When we go out for food, I enjoy the ambiance, or the feeling of being away from home. The interior here is not very inviting, nor is it pleasing to look at. The service was decent. Another surprise gem close to home that seems to have been around for some time but for some reason, I never heard of it until about 2 weeks ago. Treated my parents and wife to lunch on a Sunday. We made reservations for when they opened at 12:00 pm but they weren't necessary as no one was waiting. The only unfortunate part of our experience was that we went on the one day of the week where they aren't offering the lunch-time specials. Darn it haha. Anyway, we ordered a bunch of stuff. My dad got the sushi deluxe. My mom got the salmon combo, a sweet potato tempura roll, and a single order of hamachi nigiri. My wife got a caterpillar roll and a single order of hamachi nigiri. I got the rainbow roll and single nigiri orders of tai, ikura w/ quail egg, and saba. I also ordered a dragon roll that we each had a couple pieces of. Overall, our experience was excellent. Sakura is not high-end like my favorite sushi restaurant, Yanagi's. It is more akin to Restaurant Kunio in Waikele in terms of price but better in quality. The rolls are smaller in size than traditional rolls. The kind that you can eat a single piece in one bite with no issues. We loved this place for some of the unique offerings and just the quality vs. price. I love that it is closer to our house. I love that the restaurant is wide-open and not cramped. I love the ample parking. Service was also pretty good. Cons: No complimentary pupus. They charge for things as small as hot green tea ($1.50 each). My favorite was hands down the saba nigiri and the dragon roll was a close second. That is one of the best rolls I've had in some time. On the other hand, the ikura nigiri with the quail egg was one of the worst I've ever had, and yet probably the most expensive thing on our tab ($8.50 for 2 pieces). It tasted far from fresh and the quail egg was horrible. If you don't want to do the hibachi you can get seated pretty fast and you can still order from the hibachi menu, just minus the show. Update 10/20/19- came here for dinner again and it did not disappoint! Sushi was very good and fresh tasting. Service was great our waiter really took care of us and was constantly checking on us and refilling drinks. I would say the oyster shooters did have a bit too much sake for my preference but other than that everything was very delicious. I recommend the fried green tea ice cream, it was so good and was the perfect dessert, not too sweet. I've been here at least 4-5 times at this point and have never left disappointed. We went again today and the food is not the issue. It's some of the staff. We arrived at about 2:00pm and they close at 3:00 and re-open in a few hours for dinner. We sat at the hibachi initially and was moved because we only order sides and not meals??? Not sure what that meant but we were okay with the move. Our server was good and super nice. However, there was a very large party near us, possibly 20+ party. There was an older Asian lady just standing at the corner and watching. No smiling or warmth from either, neither our hostess when we first walked in. Just a weird a rushed vibe. Sakura Husband and I visited Sakura several weeks ago with our best friends, sort of a double date. We sat on the regular dining area instead of teppanyaki. If you're going to visit and plan on talking story, I'd recommend doing this so there's no distraction from the teppanyaki chef. Right off the bat, we ordered the Hawaii Boat, the oyster platter with spicy ponzu sauce, mob lobster roll, and beef tataki. First that arrived was the oyster platter. Be very meticulous on this one. It was our fault. The description clearly stated that it's spicy. I tried it first and it was extremely spicy. One of our friend who has a low tolerance on spicy foods quickly retreated. Husband couldn't handle either. I guess we got too excited because it was oysters and didn't notice the description. The beef tataki and the mob lobster roll arrived. No regrets. Husband paired it asahi and he enjoyed it. I had a lava flow. The Hawaii Boat was fantastic. It's literally served in giant wooden boat. This will take up most of your table space so I suggest planning your attack. Request your server to bring the boat first if your gonna order more. Pace yourself and try a few of everything. The boat had steak, shrimp tempura, onion rings, assorted sashimi, assorted rolls, chicken katsu. They are all tasty and did not disappoint. But here's my only suggestion on this boat, there are still some spaces in between the food. Perhaps I'm just being critical about it, but it's an improvement if they add more food. That boat alone is about $100. They could put a little more garnish, perhaps some lettuce or provide an option for customers to add a little more of one or two entrees on the boat. The price is really for the presentation. We ordered a sizzling chicken lobster platter towards the end cause husband and his best friend are still drinking beer. Not a fan. This felt a little lacking. One the broccoli piece was cold, not sure if it was previously frozen. I don't find anything wrong about it, I just felt it was strange that it was cold while in a sizzling platter. All in all, I'll surely come back here. We had a really great time. I would say that I am happy to have this restaurant closer to home and with not as big of a wait as a similar down the street in waikele. My last visit was a dinner for 3 on a Thursday night around 7pm. Lots of parking and we were seated right away. I also like that this place is very casual but is also good for birthdays and celebrations. Me and my friends really wanted to try one of the boats! Originally we were going to get the Mililani boat but asked if they could make one of the rolls not spicy since our friend can't do spice AT ALL. They told us no that's it's already pre mixed. We decided on the Hawaiian boat instead since it had a mixture of fried foods and sushi. The Hawaiian boat comes with 4 miso, vegetable and shrimp tempura, soft shell crab tempura, chicken katsu, teriyaki steak, 2 different sushi rolls, and a 10pc sashimi for $95.95. Since there was only 3 of us the waiter only brought out 3 miso soup even though it came with 4. We had to ask him if we could get the 4th one. He said oh yeah he was going to bring it later, so we said yeah we will take it to go. I think he should've asked what we would like to do with the 4th. No biggie. Our table was only set up for 2 so we also had to ask for another set of napkins and chopsticks. When our boat arrived, not sure if people normally just eat straight from the boat but he also didn't bring us any plates. We waited a little trying to get his attention but I ended up just grabbing some plates I saw in a stack at the sushi bar. The boat: I think I was a little underwhelmed with the food portion. Don't get me wrong, the sushi was definitely on point. Very very fresh! I don't think I cared much for the chicken katsu. It was more on the thin side and dry. I also wish it would come with a bowl of rice. Another restaurant has a similar boat for $50 more but the portions are much bigger with same quality. Stopped in to this location for some bentos. I was not disappointed. I chose the dinner bento box 1 and 2. The first bento box had teriyaki chicken with fried oysters and some spicy ahi sushi. The second bento box was shrimp tempura with assorted sushi and sashimi. Both bentos comes with miso soup and veggie salad. I would definitely come back again. Took my 11 year old son and his 5 friends (all 11 and under) here to eat for his birthday. We were having a great time as we did Hibachi style and our chef was great. Unfortunately, the table next to us had a chef who decided it was appropriate to play highly sexualized and inappropriate music for his group. While we ate in the restaurant the chef played five straight songs that all included multiple swear words and extremely graphic and sexual content. It turned what had been a great experience into a situation that made me uncomfortable and very upset. I had this sushi craving. We were in Mililani, so we didn't want to wait and drive all the way back to Kapolei just to get dinner. So as any logical person would do, I yelped it. This place was a few miles away. We didn't have a reservation, but we took a chance. To our surprise, they were able to sit our party of 7 immediately. Things I LOVE: - There is such a variety of dishes to choose from! There is teppanyaki, bento choices, sushi, ramen and a LOT of appetizers. -It is safe to say there is something for everyone. -I craved sushi. So I got sushi! They had so much to choose from. Everything tasted delish, and my sushi rolls came out quick. - Customer service was pretty ok too! We could see the Teppanyaki chefs do their thing and it looked like the people enjoyed their entertainment while they watched their meals cook. Things that needed improvement: - My son's sushi rolls were the LAST to come. He waited for 45 minutes for a sushi roll, and I had mine in 10 minutes. That is a LOT of time in between. the noodles, bentos and hot plated dishes all came out before his sushi rolls. Need to get the order process down. Someone should not be waiting close to an hour while the hot dishes are out. - It took a while for us to get refills on water and also to get our server to come back to give us our check. The wait time outweighed the eating time :/ Overall, we did enjoy the food. I love the variety and the servers were really great when they were around. the wait time for food needs improvement. is there more people wanting sushi than hot dishes? Maybe it's time to hire extra people. There has got to be a way to improve the efficiency of orders. This place just needs a little work and it would be awesome.
