It felt like a relaxed Sunday with my seven friends, and we were hoping for a little more privacy instead of being right in the middle of the bar area. Every other month or so, I get together with my former coworkers to go out for lunch or dinner at various restaurants around Cedar Rapids. Sally's has been on our rotation for quite a while now and I don't expect it to change anytime soon. Our group has grown considerably over the years and that's never seemed to be an issue. It does fill out quick on weekends, so if you want to bring a group I'd suggest calling ahead. We come almost exclusively for the buffet with maybe one or two folks ordering from the menu. The fried chicken is definitely a favorite, but there's a little something for most people on the buffet. It feels very Midwest and homey to me, like coming together for a big family meal. The layout inside is a little bit of a maze as they keep expanding, though I think it adds to the charm. The staff have always been very welcoming and keep drinks refilled while you're up at the buffet. Sally's is a great, small town staple there in Springville. It may not be anything *special* to write home about, but they'll take good care of you! read more

Tonight was the birthday dinner for me and my friend's husband. We were both born on this day!! And he suggested Sally's, so we went here for our supper! This is a family style restaurant. A place to take the entire family out to dinner where everyone will be able to find something on the menu that they might like. Tonight, being a Friday night, they were offering a buffet which included a salad bar, a couple of soups, corn, green beans and carrots, stuffing, mash potatoes and gravy, tater tots, battered fried shrimp, batter fried cod, and fried chicken for $14.99. It was alright. I was looking for the barbecue ribs that I heard would be in the buffet, but I didn't see any, which was probably a good thing since I wasn't trying to eat meat! Lol! The salad bar was well equipped with all the standard ingredients and everything looked and stayed fresh. It's Friday during Lent, so I was looking to eat fish today, I must say that the fried cod was pretty good. It seemed like they did a great job at keeping everything fresh and plentiful throughout the buffet. I wasn't wowed by anything in particular, but I was impressed at how well they kept up with everything. The pies!! Oh my goodness!! The pies!! We all had a slice of pie and it was incredible! Each of us loved our slice of pie! My coconut crème was to die for!! Forget the birthday cake! Just give me a slice of this pie! There were so many to choose from! So remember that you must save room for pie!! Tonight was extremely crowded. It is obviously a locals hot spot. Although tonight clearly showed a lot of out of towners that came a long way to eat out here tonight. The servers were all quick, friendly, and hospitable. Even though it was packed tonight, we felt well taken care of by our waitress and the hostess. Best kept secret in Eastern Iowa. Fantastic steaks, prime rib, and ribs. Love the Friday and Saturday night buffet. Sunday brunch can't be beat. Great service, and Sally is a "give back to the community" person who is to be commended. read more

I had high hopes for this place. We stopped by here for the first time on a Saturday night after I spotted it on yelp. Their entrees include 1 trip to their salad bar and they also had a dinner buffet on the menu the night we went. I had the prime rib special which took a very long time to arrive. My wife and I had a salad and then she ate off the buffet while I waited. We were both done and ready to go by the time my prime rib arrived. I ended up taking a few delicious bites and getting it to go. The prime rib was delicious. I noticed a hair in one of the salad bar items. The buffet items looked mostly quite good but none of it was outstanding. We were told there were ribs on the buffet but we didn't see any. We won't bother going back. read more

Ordered the breaded cauliflower, it was BAD. Such tiny pieces with zero flavor and the ranch dressing was yucky. Ordered the hot beef with potatoes and gravy. The gravy was that cheap, gelatinous, shiny, flavorless brown gunk, YUCK. The roast beef lacked any seasoning whatsoever. Making gravy isn't that hard and this crap was awful!! Great local eatery! We are in town for a baseball tourney and stopped in after a game for a late lunch. Food was wonderful and service was amazing! Our sweet server, and Sally gave us great suggestions on menu items. We tried the Little Woody, Philly Cheesesteak, Hawaiian Blue Burger, Rundallicious, and French Dip...all very tasty. The homemade chicken noodle and steak and potato soups which were part of the salad bar was wonderful. Don't pass up dessert try one of the slices of pies, or take one to go for later! Tonight I had the buffet including a very fresh salad bar, fried cod, shrimp, and broasted chicken. The service was outstanding and the food delicious and hot. Are you kidding me? How did I not know about this place? What a gem tucked away in Springville! I was looking to get some broasted chicken, and got the buffet. Winner! The broasted chicken was the best! No grease bombs here! Decided to try the fish. A-mazing. Flavorful, lightly breaded. Delicious. Did some sides which were equally great. I was craving broasted chicken and potatoes and there really isn't anywhere decent around the Marion area. We had heard good things about Sally's so we did takeout. When walking in to pick up our meals the place was packed which is always a good sign! My order was ready as soon as I arrived. The chicken was good... however a touch dry and over salty. The broasted potatoes were bland and not very crispy. I prefer wedges and these were small potato halves. My husband had the shrimp which he enjoyed with a side of fries. The fries were cold and had no flavor either. We will give Sally's a second chance, however I will pass on the chicken. read more

Now, my situation may be a little different than your average "let's go out for supper" experience. I was part of a 140 motorcycle benefit ride that made our first stop of the day at Sally's. I know that the ride sponsors had notified them due to it being on the poster that this was the first stop and that food was available. Also, there was a "special" for us. We could chose between several sandwiches and fries for $5.99. The look of the restaurant/bar is clean and not over done in anyway. I could see that there was a salad bar set up and also there was another buffet line that would hold hot foods. This was empty though. So, 140 people are coming, all at the same time and most of them hungry since it is now noon. Those not hungry are probably going to have a beer or so. This could be a real windfall for a small business; quick in and quick out. However, it would seem from many of the bikers viewpoints that Sally's wasn't ready for this type of crowd. Instead of having a bunch of something cooked up and ready to go (or at least enough to get the group started) they had to take our orders and then later search us out to give it to us and then to pay. Better idea would have been a line, pay, order, get and get the hell out of the way. Nope, I stood in line by the waitress station for at least twenty minutes (that's where they told us to go when there was no seats. started with only four people ahead of me) because the waitress would take two orders and then go run around to the tables. Long story short. I got my food in about an hour. Just in time to wolf it down and head out for the next stop. The food was ok, but again I have to wonder about the management and their ability to deal with a larger group. I don't blame the waitstaff, they just do what they are told. read more
