend never received her sandwich. We first waited a few minutes since we obviously understood that the chicken had to be cooked, but other people started to get their food that had ordered after us so we decided to ask. The cashier went and reminded the cooks, but they never began to cook any chicken (you can see into the kitchen through a window). We then asked for a second time albeit it being sort of awkward since we'd already asked. She went to remind the cooks again and they STILL did not begin cooking any chicken. By now it'd been a half hour, and as I mentioned earlier we were in a rush. We ended up leaving without ever receiving the sandwich which was probably never even made. I normally don't post reviews like this, but I was really disappointed in the service we received here. Today I had to order pizza for an event, and choosing Sal's was the best decision! Not only were the cheese and pepperoni pizzas delicious, but our salad, garlic knots and gluten free pie were a hit! They were also really accommodation with the coupons and their customer service when we needed a reprinted receipt was top notch. I went here recently before a Sox game. It may have been the worst slice of pizza I've had from a restaurant. With that being said, I've had Sal's over on Tremont Street and I actually like their pizza. This place though for some reason reminded me of the frozen pizza you can buy for like $2. Elio's I think is the name of it. So I got a slice of pepperoni and a slice of cheese. Pieces are large but they don't make up for the lack of flavor. And when you get it, I don't know if it wasn't cooked long enough but the cheese just kind of fell off of the pizza so it was like I was just eating dough with sauce. One good thing about the place is that they serve beer and as far as Fenway before a game goes, you won't have to wait for lines and you're not paying $10 for a draft like you do inside the ballpark. read more

Ordered a turkey club since I had time to wait for my concert in Fenway. Staff is disinterested in providing a high level of customer service. After 25 minutes of no action I asked for the status, the chick in the front leaves then comes back and says " he is working on it now" so clearly it took my double check for them to make my food otherwise I might be sitting there forever. Sandwich was mostly bread and mayonnaise. In fairness maybe I should've gotten pizza, or better yet, just walked down the street to Popeyes. Came to Sal's, like I often due when the sox are in town, for a slice. The service is overall ok. Sometimes you have friendlier help that you can have a conversation or a laugh with, sometimes it's strictly business. Today it seemed as if the whole place was being run by younger individuals who really didn't care. A few times while I was waiting the phone just kept ringing with 4 people behind the counter. Ordered my pizza and asked that it was cut in half. When my pizza came out, they didn't bother to cut it. Not the end of the world. 2slices came out and I asked that mine was cut and if I could have it in a bag. The kid grabs the cutter and the other guy asked that he change the channel to nesn (why it wasn't done before the game started is something I don't understand as I can't remember any time I was there and the game wasn't on). Instead of cutting my pizza and putting in a bag, I had to listen to them go back and forth on what NESN was. What really got me is when it was finally figured out the kid cut my slice and put it in a bag and I held my hand out to take it. Instead he puts it on the counter and spins/ slides it to me. The pizza is solid, but if they can't at least be decent, I'm going to rethink my pizza choice. read more
