Had the AYCE weekday lunch. Great price for a wide variety of yummy dishes, both non-veg and vegetarian. Aside from main entrees, they have chaat dishes and at least 4 types of desserts. Especially liked the chicken curry. Best I've had from Indian buffet. I liked that the mild curry was not overwhelming the other spices. Also had slight sweet taste. Chicken was dark meat. Butter chicken was good too but not as good as the curry. Slightly spicy and more on the tomato side and less cream flavor. Not as spicy as they used to make it. Tandoori chicken was not dry at all. Had some charred spots which added to the flavor. The chaats (appetizer/snack type food) were also pretty good. The Samosa Chaat was the best. Samosas were wrapper filled with curry flavored coarsely mashed potatoes then deep fried. Then topped with onions, yogurt sauce, crispy noodles and chickpeas. Even better drizzled with tamarind chutney. The Papdi Chaat had cubed potatoes topped with yogurt sauce, spices, and chickpeas. Sweet and spicy. First time trying the avocado Jhalmuri which was also good. It's a healthier version of the Papdi Chaat with avocado layer instead of potatoes. They had the regular basmati rice and also tomato rice. They also serve naan which were fresh, hot, slightly crispy on the outside and brushed with oil or maybe ghee. For dessert, loved the Kheer (like rice pudding but thinner consistency). Milky flavor. Gulab jamun (sponge cake balls soaked in syrup) just had enough cardamom to complement the sugar syrup. The Halwa had lychee flavor and bits of lychee. The Halwa itself was good, buttery and not too sweet. But I prefer it plain over lychee flavor. The Jalebi was slightly crispy outside and soft as you sink your teeth into it. Sweetest of the desserts. And to complete the meal, was the hot masala chai tea. You can still taste the tea and milk along with the mixture of spices. Didn't have the chance to try the other dishes. The staff were friendly and attentive. Elegantly decorated dining room. Relaxed atmosphere. Consistently great experience every time. read more

Would come back for their lunch buffet if I want indian food. $18pp Mon-Thur, $20pp else. Left so full and fat my vision is hazy. Came on Saturday, many people so food was hot and fresh, but not too busy around the food area. Northern style rich and creamy (pakora, samosa, butter chicken etc), vs Mantra Indian close by is more dishes popular in the south (basmati, pani puri, roganjosh). Good mix of vegetarian and meat dishes, a tad too salty and rich for my taste but still good. I liked veg curry (creamy and sweet with saag, peas, more), lentil makhani, egg curry, and paneer pashawari. Naan was weak, they had another bread i liked better that reminded me of Vietnamese banh tieu that went well with curries. Had an unexpected salad of ripe mango, black olives, bell peppers, and spring mix. I have to steal that combo i really liked it. Had free weak chai as well, don't know if they sold other drinks. Have been coming here for as long as I can remember. The buffet during lunch is so good with lots of options, both vegetarian and non-veg. Dimly lit with a nice ambiance inside. Buffet is open for lunch and dinner has only menu ordering. The recent time I came here was for lunch for Father's Day. Definitely make a reservation if you plan to come here on a weekend for lunch. Even with reservation there's sometime I wait. I wish there was a waiting area /or even buzzer or text system as it's super crowded and you have to wait inside so you can hear when they call your name. Also if you come for lunch don't come too late as items like the pain puri will have run out. For the buffet there's lots of options for appetizers, entrees and desserts. *tl;dr* = Beware if you are vegetarian! Haven't been to Sakoon in a while, came here for lunch on Thursday and was delighted to see that they had buffet style lunches during the weekdays, and it was a few bucks less on Mon thru Thursdays. Over all the offerings were plenty a delicious, although I think they added msg (I was super thirsty all afternoon). It was going well until one of my coworkers cut into what she thought was paneer, and it was actually chicken! Not a big deal for her, as she was not a vegetarian. However, it was a big deal for our other coworker, who was vegetarian! We believe one of their workers refilled the paneer dishes with chicken by mistake. Which would have been fine if the staff correctly handled this situation, which they DID NOT. Another patron sitting nearby told us he already reported finding chicken in the paneer dish, and the staff fished it out instead of replacing the entire serving dish. The manager came by to speak with us and he was quite rude, he told my vegetarian coworker to, "calm down", when she was trying to explain how serious this situation could be. read more

I dined here for the first time, I enjoyed their weekend lunch buffet. It was priced at $18.99 and their lunch buffet is priced at $17.99. Excellent food at a great price. I already forgot the names of the items I loved but there were plenty of standout dishes and I will make sure to come back soon. The servers were attentive and they were quick to refill my drink. I got here at 1:30pm on a Saturday and there were lots of people but still a few tables open but it may be a good idea to make a reservation just in case. read more

We've always frequented the fremont location which is great- see my separate review. This time we were in the mtv area and decided to try this location. Overall started out great. Place was busy and food seemed fresh and constantly refilled when running low. Lots of options including those who are vegetarian. Fresh naan brought to your table. Chai included. Drinks are separately ordered which is a little different as the Fremont location typically has a lassi option included in the lunch buffet price. However midway through things took a very bad turn. My sister was eating the goat curry and found a plastic piece of paper in it. Upon further inspection- it said keep out of reach of children!! We suspected this was from one of those water desiccant packages placed in packages to absorb moisture. This was very disgusting and concerning. We brought this to the attention to one of the staff - he said he would notify the manger. He came back a few minutes later simply saying that the chef does not know how it got into the goat. Granted we all lost our appetite. While we didn't expect the entire meal to be comped, I thought there would at least be some discount given the situation. Nope- full price. I understand mistakes happen, but this was quite a disconcerting one that ruined the entire meal for all of us midway. Started with the lamb seekh kebabs, which arrived impressively... cold. Points for ambition. They did redo them (20 minutes later) and the second round was actually solid flavor-wise, but the outer ~¼ inch was noticeably dried out. Also: whole elaichi pods in the kebab. Yes, it's "traditional." It's also a fun little surprise when you're trying to enjoy meat and suddenly bite into perfume. Please don't. Butter chicken was mid, tastes like it's leaning hard on the gravy to do the heavy lifting. Probably Deep. Lotus seed dish was the one I was most excited for, and it somehow managed to be bland through the sauce. The seeds themselves weren't marinated, so once you get past the gravy it's just... vibes. Bombay fish: mild flavor, questionable fish quality, and that slightly rubbery texture that makes you wonder how long it's been thinking about its life choices. Naan was good, though it also gave "reheated not fresh" energy. Overall: another textbook Indian menu the size of a novella, with results that scream "we do everything" instead of "we do anything exceptionally." Disappointing for Castro Street. 6/10. read more

We celebrated my niece's graduation party here and had a private room upstairs for 23 people. The restaurant is on Castro Street which was closed to cars so the place was so vibrant with people walking around. They served a lot of filling appetizers, Chicken Tandoori, so tender and flavorful, Samosas, my fave, not too spicy. Paneer and Kababs. Just eating all these appetizers felt like dinner itself. The main courses served were Lamb Curry, yum! Dahl, Chicken Curry, Koftas, Rice, Naan, etc. So much food, couldn't take another bite! For dessert, they served a yellow Rasmalai which was perfect. The waiters were all quick delivering all the dishes and made several trips attending to everyone's needs. Excellent service. The restaurant was huge, going to the restroom felt like almost a 10 minute walk! read more

I've been a regular customer here for years, probably stared going in 2016. Took someone here who has never really been to a great Indian restaurant, and unfortunately was very disappointed. Sunday night, things were slow but the service was much slower than you'd expect. Had to flag down our waiter twice to take an order and give us our bill despite him kinda just wandering around. Food was excellent as usual, but I received some of the worst tandoori chicken I've ever had. Chicken was totally enemeic, look like it had been steamed. Seemea as though theyve changed their recipe, I know traditionally it doesn't have that bright pink color and thats made artificially so that's fine. I also ordered a whole chicken and just got leg pieces. I assume this was either an error or a cost cutting measure serving leg quarters instead of WOGs or maybe it was a Sunday night and supplies were low, who knows. Either way very disappointed as that was my favorite dish there. Still might come back again but will order hesitantly. Update: took my leftovers home, just steamed off some fresh rice and broiled the chicken, came looking great, hit it with some fresh lemon juice and it was pretty close to good as usual, guy working the tandoor last night must've been having an off night. Sakoon means "Peace, tranquility" and this place is just that ! Just came back from the buffet, we try to go almost every weekend ! Excellent food as always, we are big fans of Sakoon MV. The owner takes pride in each and every dish they cook here, he personally supervises and cooks the tandoor dishes for the buffet. The staff is stellar, friendly and kind. Raymond, Dilpreet and Valent are not just amazing hosts but also genuinely nice people, I feel like I am back in India being looked after by friends when we come to dine here. We are *forever fans* of Sakoon MV, this is the best place for non-oily, tasty, fine dining Indian cuisine (North to south, east to west) if you have a craving for Indian food in the bay area, no other places match Sakoon for the quality of food and the delicious flavors. Their buffets are a bargain for the spread that is offered, there are at least 20 dishes for everyone (veg, non veg, GF etc) including 3 desserts , chutneys, fruits,salads, pani puri, chola puri, dahi bhalla, dahi samosa etc etc etc at their buffet. There is even Hakka noodles and manchurian at their buffet ! Tanduri Chicken, Seekh kabab, fish tikka are almost always served on weekend buffets !! Mutton curry, biryani is also included !! Why go to other indian places for subpar food? There is no reason to visit any other Indian food joint in the bayarea considering what all is offered at their buffets, there is always something for everyone due to the extremely vast spread. The place is also always super clean, with white table cloth experience and you also get great attention from the staff. We have even catered from them and the food was a super-hit with our friends, their packages are very generous with very reasonable pricing, ask for the catering packages for your next meal ! They refuse to honor the gift cards they sold. I spoke to the owner (Mr. Balkar), who was very rude. I told him that California law ensures there's no expiry date for gift cards. He asked to complain to who ever is willing to listen. It's not the money part, but this guy's arrogance tells a different story about the values the restaurant practices. I filed a complaint with California attorney general's office. Hope these kind of folks don't get rewarded for this type of behavior. read more

Haven't written a review in a while, but this one I couldn't ignore. Don't let the bad reviews in the past weeks deter you - THIS PLACE IS GREAT! Two Data Points: 1) Great food! I ate the meat dishes (lamb, chicken) and the sauces/curry are fantastic! Very subtle hints of butter and coconut. The sauce is relatively mild, but assume if you wanted more bite, they can do it. The portions are generous for Indian cuisine so count on 1 entree per person. 2) Great value! Based on our current inflation trends, I was expecting a huge bill (I mean I just paid $15 for an In-and-Out meal) and was pleasantly surprised when I saw my payout. With entrees, and some carbs expect to pay around $25 per person (that's without alcohol)! I'm hoping they aren't sourcing their materials from the Heard and McDonald Islands, but even if they had to increase prices a bit, this will be my go to Indian restaurant in the Silicon Valley. read more

Went to Castro Street last week in downtown Mountain View area and landed up at Sakoon after smelling the yummy Indian flavors which we could not resist. This restaurant is quite big and thankfully we were seated. We had a group of 6 and service was fast, helpful and easy. We ended up ordering: * tandoori chicken boti - this was delicious and the marinade was absolutely on point. We dug into this and got a full chicken and every one on the table enjoyed it * chicken tikka masala - this was also yummy with lots of chicken but the sauce was a little sweeter than my liking. Went well with the naan though * lamb vindaloo - this was spicy!!! But I enjoyed it and the flavor of the curry * sevara kofta - I'm not sure what was in this but it was very yummy. The kofta was soft and flavorful and the curry was creamy and yummy. Would order this again Overall, food was good and portions were big. Ordered Paneer Butter Masala, Chicken Butter Masal, Roomali Roti and Garlic Naan. Both the gravies were too sweet(too much sugar added). Oil was floating on top of gravy. So, neither tasty, nor healthy Roomali Roti was $8 but it was more of a thick Maida roti rather than actual Roomali Roti which is thin and soft. I am not sure why restaurants here cant offer good food as we get in India without depending on sugar and cream. read more

Castro street in MV has a vibe of its own :) its always fun going there and i love how they have blocked the road in front and now there is more space for pedestrians outside. Finding parking on weekends or lunch hour might be slightly rough so always reserve 10 mins for finding a spot and walking over to the place you have a reservation for. We were a party of 10 and i am glad we made a reservation the day before. The restaurant opens promptly at 11.30 am and weekday lunch buffet is priced at $18 + tax. It does start getting full by 12.30 so plan your visit accordingly if you dont have a reservation. There was a wide variety of vegeterian options and naan/ bread basket is included in buffet and comes hot directly to your table. Drinks are separate and not part of the buffet. Good drink options were: chai, mango lassi, mojito. There was tons of options for all: - aloo channa chaat - 3/5 it was colder than i expected but had a tangy taste which was good - hara bhara kebab - 5/5 yummy minced veggies into bite sized patties which paired perfectly with the green sauce - veg pakora 5/5 delicious gram flour fried balls - mini samosa - fruits platter - chopped onion cucumber lemon green chilli 5/5 - green dipping sauce - 5/5 - kadi pakora curry 5/5 yummy and wholesome and it paired well with plain white rice - veg biryani - tandoori chicken 5/5 no color, piping hot and perfectly spiced and cooked. Loved it!! - dal makhani 5/5 buttery and perfectly simmered - butter chicken 5/5 their speciality and loved the velvety curry - paneer butter masala - sauce looked same as butter chicken so im sure this must have been good too - malai chicken tikka - 2/5 - too greasy and medium rare cooked. Skip it! - soya bean in gravy - fish pakora 5/5 fried fish which was delectable - red meat curry - mango mojito 5/5 refreshing and not too crazy sweet - vermicelli kheer - 3/5 too sweet for my taste and i wish it had more nuts - gajjar carrot halwa 0/5 skip it. Sakoon is a huge, festively-decorated Indian restaurant that's great for large groups. We started with a bunch of different appetizers including the Avocado Jhalmuri (a layered cylinder of mashed potato, puffed rice, avocado, onion, tomato, and sev); mini samosas stuffed with potatoes and peas; Panch Poran Paneer Tikka (grilled cottage cheese slices coated with a spicy chili powder); and Murgh Tikka (juicy, yogurt-marinaded boneless dark meat chicken). All of the appetizers were beautifully presented and delicious, and I especially liked the Paneer and Murgh Tikka paired with mint and cilantro chutney. Next came the mains, and I tried the Butter Chicken (chicken tikka in a creamy tomato sauce); the Paneer Peshawari (paneer, onions, and bell peppers in a creamy mild sauce); and the Bhuna Gosht (tender chunks of lamb in a dark onion gravy). But my favorite entree of all was the Sham Savera Kofta, or spinach dumplings filled with cheese and dry fruits, served in a creamy, sweet, and acidic tomato sauce. The earthy spinach kofta paired nicely with the creamy tomato sauce, which was perfectly spiced and balanced in flavor. All of the curries went nicely with the sides of soft, chewy naan and the layered lachha paratha, hot and fresh from the tandoor oven. The side of raita (spiced yogurt) helped to cool down the spices, and we also had a refreshing (though not very Indian) salad of dressed greens, mango, bell peppers, and olives. This review is mainly based on Mothers Day Buffet. Love their buffets. We visited them on Mothers day as our other reservation fell through. We were early at 11.30 and hence got seats outside. It was very crowded and only people with reservations were allowed indoor seating. Wait : we got seats immediately as we reached before the lunch rush but we could see people complaining about not being seated inspite of reservations. I think they overbooked thsmselves. Food : overall 9/10 We love their buffet and hence visit often. Food variety : 10/10 Good mix of veg and non veg dishes. Location : 9/10. Love the putdoor seating. Its got quite the vibe. Very average westernized Indian food. Ordered several items and was not impressed. Even basics like jeera rice and raita were not good. One dish we enjoyed was their Phool Makhana mix vegetarian dish. Rumali roti was not rumali roti they served some semi lachcha paratha. We were 4 in the group and did not bother to pack leftovers to take home. Also upon reaching home we realized they did not even serve a drink I had ordered. And we had not cared to check whether or not they charged us for it. Won't be going back mainly due to the bland, westernized flavors with no kick, average taste. I think these guys are not using proper discretion to charge customers their gratuity. The other day we were 7 in a group but we had buffet lunch. Surprisingly, even for a buffet lunch, they slapped 15% gratuity. 15% can amount a fair number of dollars. We were the ones who served ourselves, obviously, being a buffet. Even if you think that they can charge gratuity if the group size is large (7 is not large by any imagination), still it was not dinner where we are served our dishes. It was lunch buffet. So, where is the rationale for charging gratuity?. Even for a normal dinner, I have always questioned this practice of charging gratuity because, what if we just broke the group up into 2 and sat on 2 separate tables. It is the same service and same food, right? I think this gratuity forced on customers is not a reasonable practice in itself. If a customer is happy with the service, ambience, etc. he/she will give a reasonable tip on his/her own. But of course, in this case, they can leave a distaste by forcing a gratuity even for buffet lunch. read more
