Hadn't been to Sage in well over a year, as I don't get to downtown too often. As we made a last minute decision, after attending the boat show, to try to get in, with no reservation, on a completely booked up Saturday, we were not setting ourselves up for or expecting to have the best of service. Yet everything was above perfect. From the greeting at the door, to the gorgeous decor, live music, lighting and overall vibe, I was reminded just how special a place Sage is. Our party of 3 enjoyed every course and nothing was less than exceptional. We had the roasted parsnip soup and Cesar salad, followed by the Crab Cake appetizer. For main course, the Thai Bouillabaisse and Lobster Gnocchi followed with warm Blueberry Crumble, cheesecake and chocolate crème brûlée. Highly recommend, this place set high standards and nothing has slipped. next time, I'll have a reservation made. read more

**** December 5, 2024 - Two for my wife' Birthday Dinner. I have reviewed over 60 restaurants in the Sarasota City and area since April of 2021. We have belonged to the Florida Studio Theater for most of that time and every night we attend we usually go to dinner beforehand. I park near the theaters and walk to the restaurant of the night. We dine and walk to the theater. I walk near or past this restaurant for ALL of these years! We have had it starred but for some reason we just never went here? The music from the rooftop caught my ear last week so we decided to drive TO Sarasota (no theater 54 miles roundtrip from our Venice home) just for this dining experience for my wife xx birthday at her request. I parked in my usual free spot so I don't get another $375 towing charge from the City and its predatory towing companies. Not a fan of valet parking when there should be an easy parking option.... and there was - in Sarasota City you just have to be careful! The exterior is delightful The entrance and lobby also inviting! We went to the rooftop bar to wait for our reserved seat.....we were purposefully early even with the almost hour drive in season. Live music was entertaining and prompt bar service was very nice! My wife got a Tito's vodka cosmo. The drink, in a plastic martini cup was about 50% full if a 6 oz or even 8 oz cup it was woefully small and based on the coloring maybe a shot of vodka? The only reason for the whining is because it was $16? In Manhattan you might get soaked for $15 to $18 but it is a "full figured" glass? I got a club soda with a sprits of cranberry for $6???? Bubble water and gun sugar for the cost of a beer? Ok onward.... Went down to the lobby to get in queue for our now on time reservation table. Another duo playing and singing in the lobby were a wonderful distraction and VERY good. Our table was an ok two top next to a support column but we were spaced away from others. the tables and chairs are stylish and fitting for the interior......however the cushions are very soft and not supportive and the table height is almost chest high unless you sit forward on the seat? Which you have to do because the back slopes backward - ZERO back support and you can feel the chair frame on your thighs. Pretty uncomfortable and my L4/L5 previously herniated disc was tingling a little. My wife confirmed the poor ergonomics. Utensils and glassware and water clarity and quality were great! Our server Steven S was TOP RATE! gregarious, conversational, and super well humored. Guiding and not afraid to make his opinion known on the food items AND probing enough to know I was not finding something exactly what I wanted. So he made an AWESOME suggestion and (not calling it a substitution, just an elimination (smile)) SERVICE was beyond what you would expect and on a par with the best restaurants!!! Zone defense table coverage with fast direct kitchen delivery, and bus service clearing table and sweeping out utensils and my favorite metric the never under half full water glass!!!! They delivered a fruit little palate cleansing taste after we were seated, very cute and elegant. For a first course I got the Pear Salad ***** and it was VERY fresh and loaded with a variety or greens and seeds, and veggies and a light wonderful dressing. My wife got the Fried Green Tomatoes **** and she REALLY enjoyed, I had a taste and it was smooth a delicious. For the 2nd/main course my wife went for the Short Rib **** which was beautifully cooked and the display with tri-color peppers was a stunning dish to see when it was presented!! (pictures somewhere worth hunting for) the beef was super nicely garnished and rubbed. I went for the (eliminate the seafood) "Veggie" Bouillabaisse ***** that Steven has recommended instead of the cold cous cous vegan style dish I was going to settle on. MAJOR great suggestion on Steven's part!!! This was a truly AWESOME dish with perfectly grilled egg plant and vegetable garnish and a perfectly (for me) spicey curry sauce and some black beluga lentils that I was saddened when I had eaten them all!!! REALLY flavorful and a tremendous medley of textures and flavors/spices. I am sure dessert would have been good, but we wanted to take a stroll and see the Christmas lights and grab a gelato on Main Street just a short stroll away. In summary, fantastic service! and a very good arsenal of food items and food groups to pick from very well prepared and presented. So why not 5 stars? Well because the ROI and economics were "lower" and frankly there are numerous great restaurants with equal or better food items and just as amazing service for ~ $40 to $50 per person w/o adult beverages instead of the $56 to $65 we spent and then throw in the additional second $16 Cosmo and you basically compound a 20 to 25% tip on there and we escaped for just dinner for two at $183.90. This was a dining experience that I will be dreaming about for a long time. Our server, Marley, made this meal extra special for us too and we will never forget his kindness, his knowledge and his sweet smile. Our food was amazing from start to finish and this felt elevated and elegant - but familiar and cooked and prepared with love. The setting was refined in a 100 year old building that used to be a newspaper printing company. This meal and experience was one we will cherish and we WILL return next time we are in town. This is a very elegant (yet comfortably relaxed as well) spot in downtown Sarasota. Our party of 5 came for dinner on a Saturday evening (with a reservation of course) and we had a great view of the entire restaurant from our spot. Our waiter was incredibly friendly and we even joked with him a bit. We shared a couple bottles of wine (unfortunately I can't remember the name but it was a white wine) and it was a gorgeous variety. I had the duck as my entrée but I believe the menu does change by season. The restaurant itself has indoor and outdoor seating (I think?) but thankfully we were inside since it decided to downpour that night. The ambiance is very tasteful but it doesn't feel stuffy. It's evident that they care about serving delicious food to those whom appreciate it. Would love to return here again in future! read more

Came here having seen the menu a while back and flush with the corporate credit card in hand. The location is magnificent near the bay tucked into the theatre district, and upon walking in the open, multi floor setup was impressive. Katie was summoned to bring the wife and I to our table on the top floor. The brutalist vibe was different, the lighting quite nice, and Katie was an excellent and attentive server. However, I am glad that this dinner was courtesy of my employer and didn't come out of my own wallet. While the service was as good as I've had in SRQ and the setting was awesome - the food was extremely disappointing. Our first course was the heirloom tomato soup for the wife and I had the clams and applewood smoked bacon. I will say the clams were quite nice with a very aggressive broth that seemed to want to be an avant guard take on a clam chowder. The wife's soup had a brie "crouton" in it which was exactly what I expected, pan fried. But it was rather small given the generous portion of soup. The mains were lackluster. I had the special, which was a grilled pork tenderloin served with sautéed oyster mushrooms and a grilled polenta. The mushrooms were quite good, but the pork tenderloin was overcooked and dry. I've done better at home. The wife had lamb chops. Only after the food had come to the table that we realized that neither of us had been consulted on doneness. She isn't as high on rarer cuts of meat as I am, but these lamb chops were done medium (and honestly, some of the lollipops were closer to medium-well). Meh. Not what I expect at an establishment that clearly wants to be near the top of the pyramid in Sarasota. It's that strange mix that makes it hard to recommend: a lovely enough experience that if someone else is paying might be worth it, but certainly not a place where after visiting once I would open my own wallet for again. read more

My girlfriend and I dined here on a Wednesday and had a beautiful night guided by our server Jonathan. Jonathan did an excellent job explaining the plates and offering recommendations. The restaurant is located in a beautiful building that used to be Sarasota's printing press and conveniently offers complimentary valet which is easy to find thanks to great signage and friendly staff. The door was opened for us by a friendly gentleman who then guided us to the hostess to checkin. Our table was ready and we were quickly seated to a big beautiful dining room with a nice looking bar. For cocktails, I had the old fashioned smoked tableside. It was delicious. Fun fact they also make a tequila/mezcal one that I am sure is also exquisite. For apps, we shared the seared foie which was perfectly seared and paired with a cherry gastrique. I wish there was more on that plate because it was SO good and we scarfed it down. We also had the corn chowder which packed great flavor while not being creamy and overly heavy. They split the soup for us which was a really nice touch. We also had the dumplings. They were super flavorful and well cooked. The sauce was slighly spicy and I loved it. For mains, we had the thai curry bouillabaisse that was amazing with black forbidden rice. Tied with that dish was the braised bison on creamed corn. So delicious. I am salivating as I write this review. We finished with the coffee chocolate creme brulee. I am not normally a creme brulee fan but it was exquisite. Highly recommend dining here and I will definitely be back. This was our first time here. We had no issues parking valet or being seated as soon as we checked in. Our server was fantastic and friendly and we were brought complimentary champagne for our anniversary. This is a beautiful restaurant with lots of open space and seating. We tried the seasonal Summer menu which has a lot of gluten free options. We loved pretty much everything we ordered. It was all brought out in 3 courses because we ordered a lot. The menu is thoughtfully crafted and very unique and intriguing in my opinion. The gluten free Crab cake was my favorite as well as the Steamed Hake on a banana leaf with turmeric rice, cilantro chutney and stewed tomatoes was a really fantastic and flavorful dish. I would highly recommend this restaurant especially for a date or special occasion. The rooftop is also very nice and you get a discount on 2 drinks if you show them your dinner receipt. The vibe and ambiance of this place is great! We tested out the rooftop bar and had dinner downstairs. Really nice music in both areas. We had a large group (~10 people) and had no issues accommodating us (with reservation, few days ahead of time). Every person in our group was very happy with their full meal and drinks. The cocktails were very unique and fun. We had lots of duplicate orders: bacon caesar salad, apple-pear-prosciutto stack, Thai bouillabaisse, and black cod with ginger mirin soy glaze. Really good restaurant with amazing service. I wish I remembered the name of our server, he was awesome and informative! The drinks were great! The music playing on the roof too was a great vibe! I ordered an espresso martini and loved it! I also ordered the lobster seafood bisque soup , but was a bit disappointed. Did not have a lobster flavor really and was not as creamy as I've had before. I also ordered the capers salad with goat cheese, and it was good, but wish it came with burrata cheese as it normally does, would have complimented it more I think but the pastry underneath was a nice touch. My entree was their pasta (forgot the name of it) it was very good! Loved the homemade noodles and the flavor of the sauce and filling. My bf ordered the skirt steak and it was amazing, perfectly cooked and seasoned. He had ordered this with the 2 courses which included fried zucchini which was amazing!!! Had a bit of an Indian flavor but wow I loved it and wish led I had ordered it. The course also came with crime brûlée which was also great! You had your primary server but everyone rotated through bringing out entree and checking in. We were in town on vacation and had our two year old. He's well behaved but still two. My new favorite hang in SRQ. Gorgeous ambience inside, great food, wonderful cocktails, friendly service. The rooftop is nice - can't compete with the views of the Westin, but it's comfortable, has a fire pit, and some of the live music is fantastic (just heard the amazing Hot Club of SRQ there last night). Service on the rooftop can be pretty slow (I think due to limited servers - last night there was only one) - but you can also go stand in line at the bar rather than wait for table service. You'll want to dress nicely for this more sophisticated spot or you'll look noticeably out of place. read more

I had the bison rib and the best part was the carrots that were served as an accompaniment. It was tender but tasteless. What a great spot. The ambiance and decor are awesome we enjoyed some great drinks on the rooftop while we waited for our reservation. The staff was friendly and attentive. I know the menu changes but I definitely recommend the pork Caesar salad, the stacked prosciutto was a disappointment as it was so little and not worth the price and definitely not what I pictured. Couldn't be more satisfied with our experience. Cassie was our server and there was not an inquiry she did not have a detailed explanation and description for. She was so knowledgeable and provided the most exceptional service; very professional. The menu options provided a great variety and I was very pleased with both the flavor profiles and the presentation. The ambiance was relaxed, classy, and overall stunning. On top of that, there was not a dirty, finished dish left on our table for more than 3 minutes. The table bussers were ON TOP of it I felt very taken care of and haven't had that great of service in a long time. DO NOT SKIP ON DESSERT . It was some of the best dessert in town . Our server amazingly put up, and played into, our shenanigans. She is the best. The food was out of this world! Photos attached. Ambiance was very lovely; aesthetics are a blend of rustic elegance with a sprank of modernity. The rooftop! Oh the rooftop. Once the only rooftop bar in Sarasota, it is now the most cozy; being surrounded by the taller more contemporary buildings with their own rooftop bar. But that's what makes this one special! At night, It really does feel like a warm hug, that is encircling you with the twinkling lights of The City. On this night, there were two musicians, a looper guitarist in the main dining hall and an electric violinist on the rooftop. A joy to listen to and nice touch to each place's atmosphere. Service was great. Food was almost perfect. I ordered the branzino entree and had to return it. It was awful. The pastry overpowered the whole dish and it lacked flavor. I got the rotini instead and that dish wasn't any better. All the other food and dessert we had was excellent so not sure why I couldn't find a decent entree. Also, they acknowledged (said hbd while walking us to table) my husbands birthday but didn't give him a dessert or drink or anything. What's the point in asking if it's a special occasion when making reservation if a restaurant isn't going to do anything for it? That was disappointing. We will go back to try this place again and hopefully I can find a good entree next time lol read more

As ked for bread to spread it on "NO" asked for a cracker to spread it on "NO" No bread in the house. Found this. Come on Chef you know better. How is pâté usually served? Pate can be eaten as a lunch dish, an evening starter or, possibly, a main component in "Tea party". Bar and ambience indoors is quite nice, but this review is solely for our experience on the rooftop. We had been excited to try it based on a previous experience inside at the bar, but the rooftop was closed that day. Went last evening and ordered a couple of their house drinks which were $15 and turned out to be pre-mixed drinks. My vodka drink was okay, but not worth more than $5. My wife's tequila drink was supposed to have watermelon, cucumber and pink peppercorn and it tasted like a cheap, watered down margarita with none of the mentioned flavors. They had a dj, but the vibe was as if it was a corporate party where only a few people were left to dance and close down the bar. read more

Had such an amazing experience at Sage Restaurant last night. I can't say enough good things! This restaurant is located in beautiful, Downtown Sarasota. It is simply gorgeous inside & the location is very unique. It's in an early 20th-century building that once housed the Sarasota Times. I wasn't sure what to expect, but this restaurant truly blew me away. Our server was so attentive & extremely knowledgeable on every dish. I tried the popular, guest favorite, that has been on their menu since 2019, the Thai Bouillabaisse with coconut curry sauce, lobster, shrimp, scallop, cod & "forbidden'"rice. There was so much flavor & I absolutely loved it. My bf had the Lamb Tikka Masala over Basmati Rice. He was so happy with his dish as well! Something to note is that all of the dishes listed on their current, Winter Main Course Menu are gluten free, which you don't see a lot! The restaurant downstairs offers a fantastic high-end dining experience that won't disappoint. Delicious, flavorful food. The Boar Appetizer was out of this world and I wish I had ordered 5 of those as the main course. It tasted similar to an enchilada and the meat was so tender. The Thai shrimp signature dish didn't disappoint. Rich in flavor, but not spicy like a typical curry. The shrimp and scallops were cooked to perfection. The service was superior to anything I have experienced in SRQ. They nailed the ambiance on every level. The interior feels like an old restored cathedral and the rooftop bar doesn't disappoint on sunset / city views. Just know that the rooftop doesn't serve food yet (waiting on permits). I recommend the pina mojito drink and sitting next to the cozy fire pit. The only negative I had was an unfortunate incident with a bartender and my bill. However, upon emailing the manager she was swift to rectify the situation. 10/10! I will definitely be returning. read more

First off sage has great vibes. From the exterior, to the main dining room, to the rooftop space. The interior feels almost mid evil with its heavy wooden door and dark tones but has a Spanish flare. There are 2 large brown leather couches available while you wait, and you can have a cocktail while waiting for your table. The main dining room is large, and the second floor dining space overlooks the main room. They have a very long list of cocktails, my favorite of which is the copa de oro (if you like anejo). I believe the menu is season specific. In winter 22/23 they had phenomenal appetizers- an elk carpaccio and foie Gras that melted in my mouth. The entrees were less delicious. We had an Asian style whitefish and another cut of meat. The desserts are plated spectacularly and are very pretty to look at. I would suggest visiting for drinks, apps and desserts. We had been wanting to try this restaurant for a while and we're glad when two other couples ask us to join them. The building is beautiful and the view from the 4th floor deck is gorgeous. We had a drink around the fire pit before dinner. We then preceded down to the first floor to have dinner. Beautiful area but way to dark. We had to use the flashlights on our phones to read the menu For appetizers we had some spring rolls and Caesar salads. The salads were good however the springs roll wraps were tough and the sauce had a weird taste. For entrees we had salmon ,Berkshire pork chops,and their signature Bouillabaisse. The portions were very small for the price except for the pork chops. The Bouillabaisse had a rich flavor but was ridiculously small for over forty dollars. One shrimp, a minuscule lobster tail,one scallop ,a bite size piece of fish and a large square of black rice. I don't know where the vegetables were. If it didn't have the rice it would have been too small to be called an appetizer. The desserts were good but again overpriced and small.Fourteen dollars , really. Service was terrific and they have valet parking. I'd go back for a roof top drink but not dinner. read more
