Went for wash, deep condition and trim with Alicia. In hindsight maybe I selected the wrong service. But would hope stylist would have suggested something else beforehand. When I first saw the cut I was a little confused why so short but split ends happen. But buy the time I hit the car I noticed my trim turned into a full fledge shag. I'm talking mullet. It's so uneven that even when curlier that back bang is flowing. I absolutely can get a stingy ponytail In the back. The pics were taken after I came home and blow dried my hair and the next day. Yesterday, I had a great appointment with Paris at Urban Natural. Since I was a little apprehensive to book after reading some reviews, I thought it was appropriate to share my positive experience. I cut around 8 inches of my natural hair, while it was wet by myself last week (crazy, I know LOL). So, on Monday I decided to start looking for a natural hair salon so I could see a professional to even it out in case I botched myself in the back. I looked through Google and Yelp reviews and narrowed my options down to two. Urban Natural had an opening first, so here we are. Service with Paris: I arrived to the shop at 12:50pm for my 1pm appointment. Paris greeted me, directed me to the hand sanitizer and then to a temperature checking device hanging on the wall. I passed the COVID requirements and then we went to her station and discussed what I was in for while she was gently evaluated my hair. Paris truly has hands of an angel. Very gentle and soothing. Paris was honest with the condition of my hair, which I definitely appreciated. I've had stylists tell me all sorts of things just to try to make more money. She let me know that I did a pretty good job with my cut and just a light dusting was needed. She completed the trimming and then it was time to wash. Before we went to the shampoo bowl, she told me about the condition of my hair and scalp and what products she would be using. She let me know that my hair and scalp were both in good condition so no detox or extra strength products needed to be used. We proceeded to the shampoo bowl and she then lets me know that she will be placing a towel on my face (this was mentioned in the questionnaire- more about that later). After the towel is placed she washes my hair twice and then applied conditioner that she kept on my hair for 10 minutes. After I'm done in the shampoo bowl, she directs me back to her station to smell shea butters and finishing oils to choose what I'd like on my hair. This was HARD for me, so many smelled so good. I felt like I was at the nail salon trying to choose a color LOL. I decide and then she starts my hair, first applying my chosen butter and then she did my requested 2 strand twists. I fell asleep halfway through the twisting and woke up when she was almost done. As I mentioned before, her hands are very soothing and gentle. Parting, combing, detangling, everything is done with care. I'm not tender headed at all but it was a relief and it felt marvelous! I got to the shop at 1pm and I was done at 4pm. I was checked out contact free through my phone and I tipped in cash (that is their policy). I will definitely return to Paris for any future appointments. She did a great job and has a good, calm spirit. My hair is multi-textured and she did a pretty good job making the style look nice. I had two compliments within an hour of leaving the salon. The work spoke for itself! :) Booking: So booking the appointment could've been easier or maybe communicated better. On the site, it shows that they are completely booked, for I want to say 45 days, and asks if you'd like to be put on a waiting list. I joined the list, thinking I wouldn't be seen for a while and proceeded to co wash and do my hair. On Tuesday afternoon, I receive an email with a questionnaire about what I was looking to have done, you answer questions and upload photos. I submitted that and then about an hour later I received another email with a COVID questionnaire and my appointment date and time, which was Wednesday afternoon. I had just finished twisting my entire head and was a little frustrated that I did all that for nothing since I had an appointment for the next day. When I arrived Paris looked a little confused and even remarked that my hair already looked done and good LOL. I think if the site showed true availability and stated that questionnaires are required prior to confirming your appointment, rather than they are completely booked, would be a better option. They may be losing business due to the current model, especially for someone who is looking to get their hair done soon. A 45 day waiting list looks discouraging and if I was desperate, I would have continued searching without even filling out the form. Just my opinion as a new customer, it may be working for them. Venue: Clean, organized, and has a home type feel. The chairs are spaced out, I don't know if this was always the case or new due to COVID. They had really good music playing, and no TV was on, which is a plus for me! I would recommend Urban Natural to any other naturals in the area. This holistic approach is apparent at the Silver Spring location. I highly recommend making this a must book if you are looking for a location where you and your hair are treated well. Sydnia is AMAZING at the natural curl definition style and has a shingling technique that not only works for my kid's hair, but I swear is waterproof and can last for weeks!!! Sydnia, like my daughter, is a competitive swimmer with the same softer texture hair and totally understands how to craft curls that last. More important, she understands how to care for 3a, b, c and 4a and b curly hair: Naturally softer and curly hair MUST be worked through/detangled from the ends gently while damp--preferably with a moisture preserving product and usually with a circular flat detangler comb, a wide toothed comb, or a Denman brush). Sydnia not only follows this technique, but has taught us how to further enhance my child's natural curls. A visit to the salon is always a pure treat with Sydnia. The vibe is professional, she is very kind, the music is relaxing, and she really treats me and my daughter with utmost respect. When my daughter leaves a Sydnia session, folks in the community always compliment the hairstyle. My daughter is often stopped and asked "who does your hair." The curls are simply magic, truly magazine cover level. (see the attached picture). The same thing happens after Sydnia maintains my waist length mature locs which are 4b and 4c in texture. She has also helped me start to grow a section of the edges of my hair on one side where I had stress induced mild hair thinning. Sydnia is a star stylist!!! My only hesitation in writing this review is that soon everyone will know it and she will be booked up (or some celebrity will snatch her as a personal hair stylist, LOL!!!) First and foremost, I would like to thank Janel for starting my locs in 2011. My husband ended up starting his locs some years later at UNH as well. We ended up relocating in 2016 and began going to the Silver Spring location, this is where I met LaShawn. LaShawn took very good care of both of our locs until I found out that she was no longer working at UNH. I took a chance with a different loctician and unfortunately had to wait for an hour past my appointment. The time and care of my locs did not match to what I was accustomed to. Thanks LaShawn for taking care of us a few weeks ago, everyone loved our hairstyles This has lead to my final farewell to UNH. A tip of advice, pay attention to the quality of service when you get your hair done from a specialist. And for Ms. Dee, I have always admired you being a successful women of color that ran multiple salons. Although, every time I attempted to carry a conversation, you seemed to always shove me off, role your eyes, or just simply ignore me. I am LIVID with this place. The three photos I posted here tell the entire story (before pic of my hair, pic of what I asked for, and pic of what I walked away with). I have been natural for nearly ten years, but have never had my hair cut. I decided that I wanted to get a cut the "diva cut" to add some style to my wash-and-go. I thought about doing it myself, but decided I'd treat myself to a professional experience ...after all, I'm not trained to cut hair correctly. I found this place on yelp and chose them being that they supposedly specialize in all things natural hair. I made an appointment with Shema, because she was available to take me the next day. I took multiple pictures of the exact cut that I wanted, just to be sure there was zero confusion. I got to the shop on Saturday...it was cute, and there was good music playing. The shampoo and scalp massage was very nice, and so was the woman who did it. She set me under the dryer for a deep condition, and about 15 minutes later Shema took me to rinse it out. Here's where things went wrong. Shema set me in her chair and asked to look at the pictures. I should have known something was wrong when she didn't ask any questions about how I specifically wanted MY hair. She looked at the pictures on my phone from afar, and only once...then she started cutting. I sat in a chair and couldn't see any mirrors, which was a bit strange...but I was relinquishing control to this professional stylist. I could feel that she used a rat-tail comb and stretched out my hair as she cut it, which again I thought was STRANGE to do on natural hair, but I was letting her do her thing. When she was done, she gave me a hand mirror and my hair was GONE. Not just a little too short here or there, which I could have handled...no...it was GONE. I had a short, uneven, odd looking mini-afro. She told me that it looked different because in the photos they had twist-outs and once I did that it would look better. Not only did I know for sure that one of the women in the pics (the one I posted) did a wash-and-go just like me, I knew looking in that mirror I didn't even have enough hair TO twist out anymore. I didn't flip-out because I was in shock... I told myself that I must not be understanding what I was looking at and that I'd get home and twist it up and it would be at least close to what I'd asked for. I paid...and I'm actually mad at myself for paying, but I just felt defeated. I went straight home, cried my eyes out, and decided I'll be wearing wigs while I let my hair grow back. Words cannot describe my anger for what happened in this place. Bottom line, this stylist needs to adjust her moral compass. Clearly this she did not know what she was doing, but wanted my money. Working in a natural salon, she should know how precious our hair is to us...and she took mine away without asking me. You DO NOT experiment on your client's heads, ever...and this place should not employ people who clients cannot trust, so I blame the whole establishment. I thought I was in Natural Hair Care heaven! I came in to get a hair cut on wet hair. A skill most natural hair care stylist seem to lack. I was uber excited they were able to accommodate me. I wanted to do a consult to make sure the stylist understood what I wanted. But due to schedules conflict I couldn't keep that appt. I went in on Friday. I forgot the stylist who did my hair but she was and older short black lady. She wasn't extra friendly and was kind curt. I don't mind since I could really care less about short talk. I requested a shampoo, dc and flat twists so I could do a twist hot for church the next day. The shampoo was nice. The deep condition was nice. The hair cut was amazing. But here is why I'm only giving three stars. After the haircut I explain I want flat twists so I can do a twist out for church the next day. Tell me my natural sisters is this an abnormal request?? She looked at me like I had three heads! She was like are u sure. I was like uh yes! After I insisted on flat twist big chunky 7 rows of them on my head she took me to choose an oil and hair perfume from alikay. I saw some curling gel I wanted to try and she thought I was even weirder for requesting that. Wait. Isn't this what most naturals do to set their curls? She brings me back over to the chair one of the other stylists with a snooty attitude is like "y did u choose that product, u gonna braid her hair" in a very condescending tone my stylist is like "noo it's what my client wants" I did not appreciate the attitude for very simple requests. I wish I came by the next day to show how fly my twist out came. It's as if she didn't believe it would come out good or maybe she thought just doing flat twists was beneath her. It's been 1 month and a day since I started my loc journey and will say I was skeptical. I have very soft curly hair and in the past was told that my hair couldn't be loc'd by multiple salons. In November I had a loc stylist attempt and they decided to try a 2 strand twist method. This did not work for my hair and unraveled within 2 weeks (I didn't wash it, I slept with it tied down and everything!). I was frustrated and thought it was a no go. Luckily, my cousin (thank you Shaz) referred me to the lovely Alicia at Urban Naturals in Silver Spring. At my initial consultation, she was honest with me about it being her first time with my hair texture. She discussed options and wanted to start with the coil method. She discussed plan B if that didn't work. During my appointment, after cleansing my hair with some herbal magic , she did my coils. Once all dry she pinned them up in a style to prevent unraveling (smart). For 2 weeks I kept them up, but due to anticipation, took them down before my scheduled one month appointment. Thank goodness they held up! I was sooooo happy. I just completed my one month baby loc appointment. My journey is still going, but I now am confident this will work! I visited this salon about two years ago when it was located at 1903 Seminary Road in Silver Spring. I was able to make a same-day appointment with Kim for a twist out. I arrived on time, but Kim wasn't aware that we had an appointment. From the grumblings at the check-in desk, I gathered that one of the staff had confirmed my appointment without notifying Kim. I had to wait a few minutes while Kim finished up with a client, but I didn't mind since it gave me the opportunity to peruse the salon's collection of natural hair books and smell their selection of shea butters. I had to choose one of the shea butters for my twist out and I selected the mandisa, which had a sweet aroma of strawberries, lemon, and almond oil. Kim was professional and not chatty. She did a great job of washing my hair and massaging my scalp. Next, she twisted my hair and placed me under the dryer. Finally, she untwisted my hair so that I could wear it out. I loved the end result. My hair looked incredibly moisturized and it smelled amazing. The prices here are reasonable and I got a $10 discount for mentioning the new client special that I saw advertised on their website. Since the discount was only applied to my bill after I mentioned it, it was obvious that this was one of those deals that's out there, but the salon won't offer it to you unless you ask for it. Made an appointment for 5pm, they said that the starting price is $85, got there, she gave me nothing but to shampoo my hair only one time, marely conditioned it, then put me in the hair and told me the price is $$$150.00, my hair is above shoulder length, I asked the individual if she can do $140.00, she said that she only gets a cut from the boss from what she charges. This was one of the worst hair experiences of my life. I have searched for a great loctician in the DC area for over 2 years. When I saw Urban Nature was located in Downtown Silver Spring and there was availability on a Saturday, I jumped on the first appointment. Positives: - no wait time, I was the only customer in the shop Negatives: Honesty didn't ask my name, just walked me back into the washing station. There was no discussion of allergies, what she would be doing to my hair, she just started, splashing water all over my face and clothes. I told her where on my scalp there was usually itching, and she ignored me. She didn't actually touch my scalp until I asked three times, and only in the front, she didn't work the roots, she didn't touch the back of my head. She then threw a towel on my head, and only after multiple objections did she check to make sure all the shampoo was out of my hair. The towel had someone else's hair in it. When styling my hair, her palm rolling technique included constantly flinging my wet hair into my eyes and face. I asked her to stop and she ignored me. I put up with it in the hopes that the result would be a great style, but the twists in my two-strand twist were very loose, and she put the rubber bands on the ends without folding, so that they were uneven with straight locks sticking out. Relocated to the area and needed to find a new loctician. I am so very happy I found Dee and Urban Natural Hair. The shop takes Covid protocols seriously so that is much appreciated. Dee first took the time with a consult about how I wanted my hair and I took her suggestion to achieve the results I wanted. You get to choose your own fragrances for butters/spray and then received one of the best shampoos ever with a warm herbal rinse. I opted for Bantu Knots for a curly look when I take them out (Dee's suggestion). I love them!! I am so excited to have found a home for my hair care needs!! read more

I just had my first appointment with LaShawn Black. I haven't had my hair done professionally since 2008. LaShawn was very punctual and professional and immediately put me at ease. I wanted a tapered cut with shaved sides and LaShawn delivered exactly what I asked for! She is very knowledgeable about hair and scalp health and was very sweet to talk to about my hair concerns. I've had stylists in the past who were very condescending about the state of my hair, but she was very kind yet kept it 100% honest with me which I appreciated. I absolutely love my hair and have received an overwhelmingly positive response to my bold, new 'do! The only reason I am not giving this salon a 5 star review is because I believe the prices are far above the local average. Overall, LaShawn gave me a great cut, a moisturizing [all natural] deep condition, a tingly scalp detox, and a beautiful, edgy style! I don't frequent natural hair salons because I usually do my own hair (trust issues) but I needed a trim badly. After reading all the negative reviews, I still scheduled an appointment because I've learned to take what people say with a grain of salt and that some people don't have realistic request, or that they're just angry. Lol My appointment was with Lashawn for a wash, deep, blow dry and trim. I got exactly what I needed. She was quick and efficient and my hair felt amazing afterwards. I think it's probably from all the shea butter but I didn't mind all the product. What I did find a little weird was that I had 4 flat twists in when I walked in and she sat me in the chair and said you can take your twists out. I don't mind taking my four twists out but usually the stylists would help in my other experiences. Oh well life goes on. As far as the salon, the appearance needs work. it was clean with good music, however it was very old looking. Perhaps some remodeling and central air for better appeal. I had a great time at this salon! Honesty did my hair and she was very professional and washed, set and dried my Locs in under 3 hours. She was very gentle and I drifted in and out of sleep during the process. The salon is small, but very clean and relaxing with soft r&b tunes and yummy scents. Hey have very comfortable shampoo and salon chairs which i loved! I have thick hair so I'm used to sitting in uncomfortable chairs for hours to get my hair done... not the case here! I love the fact that they let you pick what scent of shea butter and oil you want to use in your hair. At first I was nervous about having shea butter used on my Locs because of buildup but their mix literally melts right in! The one thing I don't like is parking, they have 1/2/3 hour parking around (make sure you read the signs) and I had to walk out in the middle of my hair appointment to feed the meter. I wish there were other options available for customers. All in all, if you have Locs you should give this place a try. They are appointment based but they have pretty good hours so it wasn't hard for me to set something up read more

Honesty has done my hair before but she wasn't available in the evening so I scheduled an appt to get a shampoo and chunky twists with Lashawn on Tuesday, Dec. 6th. First of all, she sent a confirmation text the day of asking me to confirm the appt. Clearly I confirmed the appt when I scheduled it the day before! Then she proceeded to cancel my appt an hour before I was scheduled to come due to rainy weather. I took the train all the way from Odenton and had to turn around. Thanks for wasting my time! Do yourself a favor and don't book this salon. *Since my appointment was cancelled at the last minute I needed to find another salon asap! I went to Natural Beauty by Lalia in Silver Spring and she was able to wash/style my hair. I don't know what I would've done without her! Professional salons apologize on Yelp for the client's inconvenience, however Dee responds with excuses. I did not have a good experience here, however, the owner, Dee, has written to me and she is definitely open to feedback and willing to make changes. If you do decide to go to this salon and have a bad experience, I would contact her immediately so that she can rectify the situation. I was a new client and booked my appointment online very easily. I booked a TBN appointment with a consultation and included some information about my hair and how it was my first time wearing it natural. When I arrived at the salon, the receptionist (or at least I assumed she was the receptionist since she was sitting at the front desk) did not even look up from her laptop when I came in. I said hello to her, she said hello back, but didn't even ask me for my appointment time or anything. So I told her that I had an appointment with a stylist at a specified time. She said "okay" and then went right back to her laptop without a "have a seat" or a "she'll be right with you" or anything. So I sit on the sofa and wait. On a positive note, while waiting, I noticed that the salon was quite nicely decorated, neat, and very clean. So, I'm waiting for my stylist to come out and a few minutes later, a woman comes from the back room and asks me "Am I your stylist?". Seriously? So after establishing that she was my stylist, she showed me a book of styles (this was my $15 consultation), I picked one, and we headed to the back shampoo room. I thought we would discuss more about natural hair care (or something for $15) since I was new to the whole thing, but we didn't. After she shampooed my hair, it was clear that it was shedding everywhere. I asked her if she thought I needed a trim, she said yes, but that she didn't have time to do one that day. Really? I thought that was what a TBN appointment was for. So we then head to her chair. I had chosen a twist-out and she suggested that I not let it out until the next day. Fine with me. As she started on my hair, I noticed that one of the other stylists (I don't remember her name) did a beautiful updo with locs. However, as soon as her client left, the stylist started complaining non-stop about yelp reviews and reviews on the company's website. It sounded like she had received one really bad review amongst a host of good ones and the negative review was affecting her overall rating. The rest of the stylists chimed in and started complaining about reviewers here on yelp and tried to identify which clients they were written by. Some of these reviews I did not remember seeing while during research on the salon. (I later saw that they were in the filtered reviews section which I would not have known if they had not been talking about them). In the midst of the complaining my stylist mentioned that if she doesn't feel like staying later than a certain time, then she'll tell a client that she doesn't have time to do a service. I guess she forgot that she told me she didn't have time to do a trim a few minutes ago. After some more complaining, a client of one of the other stylists enters the salon area apologizing to her stylist about being late. Her stylist then rolls her eyes at her and them proceeds to walk to the shampoo room without acknowledging the client. I'm assuming that the stylist was going to do her client's hair anyway, but had an attitude about the client being late. I was so ready to leave after my stylist finished twisting my hair. I asked her how much and she told me she didn't know and that she'd have to check the computer. So when it was all said and done, I paid almost $100 not including tip. I was head over heels in "like" with this place until today. I will NEVER visit this establishment again! I am absolutely LIVID right now! On March 22nd I scheduled an appt for 4/24 at 5:30 pm. I get to the shop to discover I was not on the calendar despite me having 3 email confirmations that my appt had been accepted. I contacted Lauren via text who essentially stated there was nothing she could do. She stated the computer showed the spot as empty and booked an appt in that spot which means I had nothing. AGAIN I have email confirmations showing I made the appt and the appt was accepted. I do not appreciate the "I don't care" attitude I received and will never visit this establishment again! I cannot BELIEVE because of a computer glitch that I am essentially "assed out" and Lauren did not even attempt to accomodate or apologize AT ALL. I don't personally like the Internet only scheduling as I prefer to ask direct questions about the salon, the stylist's experiences, preferences. I have to give it fewer stars because of the price. For a trim, deep conditioning, cornrows with hair added for fullness--I paid $140 not including the cost of the added hair or the tip. I'd like to point out that i patronized Urban Nature salons a few times. When the salon in DC closed, I traveled to MD to keep getting service from this business. I haven't had a problem with any of the stylists and i enjoyed the hair tea they used and the shea butter products. What I didn't enjoy was how Dee treated me and I felt that I was well within my rights to share my experience on this site. When Dee sent me a private message and suggested that I wanted to bad mouth her business - I told her that I had no reason to do that. I also pointed out that she was the only one with the motive to be untruthful. The fact is Dee - you were rude and unprofessional and you treated me like you didn't want or value my business. If you want to re-write that narrative into a sinister plan on my part to be negative towards you, I can't change that but I feel comfortable in the fact that I know and presented what truthfully happened. read more

One of the best natural hair salons (if not the best) in the DMV. That's a big claim, I know, but I really believe it. There are a few things I look for when getting my locs (and before I loc'd, my loose natural hair) done: 1. Professionalism- I need to be treated like a client, to be serviced on time etc. There's nothing worse than dealing with late stylists that cancel on you. This will never happen at Urban Nature. To be fair, every experience is based on the stylist you go to, but it never seemed like the other customers were upset either. My stylist, Eboni, was the epitome of a professional. Always on time (and if there was even a chance she'd be late- I would definitely get a phone call), always cognizant of my time and trying to get me in and out! The other stylists seem to be that way too. I sometimes would overhear customers being told that xyz stylist is running 5 minutes late or whatever. To me, just being TOLD what's going on is a big help. Scheduling is usually done online (or you can call) and they actually stick to the schedule. 5 stars 2. Good products- I don't know about yall, but I really look for salons that care about the products they use to do hair. Beeswax? no thanks. Questionable shampoo? No thanks. At this salon, they use shea butters mixed with oils for moisture, retwisting, general styling. They use an oil-based spray for the finishing spray. They use a mint shampoo, conditioner, and an herbal rinse for locs. All of the products they use can be bought in the store. But if you do your own thing at home, that's fine too. The stuff they use really keeps my hair moisturized and the style looking fresh. 5 stars 3. STYLE- Sometimes you just want a regular retwist but sometimes you want a style that'll turn heads. I love that this place provides both. I would bring in style pictures I found on pinterest and EBoni would remake it perfectly. Sometimes she'd ASK *yes, ask* if she could tweak the style so it'd flatter me better. So you won't get a rogue stylist that just does whatever she wants. I would literally get stopped in the street by people after getting my hair done here. 5 stars 4. Atmosphere (bonus points)- nice to be in a calm setting. The decor is soothing, there's interesting books, r&b pandora stations, light chatter, etc. A really relaxing setting. 5 stars I love this place. I think Eboni moved to their new branch, so maybe she's no longer in Silver Spring. I moved out of DC yet again and literally shed a tear when I thought of finding a new hair salon in my new city. Holy crap am I sexy after leaving here! First of all, the salon is relaxing and truly oasis-like. My dad and I went- he wanted to try comb coils, and I wanted to try something different. They offer wi-fi, music that doesn't call me names and yell at me, and the place is heavenly. I think I have found my natural haircare home! This salon was recommended to me by a friend who showcased her style on Facebook. I made an appointment through their online scheduler (which I LOVE) with Monica for sisterlock styling. I arrived on time to their lovely, sweet smelling space in the heart of Silver Spring. Very pleasant environment. Nice music playing. Not a lot of loud talking over my head and gossiping like you find at a lot of salons. I was greeted when I walked in the door and Monica brought me back shortly after and washed my hair and gave me a rinse with essential oils, which comes free with all loc services. Monica asked me what kind of scents I like and tailored it to that. It felt and smelled divine. I showed her a picture of my up-do and we chatted a bit as she washed my hair. Very pleasant and easy-going. I love the shea butter products they have available which they make themselves. Again, you can choose your scent. I ended up purchasing one to use at home. I was very pleased with how my hair turned out. It wasn't quite as pictured and I could tell this as she was working on it but something told me to let her do her thing. And I'm glad I did. I love it. She was excited when I decided to book with her again the next week for a photo shoot I'll be doing. I was very pleased with the pricing. Much less than other salons. I expect to get my hair done at least once a month or more and hope that my experience just keeps getting better. Very happy with the entire experience. This is my first experience with a natural hair salon and it went pretty well. They are easily accessible by Metro, so that way you won't have to worry about parking. The atmosphere of the salon is calm with soft music playing and it smells good inside! The stylists are not "gossipy" like in other salons and they also sell their own natural haircare products. They have an online reservation service that confirms your appointment and then afterwards you get a "Thank You" Email with your receipt, which is nice. Kim did a great job! Starting with a wash and deep condition, (which I don't get the luxury of at my regular barber) then I got a trim. The only drawback is that they are a little "pricey" for the service I received. When my hair grows out for the winter I may go back for two-strand twists, which would probably be more worth the money. read more

I've been trying unsuccessfully to find a natural hair salon for regular care and low maintenance styles. Yesterday's encounter was another failed attempt. I hate to be an angry reviewer, but this was upsetting in many ways. I arrived on time for my appointment but due to daylight savings time, my stylist was not expecting me for another hour. I waited for approximately 45 minutes before she got to me. Still, she took good care of my hair and was pleasant. I scheduled an appointment for chunky twists. I'll admit I wasn't 100% sure what this meant without an example on their website. I brought in photos and extra hair but was told this couldn't be done because (1) "we don't use extra hair here" and (2) there wasn't enough time based on how I booked the appointment. Fine. So we proceeded with what I guess are medium two-strand twists that look very different from the examples I provided. She did show me the first twist to make sure I was okay with the size. I went along with it until this morning. Product overload! I remember thinking that was a LOT of product being used throughout the process, but I should have spoke up. My hair does not take well to that much shea butter plus that much foam lotion on top of detangling spray. The twists look so matted and sad. I'm not going to be able to wear it twisted out because of all the build up. This was a complete waste of time. My suggestions: - Daylight savings time happens every year. If you know there is a systems glitch, reach out to your clients in person (not the automated system since that clearly doesn't help) in advance to confirm their appointment time. - Consider a welcome/check-in process that makes clients (new ones especially) feel comfortable, not out of place. - Update the website with descriptions and examples of the styles that you offer. If there are no circumstances under which you use added hair, state that. The website currently contradicts what I was told yesterday. - Please do not assume that everyone with natural hair requires an abundance of shea butter and/or other products for styling. - For check out, if you prefer cash (not app payments) for gratuity, state that on your website. I've gone here for deep condition and trim. They really know how to take care of natural hair. They will only treat natural or transitioning hair actually. I go in periodically for their Shea butters of which they have several different mixed and beautifully scented ones. They also allow you to order online. It's better to bring cash, sometimes you will have to wait to make a Shea butter purchase since there are usually only one or two stylists. They only take appointments and those can be a bit hard to get at times. Love this place tho, wish they would hire more stylists. read more

Having been a Naturalista all my life I was delighted to find a DEDICATED Natural Hair Salon in the heart of Silver Spring. Within the span of 6 months I've been to the salon twice and had great experiences each time. The first, to get styled for the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Ball... Since my first experience had such a big event behind it I was a little nervous trying out a new salon. Fortunately, I was highly satisfied with the service and styling I walked out with. My stylist talked to me about what I wanted and even made suggestions to make me feel my most beautiful despite some breakage spots. My second experience was just as stellar... After a mishap with the scheduling system, the owner, Dee, worked with my schedule, which had very tight time constraints. She created a space for me where there had been none before. She had me in and out within an hour and 15 minutes, which was under the two hour time frame I had available!! I never felt rushed and my Bantu Knot came out looking utterly beautiful! She was attentive & knowledgable about her craft AND as an added bonus gave great advice for my hair goals. The compliments I received on my hair that day and the next? Well over a dozen! I don't know what is going on with this place, but your customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I had a stylist I was going to for about a year and a half.....She was awesome, but she left the shop. She cited management as the reason she pushed herself to open her own shop. I wanted to follow her but her new shop was just too far from my house. So I figured I would go to another stylist at the same company. The new stylist was also good, but the week she did my hair she informed me that it would be her last week at the shop, because she could no longer deal with management....hmmmmm.....So I decided to try a third stylist at the shop. She was nice enough, but showed up almost 20 minutes late, both times I booked with her. I stood in the front of the salon and waited for her to arrive. Since I liked the way she did my hair, I decided to go ahead and re-book with her. With my appointment approaching, I noticed I was not getting the normal reminders I would usually get when my appointment was approaching. So I go on the Vagaro system, not only is the stylist who I was planning to go to, not on the roster, my appointment was no longer showing as upcoming, and no one even bothered to call me to let me know there had been a change in staff....etc....etc.... - No problem. I've taken enough low budget customer service. I'm off to a new salon. But if that is how you are going to treat long term customers, maybe there is an issue with management.....Do better Urban Natural. I'm off to the competitor. Hopefully I will have a better experience there. read more

Honesty Shepard unilaterally instituted a mandatory deposit in order to make an appointment, despite this policy being written nowhere on their website or posted anywhere in the shop. After paying the deposit and confirming my appointment days before, Honesty emailed me day-of saying she had a "scheduling conflict" and moved my appointment down two hours without even checking to see if the time would work, which it didn't. Now she is insisting on keeping my deposit because she "didn't cancel." Very unprofessional, and wholly unreasonable. I hope keeping that $50 justifies losing a customer. read more

I was initially reluctant to try her as I had a long time stylist that I love dearly, but moved 45 minutes away has made it nearly impossible to get to appointments without awful traffic. Not happy. I went to this salon recently to get highlights. I have been natural for 4 yrs now yet never been to a natural hair salon to have my hair done. I was excited to try this out and hoped to have a good experience so I could continue to go here for all hair services, unfortunately I was let down. I called ahead to make an appointment and arrived on time and ready to go. When it was time to do my hair I was asked to go to the back and sat in the shampoo chair while discussing my color choice. At which time I was informed that they were very low on color and that they did not have the color I needed. So the stylist stated that they would order more color and have it in by that next Tuesday. So I made my appointment for the next Tuesday with the understanding that they would be fully stocked on color and therefore prepared to do my highlights. So my appointment was set for 4:30, around 4:10 that day I got a phone call stating that the color didn't come in and they didn't know when it would be there so they wouldn't be able to do the highlights that day unless I provided the color myself by going to Whole Foods and buying it there. At which point they would just charge me the application fee and not for the color. Not acceptable. Twice I made my appointment for a simple procedure and both times they did not do their job of being prepared to service me. Being stocked on supplies is a fundamental necessity for a business. The fact that they were unprepared twice is unprofessional.This comes as a surprise to me because on their web site they list a lot of rules that you must follow in order to use their salon which sets the requirement and therefore expectation of professionalism. But what does this mean if they don't hold up their side of the bargain by being professional and prepared too? So, I give two stars because the environment was clean and smelled nice. I schedule an 8am appointment online at the Silver Spring location. I arrived at 750 and no one was there. I called the posted number and got a voicemail. Around 820 I located a number from the website and sent a text requesting to cancel my appointment. With my first experience here the stylist was late but she did call to let me know. I have been wearing my hair natural for the past year now and decided that I wanted to loc my hair for spiritual reasons, in addition to the fact that nicely maintained locs just look awesome! I sheduled my appointment with Monica at the Temple Hills location for this past Saturday. My experience was pretty good. My biggest dilema on that day was trying to find the salon. I live locally but I'm pretty new to the area. I thought the salon was located within the Marlow Heights mall but it's actually located on one of the side streets. I passed the building several times unknowingly because there's no signage and its pretty much situated on a residential street with a side entrance. They should really consider getting a lawn sign or something. Anyway, Monica greeted me at the door full of smiles, along with a very cheerful attitude...I automatically felt comfortable. The lower level of the salon welcomed me with aromatherapy and pretty shades of purple and browns...I was impressed immediately. Monica's station was on the upper level and there too it was simple yet comfortable, warm and earthy. Monica and I made small talk as she proceeded to wash my hair and she also told me about each product she was using....impressive. The wash was good...her hand are very "light," no roughness. She then took me to her station and she asked me how I wanted my locs to look, I showed her picture and she agreed that it would be a good look. Once again she told me about the technique she was using and what i could expect during the days and weeks to come while in my loc journey. Because my edges are pretty thin, I opted to have the first few rows along the front and sides fall frontwards oppose to backwards (a personal decision), she said it was doable and that once my hairline started to strengthen, we coudl always bring the locs backwards. The only thing that I should have insisted on was that my rows be more uniformed and in a pattern...however, Monica did mention that she prefers a more freeform pattern...I'm new to the loc game so I didnt resist...we'll see what results I get overtime. Monica talked to me about the various color options that they offer as well as the full line of other products offered by the salon. Truthfully from the wash to the twist, I enjoyed every product (aroma) that was applied to my hair! I hope to be able to make Monica my long term loctician because I really appreciated her services and welcoming attitude. Final thought: because I did the gel twist and my hair is very soft, she told me not to wash my hair for at least 1 month, because if I did it could disrupt the loc process. Some of the coils in the back are definitely starting to slip, so we'll have to see how long I can hold out before having to return to see her prior to my 1 month appointment. Y'all pray for my locs and that they grow in nicely LOL! No, but really, overall the experience was good and the price was affordable. I would recommend this salon to others... read more

I had been going to this salon to get my hair in twists out, etc. and on one of my visits, I decided to get a color, a patch test was not done to test for an allergic reaction of the color. Due to an allergic reaction from the color, my face swelled up really badly to the point that I had to go to the emergency room. I received a steroid shot along with Benadryl pills to take to reduce the swelling, I also received steroid cream and pills (from my dermatologist) to reduce the breakout on my skin which also resulted from the color. It took about a week for the swelling to go down and for my head and face to go back to it's regular size and I was unable to attend work during that time. The stylish was made aware of what happened to my hair and was sent a picture of the swelling of my face, all she said to me is that next time I should not get a color (not an adequate response), she did not follow up with me to check on the status of my hair or the swelling to my face. My hair broke off pretty badly and turned a greenshish shade, I eventually had to do a big chop (got it done elsewhere) to remove the color and the damage done to my hair. It has been over nine months, and with treatment and regular deep conditioning, my hair is now getting back to it's healthy state, but am now cautious as to getting a color in my hair or which natural hair shop I will go to get my hair done. read more

I'm so glad I found this salon. I started my Loc journey almost a year ago and my 1st loctician relocated out of state. I was looking for a place that specialized in natural haircare, or ORGANIC natural haircare at that. That's when I found Urban Nature and then introduced me to LaShawn. The atmosphere at Urban Nature is relaxing, comfortable and gives off a earthy feel. I love it. LaShawn is an excellent stylist. She takes her time when doing hair and is very talented at her craft. Her attention to detail is impressive. Another great thing about this place are the natural products they use. The different Shea Butters are amazing and they each have their own unique benefits. They also have different oil moisturizers that smell great. LaShawn is very personalable with great conversation and genuine concern for her clients and the condition of their hair. One thing that definitely keeps me coming back is the fact that I always take something valuable with me when i leave the shop-- whether its more knowledge about the upkeep of my locs or a life journey lesson. I know that my hair is always in good hands when I book with her. In fact, I won't let anyone else's salon do my locs. This is home. read more

This review is for Lashawn Black at the Silver Spring location. I had her work with my locs for about a year and a half. Her pricing seemed inconsistent. Due to age of my locs and other concerns, my hair began to thin on the top. There was no clear instruction during that time to be able to care and moisturize my hair properly from the stylist. When asked always appeared to be vague in answers. Soon my hair started thinning at the top and I began to loose my locs. I looked to her for answers. Only answer was a $20.00 topical treatment which she insisted I use twice a day. Because my scalp is very sensitive I am always asking what are in the products given to me. Not to be stealing someone's secrets and reselling as I am not a hairdresser nor am I interested in selling hair care products. I simply want to know if there are any chemicals in it that would further damage my already fragile hair and scalp. Answer received was vague again. Only thing I heard her mention was avocado. I began using it. However, it irritated my scalp so I used it sparingly until I could get answers to understanding what i needed to do and what was causing the thinning. What was interesting was my appointment in December. I was on time, she was late and had a funky attitude when she came in. Once she got there she began to fuss at me about not using the product consistently. She said it worked on others who used it consistently. So I said ok I decided to give it another try. It kept irritating my scalp. When I returned in January, the salon for my appointment, it was dark no lights on as if no one was there. So I did not bother to knock on the door. Typically as a business if you are open you keep the lights on. So I thought. After waiting 15 minutes I texted her. Then all of the sudden she opened the door and said she had been there waiting. I thought this was odd since I usually come there with the lights on. She seemed irritated again at me as if I was supposed to know that she was there. I told her since the lights were off I thought no one was there. smh Then after looking at my hair she stated that the best thing to do was to cut it. Which I had planned to do anyway. However, I did tell her I consistently used her mysterious product. I did not stay for the rest of the appointment because I needed to process the fact that I needed to cut it and that we rescheduled another appointment for that Monday evening. Due to a conflict I had to cancel that appointment. Then we rescheduled for first thing that Wednesday morning. Then at 12 midnight she cancelled due to "illness" I did not see the message until the next morning when I was preparing to go to the salon. I rescheduled again and never received a confirmation. I texted her that I rescheduled. No response. Then the morning of the appointment I decided to call her. She surprisingly picked up the phone and said "Yes I am here." I said well I never got a confirmation for our appointment. She then said yes you can come. I thought this was odd behavior from a professional stylist. I came this time she appeared to be in good spirits and had another client in her chair. She cut my hair in a cute style. Again she stated i should use the formula. I asked her questions about the hair products she was using that day to style my hair so I could understand how to properly care for my new short do since it had been years since my hair was cut that short. She showed me what she was using. I then asked more questions and came a sharp answer: "you don't know how to wear a wash and go style do you?" I said no I am new to this and was seeking to understand how to care for my hair. A few days later I started noticing that my hair was beginning to have bald spots. I decided to go see my dermatologist and get better understanding of what was going on. I texted her again and asked if she could tell me what was in her concoction so I can understand why it was reacting so negatively to my scalp in preparation for the doctor's visit. She did not respond at all. After seeing my dermatologist, speaking to tricologist and my health coach, I decided to create my own remedy as I am an essential oil specialist. In addition, under their care I am using other natural ingredients. No more irritation. I texted her back to let her know I was no longer using her product and I am under the care of some professionals who are assisting me with the scalp. All the sudden she responds by saying oh, I am just seeing these messages and then wishes me well. Moral lesson: Hair professionals should be in the business of being helpful to their clients to get the results they need. Not hiding, avoiding and acting inconsistently when a problem arises. I can't wait to start working with my new stylist who came HIGHLY recommended, who has demonstrated during our first interactions, a level of professionalism and a track record for results. read more
