I got there about 5am and he was the only one there. I ordered scrambled eggs with pepper jack cheese, French toast, turkey sausage and tea no sugar or milk. I ate it all!!! I honestly love Sal's for breakfast and lunch. From the turkey sausage, egg and cheese on a roll to a sausage and potato bowl to their steak and cheese on a hero?! Delicious. It's a small hidden spot off the corner of Franklin Ave. There's a small table bench in the corner if you want to sit and eat really quick but it's all take out. The service here is always cool and pretty fast. Everything is prepped to order. And the prices are hard to beat. Four stars for what it is. A cheap neighborhood joint with good food. More of a take-out spot, think of Sal's as get in order, get your food get out. If you're by yourself and it's not after 2:00 PM on a school day you might consider eating in the dark and dingy "dining" area in the back, which after 2:00 PM is inhabited by locals, HS students, and the average hooligan/thug/whatever you prefer to call them. So the food is great, the fried fish is out of this world. you can get it on a roll for $3.00 or on a Hero for $3.75/$4.00. I get it with lettuce & tomato, tartar sauce and hot sauce, and that's all you need. I've seen people getting it on white or wheat bread, I take the roll or hero because it's much more fulling. So check it out and they sell breakfast sandwiches, and burgers, and food, but don't ever think this is the typical dine-in restaurant because you will be disappointed among other things. read more

Sal's is great if you know what to expect. This place is a staple of the neighborhood and Sal and his staff are friendly and genuinely seem to be happy to see their client base of regulars. I've been to Sal's many times and I don't think I've ever not seen Sal himself behind the food prep counter. I have never eaten in at Sal's but the dining room smacks of a fast food joint. The food itself, while served quickly, is made to your order by the grill cook. I have had only very tasty sandwiches and breakfast platters from Sal's. That said, while I have never had a bad-tasting meal from Sal's I wouldn't go there if were looking for health food. If you want freshly-prepared, somewhat greasy fare, this place will blow the doors off any chain fast food joint. That said while they prepare everything in front of your eyes, the ingredients themselves are mostly refrigerator or freezer fare and I'm not too sure that you would want to eat a salad that they make there (if they offer salads at all). The prices are tremendous (another place in which Sal's scores over fast food chains) and more in line with cheap delis than a diner or fast food chain. I just got a cheesesteak on a roll and an order of french fries for a total of $3.75. Where else in New York city can you get that good of a deal? If you want fast, genial service of made-to-order greasy fare, Sal's is the place for you. read more

The best cheap food in Crown Heights. Period. Come here for the breakfast sandwiches - 2 bucks - the homefries - also 2 bucks - or the Philly Cheese steak, Tuna Hoagies, and Fried Chicken. It's classic diner food. If you ever had a shitty atmosphere dingy cheap little diner in your town that you and your friends rolled up to every sunday to lick your hangovers, you will find Sal's home. Don't expect some artisanal shit here. There's no garlic mayo, no pan-roasted palm hearts in apple vinaigrette reduction sauce. Sal's is for people who want to get quick, decent food for cheap. The staff is really nice though, and if you have strange requests, they are more than willing to accomodate. I've even seen people walk up to the counter and ask for a "dollar" of fried chicken, or a "dollar" of mac and cheese. To which the guys took two strips and wrapped them in a paper towel, and cut out a little square and put it in a styrofoam tray. I get the tuna hoagie like every day. For the past five years, I've lived across the street from Sal's Restaurant. And, for those five years, I've had to fight an undying urge to eat there every single morning. There is something simply magical about Sal's egg + cheese breakfast sandwiches. No, it's not the stupid-low prices, nor is it the unbelievable flavors elicited from that $2.50 of perfection. It's the honesty that oozes out of this place so magnificently. After I order, there is not a dull moment until I've finished the last bite of bacon egg and cheese. The community that congregates at Sal's is the greatest cross-section of the neighborhood I've ever witnessed, and this dedication to their customer base is what makes the hole-in-the-wall such a delight to enter day in and day out. A lot of folks are moving in to this neighborhood today who believe that a $11.00 burger from that whack-ass Franklin Park place up the block is the best that they can do. But try one of Sal's bacon cheeseburger deluxes for less than half that price, and you'll realize just how much better things are in the neighborhood. read more

This is a great little hole-in-the-wall place for breakfast (all day) or halal food. When I first entered I was a little confused about who was waiting and who had already ordered, but then discovered that you just walk up to the counter and you'll be asked what your order is. Customers just stand pretty much anywhere, not in any certain line. The guys behind the counter were friendly, funny and efficient, and the food was tasty- exactly what you want after a few too many drinks the night before. I ordered the turkey sausage breakfast sandwich on a bagel, and it was delicious. I always appreciate having turkey sausage as an option, and I noticed that turkey bacon is also an option here. The sandwich was only 2.25, and a huge side of home fries was another 1.50. What a bargain for some tasty breakfast food! My fiance ordered the grits and omelet and very much enjoyed both.
