Dining here is always relaxing, pleasant ambiance, the food is normally good, and attentive service! On this trip I chose Hibachi Shrimp with Noodles. The food was out quickly, attractively plated. Unfortunately, the food was rather ordinary and not on par with that offered at spots like Rio, Little Ari's, Kimono's, or Kotto's - all places where I have recently dined. Frankly it was not on par with other items I've enjoyed here over the years. And the sliced carrots are so overly sweet, they are nauseating - and not just here but at many hibachi restaurants. Ugh, I am getting progressively more disappointed with the hibachi options in Winston. The positives: They have a drive thru window for takeout and the man working was very nice! Online ordering is fairly simple. The steak was tender and the rice was good. The white sauce was one of the better ones I've had and it wasn't overly sweet. The negatives: The price- $25.68 after tax for filet and shrimp. Filet and shrimp is $25.80 before tax at Arigato and comes with soup, salad, appetizer shrimp and a much larger portion. The shrimp with the order just weren't for me. They came with the tails on and you could tell they just weren't a good quality. Very fishy and chewy, I just didn't love it. I also didn't really like the mixed veggies or sweet carrots. While the steak was tender, it didn't have a lot of flavor and it was missing that little bit of sear on the outside. It was okay, but for that price - $29 after tip - I unfortunately would not order it again. I can get filet and shrimp for under $20 after tip at Little Ari. It's not the absolute best I've ever had, but at this point for taste & value it's my favorite. read more

I tried Sakura for the first time recently and unfortunately, it'll be my last. The food was pretty mid.. not terrible, but definitely not amazing either. The ambiance is decent but could definitely use some improvement. The tables were sticky, which was off putting. The food was fine, but nothing extraordinary or pic worthy... If you're looking for American-style sushi, this might be your spot, but don't expect anything special. The most memorable part of the dinner, however, was the service. The waiter's (didnt catch their name / dont want to embarrass anyone) breath had a pretty strong odor, which was hard to ignore and gave a more lasting impression more than the food itself! My experience at Sakura was terrible. I ordered a chicken hibachi plate and an order of egg rolls online at 12:15. I opted for my order to be ready ASAP. After placing the order, the ordering platform said it wouldn't be ready until 12:50 Having already paid, I ran my errand and then came by to pick up my order. The parking lot was empty except for a lone car pulling out. I walked in, gave my name, and ran to the restroom. The bathroom was old and dingy with a funky smell but clean-ish. I came back out, and my order was ready. Seeing the yum yum sauce on the top, I asked if I could have ginger sauce instead and handed it back. The manager came up during the interaction and didn't greet me but gruffly told me it would be $1.75. I told him I didn't want the yum yum sauce at all, just the ginger sauce. He insisted it would be a charge. I took the sauce back and walked out. The food was disgusting, even with the yum yum sauce. The chicken was dry with a weird smell and taste; the carrots and rice were soggy. The whole plate was poorly seasoned. The egg rolls tasted like a freezer. The egg roll wrapper was stale, and the "duck sauce" was awful. Everything was inedible. I placed the entire order into the trash can and returned to work hungry. read more

The food always seems to lack flavor when I eat at Sakura. Sushi is always is a safe bet, but when I try a noodle dish, ramen, takoyaki or anything else that intrigues me, I always end up disappointed. My most recent visit resulted in them being out of the item I wanted and the restaurant was freezing cold. And I'm a big guy that's never cold. We almost moved outside where it was in the 50's and raining, but felt warmer out there than it did inside. Probably because our clothes were damp and the AC was on full blast. Anyway... Sakura was good! We ordered several rolls to split and my favorite by FAR was Midnight roll and standing second would have to be the Firework roll. The crab rangoon were a little under cooked for me and the filling was VERY cream cheese heavy. The prices are very reasonable for what you get. The sushi was unfortunately not as fresh as I would have liked. The nigiri quality reminded me of something I would get from the Harris Teeter sushi section. Both of my favorite sushi rolls contained tempura shrimp which is really hard to mess up and I will say, they did a great job. Several tables around us ordered hibachi/teriyaki entrees which looked incredible. I would definitely go back to Sakura but I can't tell you it was my favorite sushi in Winston. read more

The food was pretty solid, our waiter was kind, and overall it was clean. It's definitely the kind of atmosphere you want when it's a cold, rainy Sunday, chowing down on comfort food and then go to bed right after. The best part is the entire Twilight soundtrack was playing on the speakers the whole day. Ordered dinner online Friday night, 2 chicken & steak teriyaki combos. We got there at or just past the "time ready" estimate, went inside and said I was there for an online order, gave my name and showed online receipt. Three employees couldn't find it, one even asked if I was at the correct restaurant! I think I know where I ordered from, kind of an insulting ?. They finally found or made my order and brought it with the bill. After tearing the bags open to make sure order was correct, I asked for the 2 extra sauces that were ordered; they brought them out and charged me for them. After making me wait at least 15 minutes while they "found" it and then it was not correct, they couldn't provide the extra sauces at no or reduced charge as an gesture of goodwill? If they had, I'd want to continue to order from there but now, not so much. I'd give 2 stars but the food was really good. read more

I hadn't had hibachi in a while, and Sakura was only a short distance from my hotel. I came on a Tuesday, which happened to be their lunch special: $8.50 (at this time) for a generous portion of chicken hibachi. I also added on an order of saba and squid nigiri. I wish I could rate them on the food, but this is on the service. We arrived, only about 3 tables in the restaurant. We waited about 5 minutes for someone to come ask about drinks. We waited another 10 minutes for them to bring our waters, and when the waitress brought them, she asked if we were ready. We said yes, and she said I will be back. We chose to just leave, because at that point we had no faith in whether we would even get food. I waited tables for 10 years, so I try to always have grace, but I'm sorry, if you can't attend to your customers when there are two waiting tables staff and only 3 other tables, you need to do some training. Having just delivered my son at the hospital, we celebrated over sashimi at Forysth Medical. I had been CRAVING some for the past 9 months that it was such a big deal to me to get my hands on some immediately. My husband originally ordered from Umi for the birth of our first child two years ago and decided to try Sakura this time, which was significantly less expensive. We weren't disappointed. The sashimi tray provided quality cuts of thickly sliced, most delicious fish. I was surprised that I actually felt full when I finished! And compared to other sashimi plates in the area, as I've tried many, Sakura has been the best bang for the buck. I ended up ordering twice before leaving the hospital for our one-night stay! My husband had great things to say about their chicken katsu and sushi as well and I'll take his word for it. Having been in tow for all my postpartum food craving catch-ups, he's had his fill as well. Just an FYI, their dining space is closed due to COVID, but their drive-thru in the back is open for pick-ups. I appreciate that they're working to keep their staff and customers safe in this way, especially since they're dealing with raw food like sashimi that I'd want to stay as clean as possible considering. read more

Sakura is my favorite spot to get sushi from. I've been coming here for as long as I can remember. Their Dine in is currently closed due to Covid, BUT they do offer pick up and DRIVE THRRU!! I ordered three rolls from their lunch special and I have never had sushi fresher than this. It was ready so quickly and my favorite part was picking it up through the drive thru. There were two other tables in the restaurant, yet it took nearly an hour to get entrees. Again, good food, so maybe I could over look it. Unfortunately, I came to Sakura instead of another restaurant down the street in search of the much lauded sushi. I ordered a specialty roll for my table as an appetizer, but it never appeared. Holy hot damn. I am so glad my friend randomly asked me to go get sushi. Turns out, this spot is legit. We sat at the sushi bar and each had custom rolls made. I had an odd request, though. No rice. I wanted mine rolled with cucumber and it was delivered. I have no idea what I ate but I honestly tried to figure out how I could convince someone else to go back with me for dinner. As a nice gesture, the chef also made me a roll that was rolled with salmon. I had never thought about that and now my options of sushi are growing along with my cravings to go back to Sakura. Now that I have been to Sakura quite a few times, I finally get what the bf's obsession was! The steak hibachi is the way to go. Almost every time the steak is melt in your mouth good. Go during lunch and take advantage of the sushi lunch specials. Two rolls for $9.95 and three for $12.95, the rolls are big too, about eight pieces each! My two favorites for lunch are the spicy tuna and Forsyth roll (battered white fish). The service is always fast and very friendly. Yani was voted best server in Winston according to the Smitty Notes survey! Two sushi rolls, steak hibachi, and tip, we are out of there full and spending only around $20. read more

Service and food both proved to be unacceptable. We ordered two appetizers which were served promptly but without plates so member of our party could make their selection. The food was not served at one time. One member of our party waited several minutes for his order. Another, had to send hers back to be reheated. I feel really strongly about Sakura. Sakura has always been by far my favorite sushi restaurant in Winston and is my favorite restaurant in town (and one of my top overall). I will also preface this by saying that I've been to Sakura more than 50 times over a four year period of time and once in the past two years. I've done large functions, birthday celebrations, weekday dinners, weekend group dinners, take out, and work outings here. It's a shame that I didn't start Yelping earlier! This review is way overdue, and I'm glad I ate here yesterday which reminded me of how badly this review needed to be written. For starters, the food is reasonably priced. I've always found their fish to be very fresh and their rolls to be perfectly constructed. I have had a good portion of their apps, rolls, and hot dishes, and I can honestly say that I've never ordered something that I straight up didn't enjoy. My go-to roll is the Wake Forest roll, which I am slightly obsessed with. Their tempura veggies are awesome and I am guilty of ordering multiple rounds of white sauce for their hibachi chicken - I'm not sure what they put in it to make it different, but it is addictive. I always get a seaweed salad when I go, too. You can't go wrong with food here. I brought a coworker with me last time I was in town and he agreed that the sushi is on par with the places we go in NY, and the Wake Forest roll in particular might be even better. In terms of service, Sakura is incredible. I have never run into a chef, host, or server at Sakura who wasn't incredible. If you're a regular, they will get to know your name and your order. I always order sweet chili sauce with my sushi and oftentimes it would come out when my server came to greet me! I think that service like this goes a long way. After a two year hiatus, the chefs still remembered me. The owner of this restaurant is an incredible lady. She is often walking around the restaurant talking to customers. When I use to live in the area and come all of the time, she would always stop by our table to chat. Once, when I came in with strep, she handed me a big to go container of soup. If this doesn't show you that Sakura cares about their customers and treat them like family, I'm not sure what will. When I came back after two years, she remembered what I was doing and even where my parents live. If you are in Winston and don't take advantage of this awesome place, it is your loss (and also, if you are there AND are eating here - I am very jealous). imho, there really isn't anything better in WS. And believe me... I've tried most of them. I've read a couple of the reviews, and I think that it's amusing that someone from the west coast is comparing "decent" sushi to here. If you want to compare, anything from CA is better than here. BUT... we're not in Cali are we? So you take what you can get. We had stopped going to Sakura for a while because the staff in the back was messing up to-go orders, but we went just two weekends ago and it was back up to par. By far, this place has the best teriyaki chicken. I don't know what it is about it, but I absolutely love it. I could do without the sweet carrots, but beggars can't be choosers. Usually, I pick the Forsyth roll and Dragon rolls also as a safe way to test the sushi. If you can't make cooked stuff decently, then forget about the raw stuff. Again, there was a lull period at Sakura, but they're back to what they used to do. The only real complaint I would have is probably against the tempura. The dipping sauce they use is soy sauce, instead of tempura sauce. There is a large difference, even though the people in the back might not understand the difference. Stopped into Sakura for my father's birthday. There was only one other group eating when we arrived. We started with some tempura shrimp. The dipping sauce was good but I kinda wanted some flavor in the actual tempura batter. I got a hibachi plate with chicken and shrimp. It came with a salad or soup. I asked for soup. They brought out a salad. . . oh well. . . I ate the salad. The entree arrived. I didn't really love how it was plated with all the foods sectioned off by themselves. Chicken, shrimp, onions, mushrooms, zucchini, rice, all in separate little areas of the plate. Everything tasted ok. Nothing was great. My Dad got two sushi rolls and seemed to enjoy both of them. The service was good but that might be attributable to the fact that we were basically the only people there. I would return but it might not be my first choice in Winston. read more
