My cousin had heard good things about the curry/chili crab at Saigon Star from another cousin, so we made a reservation for our last meal of 2025. Since we arrived early, there weren't many other customers, and our food came out fairly quickly after ordering. Unfortunately, they weren't offering the SHAKEN BEEF (one of their specialty dishes), so we opted for a couple other appetizers instead. LEMONGRASS GRILLED PORK NECK - 20.95 This was probably my favorite dish of the night. The pork neck was incredibly tender, with just enough fat to keep each bite juicy. The flavors were bright and earthy with a subtle sweetness, making it very well balanced overall. It came with a small portion of vermicelli noodles, which my dad enjoyed and wished there was more of. WOK-TOSSED CLAMS - 21.95 I only had two clams, but they were quite small -- two chews and they were gone. There were noticeably more vegetables than clams in the dish. While it was very saucy and had plenty of wok hay flavor, it's not something I'd necessarily recommend since it wasn't remarkable. SAIGON STAR HOUSE SPECIAL PHO - 18.99 The pho broth was incredibly rich and flavorful, with a generous amount and variety of meats (rare beef, beef brisket, beef tripe, beef ball, and Hainan chicken). We usually leave more than half the broth behind at most pho restaurants since it's often mediocre, but this time we drank most of it. The noodles were perfect -- not too soft and not starchy. This is an easy recommendation. RARE BEEF AND BEEF BALL PHO - 18.99 With less meat variety, the broth wasn't quite as flavorful as the house special. That said, it was still enjoyable, and we finished everything, broth included. Still, I'd recommend the House Special Pho over this one. PINEAPPLE FRIED RICE - 23.95 The shrimp was cooked perfectly (soft and plump) but it didn't absorb much of the fried rice's flavor or wok hay, so it tasted a bit bland. The fried rice itself was decent, though not particularly memorable, even though I had it just three days ago. FAMOUS 1987 YELLOW CURRY - MP +dungeness crab This dish was very messy, so they provided bibs and gloves. The crab meat was difficult to extract, and even the pieces we managed to get were fairly bland and underwhelming. The yellow curry itself was just okay. We enjoyed some with the roti on the side and extra bowls of white rice, but none of us were particularly impressed. It was pricey and ended up being my least favorite dish of the night. SEAFOOD CURRY STIR FRY - 24.95 We were still hungry, so we ordered one more entrée. I'm not entirely sure if this was exactly the seafood curry stir fry listed on the menu, but it consisted of rice (possibly lightly fried) topped with a generous amount of seafood (shrimp, mussels, squid) and mixed vegetables. The dish had lots of fresh seafood flavor and umami, and the sauce soaked into the rice without making it soggy. We enjoyed this quite a bit and would recommend it. Overall, the food was pretty good, but I wouldn't order the curry crab f I return, I'd consider trying the chili lobster.
Haven't been to Saigon Star in a few years. They are famous for their Curry Crab. Had that, just be aware and ask for the price as it's market price, ours was $90 this past weekend. Make sure to get the roti, and the bread as dipping the roti or bread in the curry is devine! The pho was kinda mid, the star of the show was the curry crab. We went at 1:30pm on Saturday and there was plenty of seating and no wait. They don't have many large tables, so be sure to make reservations if you're bring a big group.
I'm not usually the type of person that loves lining up for hype but my friend recommended me to come by based on their limited time $50 curry crab special to promote their grand re-opening from their renovations so here I am with my inlaws. They do take reservations on the weekday and we made a reservation at the earliest time available which was 7:30pm, we came 10 mins earlier but ended up waiting until maybe 7:45pm to get a seat. It is super busy because of the curry crab promo so definitely recommend a reservation during this time. Food came out super quick, first the pineapple fried rice. It seems quite popular and I see it on many tables too. It was fragrant and just great wok hei. We also had the special beef pho and vermicelli bowl with spring rolls and grilled pork chop. All was done really well. The curry crab was perfectly timed to the end so we can dig in and get messy. The great thing is that they provide us with the bibs and gloves so we enjoy it without getting it on ourselves. It was tasty and different. My first time having it and we added a set of 3 rotis to dip in the curry sauce. The rotis were excellent, flakey and buttery, wish they came in a set of 4. I think the server should recommend to increase the set incrementally to the number of people at the table. Overall great meal and we enjoyed it very much. Apparently they've been around for many years (since 1987) and my SO said that we've been here before but I don't recall how it was before the renovations.
We came for lunch and they've definitely improved! Had a great combo deal of seafood laksa + 2 sides for $19 and we added a viet coffee for $2 more. Paired it with a pork vermicelli. They give very sizeable portions and the service was super quick. Overall would come back to try the other dishes!
5/5. I am so surprised I haven't had the time to review one of my favourite restaurants in Richmond Hill. I grew up in Richmond Hill and find myself coming back here time and time again - hence the 5 star. My family is also a huge fan. FOOD: - Curry crab - charge per market price - at the time I came for the restaurant reopening and the crab was about $50 special. What a deal. The crab can be shared, alone with some sides if you'd like. The curry crab is what they're known for - huge. Packed with flavour, and I recommend getting a side of Roti to dip the curry. - Seafood Laksa soup - they have a lunch special with seafood Laksa soup as an option + 2 sides. 18.99 - highly recommend as it is full of flavour and variety. Add a Vietnamese coffee to compliment the meal. One of my favourite go-tos. - Pad See Ew- was surprisingly so flavourful. In my head it was such a common dish- but I did not expect it to be a phenomenal standout. Highly recommend to share if doing family style. - Beef brisket curry with roti- another one of my favorite dishes that if not looking to eat crab, I would recommend it over and over again. Their roti is so crispy, flaky and savoury that when paired with the beef curry - it just hits. Packed with flavour. Service - amazing and friendly. The staff work well together and are able to keep an eye over all the tables appropriately. I find that even if they're busy they still handle the restaurant well. Ambiance- beautiful new renovations. A cozy, casual feel. Family friendly, and can accommodate large groups of 8+ in their big tables. If you haven't eaten here, I highly suggest you must. You're missing out the longer you don't know about Saigon Star!! So go!
Food and service was great! I went for my birthday and had their curry crab with roti! It was very delicious and the sauce was so good with the roti.
One of the oldest Viet restaurant! Came for the value pho combo but my group were probably the only table who ordered this. Definitely need to come back for their crab dishes because almost every table was enjoying that. The bun bo hue was sold out already (Saturday dinner ), so I got the seafood laksa. It was good but not great, I prefer other styles more. This one tasted like a blend of broth and Viet curry. It also came with two appetizers, I got the fish sauce chicken wings and salted egg calamari. Didn't taste fish sauce glaze from the wings nor salted egg from the calamari lol. Tasty but not adding up.
We've been coming to Saigon star since we were kids. We love ordering the garlic butter crab here and getting extra french baguettes to lap up that sauce. It's honestly so good! Usually we also get the black bean clams. It's a bit salty but something so satisfying about that dish. 100% would recommend coming here. We stopped by for a regular - non crab - dinner and we ordered their vermicelli noodles ( one with chicken and spring roll, and the other with the 3 meats). It was okay. I like the thick noodles, but the lettuce veggies were a bit much. It took over the plate and my leaves still had dirt so I didn't want to eat them, unfortunately. We also got satay skewers. The meat was nicely cut and tender, but they marinated it I think too long. It was very very salty. We went through a lot of tea eating that dish and my mouth still felt a bit weird. They're so nice though and we didn't want to complain. I ended up packing it to go and cooking extra noodles the next day to mix it with and help reduce the sodium. It was delicious! That peanut sauce - ooof.. I need a jar. So basically. I would come for the crab and seafood. 100%. I literally can't wait for the next excuse to celebrate so we can come get some garlic crab! Staff here are the friendliest people in the world. Every time we've come here (which is not super frequent - so they don't recognize us at all), they're so kind and cheerful. They make great recommendations and are always checking up to ensure you're enjoying the meal. 100% recommend coming here for the seafood.
I came here recently to welcome some friends who are newcomers to the GTA. I was very happy to find that Saigon Star is as good as it was a decade ago! The interior has definitely been renovated. And the service was exceptional! Even though we were here during busy weekend dinner service, their staff was very attentive and always available to assist. Our party of 5 ordered the 6-person set dinner, which includes their Signature Curry Crab. Beginning with a French Seafood Soup which was rich and tasted like a seafood bisque - our appetites were whet and we were thrilled by the whole meal. Of course, the crab was the king and we thoroughly enjoyed it with french bread and Chinese pancake on the side. Personally, I prefer the bread - it was the perfect vehicle to stop up that delicious curry!
This place used to be an institution I loved their curry crab and much of their food. However I'm not sure if they changed owners the last few years or something. It's an avoid at all cost now. The food flavours are all wrong from the pho soup. To the curry. To the Hainianese chicken rice. The service is not great. The price is also not worth it essentially. Also the advertised 19.99 combo is a joke they shrink the portion so much your better off not bothering with it can't even feed one person.
I have been to this restaurant many times over the past decade, and I have not been disappointed once! The main star (no pun intended) is the delicious curry crab. The curry packed a great taste, and there was a lot of meat in the crab shell. We also ordered the skewers. The beef skewer was a little tough and chewy, but overall, it was very good. Also, we ordered the lamb, and they were cooked perfectly! They were tender and juicy with every bite, leaving you wanting more! (We ordered another round of them). The cooked oyster was my least favorite dish. It doesn't mean it was not good, but it was not right for me. The service speaks both fluent english and cantonese and was beyond helpful and considerate. I definitely recommend this place if you are craving some delicious curry crab!
This restaurant offers great value for money. I particularly enjoyed their Hainan chicken, which was exceptionally well-prepared. It is definitely worth trying. 呢間餐廳嘅性價比好高，我特別鍾意佢嘅海南雞，處理得好出色，非常值得一試。
So this restaurant has been in my hood for like 30+ years (basically ever since I was a young kid I can rmbr it being here). The "$$" rating should really be a "$$$" rating because I think they've tried to rebrand/refurbish the menus and decor to have more of that upscale vibe. I also think they should add "seafood" to the resto's name because this place really specializes in seafood over anything else. So like I said, whenever I come here it's usually for a special occasion and the must order item is the curry crab. Yes it's a effing expensive and yes a lot of yelpers are not gonna think it's worth it. The crab is really damn good. My mom and I have both tried replicating the depth of that curry sauce at home to no avail. So 1 crab currently will set you back around $80-100 I believe (even though it says seasonal price on the menu). Just trust me and order this item (and maybe some rice or roti to mop up some of that extra, leftover curry sauce). The prawns are really good but there's more value in getting the crab (definitely worth a first time try if you want to try the unique flavourings they prepare). I think there's 3 ways you can have your prawns prepared. We usually get sambal chilli and garlic butter (cho lon). The baked garlic oysters are also interesting. I would entirely skip these tbh. While tasty, it felt like they sold these wayyyyy above market price. Grilled black cod was very meaty and also usually a must order cuz my dad's diet consists of mainly fish these days. He really likes the black cod here. The grilled eel is just avg and not as good as the cod. The grilled lamb chops are a must order. Served with a very tasty mint sauce to compliment and theres a lot of char on the chops. The pork jowl we tried once and it was quite unique because it was fatty and lean at the same time. I think it tasted like you were eating pork belly fat but it was actually flesh LOL. Would not call this a must order The spring rolls are surprisingly crispy and plump with filling. Very underrated spring rolls actually. And then ofc, can't go to an expensive viet resto w/o ordering some assorted satays right? The satays here are delicious. Chicken ones were better than the beef ones. The bo kho here is still the gold standard for me. Haven't found a better bo kho in the GTA yet. Fried vermicelli is avg and you can skip it frankly. But it IS a huge portion (in case you're with a large party and still hungry and need some carbs lol). Oh yea, notice how I never mentioned pho anywhere in this review? The secret is not ordering pho at this place LOL. But if you do, my friend swears by their chicken pho. He says it's better than their beef pho. TL;DR this place is insanely expensive and I wouldn't recommend coming here on a regular basis unless you're loaded. That being said, the seafood IS very very good and I'd recommend bringing your friends or fam to help shoulder the final bill LOL. Curry crab is a must order even though you'll see the flies flying out of your wallet after. Service is terrible for dine-in if you don't order a lot of food btw. The servers attitudes magically change if your order is massive.
Saigon Star has always been my go-to for curry crab Make sure you come early to find parking (or just park at the back) and to get a table (or get a reservation) because they tend to get really busy between 6-8! Food itself was amazing. Everything was flavourful and hot - no complaints! My favourite was of course the curry crab, but the sambal prawns were also very good. Service was exceptional. Everything arrived promptly, they kept refilling our teas before it was even emptied, and they consistently kept checking in with us. read more

Beautiful restaurant but they have to take care of the little flies that fly around the restaurant. Very hard to enjoy a meal as you keep swatting them away from your food. Hanoi platter - yummy and plentiful to share with a large group. Pho beef noodle soup - standard, nothing out of the ordinary. Beef curry - delicious. Got two breads to dip and they were equally as good. Chicken skewers - delicious. Meaty chicken, great sauce without overpowering the meat. Pork chop over rice - good but the rice was unusually hard. read more
First time back in over two decades, and felt like eating their Curry Crab. My friend made a reservation, but didn't need to for this weekday evening as there was still plenty of open tables. In addition to the crab, we also ordered their Seafood Platter, which had a nice variety. All the different seafoods were marinated and prepared with different seasonings, all of which were tasty. Was a little disappointed that they ran out of banh mi so we settled for roti. The roti did come out hot and flaky, so that was nice. You're provided with everything you need to eat the crab: gloves, shell crackers, extra napkins, and a bib. Curry was delicious -- sweet, but with a slight kick, and creamy. Can't remember if it tastes like it did ages ago, but definitely the signature dish at this restaurant. They also revamped and have a ton of other menu options, so there's something for everyone. Service was great, with the shell collection bowls being changed out pretty often. Tea was also topped up regularly. Parking is free in this plaza and tonight, it wasn't that busy so it was easy to find a spot right in front. But busier times, there is a covered parking lot a little further away in the plaza that you can use as well. read more

While tasty, it felt like they sold these wayyyyy above market price. Grilled black cod was very meaty and also usually a must order cuz my dad's diet consists of mainly fish these days. He really likes the black cod here. The grilled eel is just avg and not as good as the cod. The grilled lamb chops are a must order. Served with a very tasty mint sauce to compliment and theres a lot of char on the chops. The pork jowl we tried once and it was quite unique because it was fatty and lean at the same time. I think it tasted like you were eating pork belly fat but it was actually flesh LOL. Would not call this a must order The spring rolls are surprisingly crispy and plump with filling. Very underrated spring rolls actually. And then ofc, can't go to an expensive viet resto w/o ordering some assorted satays right? The satays here are delicious. Chicken ones were better than the beef ones. The bo kho here is still the gold standard for me. Haven't found a better bo kho in the GTA yet. Fried vermicelli is avg and you can skip it frankly. But it IS a huge portion (in case you're with a large party and still hungry and need some carbs lol). Oh yea, notice how I never mentioned pho anywhere in this review? The secret is not ordering pho at this place LOL. But if you do, my friend swears by their chicken pho. He says it's better than their beef pho. TL;DR this place is insanely expensive and I wouldn't recommend coming here on a regular basis unless you're loaded. That being said, the seafood IS very very good and I'd recommend bringing your friends or fam to help shoulder the final bill LOL. Curry crab is a must order even though you'll see the flies flying out of your wallet after. Service is terrible for dine-in if you don't order a lot of food btw. What's even better is that their combo costs only $18.99, which includes a noodle soup and two sides! Their mocktails are also stunning with a refreshing taste. Their mango smoothie and yogurt drinks pair so well with their savory dishes! Saigonstar will be undergoing a renovation, so look forward to their new menu. food is mediocre yet expensive. Doesn't compare to the traditional's recipes in Asia Seating is a little bit tight especially for larger groups there's no private rooms available. Large tables are limited, so make sure you make a reservation is advance. read more
Coming back to Saigon Star and it doesn't disappoint. Beef Brisket Yellow Curry was delicious, especially with the warm crispy roti. It is my first time trying the satay beef skewers and it was delicious as well. Avocado smoothie is very nice and compliments the mild spiciness of the curry. Saigon Star is still my favourite place for curry. Service was very good too. read more

We haven't had Saigon Star for the longest time (probably YEARSss) and was really impressed! We got the Thai platter, Malaysian kwai dew, shrimp salad roll and yellow curry beef brisket (not in the picture). We loved every dish especially the beef brisket - super tender and tasty! We forgot to get the roti because we had rice at home but will try next time. I found the chicken feet way too spicy though... Portion was generous and we definitely had enough for next day's lunch. read more

The service was amazing. We got the curry crab with roti and a baguette, jumbo grill prawns, Hainan style chicken and rice, and medium done beef pho (not pictured). Everything was delicious. Our favorite was the curry crab, side order of the baguette and the Hainan style rice and chicken. read more

Tip: reserve a table ahead of time! This place is known to have tasty food and it's become famous for it, so it's always busy and almost always every table gets reserved. Allergies: Curry contains peanuts, so ask about the ingredients if you have anyone allergic before you decide. They canNOT remove the peanut ingredients already embedded within the sauce. Parking: restaurant is in a plaza, so plenty of parking! Food: We always stop by here every time we visit Toronto. We had a table of 11 and chose the set meal: Curry crab, Lobster, Lamb, Soup, Pineapple Fried Rice, Chicken, bread to soak up the curry sauce. We added the black bean clam dish- that was passable, nothing to rave about. Soup- Their version of Chinese seafood soup, "French style", not sure what made the broth orange but the soup was tasty, texture is like a light chowder Curry-Mild spicy, might be too spicy for kids as my little one couldn't handle it- excellent Black Pepper Lobster- lightly battered and stir fried with black pepper, super mild in spiciness-excellent Lamb- BBQ style, tender and delicious as well Chicken- BBQ style, tender and tasty when dipped with the tangy sauce it comes with. Pineapple Fried Rice- Kids favorite! Negative: After the dinner, dessert soup came with the meal. Came here for dinner last night because I was craving for Hainanese chicken. It's been a long time since I've dined here. They specialize in Vietnamese food but I don't recall any particular dish that stood out for me. This restaurant definitely don't come to mind. This place only came to mind recently because my sister debated with me that this place makes the best Hainanese chicken and I said it was Phoenix restaurant. So I came here mainly to try this dish. The chicken was very well prepared but I can't say it was better than Phoenix and they lost my vote because the rice was a bit bland and hard as the seasoned rice is also an important part to this dish. We also had their yellow curry beef briskets which was very flavourful and the meats were tender. I can see why this dish is recommended by others on Yelp. The last dish that we got was the Vietnamese grilled mixed meats vermicelli dish which was really poorly done...meats were over cooked, vermicelli was hard and the fish sauce tasted like it came straight from the bottle. Overall the service was good and if I'm craving for curry, this place might come to mind! read more
Everything exceeded our expectation: service was above average, very attentive; everything we ordered was tasty, well presented, full of flavours, reasonably priced. The rack of lamb is must order item, came with 5 pieces at $28.95 (considering how expensive it is to buy it raw from Costco) and it is cooked with crispy outside and juicy inside. Yum yum. The Sambol wok clams $14.95 was full of flavour as well, never had this kind in other places. They really know how to cook. The vermicelli with shrimp and chicken is also better than average $16.95, big volume, so I would say worth it. The Vietnameses platter $23.95 is a big platter with 5 different kinds, the spring roll is exceptionally good, so cripsy We would definitely come back to try their curry crab. read more

This place advertises itself in Mandarin as serving High class Vietnamese food. They do indeed have dishes that you don't find elsewhere, like seafood - they sell crab, lobster, fish & oyster. There's even live seafood tanks. Unfortunately the food is uneven in quality though portions are pretty big. Note: on the menu, when you see "cho lon" it refers to shrimp sauce (non-spicy). "Malaysian" refers to spicy shrimp sauce (belachan). The Vietnamese spring roll was great. It was very crispy - the crispiest Vietnamese spring roll I've ever had. The stuffing was good too. There was quite a lot of meat, it had a good texture & taste and was well balanced, albeit slightly greasy. Wok lemongrass beef was good. It was well fried, with a subtle lemongrass taste. Malaysian anchovy wok baby bok choy had very fresh vegetables, but the flavour was not really seared in. The belachan had some aroma, but no heat at all. The smoky wok flavour (wok hei) was lacking. Cho lon fried noodles with pork & shrimp was disappointing.The flavour wasn't seared in properly and it lacked wok hei. The sauce was not evenly stirred in either - parts of the noodles were still quite white. read more
I'm sure I've been before but it must've been years ago. We were seated at a corner table beside the wall of windows. Unfortunately the first thing I noticed was cutlery that wasn't fully cleaned and had food residue on it. We ordered the Malaysian and Vietnamese combos with a fish cakes appetizer. The combos were cheaper than the other menu items and listed 4 components with each. The fish cakes looked a little on the burnt side when they arrived at the table but did not taste like they had been cooked too long. The rice with the Vietnamese combo was delicious. The pork chop was an okay size but the spring rolls were fried too long. The Malaysian combo looked a tad meagre with 2 pieces of roti and 2 chicken skewers with the least amount of sauce possible. Rotis are for dipping in sauce and that did not happen this time. I've only ever had Indian roti so I'm not sure if it's vastly different from Malaysian ones. In comparison to what I've had before these were too dry, oily and tough (as in hard to rip/bite apart). read more

The only reason you'd come here is for the curry crab. There wasn't much meat inside, but lots of sauce. The shell was a perfect hardest to crack open. The curry wasn't spicy, it was a cool curry (if there's such a thing). There was no price for the curry crab, but I was surprised it was $70. Everything else was pretty standard and reasonably priced. I had the pineapple fried rice, ho fan, vermicelli, satay chicken and pork skewers, and more. I'm not sure if it's because of a special event, but they packed the tables so closely together, there was barely any room to walk by. read more
Curry Crab... 5/5 on this one ... the roti with the curry sauce was absolutely delicious also! Shrimp mango salad.. 5/5 as the mango was 99% juicy and super sweet and the shrimp was a fantastic off set of flavour to the mango Vietnamese Condensed iced coffee is a 4/5 as it could have used a tad more condensed milk to battle the bitterness. Refreshing and a great end to dinner!! Will be back again! read more

This place is honestly a bit overrated. A few years ago,I had the curry crab and it was amazing, this time around it was good but not great. It was the same with the black pepper lobster. Maybe they've changed chefs/recipes overtime because it just doesn't stand up to what it was. Also tried the grilled porkchop over rice and it was so plain. The flavor in the pork hop was non existent and relies way too heavily on the fish sauce. The spring rolls that came with it were also meh. The pho. Was alright, nothing special. My family drove 8 hours specifically because we missed the curry crab... rip us. Good viet coffee tho read more

It gets busy during dinner time so best to make reservations beforehand. We always come for the curry crab with either the roti or the french baguette and it doesn't disappoint! It is a little spicy but super tasty when dipped with the bread. Be sure to wear darker clothes as the curry sauce tends to fly everywhere when cracking the shell! read more
