I wish I saw the previous review on Charlie's unprofessional attitude. I experienced very similarly. He had nothing but complaints about my hair. Every time he opened his mouth, it was some dumb emotional complaint about the quality of my hair. First, I am not a vain person, I go to the salon once a while when I know I need help. Why is he expecting every person who walks into his doors to be someone with perfect hair? If I had perfect hair, I wouldn't be going to a salon now would I? Second, I didn't pay for a lecture. And my split ends and heavy hair was due for some loving. I was able to read some reviews and decided to book with Charlie. I had to pay a $50 deposit just in case I was a no show. Seemed reasonable to me. Tho his messages showed a sense of urgency which slightly caused me to be anxious, and raise red flags. But don't worry guys. He's legit! Haha My hair was properly cut to equal lengths. It went from crazy lioness, to proper and easy to maintain, light and healthy queen of the jungle hair. That's a good thing. Trust me. I wanted low maintenance hair. The one that you don't have to do anything, and it'll fall back into its magical space and look amazing ... just like in the manga. And boy did Charlie deliver. I was able to get a wash too, and with a 3 minute leave in treatment that made my hair so smooth, I couldn't stop running my fingers through my hair all day. I waited to write this review to see what my hair would look like after I washed it myself, and do absolutely the bare minimum in brushing to see what it looked like... and I'm still the happy jungle queen! Also.. he used to charge $60 back then idk why he raised the haircut price when my hair is already pretty short (above shoulders). He is talented at cutting hair, don't get me wrong. But I really don't understand why he would think it's a good idea to tell me, a woman, that "women are so irrational and over the top when they are having their time of the month." I didn't pay a grown ass man to complain about his woes about women to me. What also doesn't sit right with me is knowing that when he was interested in my friend who got her hair balayaged and cut by him, he later texted her phone number to ask her out which made her feel very uncomfortable because it was a violation of her professional boundaries with him. I moved to WA recently from LA and was pleased to find a hair stylist that has had training in Korea and Japan. Having very thick and straight hair many stylists struggle with cutting my hair. This wasn't the case with Charlie. He educated me on how I can style my hair differently and even gave me two rounds of haircut in a single session until I was fully satisfied with the set. He may be candit with expressing his opinion, but you can tell that he is honest and prides his work. Highly recommended if quality matters most to you. My longtime barber broke up with me and moved to Florida. I am happy for him, but not really, cos it's hard to find a stylist who understands Asian hair. After two mediocre haircuts from a stylist that supposedly caters to Asians, I came across Salon Uni on Yelp. I decided to give it a try. Charlie, at Salon Uni, was very detail oriented. I could really tell that he knew what he was doing. Upon meeting him, he told me that he already looked over my hair and my head and knew exactly how to make my hair look good. He promised to give me a better haircut than what I got last time and he delivered indeed. I really appreciate his taking the time to make sure that I had a good fade on the sides. In addition, he also washed my hair before he started working on it as well as rinsing+conditioning afterwards. Charlie was very professional--the entire experience was very pleasant. Based upon this experience, I have decided that I will be going to him from now on. Since my initial visit, I've been back several times and I have to say that my experiences have been inconsistent. Despite making an appointment, I've had to wait upwards to 30 minutes to get seated and I've noticed that Charlie spends less time with my hair when he's running late. At my most recent appointment, I asked to get my usual layers and Charlie gave me very choppy, uneven bangs that I didn't ask for. He's also been consistently lecturing me on the condition of my hair even though I have purchased and have been regularly using the products he recommended. Lastly, I've noticed that he never uses any heat protectant which makes me absolutely cringe when he styles my hair afterward! Overall, I think Charlie is very talented but I will look elsewhere for a stylist who doesn't lecture my ear off and will listen to get my cut right. Waiting several months for bangs/bad cut to grow out is a traumatizing experience I wouldn't wish on anyone and that's more than enough to keep me from coming back. read more

Charlie is amazing. This is the best Japanese Permanent Straightening I have ever received, for the best price I have ever been charged. Not only does he create perfect tresses, but he's really fun to be around. After this treatment, I literally have to do nothing but wash my hair in the morning. It air dries perfectly sleek. I wish I can give Charlie (Chang Lee) zero stars. Do not even consider him to do your hair. If you are a woman, stay far, far away. Not only will he ruin your hair but he'll probe and ask you many inappropriate questions (sexual harassment). Also, he only takes payment by Venmo so when he does a bad job on your hair, you can't dispute the charge. His work/service is not at par compared to many of the experienced stylists around this area. He should not be charging $70+ for haircuts and $200+ for color. The haircut and coloring he did on my hair were not worth $390. How can he charge this much when he did not do exactly what I asked him to do? I asked for warm caramel and blonde waterfall balayage. Instead, he gave me copper/brass chunky highlights without any dimensions of low/high highlights. Also, I asked him to trim only 1 inch from the length because I'm growing my hair, and I wanted my ends cut across with long layers. Instead, he cut-off 2 inches, rounded the ends, and gave me choppy layers. Because of the way he cut my hair, the ends look very sparse. Prior to my appointment, he confirmed what hair style (color and cut) I wanted. If he couldn't follow-though or couldn't color or cut my hair like I asked, then he should've been upfront. The light in the salon was dim that I couldn't confirm my hair color, so throughout my appointment, I reminded him that I wanted warm caramel and blonde tones. Each time he reassured me that my hair is exactly what I asked for. He kept on telling me that he is a master colorist and he even went to Japan and Korea to get trained. He didn't even let me check my haircut before he curled my hair. While he started curling my hair, he tried to reassure me that he had cut my hair like I asked him, and that he is an experienced hairstylist, unlike the Americans (white) stylist who doesn't know how to cut Asian hair. From the beginning and throughout my appointment, I told him that I needed to do some work. Instead of cutting back the chatting and focusing on doing my hair, he probed my personal life with many inappropriate questions. He asked me if I was married or dating. How he wished he had met me earlier to have a chance to date me. How he wants to get to know me. He said that American men are no good and they don't treat women that well. I felt really uncomfortable. I told him that I'm happily dating and my personal life is none of his business. Although I wanted to up and leave, he was already cutting and coloring my hair. He purposely waited to ask his questions after he started working on my hair, making it hard to get up and leave. If this was a workplace, I would've filed sexual harassment with human resources. For years, I've been getting my hair done in Seattle. After moving to Bellevue, I decided that I give one of the local salons a shot. Most of Salon UNI's review was good so I thought I give it a shot. Boy was I wrong. After carefully reviewing the pictures on Salon UNI's Yelp account, I noticed in the picture that there were others in the hair salon. When others are around, Charlie will put more effort and do his best but when no one else is at the salon, like how it was during my appointment, he'll slack off and take long breaks. Also, if he thought my hair looked good, why wouldn't he take pictures of my hair to post on Yelp? He didn't because he knew that he didn't do a good job. Had a great experience with my cut from Charlie! I am usually quite frugal and don't tend to get my hair done often but needed a fresh touch up. I showed him a general picture of what I wanted. I could tell he was trying to manage expectations but honestly I wasn't hoping to look exactly like the photo - just a general feel. I've always had long black hair and wanted to try a new hairstyle. First, I had a haircut to add layers to my round face. I was very pleased with Charlie's technique to add "body" to my hair as it was the technique ive been used to in Asia. After moving to the US, I noticed that other salons usually just cut my hair diagonally to frame the face w/o even adding layers to the back. Perhaps because they are always in a rush to get to the next customer. It was also my first time to try balayage and Charlie was very thoughtful and patient in explaining the process.
