We like to sit at the bar in restaurants and chat with people. Last night, we enjoyed chatting with the bartender Carol and her friend who is another local. I started off with a killer dirty martini! Carol knows how to make a good one! She, the cooks and entire staff are so appreciated! They were a lot of fun. Carol was so nice, very attentive and saw to every need of her customers. They offer Happy Hour 3-6:00 which included OYSTERS, raw or chargrilled! So I had both...raw and chargrilled. Terry stuck with the grilled. The raw oysters were amazing! Plumper, meatier, creamy and mild and less briny than East Coast NC and VA oysters. These are the kind of oysters you also want to fry! They were so perfect and so delicious! Next came out the Chargrilled Oysters...drenched and grilled with a melted Parmesan, Garlic, Herb Butter Sauce and served with slices of warm, garlic French bread to sop up the hot butter sauce that pooled at the bottom of the tray. Oh my oh my oh my! Shut the front door OUTSTANDING! Terry and I relished every single bite, I may have been moaning as I kept saying how delicious they were. Perfection on an oyster shell. We shared 2 doz chargrilled plus I had a doz raw with cocktail sauce and freshly grated horseradish. I seriously think I could have had more oysters! Terry also ordered their fried mushrooms, best we ever had! We ate like Kings and Queens. Dragos is on our list to go to but if we don't make it there this time, I'm so happy with NOLA Southern Grill's chargrilled oysters, I'm good, I don't need to go. I would like to compare the chargrilled oysters though, we shall see. But in the meantime....move over Dragos! NOLA Southern Grill has entered the building! The menu has recently been revised and they brought back some of my favorites that had disappeared. My wife is very specific with her sandwich order and they always get it just right. More than just friendly, the staff are always cheerful. The shop is a little small and the tables are close together so it can get crowded at peak times. Sometimes the music is loud, which makes a crowded restaurant that much worse. The restaurant is always clean and brightly lit. It was a bit messy, but I seem to always make a mess when eating falafel sandwiches. I was excited about the baklava, but unfortunately it wasn't very good. Maybe it had been sitting for a while, I don't know, but the flaky pastry had lost some of its flakiness/crispiness and had become a bit chewy instead. One odd thing is that you get your food bagged at the checkout counter, which is separate from the food counter. This doesn't sound bad in theory, but meant I ended up carefully holding 3 hot sandwiches, a small takeout container, and a menu while waiting in line at the checkout counter. The ambience was really nice--it had that energetic sports bar vibe, and there were tons of large-screen TVs everywhere, so no matter where you sit you can catch all the action. The place was also very clean, which I always appreciate. The service was friendly and attentive the whole time, and we didn't have to wait long for anything. For food, I tried the buffalo wings, which were pretty good--good flavor and definitely hit the spot. I also had a burger, and I'd say it was decent... not the best I've ever had, but still enjoyable and satisfying. Prices were reasonable for a sports bar like this--maybe a tad on the high side, but nothing crazy, and the overall experience made it worth it. This hidden gem has a great menu, which includes hearty homestyle favorites, like the incredible hamburger steak. It also has seafood dishes, including sone great shrimp and catfish options. Then there are the po-boys, sandwiches and wraps. There are full meal and smaller salads for grazing. And one of my favorite features is the side dish selections. One can customize one's meal with these to be hearty to healthy or a combination thereof! The finest though is the homestyle baked macaroni and cheese, at least in my humble opinion. Service is friendly and attentive, and the prices are fair. You should try out this little local place for a satisfying experience in Slidell.
