I love this place and Kari my hair stylist. At 35, it has been hard going back to the milk chocolate hair color I had growing up. I brought a picture of the color and Kari made it happen for me and you have no idea the joy it is not to see red or brassy undertones in that kind of a job. Even if you don't need color, Kari is the best in Washington, DC at brushing out your hair. My blow dry is the shiniest and healthiest ever when I leave her. Last BIG detail Kari pays attention to : not. breaking. any. strand. of. my. hair. Unlike other stylists elsewhere who have had me cringing on the chair while they pulled and I heard snaps left and right, Kari is so gentle with my strands. Horrible experience. I asked for face framing highlights and this is what I got. Uneven chunky strips of bleach that don't even start at my scalp. These photos were taken right after I got my hair done. OK so I am really cheap when it comes to getting my hair done. Then I like to act all superior when it comes out looking really nice and I'm talking to someone who usually spends a fortune. So Salon Cielo is perfect for that. I haven't yet tried their coloring services, but if and when I do, I'll let you know. I would definitely come here again because it's reasonably priced, and I usually just get a trim -- no major haircuts. The Dupont location is wonderful and they fit me in on very short notice (just a few hours). I wish they offered spa services at this location, because the prices listed on their Web site for facials and other similar services are on the lower end. They do offer spa services in their Pentagon City mall location, however. read more

Two weeks *after* a cut-n-color, I was sitting front row center at an off-Broadway show in NYC (obvs) and the glamorous seven foot tall drag queen called me out and said she was jealous of my chic hairstyle. I was sent here by the Hilton concierge to get my hair and makeup done for New Year's Eve. I was told it would be a specific price and would take an hour, and neither of these were true. They must be giving the Hilton a kickback or something because the service was NOT worth the $250 I ended up paying. I walked out two and a half hours later looking like a raccoon with a mullet despite bringing in pictures of what I wanted. Now I don't expect to look exactly like the picture, but I also would expect they'd pay more attention to the client and their wants than trash talking with their coworkers. Bottom line: Overpriced. The "$80+" that the Salon Cielo website claims for full foils jumped to $225 when it was time to checkout. I was charged $35 for a protein treatment that I did not ask for, $45 styling that I did not ask for, and $175 for rough, un-toned, brassy highlights that ruined my virgin roots. I came in asking to lighten the balayage that I already had and to tone to a cooler tone. I showed my stylist multiple photos of SUBTLE cool-blonde balayage. I told her specifically not to touch my roots at all- When I left this salon on Saturday I was 100% brassy blonde. Instead of lightening my balayage she bleached the rest of my hair, all the way to the roots, with no toning whatsoever. Management refunded me for the extra $35 treatment and offered to re-do my hair for free- I'd much rather be refunded for the mess they made than add even more questionable color to the mix but that didn't seem to be an option. I came in looking for a quick hair cut to cut off the dead ends. A simple cut with long layers and slight front angles - the same hair cut many different stylists in DC have easily given me. Well, what an incredible disappointment. I believe the woman who cut my hair is named Naja. Lovely to sit in her chair, but do not let this woman near your hair with a pair of scissors. I blew out and straightened my hair the very next day and this is what it looked like. Salon Cielo is by far the best hair-cutting, hair-coloring, feel-good hair salon I've ever experienced. Since my first visit some two years ago, I've never waivered in returning: my hair always looks and feels fantastic and the entire staff is friendly and good natured. Jamie (who is the manager I believe) is wonderful -- a total pro who understands one's hair desires. He also has a great sense of humor -- and a great voice (he can sing anything). The rest of the hair stylists are friendly and easy going -- and real pros. It's a relatively small salon but that's in part what makes it. The music is good (not ear-pounding synthesized sound) and there are times when the laughter is infectious. And every client leaves looking great -- whether in ther 80s or 20s. So pissed off. I asked for a relaxer and trim. Which used to be 135$ It seems that now they feel it's ok to charge $135 for the relaxer. $65 to shampoo, cut and style and another 10$ for I have no idea. Not only that the $135 is for the phyto relaxer. However, my stylist didn't even comb the relaxer through my hair and didn't use the neutralizer that came with the phyto kit. I just now figured out this why my hair looks like crap a week after paying $235-305$ for a specialty relaxer. I am so over this location and all the stylists in it. I will not be taking myself back to get partially relaxed hair with frizzy roots and over processed hair in the front. Also, Phyto relaxer is $65 online so why am I gonna pay a bad stylist 5 times as much to do a bad job. I'm through. Beware! Do not go in there! CHRIS IS THE BEST!!!! I came to Chris with some seriously damaged hair from over-processing and too much flat iron. After my first appointment with him I saw a HUGE improvement. Over the next six appointments my hair became so much more healthy and natural looking. He took me from a bleachy blonde to a more golden blonde which works so much better with my coloring and is so much better for my hair. I loved him so much I sent my fiance to him and Chris does an amazing job with him too. I don't really like going in for haircuts or beauty treatments but with Chris I look forward to it b/c he is such a great person and fun to talk to. I can't recommend him enough!! read more

Jennifer did a great job!! I came in with long hair to get my first Ruby-rose esque pixie cut and it came out perfectly! She was really nice and answered my questions throughout the process, plus the cut came out just as I envisioned it. If you're cutting your hair short for the first time, I recommend you book with Jennifer!!!! The only reason I wouldn't give five stars is that she didn't tell me it would be much more expensive than the base price, but maybe I should have asked. Also their seating is terrible, they just have these four ottoman things that are all connected with no backs so you have to sit right up next to the other people waiting. read more

**2.5 Stars** I went to Salon Cielo because of the great reviews here, and I've been mulling over my review for a few weeks now since getting my haircut. The fact is, I don't like my haircut at all. I went to Jamie, because I liked the idea of someone who would really talk about what would be best for my hair and face shape, etc. He did that -- in fact we spent about 10 minutes talking about it. He was really insistent that I trust him, that I would look stunning, that he knew exactly what I needed. I explained that I did not want to lose any length, wasn't big on layers, and ideally it would be wash n go. Most of all, I didn't want to look too mature. In the end, I decided to trust him. I ended up with a haircut that is much shorter in front, with tons of layers, I must blowdry completely, and that makes me look older. Now, I've been told by honest friends that it flatters my face and makes me look older "in a good way" (I am 27 and maybe pass for 22). But in the end, it's not at all what I wanted, and it's just not MY style. He was very nice, and had some good skills, but just didn't listen enough. The salon itself was very nice: tons of products and hip atmosphere. However, for all the hipness of the atmosphere, the stylists were not that hip themselves. This is probably where my San Francisco snobbiness comes out. I was used to getting my haircut at a salon with lots of female mohawks, tattoos, and the like. I guess my quest for a DC stylist continues. . . after some serious growing out. read more

A friend told me about Salon Cielo, and I was looking for a hair salon in Dupont, so I decided to give it a try. First, their online appointment system: Looked good at first. "How convenient," I thought. Not so much. Awkward and clunky to use. And while my friend told me that the stylist she recommended was available during some after-normal-business hours, nothing came up. So I called the salon directly. Quick to answer, quick to put me on hold. Rushed when they finally got to me, and not willing to book anything during "non-regular" hours until I had been in at least once. Booked an appointment. Arrived ten minutes early, let the front desk know who I was, and perched (uncomfortably) on one of their very few seats (ottomans, really) and waited. I was offered tea (nice!) but as the seat was an ottoman, it was awkward to balance things. (Also, no one offered to take my coat. When I asked, I was waved in the general direction of a closet.) Someone came in while I was in the bathroom, even though I'd used the "lock." Changing room (I needed to take off my blouse) had nowhere to put my clothes. I ended up hanging them in the coat closet next to it, but no one else's clothes were there (just coats)... maybe I missed something. Shampoo: The person doing the shampoo kept skipping most of the back of my head, with every step (getting hair wet, shampoo, rinse, conditioner, etc.) Not relaxing, even with something that I think was supposed to be a head massage. And I was pretty soaked down the back when it was over. Cut/styling: Cut was basically what I asked for (it's not complicated). The blow-dry and end result of styling were not good. Blow-dryer nearly burned me 4 or 5 times. Stylist stopped halfway through to have a long conversation with the front desk folks. Styling was not "natural" as I kept asking for, but more like what some people used to call a "First Lady hairdo." Cost was what you'd expect in DC, which is to say overpriced :), but I was expecting that. My friend was surprised that I'd had such an underwhelming experience, and encouraged me to try again, but there are too many other salons to try this one again. read more

If you are looking for an incredible stylist and a colorist that can compete with God himself, you have to go see Thomas Steinson at Salon Cielo in Dupont. I love my hair. A lot. So, when I moved out here I feared not being able to find a stylist that met my high standards. All of my fears went away the day I met Thomas. I reluctantly gave him free reign with my locks and have never had a single regret since. He turned my dark brown hair into a masterpiece of sunny highlights and a cut to die for. I have never received so many compliments on my hair as I have since I started seeing Thomas. It's been almost a year now and I will never let another stylist touch my hair again. I'm convinced that there is nobody better. Anywhere. I'm not someone who who worries about the space that the hair is cut in rather than the person cutting it. However, the shop is super cute, very close to the metro and everyone I've met there has been great. If you don't want to look fabulous, don't go see him. He will only turn you into a better you. I went to this location around 5:30 on a Friday, and I'm hoping they don't always pack people in like this! The place is small, so I felt like all the stylists were packed on top of each other and there was very little room to sit while your color was setting. I saw people have to get up and move around a lot, which doesn't lend to the relaxing experience that I look for while getting my hair done. My stylist's name was Vasti and at first I was terrified. She wasn't talkative at all and even seemed a bit rude to start out, but she warmed up as we went along. I was getting highlights and she saw at least 2 other women while I was setting, getting shampooed, etc. She tried to talk me out of getting more highlights, but I have really thick hair and didn't want it to look half-assed. I'm definitely glad I made her do more. The color turned out great, but I wasn't wild about the cut. It was barely a trim even though I asked for an inch to be cut. My total came to about $200 with tip. If you're okay with be rushed around a bit, it's a decent spot to go, but I like a little more pampering. read more

You know, some people have complained about the fact that stylists here will work on multiple people at once sometimes but honestly, I haven't found that to be a problem. Plus, it's not hard to get an appointment. I have tried more than a dozen salons in DC, including Evolve, Axis, Luna's Hair Design, Toka, VSL etc. and Salon Cielo is thus far my favorite. As far as expense goes it's mid-range (more than VSL/Luna, less than Evolve/Toka) but it's the only salon I've been to in DC where I really feel like my stylist is listening to me and cares about the outcome. Furthermore, she doesn't just look at pictures I bring in and then start to cut. She makes suggestions, she encourages me to try new things. Seriously she rocks and I've heard other stylists there do too. They serve tea and their hair products smell really good! Of note: Once my shirt got wet while they were drying my hair and they insisted on popping it into their dryer so I wouldn't be wet and cold when I left! read more

Got my hair cut here today but Jaime. It was very easy to get an appointment, I called at 10:45 and got in at 11:30. Jaime was very friendly and took about 5 minutes with me before I got shampooed to consult with me about how to cut my hair. He was very honest about what would look best on me, (my hair was getting a little too long, should blend in my bangs etc.) and really made me feel comfortable. Rose shampooed my hair and while she did a good job and gave a good massage I wish she would have taken a little longer. When I got back to my chair Jaime did a really lovely job cutting my hair, and was very easy to talk to. My only complaint about this salon would be that when I called I was told my haircut would be $55 and when I was checking out they tried to charge me $65. The other thing I didn't like is that I always like to leave with my hair wet (I hate blow outs), and I make a point of saying so when I book my appointment and I still got my hair blown out. I am a very low maintenance person with very high maintenance hair. For me, hair cuts usually only happen when it becomes an absolute must. Much of this is because in most of my experiences with various salons, they act as if they have never worked with curly, voluminous hair and the resulting cut is mediocre. Maggie at Salon Cielo changed the way I feel about hair cuts(not to mention my fantastic highlights). She handled my hair like a true professional, all the while making the experience easy and enjoyable. I trust her judgement completely, and hardly feel the need to give her any guidance. She knows what will look good, and she does it well. I recommend that anyone in the DC area looking for a great hair cut should definitely pay her a visit. read more

Not a great experience. What really annoyed me is that their prices fluctuate depending on which stylist you are 'assigned'. I called to make an appointment, was booked for partial highlights, and was hoping to be on the lower end of the price scale rather than the higher. I asked what the price of the stylist would be (it's NOT crazy to want to know how much a service will be BEFORE you go and pay!!!) and the woman on the phone said, we won't know that until she sees your hair and finishes the service. Sorry what? You can't even give a ballpark of price? It seems that they just want to come up with whatever price they feel like at the moment. Some people are really fiscally conscious/aware, and it's not fair to alienate them at the benefit of your 'stylists' who change the prices they charge everyday. Lost a customer from me. read more

Was in desperate need of a hair cut and wanted to mix it up and try out balayage. I've never gotten my hair colored before so I was a bit nervous about it, and asked some friends for salon suggestions. Two friends have been regulars at Salon Cielo for years so I took their recommendation and I'm so glad I did! I was able to easily book an appointment online for a cut and color with a Hanane who my friend spoke very highly of. When I first met her she was so friendly and eager to hear what I wanted. I showed her some pictures and she asked questions to figure out what I was looking for. She made sure I was happy with the color and cut - she was so excited about the end result it made me even more excited. The cut and color was actually a bit different from what I originally asked for, but I think it actually works for me way better - she knew what would work for my hair and skin tone better than I did ha! I felt like a totally different person when it was all done, and Hanane was so happy about the result as well. After the cut she showed me what products she used but wasn't pushy at all about buying, which I appreciate. All the other staff were friendly and helpful as well. You know when you just move to an area, and you're completely nervous about switching stylists? (Sometimes you still fork out the cash to make the trip back to that other state just to get your hair done?) I was nervous too. I did my research--I was looking for a place that wasn't HairCuttery, but not exactly for steep pockets either. I found this salon and thought I'd give it a try, plus it was right around the block from where I had just moved into. I booked an appointment with whomever they had available, and (now I can say) thank goodness it was Vasti. The highlights that she gives me are impeccable--I look at other people's hair now and am very critical of the sloppy work by other stylists! She takes the time to do it right, from the color to the cut to the blowout. She's willing to take risks, and switches things up a bit each time so I won't get bored with the color or style. That said, she listens too, so if you're one to get the same cut every time, that's okay. If you're looking for a spa atmosphere, this would not be the place. But if you're looking for a solid cut and color that won't leave you broke, it's a good bet. They even got me to switch to their Aveda products, which has made my hair much more healthy. He really loves what he does, and it shows in the quality of the cut. He also referred me to their hair model's club, where he gave me highlights for $20. They look very natural, and I love them. I came to Salon Cielo because of the reviews here, and I am extremely pleased with the quality of my cut and the appearance. My roommate went to Salon Cielo after my positive experience, and she was also very pleased. Augustus did a great job. Just got back from my first cut at Cielo, and I was extremely pleased with the result. The salon is well laid out given the space, and the decor in keeping with what you'd expect. I was offered a cup of organic hot tea as I sat down and discussed what we were going to do. My stylist, the talented Thomas Shelton (there are 2 Thomas S's currently working here) has cut my hair before back when he was at VSL. I always liked his approach and personality. Very friendly, relaxed, and professional. The cut turned out great. Fashionable and fitting, with attention to detail that you don't find in lesser stylists. I feel great. I followed Robert (Christopher) from Bang to here and I am still a fan. He does great work. I love my hair and after using the same person for 19 years, moving to DC was a little scary when I had to find a new stylist but Christopher hasn't let me down. My color is always great (i usually do something different each time I go) and the first time I used him i told him to "do whatever you think looks good" and I was not disappointed. Salon Cielo is smaller than Bang but the staff is a little more friendly and while the cut is a little pricier than Bang, I cant complain because I always leave satisfied. read more

I've been going to Vasti ever since I moved to Dupont. It's hard to find a hair stylist that understands curly, thick hair but she does an amazing job. She'll tell you whether or not she thinks what you want is a good idea. I usually get partial highlights and a cut, and the highlights always end up making me looking like a rockstar. After moving to DC over a year ago, I was in desperate need of a good stylist. A friend recommended Salon Cielo, and I got paired with Jasmine. I have seen her 3 times now and the cuts are always fabulous!!! I also like that I can give Jasmine guidance on how to cut my hair and then she takes the reigns and really does her thing... It always turns out fabulous. I am a bit conservative with color, but my last cut, I went in and asked to get a lighter dye... She put in blonde-ish highlights (I am dark brunette) that looked fabulous and received many compliments. I would highly recommend Jasmine and Salon Cielo. Jasmine is bubbly and fabulous, and does a great job with my hair. Do note, they aren't cheap, but I think a good cut and color are always worth it. read more
