Pulled pork, potato salad & cornbread

Had amazing food and service! Pulled pork sandwich was delicious. Our food was out super fast too.

Stopped by for a late lunch on a Thursday after seeing good Yelp reviews. The location is in an old house and there are several tables both inside and out. Nothing fancy but quaint. No one appeared to be there when we arrived - I eventually called the business's phone number and a woman came running inside from the back yard smoker. I'm not going to fault a small business in a rural area for one person having to do all the jobs. The daily specials, Pulled Pork Sandwich and BBQ Chicken Sandwich were a super deal! I also ordered a beer and some coleslaw. The Hefeweizen was interesting and flavored with some local honey. The coleslaw was alright. The pork sandwich came in chunks (like burnt ends) instead of shredded like most pulled pork I've eaten which made eating it rather messy as the chunks would fall out. The chicken sandwich was prepared the same way. We both LOVED the BBQ sauce!

Great food! Friendly service! Good music! I highly recommend the burnt ends, we couldn't get enough!

I met up with some friends for drinks at Big's BBQ in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. The bartender was very friendly and kind to me when I was explaining my allergies to her. She was so nice that she got the owner on the phone to talk with me about his beer on tap and what the ingredients were. As it turned out, the bartender was the owner's wife. Great service and atmosphere. Seating was good as well. We sat around the bar on stools up high and had a great time tasting beer. Overall, great experience!

Wow. This was great bbq! We ordered from The Local down the street and the staff delivered the food to us! The service was very quick for a Friday night. I went with the pork coleslaw salad bowl with a side of cornbread. My husband went for the bbq burrito with a side of Mac n cheese. We loved the unique menu and had a difficult time choosing what to eat as it all sounded good! I really liked my pork-coleslaw salad; however I was expecting more pork than coleslaw ... ended up being the other way around. The pork was juicy and flavorful topped with the raspberry siracha sauce. The cornbread was my absolute favorite - moist/rich and delicious!!! My husband also liked his burrito - but said there was also more slaw than meat and it was supposed to have Fritos in it, but he did not see/taste any Fritos. Overall, excellent bbq!

What a great find! We were in town for Cornell College homecoming and Alumni reunion and decided to search for some BBQ. The service here is fantastic and so many items on the menu are homemade( root beer, dry rub, sausage) and the food was delicious. We were a large group and all plates were empty at the end! Would highly recommend!

If you find yourself in Mt. Vernon Iowa and you should someday, for it is a quaint small town with ecclect shops and a mellow vibe. Do yourself a favor and stop at Big's for some of the most amazing BBQ you will ever have. After the first bite of the burnt ends I knew this was something special. Tender and flavorful with a tangy sauce that will make you happy. Try the raspberry schira sauce for something totally unique. Big's also Brews their own beer and root beer 9 vareities of beer and a cider. This will definitely be a return to spot and highly recommend.

They offered to allow me to 2 tickets that I won at Benz beer Fest if I booked a group of 8 or more and agreed to plan a tour for me on Friday 8/19 It took weeks to figure out the details as they would only communicate thru FB messager and NEVER answer their phone nor call me back. it also took a minimum 4 days to get a reply. After all that, they messaged me at midnight last night saying they aren't going to provide a bus for our event. 10 days to go and now we have no bus. Now in trying to reach out and express concern, they blocked me. Geesh! Like a "mean girls club" I guess. Really unprofessional, and poor service. I'd think twice (or 3 times) before ever reaching out to them for a booking.

We've done 3 walking food tours prior to this one and were excited to add it to our list. There were many things we loved about this tour; Stanley's enthusiasm, the beautiful day and great walking weather, the folks we chatted with on the tour and *most* of the food. The tour was extremely slow to get going. We were all very hungry; eating small breakfasts and no morning snacks in anticipation of a heavy food afternoon. The tour began promptly at 12:30. We spent a very long time in the Convention Center talking about Frank Lloyd Wright. And then when we left the history part of the tour continued for an hour. The first tasting of any food did not happen until a little after 1:30. First stop was Merchant, a funky restaurant/bar, where we were served a Small quarter of a cuban sandwich and a tiny arugula salad dressed in vinaigrette. The Cubano was very good but the serving we seriously tiny. Then we lingered waaaay too long (in my opinion) at the Merchant sitting at the table even though everyone had been done for a while. After the merchant we made Lots of little stops to look at landmarks around the capital area. And we did a little walk through of the capital building, which was very beautiful, but my tummy was still rumbling!!!! 2:22 was our second stop at Fromagination Cheese Shop. This was an absolutely adorable shop with oodles of cheese as well as other gormete food stuffs like cookies, pastries, honey, balsamic vinegar, mustard, jams and jellies and other gift stuff . 3 small pieces of cheese and 2 crackers. There were also a few samples around the store for tasting but really it was a very small food sampling. Shortly after that around 2:44 we made it to Ian's Pizza for a half-slice of Mac and cheese pizza. Ehhh. Did not like it. They had some really cool other kinds and just an awesome menu in general. Just was not into the Mac and Cheese slice. Ick Next up was a little after 3:00 and we stopped at Himal Chuli which was a Nepalese eatery for a Mango Lassi. I was disappointed that we did not get to go inside the restaurant. We just grabbed-and-go our drinks and walked to our next stop. At around 3:17 we stopped into State Street Brats where we were served half to a third of a brat and A half pint of Spotted Cow beer from New Glarus Brewery. Good tasting. But again, a very small sample Lastly we walked to UW campus to the student union for a vanilla malt. It was good. Wish we had gotten to try the ice cream. I'm sure they have some great flavors there. The union was amazing however, right on the lake. Lucky students. The tour ran over, ending around 3:45. My husband and I left still feeling kind of hungry which has NEVER happened to us after a food tour. So, we had a fun time but left with mixed feelings about the tour. Not sure how much we will recommend this one to ours friends. Would rather send them down to the zerve.com food tours in Chicago.

They roast, blend, and package their coffee in Dubuque, Iowa. Their name derives from a street in Iowa that contained only five houses comprised of the founder's family. In the early 2000s the street was annihilated to make room for highway expansion, but the name lives on in the coffee. For my first review from their brand, I went with a whole bean bag of their Shot Tower Espresso blend. The company describes that blend as having a " smooth yet sharp character with no bitterness. The delicately dark roast level results in a taste and aroma that is full-bodied with a sweet and creamy complexity." Beans for their signature espresso blend are selected from Central America, South America and Indonesia in order for a unique and nuanced flavor profile. I found this particular roast to not only be delicious, but one of my new favorites. I'll be on the lookout for more of their blends at my local grocer.
