I recently got a haircut from another salon that I wasn't happy with, but didn't want to go back to the same stylist to have them fix it. My teenage daughter and I needed haircuts on short notice, and our usual stylist (the awesome Maria Ferry) wasn't available. So I saw the great reviews here on Yelp, and decided to take a risk. The only stylist I saw specifically named here was Alex, but she wasn't available, and we were handed over to Nicolette. What a wonderful surprise! We both got exceptional haircuts, and my daughter decided on the spur of the moment to get a "fantasy color" treatment of purple with blue underneath. I have had my hair colored purple many times over the years and no one has ever gotten it quite right. By Alex at the salon got it exactly right. She did the bleaching for the right amount of time, suggested I added some fuchsia to being out the dark purple look that I wanted. The results were stunning. Earlier this week I had my hair done by Alex. I had come in wanting a balayage but was pretty nervous because the last time I tried to go lighter at another salon my hair came out a brassy orange (many years ago). All of the staff was very friendly right from the start. Alex listened to my concerns and told me honestly that I wouldn't be able to go as light as I initially requested because it could damage my hair (I started with black hair). So she went to work and did a beautiful job. Occasionally I also had another woman helping (very nice as well). My hair was blended very nicely. There was one face-framing piece that was just a little too bold for me and as soon as I mentioned it Alex went to work on it to make sure I was 100% happy with it. She gave me some waves and I left really pleased with how my hair turned out. I've gotten so many compliments already on the color, I will be back in a month or so to possibly go even lighter! Thank you! Update for hair done again on 4/18: My hair looks even better! Alex lightened up my balayage perfectly (thanks to Maria as well for her help). It's always a bit scary getting your haircut for the first time after moving to a new city, but my experience at Salon Milage was everything I hoped for. I'm not very good at describing what I want when it comes to getting my hair cut, and I also have curly hair that can be a challenge to work with, but Alex knew exactly what I wanted, was quick, friendly, very attentive, and made sure I was comfortable with what she was doing throughout my appointment. Absolutely amazing. I came in for a Women's cut. It was so easy to book an appointment and the online service is great. I showed up early, but there is a great seating area where you can make your own drink. Alex is nice and incredibly knowledgeable. The shampooing was well done- perfect temperature and careful not to pull my hair. I was in and out really quickly with a cut looking exactly like the picture I brought in. Alex was very easy to talk to and even gave me advice on how to ask for what kind of cut I want when talking to stylists. One thing I really like is that the blowdry is not included in the women's cut service, but is an option to add on. This is great for me because it saves $ when I'm on a budget and means that I'm not stuck at the salon forever waiting for my hair to be styled. Sometimes I feel like vendors don't treat a customer as well if they come in with a Groupon, but that was not the case at Milage. Had a consultation with Alex for hair color. First, she grimaced at my naturally black-colored hair, then she told me she doesn't like working with girls with my type of dark hair (level 1) because we "always" want cool tones and that's not possible. I asked her about green shampoo or mask, she said they don't work. She told me the ONLY HAIR COLOR I can ever dream of without red undertones is a level 2 or 3. "It will still be black," she said, but just "not that black." For the record, I was only asking for a dark brown to medium brown. I wasn't asking for blonde. I mentioned if we do a dark brown base and a medium brown balayage then I will come in for two separate visits because I'm very careful with the health of my curls. She said I can't go anything above a level 3, which was still black, as she said (in truth, it is dark brown). I appreciated her honesty and almost believed her, since it's not in her best interest to turn away a client. Luckily, she didn't have an appointment within the time frame I wanted. Well, I went home, ordered a green mask to test on the balayage roots I have, and two days later, I had gorgeous light ash brown! It doesn't fade away since I apply the mask every other week. Needless to say, I will never recommend this salon to anyone, especially not with my "type of black hair." Oh, she also made sure to tell me that my hair was frizzy. I told her it's naturally curly and today I blow dried it the wrong way (hair blowing up instead of down) because I was in a rush and it created a bit of a frizz. She didn't seem to offer a remedy or anything to that frizziness -just wanted to let me know. For context, I have middle eastern origins, my hair is between fine and coarse, and is loosely curled. It is thick, gorgeous, and I get a lot of compliments on it. It's my favorite physical feature in myself. I'm new to the area and have been getting Brazilian Blowouts for years. My hair is soft, thin and random waves with straight hair so its hard to find the right person who can understand my hair. Well I hit the jack pot with Alex. She's very professional, detailed oriented, thoughtful and thorough. She also has a positive energy yet very patient and really listens, which all combined to me makes her a great stylist. 1 star haircut, but 5 star customer service. I got a really terrible haircut (unfortunate choppy layers but only on one side of my head?) here. It's quite bad- I haven't really worn my hair down since the appointment. However, since then they have been great. Completely willing to schedule an an appointment to correct it and when I got sick the day of the correction appointment, understanding about rescheduling. I haven't gone back for the correction yet, but I'm hoping that they will be able to make my hair wearable again! read more

I spent a long time searching for a convenient, affordable, and well-reviewed salon in Somerville, where I live. After reading such positive reviews about Salon Milage, I took a chance and booked a cut with Alex. The salon is clean and bright and comfortable. Upbeat music plays overhead. There are plenty of magazines to read, though I had no time to check them out. I waited barely 5 minutes. My hair had been butchered almost 7 months earlier by another place, and I was visibly anxious about getting "just a trim" at this first visit. Alex continually reassured me that she was only taking so much off. It was obviously very important to her that I was able to relax and enjoy my hair-cutting experience. She didn't make a cut before informing me what she planned to do and asking for my okay. I was very pleased with how great my hair looked and felt. Alex is very nice and competent and she loves her job! The other stylists and their clients seemed happy and comfortable...I have found my new salon!
