What can I say?! After searching for 3 years for the "perfect" salon, I've finally found it! I got an AMAZING haircut, color, and highlights for less than what I paid for at Red Door; and everything is 100% better! My hair came out beautifully, and it looks/feels soft, silky, and healthy! I definitely recommend Sonia, she really goes out of her way to make you feel comfortable, and she's really open to working with you to give you exactly what you want! I love her, and I book every appointment with her, shes HIGHLY recommended! However, all of the stylists really know what they're doing, so don't be afraid! read more

I will NEVER....NEVER go back to this salon. I had an appointment with LUZ today at 2:15 and they called and said she was running behind and wanted to change it to 3:15. I agreed. I get there and 3:00 and waited outside of the salon until it got 3:15. I watched LUZ and a client and another person who looked like someone that would work there. They all got up and moved to another location. I watched LUZ mix up some hair color for someone and I never saw her again. Very strange. How rude! I've been going to this salon for sometime now and used Sarah but Sarah doesn't work on Saturdays and I wanted a Saturday appointment. Sarah never treated me like this. She was always on time, very professional. I always give awesome tips and I DON'T deserve to be treated like this. No one does. Luz, you just lost a client. Learn how to treat people. read more

I am aware that as I am writing this, I am still annoyed/pissed/emotional, so I will try to restrain myself. In fact, I will start with the positives. I went to see Darrell after Bassey E. sent me a personal message about his work and I read her review. First positive - it was very easy to make an appointment, though the people on the phone were largely ignorant of the products he used. Whatever. The good... - I was in an out in under 2.5 hours, which is usually unheard of for African American hair - Erica, who shampoos the hair, was really friendly and had a great attitude - The salon is really clean, though it's in a mall (which threw me at first, but I soon got over it - where I'm from, mall based salon's are generally not that great) - Darrell seems to have a great understanding of the products he uses, even if he didn't bother to explain the various steps to me - The relaxer seems to have come out really well and I did not burn one tiny little bit The bad.... - For "the good of my hair", Darrell elected to cut off what looked to be about 1-2" of length. I have been growing my hair out for the last few years and WITHOUT MAKING SURE IT WAS OKAY, he erased a lot of that work. I understand sometimes you need to lose length for the hair to look healthier, but it is my understanding that if you are taking off more than half an inch, especially with a new client, you should clear it with them first. An officious statement about how you only remove length if its necessary before you start to cut IS NOT OKAY. I am still REALLY upset by this. I was so shocked I was rendered speechless. - My scalp, which never flakes, was flaking really bad as he was combing it at the end. Was this remedied in anyway? Nope, I got some "explanation" about my scalp being exfoliated by the new relaxer process. Umm, how about teaching the shampoo girl how to properly shampoo the hair so that its not flaking? And how about doing the shampoo yourself so when you notice a client's scalp is dry, you can suggest a scalp treatment of some sort? - This is the first time I have gotten a relaxer and did not have some type of deep condition/treatment offered. I know it was a new relaxer system, and maybe its conditioning enough, but that threw me off a bit. Generally black hair is weakened and porous after a relaxer and almost every salon I've been to has recommended some form of deep conditioning to compliment the relaxer treatment. - Before he asked me how I wanted my hair done, he informed me he doesn't "usually" do roller sets. Well, I am a roller set loving diva, so I was unsure how to proceed. I mean, I didn't want a bad roller set, but on the other hand, I then had to endure the blow dryer AND the flat iron on my newly relaxed hair, which kind of annoyed me, especially since I told him upfront that I wasn't big on having a lot of heat in my hair. Also, he nicked my scalp with the flat iron what seemed to be every other time he put it to my head. At this point, the over-trim had already happened, so I was just despondent, annoyed, and ready to get out of there. I don't know. Overall, it wasn't a *terrible* experience (except for the "trim"), but I was left underwhelmed and disappointed. I got what seems to be a really good relaxer, even if my hair is shorter than I would have liked and my scalp is flaking. Maybe he was having an off-day, but I didn't feel like we really connected very much either. All in all, I'm not sure I'd again make the 30 min drive to VA to see Darrell. I think I'm going to keep looking for a salon/stylist for now. BTW, I was charged $135, not $125. That's about average for what I usually pay, so it wasn't a big deal, but for some reason, I didn't feel like I had gotten my money's worth. read more

I have been going to Salon Cielo for a few years. I always had great interactions with all the staff, but kept coming back because of my stylist, Luz. I had very long hair and not only was the cut always great but she always took time to blow out my (super thick) hair perfectly! Earlier this year I decided it was time again to donate and I cut off 12", still leaving a long bob which I asked to be angled. This is where the story gets good. Luz was very careful to make sure I was good with the length and angle and spent the time to make my dramatic change perfect. I've been back for a refresh twice more this year and have to note a few more things for you... 1, This cut (meaning all three of them) literally looks perfect after 5 minutes of blow drying my hair upside down and that's it! No weird flipping out on the sides or back. 2, I waited too long to come back this last time and you know why? Because it grew out three inches and still looked fantastic! 3, Last but not least, Luz is such a sweetheart. I love talking to her but also feel perfectly comfortable being quiet and letting her work her magic. read more

I tried Salon Cielo for the first time today. I read the great reviews and called to make an appointment with Luz. I am so glad I did, she was amazing!!! Super friendly and professional. She listened to me and delivered a beautiful haircut, she made me feel like a princess. She also speaks Spanish so that is a plus for me. The price was not bad since my hair was very long ($50). Ericka washed my hair and she was so sweet as well. Definitely coming back :) read more

Went to Michelle for a haircut and should NOT HAVE! terrible haircut nothing like the picture. Very uneven one side an inch shorter than the other. I asked how do I style it and she said I am not sure. The salon was very dirty and the staff rude. They told me to wait in the mall somewhere until my appt. I had to go to another salon to have it fixed and they were horrified at the terrible cut. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SALON especially this stylist. Naturally, I have long, wavy, light brown hair. But I'm from Dallas, so I highlight the hell out of it, and I love all of the hot tools. After moving to DC, I was in desperate search for a new hair person. If I have to compromise, I'm willing to go to someone who's great with color but only average with cut. So I found myself visiting Sam at Salon Cielo, after I explained my hair needs to the receptionist. The salon itself is very ordinary, and the chairs are abnormally close to one another. Sam is very sweet, and she tried to execute exactly what I wanted, no more, no less. The cut was much better than I expected - long layers in back, face-framing layers in front. But the color fell pretty flat. I don't think she let me "cook" long enough, and the roots didn't lift enough, so the color grew out too quickly. She only used one color, which doesn't give blondes much dimension. Overall, the result was okay, but my search continues. Oh, and it was pretty expensive - $165 for one-color partial highlights and a trim, before tip. read more

Worst customer service I have ever encountered! This was the second and last time I will go to this Hair Salon and both times I was so disappointed. I went here on a close friends recommendation (she said they were a little frazzled and disorderly there .. having gone once on a weekday) and I figured I needed to try someplace nearby since my old stylist in DC moved.. its in a upscale shopping area so I figured it would be a wonderful experience.. it was not. First time I went they seemed to have no clue who I was even when I told them the time of my appointment and my name. My stylist was 30 minutes late, I figured it was a fluke and they did a nice job so no big deal... Second time however.. When I called to make an appointment the woman on the phone when I asked about pricing since I was unsure if it had changed.. she stated "well some of our stylists set their own pricing so I can't tell you, but if you don't like the price when you come and talk to the stylist you can just leave." (So rude and unprofessional)! They told me Saturday is a very busy day so I made a point of coming 15 minutes early.. I was welcomed by them not seeming to think I had an appointment and then barked at "your early!!" And asked to wait.. again not a warm welcome but not a big deal.. they gave me hot tea at least. I met with my stylist talked about what I wanted and then got my lowlights put in. When left at the washing station the woman washed my hair and massaged my head which was pleasant but then told me with a wet warm towel under my neck just a few minutes.. she went to wash 3 other ladies hair..I timed it.. I sat in that sink for 24 minutes with my hair completely cold and wet waiting. I only got noticed when I sat up (neck hurt) and was literally considering walking to the front and complaining when my stylist appeared, yelled at her and then made a bold faced lie about her doing a special treatment... 8 minutes later.. she rinsed my hair apologizing (not her fault) and I immediately walked over to the stylist and she asked what I wanted for a cut and apologized with a half hearted "Saturdays are crazy." started cutting my hair, although my hair cut and color have turned out nicely and I like the way they look I will not go back to this salon. They also tried to get me to book my next appointment (more than once and sell me on when you book so many times you get a free cut or discount or some junk) and When I pay close to $200 for services and 2.5-3 hours of my life I expect to be treated with respect, and have my needs met, not left forgotten and neglected with no real apology or effort made. I've been going to salons since I was 16 and I have never had a worse time (and that includes getting nicked!)! Save your money and time and go somewhere where clients are a priority and not just money walking through the door. read more

It never fails me to trust Michelle. I cut my own hair but go to Michelle for hair color. Because of time constraints, I often resort to boxed products (like Just For Men or Revlon). But I'm never happy with my own results because my hair either looks too intense (dark) or it lasts only 1 week. Michelle uses a specific mix that lasts 3-4 weeks. That's a big deal because my hair is so gray that it tends to shed dyes pretty quickly. I like that Michele always looks up the specific mix that she made on the last visit and then asks whether I want to go lighter or darker. She really knows color, so much that she can tell you how to prevent sunshine from changing the shade of the dye. She also disclosed the big secret about hair color: it's pointless unless you choose the correct shampoo AND conditioner, otherwise the color will change or even vanish. She knows all the products, plusses and minuses. I get Aveda Black Malva which (after my own trial and error) is the one that holds the correct tone. I always get a huge boost of confidence, not just for the color but also for the easy conversation. Michelle's a big fan of science fiction and vintage movies. I can talk to her about anything. read more

Shame, shame on you Salon Cielo. I made appointments well in advance for me and my 2 daughters for up-dos before a black tie event, asking for stylists with up-do experience. Lady on the phone told me that they must "book in order of highest rank" and assured me the stylists (Ellie, Chris, and Phillip) had lots of experience. When we arrived for our appointments, we were asked to take a seat. About 15-20 minutes later, we were told that a stylist had called in sick. One stylist took one of my daughters, then another stylist looked at the up-do photo and could not do braids, and there was no one else. So only 1 of the 3 of us could get our hair done for our big event. Shame on Salon Cielo for not calling us ahead and then letting us sit there, killing time and our chances to try to come up with a plan B. My teen daughters were very excited about their first black-tie event, and Salon Cielo ruined our night and made us late for the event. They are unprofessional and shamefully inconsiderate of their customers. Terrible, terrible experience. read more

Ask for Yum! She is a new stylist who spent 25 years at Saks before they closed their salon. Super sweet and a perfectionist - I have not had this great of a haircut and highlights in a very long time. Yum will spend as long as it takes to get a cut perfect. I'm a pretty low maintenance type person and she is so good at cutting my hair that people think I actually spend time styling it when I don't! The prices they post on their web site are bait and switch prices. When you go to the saloon they will tell you those prices aren't the ones they charge - that each hairdresser sets their own prices and they can't tell you how much until you show up - and then the prices is MUCH higher. I have had the same old hair stylist for years, but felt like I needed a change so I decided to try somewhere new. I went to Luz after reading some of her reviews, and she did an AMAZING job on my long hair. My hair is very long and thick so it can get boring sometimes, but she spiced it up with a lot of layering and framing around the face to give it perfect movement. I told her I was working on growing my hair very long and she completely improved my hair while keeping the length, just like I asked. Disappointed in this place as my most recent visit may have to be my last. I was quoted $110 for single process color and blow after a blow dry appt. When I came back, they had me with a different stylist who wanted $200+. They found me someone else who would be at the price they quoted. My first color and blow was great, and was $110. My second visit I did a color cut and blow, for $140. I didn't like the haircut but could live with it, but then why when I went for my 3rd color 1-2 months later, I'm told I need another haircut? (If I already have split ends, wouldn't that mean the cut was done wrong the first time?) I said no to the cut and was charged $130 for some reason. Same color and blow services (actually kind of unhappy with the blowout this time - maybe because my last blowout at FLOW in Reston was so amazing) but suddenly $20 more. I mentioned it to the woman at the desk, but honestly their receptionists are part of the problem and don't know the correct prices for services. The pricing system just seems sleazy and it's uncomfortable to go and never know what you're paying for. Update: If you get your hair colored here, even after 2-3 washes, if you get your hair wet (for example, swimming) the color will come off and stain your clothing. Very, very annoying. Ruined an expensive white bathing suit this way. read more

I was looking for a new salon and based on recommendations here, went to Luz for a cut. I liked her a lot, but the cut wasn't blended well and was very hard to style. When I went back a few days later for highlights, I pointed this out and she said she would trim it. She really didn't seem to remember having cut it though. The color turned out great, but when it came time to pay, the color (I was told it was a partial) was more expensive than at my previous (too pricey) salon, and she charged me all over again for the cut, even though I pointed out it was a re-trim of a bad cut. I walked out feeling a little cheated, but it got worse....when I changed clothes, I found that the highlighting chemicals had leaked all over my JCrew blouse, bleaching out the color all around the collar and neckline (this has never happened in 20 years of highlighting). I had really wanted this place to work, but needless to say, I won't be going back. read more

terrible experience today- got highlights 3 weeks ago which didn't show up at all (with Michelle). I couldn't tell any difference at all right after and she said, well it should lighten in the sun etc so give it a little while and I can always redo them. Well I called 2 weeks later since you still could not tell I had any hightlights whatsoever (and no one else could tell I had anything done even when I told them) and took the next available appointment which was today (less than 4 weeks after my original appt). At the end of the appt she actually rung me up to charge me for the highlights!!!! I couldn't believe it. She had wasted my time (as I had to come in twice for highlights) and then was actually charging me. The manager Lucy was little help as she said it had to be redone within 2 weeks. No one ever mentioned that! Not Michelle and not the person with whom I made the appt for the 'redo'. I truly couldn't believe it and will never be back here and am telling my friends the same. read more
