3.5 stars - The food is good. I ordered the pho Bo vien - meatball and the banh mi thit ngoi. Both I would order again... But only if I'm in the area. The pho came out super hot and I love it on a cold day... I think for the GR area it was good. In other metro areas, this was probably just standard. The banh mi was good. I take into account this isn't a Vietnamese deli so I can't expect like the quality you would get from a dedicated banh mi spot. The only thing that would bring this to a 5 star rating was the experience... I felt like I was standing at the front entrance for awhile to be acknowledged. Other customers looked at me awkwardly. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to seat myself or keep waiting. - it may be a shortage of staff... The auntie and uncle also could have been alittle more friendlier. It was way better than we had expected! The broth was flavourful and the right amount of oily, and the crispy noodle sauce was the right balance between sweet and salty! It was sad to see that we were the only ones there at that time, but it also meant it was nice and quiet. If I'm being perfectly honest I actually prefer this place than to the other pho places around here. The people running it were super nice and the service was fast (again, probably because we were the only ones tho). I think it is very odd to come into a family oriented authentic, immigrant run restaurant and expect American type service as there is a huge culture difference. Whenever you need something, just flag the waitress down and they get you what you are asking for promptly. It's just the norm and not a big deal since they are quick to bring you what you need. I have been a regular here since it first opened and come back every time I am in the area for supplies. Context for this place is important. In comparison to other restaurants around here, this place is great! The food is flavorful and herbaceous. The vegetables are always fresh and I have been to other restaurants in the surrounding area that were hit or miss with that. The food is filling and there is always a ton of meat. I never leave hungry and I honestly crave the bun bo hue regularly. There are always other Vietnamese people in the restaurant who are enjoying the food as well which tells me that this is THE VIET spot. The place isn't the most updated but I come here for the food. It is also always peaceful when I come in here and I've never heard anyone being too obnoxious or loud. I will always respect the owner and this restaurant especially after I brought my white mother in law in here. She struggles to drink tap water because of her health and I asked for an alternative to which he replied that he didn't offer it in his restaurant. He went to the back to grab my food and came back with something for her. He didn't charge me for it and told me to take care of her. I will always support this business for as long as it is open plus the food is as authentic as you can get in Grand Rapids and the owner is kind. My go to place when I'm craving a hot bowl of viet soup. I like the bun bo hue here, though I prefer it with more shrimp paste and spice. The vermicelli bowl is fine; hard to go wrong with that. The egg rolls here are great. I don't care for the sweet chili sauce, but it's great with fish sauce (the kind served with vermicelli). Don't be shy to call attention to the server if you need anything. Asian restaurants tend to operate that way. They don't check on you; you just wave them over when you need something. read more

The large pho was $11.00, but it was a HUUUGE portion!!!! the gernerous portion and taste made it really worth it. I got a grilled pork rice plate with meat pie and an egg, but there wasn't a lot of meat to be honest. Usually rice plates have a lot of meat to balance out the rice. I would say this place has the most traditional tasting pho broth vs other places right in town. It's right up there with Pho 99. The coriander takes it up one. Only reason this isn't my go to is the service (which is inconsistent) and the broth. It's hit or miss. If they can figure out their consistency. This may be the best pho spot in town. read more

Was just okay. I thought my pho noodles were over cooked but they gave a generous portion of meat. My husband got the vegetable fried rice and it was just okay. Yes, it is Vietnamese in an ocean of bland midwestern food, but not great. We were the only customers late evening. Several dirty tables, floor was also dirty, and I can't understand why they won't wipe down the various condiment bottles at each table. Crusty and greasy, and the chili paste jar was swimming in days old overfill. Not the most appetizing. We had 2 bowls of pho. Broth had no flavor on its own. Basically hot water. Basil, sprouts, etc were reasonably fresh, but a bit wilted. Once the soup was doctored up it was ok. The beef brisket and tendon had good flavor. Service was ok as well, but listening to the server have a discussion in Vietnamese from one side of the room to the other at maximum volume got a little tiresome. But then we realized that there were only 2 people serving and they tried to get to everyone the best they could and moved as quickly as they could. Had 3 different phos and spring rolls. The pho broth was very delicious and we could really taste the herbs. The noodles were a tad soft and they could put more meat, but overall very satisfying. The veggies were crisp and fresh. Owner not following many Covid restrictions including making customers wear masks until seated, and he wore his own mask under his nose! Tables are spread apart so at least that rule was followed. Didn't ask us for our name and phone numbers like he is supposed to either. Interior lacks any decorations or visual interest so our curious and antsy two year old was fascinated by the offering shrine which had many sparkling lights like a slot machine on it. After telling my son multiple times he could not touch the food offerings, he touched one of the light very gently and I thought that would be okay am not disrespectful. The owner came out of the back at that moment and told us he needed to stop touching it in a raised voice. I ended up waiting in the car with my toddler until the food arrived because he kept fussing. No descriptions on the menu for what the food is, which is common in many Vietnamese restaurants, but what is the difference with "Beef Pho" vs "house beef pho"?? The owner could not explain the difference. My soup was supposed to be either rice noodles or egg noodles and the owner did not ask which I wanted. I didn't realize this at the time until after I ordered, but hoped it came with egg noodles since it was in a different section from the rice noodle section of the menu. He guessed wrong (rice noodles), and I was upset knowing this was due to poor service. Broth was fine, chicken pieces looked sketchy, like it contained ligaments, etc so I avoided those.
