I'm terrified about trying out salons for the first time. Therefore the past year I've been traveling down to NC to get my hair done. Inconvenient I know. I finally realized I need a place in DC. I've heard really good things about Salon Revive on Yelp so I finally decided to take a chance. I made my appointment online. It was so simple. It was really easy. I didn't have to go back and forth with anyone of the phone. When I needed to reschedule it took me about 3 minutes online. I was running about 10 minutes late for my appointment. I called to let them know and there was no irritation in the woman's voice what so ever. When I got there they asked was it my first time and showed me around. Then I was taken straight back to Meron. She asked me what I wanted and checked my hair out. She let me know I needed a moisturizing treatment, but was cool when I told her I wanted to wait until the next time. Then I went to the shampoo area. I can't believe I didn't ask the shampoo guy's name, but he was HEAVEN. The best shampoo I have ever had hands down. He made sure the water temperature was exactly how I wanted it. Then scrubbed and massaged my scalp perfectly. I thought I was at a spa! He also blew out my hair. Here's a little background about my hair. I'm all natural. My hair is EXTREMELY thick and I usually get grunts from people trying to blow it out. Either I missed his grunt or my hair thickness didn't frighten him. When he finished I could already tell that my hair was going to come out amazing. Once he finished he sent me back to Meron. I only set for about 4 minutes while I waited for her to finish her last client. Meron straightened my hair so well that I walked out the salon looking like a got a fresh relaxer! I'm one of the people who also take a comb to the hair salon so I can tweak it how I want when I leave. That day I happened to leave it at home. Thank God; I didn't even need! I was so in love with my look. Even better, she reminded me that while I loved the straight look I don't need to have it straightened every week. She wasn't just concerned about that I was happy with my look; she wanted to make sure my hair stays healthy as well. I was so impressed that before I left I made another appointment in 2 weeks to get a moisturizing treatment and straw set. I'm very picky about my hair, but I trust Salon Revive with it. I'm glad that I've found a new home with them. No more NC hair travels for me! read more

I came here from a recommendation a few years ago but moved around and Salon Revive was no longer close to me. At the time, it wasn't worth traveling all the way back for. When I returned to the Shaw neighborhood earlier this year, I decided to try Salon Revive again. This time, I was given Hera as my stylist. She is lovely! And REALLY took her time to figure out what was wrong with my hair (horrible highlight job) and how to fix it. She consulted others, we went through discussing the many options and the pros/cons of each, looked at colors, and in the end, I was SO PLEASED with how we fixed it. Visited Revive today for the first time and I was blown away. It felt very safe during the pandemic. They took my temp and had me fill out a questionnaire. I then had my very kinky curly hair washed, blown out and straightened by Galya who is amazing. She's so knowledgeable about type 4 hair. I told her my concerns about styling tools and she explained to me the tools she would be using and then Showed me the minimal shedding after she completed with the detangle. Hiwot is the best!!! I trust no one else with my hair. from my first visit to my most recent the stuff here is kind and friendly. they are knowledgeable and just everything wonderful. My appointment began right on time, the staff was very friendly, and both stylists who handled my hair were careful and skillful at styling and detangling it. I had Hiwot and she did a fantastic job and my curls lasted for a couple days. She came off as a nice and gentle person. I paid $45 for a shampoo, blowdry and curl. Why the 4 stars? Well I had to call several times just to get the receptionist to answer the phone. When I came in, I checked in with the receptionist then sat down. A few minutes later I was getting ready to put on the salon's black protective jacket and asked the receptionist something. She misunderstood and thought I was leaving and threw my jacket in the basket. I'm thinking what planet is she on? She saw me walk in 5 minutes ago, it's not that busy and a small salon, and most importantly my hair is in a ponytail! When I paid in cash, she didn't give me my change. I had to ask for it after she closed the drawer. I noticed that Vonetta had 2 customers come in at the same time. My hair was shampooed soon after I arrived, but then I had to sit and wait with wet hair while Hiwot did 2 other customers in front of me. Why do we make appointments? Hiwot said she would put me under the dryer to let some of the moisture out. If you're double booked and I have to sit under the dryer for a significant amount of time without rollers, then it should be a deep conditioner! My biggest peave is the incompetent shampoo girls that Hiwot also puts in charge of blow drying her clients hair. Vonetta blow dries her clients hair, why can't Hiwot? I have 100% natural African-American 4b-c hair. So it's very kinky, curly, coily, and difficult to straighten. Before this appointment, I had not gotten my hair straightened in two years! My appointment was the day before Hurricane Irene so I needed a 'do that could survive the 'cane. I went to Salon Revive to get my hair straightened for a good trim and also for a new look. I would definitely go back and I recommend it for other naturals looking for a good straighten and cut. The only thing I didn't like is that I don't think the shampoo girl knew much about washing and detangling hair like mine but she did a decent job (took 1 star off here). Hiwot, my stylist was great!! I could tell that she was focused on the overall health of my hair. I liked that I inquired about color and she told me to be careful because certain colors could straighten my hair-- very helpful because I would be devastated if my curl pattern was altered. Anywho, Hiwot left no curl behind! She blow-dried, flat ironed and trimmed my hair beautifully. It was bouncy and shiny. My straight hair survived Irene (Granted, I didn't leave my place for 2 days) and lasted for a week. It could have lasted longer, but I have a dry scalp and have to wash my hair every week. My straighten and trim cost $65, which I think is a lot, but I recognize the work that it takes to straighten my hair. I would not go to this salon to get a curly, natural hairstyle, but I will definitely keep going back every three months (as Hiwot recommended) for a trim! read more

Dan is the man!!! I went to get my hair done about 2 weeks ago. I went in early, because I was very skeptical about going to him and a new shop. But, he tried his best to make me feel very comfortable. He was gentle and took his time to blow dry and flat iron my hair. I was also very comfortable with the trim and framing he did. I got so many compliments!!!!! One of my main concerns with having someone straighten my natural hair, aside from myself, was heat damage. I am happy to say that was not an issue at all. I was pleasantly surprised to see that my hair went back to its kinky state :) I will be returning to Dan routinely during the colder months. One more thing, bring cash to tip as they don't allow you to put it on your card. They have a personal check or cash tip only. read more

I went to Salon Revive for the first time to hang out with my friend while she got her hair colored. My hair was in a less than glamorous state (natural hair pulled back in the messiest of ponytails as though I'd just rolled out of bed without glancing at a brush). Here's when my day got interesting. DOUG, a stylist there, politely approached me to inform me that my hair was "bothering" him and that he would like to do it for me, for free. I gladly set my pride aside and let Doug work his magic. He blew my hair out, trimmed it, and curled it for me. It was silky, bouncy and gorgeous! I went back to Doug a week later, this time as a paying customer (tip: ask him to "pin curl" your hair if you want the curls to last longer). His prices aren't outrageous like so many overrated DC salons and he's a pleasure to be around. Professional and not too chatty. P.S. OK. I went here because of the Yelp reviews. I have natural hair and I can tell you that for us, kinky - not wavy girls, there are no cheap hairdos in DC. I got a shampoo, trim and blow dry for $55, which is average for A-A salons (and less than the Dominicans charge me). The only down side is that my curls usually last maybe 2 days longer. I blame that on the lightweight Aveda styling products, and i'm fine with it because my hair looks healthy. I've been in DC for 4 years and for the same price others charge me, Salon Revive offered a clean, PEACEFUL environment. I've dealt with the stylist who talks on the cell phone while styling, the stylist who has to break up a fight while styling, the one who does hair in her basement, the one who leaves your hair wet while you wait.. and wait. And for the SAME PRICE I was very happy to just relax and get my hair done without the drama and with Aveda products. I don't believe in wasting my Saturdays in the salon, so I went on a Friday afternoon and had no wait. For the first time ever I wanted to schedule my next appointment on the spot. And they're open on Sundays when parking is free and plentiful, so I think it's definitely worth the money. Update: I no longer go to this salon because they hiked rates on services and seem to be deliberately pricing out black clients. (I hope not to offend, but that's my take on the situation). My flexi rod set went from an already premium price of $80 to $100, before tip and any other add-on you can think of. They also made other changes to parking and credit card policy and didn't notify me when I booked my appointment. I was being wait listed for my stylist and she wasn't booked. So, I had to stop going. Luckily, my stylist left too. I still recommend it for those who can afford it. It's just not worth the money to me anymore. read more

After reading about Salon Revive on Yelp, I decided to give Alyssa a try. And she was amazing! I wanted to change up my hairstyle, so we spent some time just discussing different options. She had a lot of suggestions, but was careful of my hair needs (I'm not up for spending an hour every morning on it!). The actual cut was great, too. She was fun to chat with, and she took her time--clearly a perfectionist, as she carefully tweaked it. Then after she styled it, she took some extra time with me to let me practice. She was great about explaining exactly what it needs. Before I left, we even discussed future cuts I could try, if I want to go even shorter (which I'd expressed some interest in). Alyssa really took the extra time & care to make this whole visit amazing. Now, I'll admit, the receptionist was a bit slow on helping me when I walked it, since she also doubles as one of the sweepers. However, that minor point can't diminish the satisfaction of a great cut, with a stylist who truly cares. read more

I've been going to Salon Revive for two years now. Vonetta is my stylist and she's the best thing to happen to me and my hair chronicles! She is a perfectionist and will politely tell you what is and isn't going to work. She really takes a mental note of your hair and also takes the time to get to know what your personal regime is. For me, I don't like to do my hair so she takes that into account when doing styles as to keep it simple for me. She's very professional and exceptional at what she does. I recommend her to everyone of all races. Salon Revive is a great salon period. They have top notch equipment and I particularly love the steamers for treatments. It's always clean and the staff is very helpful. The prices can be high though, I do admit. But I think you get what you pay for. Check it out! read more

I got a haircut and a relaxer from Delissa. She did a good job on both and really listened to what I asked for. She was attentive, not a big talker (a plus in my book) and very gentle. My only critiques are a) the salon is using a steam system that drips water everywhere. They need to look into that; and b) it was a bit slow (two and a half hours). My first visit to Revive Salon included a cut and highlights for the summer. Yodit was my stylist and she is absolutely phenomenal. With my dark complexion it's important to have someone that understands what colors will complement my skin tone and she nailed it. I've received so many compliments and most importantly when she whirled me around in the chair I have never been happier with how I looked with the cut and color. Yodit really knows color and works hard at ensuring that her clients feel and look good from her work. I would strongly recommend her services. After making an appointment to dye/color, trim, and flat iron my hair I was very pleasantly surprised with how it came out. My hair is 4C(ish), so I was afraid of heat and chemical damage since I usually straighten my hair just a few times a year. This was the first time I had my hair professionally colored and I love how it came out, especially since I wasn't sure exactly what color I wanted to get when I walked in. My hair was a tiny bit overheated from the flat iron, but since I have very fine hair so this almost always happens. I had a wonderful experience with Lily. I JUST decided no more perms for me and I'm not comfortable with a big chop bc my hair is already short. Lily tlked to me about the steps I needed to take to begin my process and I got flexi rods. Even after she finished and the shop was close. I was her last customer she didn't rush and she should me what to do in the morning. I only gave it 4 starts bc of the price it was $40 for a steam treatment and $105 for the flexi rods. Absolutely amazing experience from the time I walked into the door to the time that I left I had about a three minute wait and every staff there was amazing they offered me coffee as I sat under the dryer and moved things around for me my hair stylist made my hair look the best that it is ever looked and felt within the last three years. Since chopping my relaxed hair off early in 08', I have not been to a professional stylist and was very skeptical. I am so happy I was referred to Yodit by a fellow natural, healthy haired co-worker. I love Yodit, but our schedules don't mesh. She's always booked! Ok, so I may be half the blame with my crazy work schedule...buut. She get's my natural hair straighter than no other, and It last about two weeks or so. She trims (not chops) my hair to perfection, and does not rip my hair out while blow drying. I left very happy with my cut and color. I will return. I have a friend who also rocks amazing hair, so I finally asked her who she goes to - she has been going to Yodit for years and I plan to now as well. The service was inconsistent when I went (Saturday 9/11 - but I had time and thus being patient worked in my favor.) I had a 5:30pm appointment. At 5:40 - Yodit sat me down and asked what I wanted to do (I desperately needed a cut and color - I was rocking blond chunks in the front of the face from my prior haircut that had quite a bit of new growth.) You can tell Yodit knows both hair and how to read her customers - she recommended a cut and color that I loved (I am always happy to let the stylist recommend what they think is best.) 5:45-6:15: Sat while my blond was adjusted to match the rest of my hair (this was supposed to be 15mins) - during this time Yodit was working on at least 2 other customer's hair. 6:15-6:45 - wash out first color, add new color. 6:45-7:20 - sat while color developed (this was to take 30mins), there were plenty of magazines and phone calls to make. 5 mins after the timer rang, Yodit realized I was still sitting with color in my hair so she had someone else wash it out of my hair while she worked on another customer. [side note: the woman who washed my hair also got hot water all down my back.] 7:30 - Yodit comes to my chair and starts cutting.... the store was closing, I was her last customer and there was some sort of employee drama going on in the store so needless to say she was ready to go and was distracted. Despite this - the cut came out well and she recommended a product that I've been very happy with (Aveda -Pure AbundanceTM Hair Potion) Salon Revive is an Aveda salon. So, despite the fact that it took 2.5 hours to cut and color (single) my hair, I will return - but I will probably make an appointment earlier in the day. Cut: $55 Color $65 Product: $23 FYI: Yodit will be going on maternity leave in December - so make sure you get to Revive to see her asap. read more

I went to Hiwot for a trim and blow out. I generally wear my hair in an afro or twist out and only get it flat ironed once or twice a year. She was super efficient (I was in and out in just under an hour!) and used good products. Also, my hair looks great! My coworkers have given me so many compliments since I returned from the salon. I can't wait to see how it looks when I go back to my fro style. I definitely plan on going back and would recommend them highly. read more

I've been here plenty of times before and the service in the past was superb. But, I went last Sunday and apparently landed the reject stylist. His name--Doug. For starters, Doug decided to drown my ears with nonsense about how women in New York are better beauty salon patrons than us in D.C. As a woman in D.C. I can't say I appreciated that. He then went on to tell me that no matter how low someone else charges for hair he wasn't going any lower than $60 because his skills and experience needed to be properly compensated. I wouldn't have had a problem with it, I mean, besides the overall tackiness of a statement like that, if the service hadn't been so God-awful. After he lightly (emphasis on light) washed my hair, he took me to the chair for a blow dry. Just an FYI I have a head full of shoulder-length, super thick, natural hair. My curls while wet are deceiving, I'll admit, but because he had already told me he was the almighty-Isis of stylists I figured he could handle himself. I was wrong. He first doused my hair in mouse and grease and countless other unnecessary products, and then blow-dried my hair to a tamed afro. And, for my favorite part. When it came time to flat iron my hair, the self-proclaimed expert dipped his fingers in greasy pomade and rubbed it through the portion he was about to straighten. Of course, what resulted was an oily, stringy strand with a grandma-approved bump under, unsuccessfully masquerading as a feathering curl. After about three of these I couldn't hold back my disappointment and I was taken back to the shampooing station, at which I gave Doug instructions and an abbreviated Aveda product guide. He re-blow dried me using a little smoothing fluid (didn't pick up the witch hazel, like I suggested) and then applied some brilliant emollient gloss before flat ironing. When he finished, he decided to try the control paste and basically had my baby hair game crazy like I was a member of TLC. In the end my hair was still poorly straightened and haphazardly curled. SO DISAPPOINTED!!!! I typically get my hair done professionally 2-3x a year. I've been going to another place but my friend recommended this place so I wanted to try it out. It was a Mother's Day gift to go get a massage and my hair done. I just needed to get a steam treatment and blowout/straightened. Everything was going great until the blow drying. The woman who did the blow drying burned my scalp multiple times and finished before my hair was completely dry. When I got into the stylist chair she had to finish blowdrying it. Then the stylist asked what I wanted and I said I'd like my hair straight. I noticed towards the end that she wasn't really straightening the roots of my hair but then she started explaining that since I had breakage she wanted to protect my hair and that she would add a product that the end that would make it straight and smooth out my edges/tame my fly aways. Well when she finish I my hair was greasy but looked somewhat straight. As I left the salon and I put my hands through my hair and my roots were all untouched. It was just a thick mess in there. And my fly aways were crazy... I mean really, I could've (and DO) my hair much better than this was done. So I turned back and went to have them fix it. She tried fixing it by going back through with the straightener but I think it was too late and impossible to readily get it straight. I was so disappointed. On the verge of tears. What was supposed to be this pampering day off felt ruined by this horrible experience. My hair lasted 3 days. Typically when I do it myself or go to my other salon it'll last 2 weeks. And the worst part is I spent $135 to basically go home and do my hair over again. Very frustrating. read more

The worst haircut ever at a price of $120.00. I was hoping my hair would look beautiful like the other customers in the shop. Everyone else's hair looked beautiful while my hair looked ugly. If your hair is many different textures like my hair is, it may not be the shop for you. The stylist I had yesterday kept asking me if I had a perm even though I kept telling her no. She said my hair would last two weeks but the style is out now and I was there on 6/2/2019. My hair looks like a troll doll's hair. WORST HAIRCUT EVER. The worst part about it is that the stylist gave me her card like I would ever go back to her. Mind you though they are very pricey for the most basic services; they will recommend that you get a deep-conditioning. Depending on the person they have to shampoo and condition your hair, it can be a very pleasant experience or not so much.
