Decided to try a new spot in Jackson and landed here. Before we even got into the door, we were greeted warmly by the hostess and another staff member who held the door for my mom. Nice! We were seated quickly, as it was not super busy on a Saturday afternoon. Our server came quickly and took our drink orders and filled them quickly. She even handled our change of mind without a pause. Nice! Appetizer of Fried ravioli with Parmesan cheese sprinkled was nice and crunchy. Served with marinara sauce. Mom got the Chicken Parmigiana, layered over fettuccini. The portion was huge and quite crunchy, without being overcooked. The chicken was still tender and not dry but the flavor was just meh. It also was lacking in marinara sauce for the noodles. The star of the show was the 4 Train Remix pizza! It comes with Grade mozerella, grilled chicken, smoked gouda, pickled onions, roasted corn, chipotle bbq sauce and cilantro. I opted to add brisket to the 14" pie. Have mercy! The flavor!! The toppings worked so well together and the brisket just added another level of complexity. I would have preferred a slightly thicker crust since the oils tend to sog our the crust. Stopped one day after work. I usually go to lunch for the pizza and salad lunch special but my schedule was hectic. Given I didn't want a whole pizza, I ordered the turkey lurkey burger with a green salad. I also ordered the happy Hour portabella fries as an appetizer. I could eat a plate of the portabella fries! It's my first time eating them and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long. They were meaty and not fried too hard. The sauce they came with was also very good. My burger was good. I wasn't feeling my salad, which was odd because I love their white balsamic dressing but today it wasn't tasting right to me. My burger was good but I had to ask for ketchup and mustard for it. Service was just ok. My server, while nice and and came around to check on me, I had to keep asking for basic things. I don't complain since it's a local spot and I know finding and keeping good wait staff is hard these days. Pizza was great as always! The Stromboli's are amazing personally had the sausage and pepperoni plenty of food that's like dinner and take home lunch the next day. The service is always amazing in my experience had a great waitress. The kids sat next to the windows to the kitchen and the cook inside shared small pieces of pizza dough with the kids to play in spin and toss. I've lived in the Jackson area for a few years and have had heard nothing but good things about Sal & Mookie's. My husband and I finally had a chance to go today and I was really looking forward to it. When we walked in, there were 4 employees at the hostess stand discussing something over a tablet. No one greeted us but they were busy so we waited a minute. We still weren't greeted. Even a "we'll be right with you" would have been just fine. But that didn't happen and we continued to wait with no acknowledgment whatsoever. We finally just turned around and left. I tried this place a long time ago and decided to come back. I had my daughter and my parents with me and we ordered the pizza with all the meats. The pizza was fine it was the overall service that left me disappointed. Our waiter seemed like he had a few tables and we got lost. We waited for everything, plates, refills etc. I had to flag him down a few times and let him know what we needed but when it was time for the bill he was Johnny on the spot. Shocking discriminatory treatment -- do not support this business. I went in for ice cream well before closing. The employee told me they were "not serving anymore," even though the posted hours showed they were open. Minutes later I witnessed a white couple walk in and get served without issue. That is blatant racial discrimination. On top of that, their online listing claimed they were closed earlier in the day while customers were eating inside. This pattern shows dishonesty and a lack of basic respect. No one should give money to an establishment that treats customers differently based on race. While traveling through the southern states on an overnight stay, we looked for someplace for a turkey burger. Came across Sal & Mookie's and so glad we did. Everything was so good. A special thanks to our server; MK, who was very attentive, patient with us first timers, had the kindest personality and did all she could to make sure we were happy and having the best dining experience possible. The atmosphere was family oriented and casual, laid out with separate dining nooks away from the full bar. The ice cream bar had vibes of an old time ice cream parlor. Now to the food! So good! The turkey burger was big and juicy, seasoned just right as were the sweet potato fries. The coffee malt shake was delicious! We ended up ordering the Empire panini to go for lunch the next day which did not disappoint either. OK, the food was great, but let's give a shout out to the real star of our lunch experience: Wyvunia! There were 10 of us, including several of our friends whose English is limited, necessitating multiple translations. Wyvunia was so kind and understanding and patient with us, truly first-rate customer service, including quite a few soft drink refills for the 6 children/young adults. Everyone raved about the food: Chicken Parmesan, strombolis, cheeseburgers, Chicken Cacciatore, pepperoni pizza, GF build your own pizza. It was all just as ordered and delivered to our booth hot and at the same time so there was no waiting for others to get their food. The New York Style Meaty Lover Pizza was the best pie I ever had! Just the right amount of sauce, the right amount of prosciutto because you know too much prosciutto can be salty. Haha, I'm saying that like I know about cooking, and I don't. But I made that mistake once while making a homemade pizza by putting too much prosciutto. All the pizzas are named after some part of New York. I read the owners flew there on a pizzeria taste mission on how to make the most authentic New York Pizza, Stromboli, and bring that back to Mississippi, and they did a great job locking in the flavors. Ok, more surprise about Sal & Mookies, it's an ice cream parlor too. The parlor takes you back to your childhood; cereal boxes from those magical times like lucky charms sit on top of the shelf. But they didn't leave out the sweet kiddos of today, by adding flavors like cotton candy. I got the waffle cone with one scoop of Rocky Road and one scoop of coffee ice cream. It was so creamy, so chocolatey, and it didn't melt, and I was sitting outside admiring the view considering this is Mississippi. I'm a realtor so the location of anything is top-notch, it's very important. Sal's & Mookie's location is spot on. One step from their door is a perfect design park for children and adults with plenty of seating, and boutiques are lined on both sides of the street. Well ... another disappointing take out encounter with Sal & Mookies. We ordered a Philly Cheesesteak Sub, fried wings with 4 dipping sauces, and a Meatball Sub. The order wasn't ready when I got there. They asked me to select sauces for the wings, although their order acknowledgement specified the sauces we had selected. I waited 5 minutes more for them to pour the sauces into plastic cups, as we requested. My wife said the Cheesesteak Sub was "good". What was supposed to be my Meatball Sub was a Chicken Parmesan Sub, which was OK, but not what I wanted, and not what we ordered. My wife didn't mention her side of French fries, and I didn't open the side of fresh fruit. This continues a nearly unbroken string of incorrectly filled orders, with one notable exception, when they got us a correctly topped pizza. I'm pretty fed up with Sal & Mookies, but my wife loves it, so I guess I'll have to keep going. For takeaway, I could check every item to assure they got the order right, but if they didn't, which they frequently don't, I guess I could make them fix it while the rest of the order gets cold, but that's not an attractive option. Such a cute concept with ice cream and pizza. The decor transfers you back to an old school pizza parlor. I didn't try the pies, but it smelled good. There are a ton of ice cream flavors and this place got points for offering samples. I was having a hard time choosing between cake batter and bride cake so that was a welcome perk. I could have done an ice cream flight with all of the options, but settled on cake batter. A little disappointed that they didn't have a ton of toppings (no brownie bites, cookie dough pieces or Heath), but they had some very fun sundae combinations on the menu.
