I had my hair done couple of weeks back but I waited to write this review because I'd like to do it not based on the hair I had fresh out of the salon but on how it holds up on my day to day. The HAIRSTYLIST: Charlie is the one of the most skilled and most friendly hair stylist I've ever met. He works with his scissor like no other. He pays attention to every strand and applies tricks just like those we see on Master Chef but with his scissors on our hair. The HAIR. I came for the whole shebang - cut, root touch-up, balayage. I came with a long hair, different hair color almost orange that is showing my original black hair about 2-inches. He cut my hair to a shoulder length, did root touch ups, did the balayage and killed the almost orange color with toner, then was styled with his wife. The result was really good and it held up even after a few weeks and with my no-fuss styling day to day. My husband said I looked years younger. The COST: Cost is a bit high. With everything and with some discount given by Charlie, I end up paying a little over $300. The VERDICT: If you think you are worth it, then by all means give it a GO. read more

If you're looking for a quality haircut Charlie's your man. I've been getting haircuts from him for 5+ years now and never had a single bad experience. In fact, I've even followed him around between 3 different salons because his haircuts and the overall experience is just that good. :) I personally have really prickly and coarse Asian hair. I've had hairstylists in Japan tell me that my hair was one of the roughest they've had to work with. But Charlie found a way to make it work. He got it figured out and never fails to make me look good. This is my 2nd review on Yelp, the 1st one is a negative review for one of the most horrible restaurants I ever been. The second one, which is this one, is for the talented Charlie who gave me a beautiful balayage that made all of my friends jealous. I have been to many hair salons, some are good too but I never actually satisfied with the result till I found Charlie. Not to mention he is so close to my house too (I wished I found him earlier so I didn't have to travel all the way down to Seattle). About a week ago I went to Charlie with a haircut crisis, but he fixed it right up and amazed me with his talent! He does an amazing job and finishes with just the right amount of time. I booked an appointment with Charlie for a cut and color for 9/24/17 several days ahead. I arrived early and was made to wait 15 minutes. OK, it happens. I sat in the chair and he looked over my hair, and was very critical of my last haircut. He said they made mistakes and the only way to fix it would be to cut it short, which I have an emotional problem with, so I cried a little and asked him not to cut it short. That's not his fault and he just wants to help, right? Then he asks if the other stylist had a valid license. Yeah, so now I feel extra humiliated. But then he assures me he can fix it. Great! So we start the hair coloring. He puts the goop in my hair, and I start coughing. His wife (not him) asks if I'm OK and brings me some water. I nod and try to get it under control. I have asthma but have had my hair professionally colored many times with no problem, so I figured it would go away. Minutes passed, it got worse, so I went outside to get fresh air, and watched him drive away. What? I guess he figured he had a half hour to kill. Later when I texted him, he said he had to pick up his daughter. Still seems like the law is that you have to stay and watch that your customers don't pass out and die from the fumes of your products! I figured I'd try to tough it out. Several times, I went back to the chair, would start coughing from fumes, and felt like I might throw up or pass out. Yeah, I'm an idiot, but I didn't know what to do. I finally begged his wife when she finished working on someone else if she would wash the goop out. She did but by then I was pretty sick. The color seemed to be set, and because I know what it's like to be an immigrant with your own business trying to make it, I figured I'd pay for the color and get out. $130 was also upsetting, but the service was done, so I decided to pay. Only the wife wouldn't take my card. So she called him several times while I coughed and gagged, and finally he showed up, ran my card, and I got out of there. I wasn't totally sure I'd make it home. He wanted me to text him that I made it home OK, which I did, and he pressured me to come back for the haircut. After being treated like human garbage in every way? I don't think so. I don't understand why I was treated so badly. Maybe it's my weight or my race or maybe he just had a bad day. But he never apologized for nearly killing me. He did say he would've apologized if I didn't like the color. I was sick for hours afterwards. FYI Charlie: When possible, salon owners, beauty schools, and workers should avoid using products containing formaldehyde, methylene glycol, other ingredients that are treated as formaldehyde under OSHA regulations. If salon owners decide to use products that may contain or release formaldehyde, then they must follow the requirements in OSHA's formaldehyde and hazard communication standards such as testing salon air during treatments to determine formaldehyde levels, providing adequate ventilation and appropriate personal protective equipment for workers performing treatments and customers receiving treatments. Failure to follow the requirements of the formaldehyde and hazard communication standards has consequences. OSHA has issued citations and fines to salons and other employers (e.g., beauty schools) for using products that contained or could release formaldehyde and failing to follow the requirements in OSHA's formaldehyde standard (e.g., testing the air to determine formaldehyde levels, providing protective equipment, providing training). read more

So, you could imagine how weary I was of searching for "The One" to take over cutting my super straight and thick hair. I've lived here for 5 years and until now have never felt compelled to write a review on any business that I've gone to (be it a restaurant, store, service of any kind, etc.) but I think Charlie deserves one. I've always felt iffy getting my hair styled locally - I have thick, coarse Asian hair. A LOT of it. I can lose enough to start a campfire and my head wouldn't look any different. In my past experience, I always felt that stylists in America wouldn't always know how to handle my hair type well so I always wait until when I go visit Asia to get a haircut. But one day, after over a year since my last cut, my boyfriend looked at me and said: "You look like a lion". That compelled me to find someone who has the skills to handle the forest on my head. Here's where Charlie comes in. Charlie listened to my desires patiently and made me felt very comfortable from the moment I sat in his chair. I felt that he actually cared about my needs and making sure I got the best out of what we have to work with; I'm not just another head he has to trim. I usually don't like to talk when I get service of any kind - and Charlie doesn't try to make you talk if you don't want to. But if you like to chat, he has a sense of humor. In my book, if I receive a service, the tip should be based on whether it was "subpar" to "above and beyond my expectations". Charlie never once made me feel like I was just another means to an end (aka more $$$ from tips). To top that off, usually at the end of haircuts my past stylists would always say or do something that made me feel like they're desperate for me to come back so they could stack more services/fees/push other random promos on my plate (which effectively turns me off so I never stuck to one person). But this place does NOT live up to its ratings. The stylist Charlie thinned out my hair wayyyyy too much and I ended up having super choppy layers that looked horrendous from the back. I went to see Charlie for a digital perm, which is not a service that seems to be widely available in this area so I was very excited to find him. He had advised me that it would be a long process but that the results were much more long-lasting and natural than with a regular perm, which I appreciated because this has been my experience in the past also. Charlie is very meticulous, detail-oriented and thorough, taking time with each step to achieve the perfect result. He listened to my input but also gave gentle guidance about what he thought would be best. I am very happy with the results and the fact that my hair feels healthy and strong. I also really appreciated that Charlie was very honest about what the perm would and wouldn't be able to achieve (more volume on top, for example) and gave me blowdrying tips about how to achieve the effect that I want.
