I feel like for being an "alchemy lab" they'd rotate their specialty drinks more often. I've been there a few times over the last 2-3 years and the menu is unchanged. They do have an extra holiday menu during the season, but other than that, the menu has remained completely the same. Well I was taken here to experience the establishment and I have some mixed thoughts on this bar/restaurant at this point. First of all you must enter through an alley, mind you I get it, speakeasy feel right. When you enter you see some interesting decor and once you enter the bar it is a dark, but a cozy atmosphere. The one thing that gets me is I really can't tell if it's outdated or dirty etc, but all good I guess. Be prepared for some small seating areas. Our waiter was a very nice guy who made a handful of recommendations that were very helpful. We had 3 different cocktails and all of them were very good. We also ordered the hummus appetizer, a chicken sandwich x2 and a burger with fries. The hummus was really good and the small toasts that came with it were very good as well (wish there were more of those), it also came with cucumbers and carrots ( not my favorite with hummus, but I'm sure some people that are into crunchy veggies will be happy). The burger was pretty decent and that goes for the chicken sandwich as well, they might not blow your mind, but for this type of bar worth ordering if you're in the mood. Now the French fries were really tasty and thin, yes I ate them all. Overall I need to try this place a couple more time's to really see what it's about. Can't believe this place has been open since 2010 and I just came here in 2023 for the first time... This is probably my new favorite place for a cocktail in Sarasota! It's pretty easy to find since the door has the name of this place in big letters, and there is NO password -- so if someone asks you for a password, they're just messing with you! When you enter, there is a cool sitting room that is decorated in a cool way. There's two big eyes on the wall that gave me Great Gatsby vibes. There's also I believe two bathrooms connected to the sitting room. To enter the bar, you need to just open the door next to the bookcase, part the curtain (walk straight) and you'll enter the bar. The space is not too small / not too big. We were able to find a free table for five people easily. Our server was Camila (or Camilla?) who was awesome. I love that they use the Toast machines here which make it very easy to put a card down / pay when you're done. The menu is also fun -- we came in December so there were plenty of winter cocktails. I loved the cereal ones (the spiked milk with the Frosted Flakes was good), as well as the Chai cocktail, and the Ginger something (had espresso in it). The fries were also delicious!!! If you like skinny, crispy fries then this place does them well, and it's a good sized portion as well. Loved my first visit so much that I'm coming back in a few days for Christmas Eve! read more

I recommended Pangea to some friends who were having a Girls day out in Sarasota and had called me to ask where the "speakeasy" was that I had told them about. They later called and asked me to join them. My past memories are from a couple of years ago and were of a super fun and quirky bar with outrageous drink options. When I got there (true it was a typically slower day) the place was nearly empty and the little lights that used to be strung around the room were gone and the menu seemed much shorter and not as "special". When I asked our server about the decor, her immediate answer was "new owners". This was certainly one of the more fun and interesting bars in Sarasota in the past but now it's just "Different". You can tell from my previous review of 5 years ago. I hope the new owners will make an effort to bring back the cool and wild atmosphere that used to be the norm at Pangea. Otherwise, it will just be another place to go with a difficult to find entrance (part of the fun). read more

They have small bites and crafted cocktails. Their lychee cocktail is a classic and their sir sazerac is tough, but in a good way. Thier French fries with the roasted poblano aioli is a great snack. Fries come out hot and crispy. Very dim lighting with great tunes in the background. Interesting spot. If you don't know where it is - in a back alley - it's near impossible to find. The vibe is cool, the space is dark and mysterious ... I was all in. The drink menu was very eclectic. I could immediately see why "alchemy" was in the name. We were there during Happy Hour which made all drinks 1/2 price. This was a good thing because they were pricey. The table got several different ones - a handful which were made table side - but it took awhile. This turned out to be the theme of the evening. Cool different cocktails? Awesome. Taking over 20 mins to make them? Not so much. ... and no they were not busy. Everything took awhile. The sandwich I ordered took over an hour and I had to remind them twice. We had to chase down the waitstaff more than a few times. The second round of drinks took another 30 mins after waiting 30 to order. Asked for a box which never did arrive. Had to go after the check simply to pay because our server went behind the bar and stayed there. We were there 3 hours for 2 rounds of drinks and snacks. Were the drinks innovative and delicious? Yes. Was the food tasty and fresh? Also yes. Was the service lagging to the point of being ignored and having to find someone? HUGE YES. I rarely leave a "meh" review but the positives only slightly outweighed the truly lackadaisical service. I found this place on yelp and the store front was adorable and closed. Then I scrolled through the pictures and saw the entrance was into the back alley so off we went. This place is absolutely overrated. Its quality has seriously declined since the Bar Manager and Creative Director Brad sold. I've been coming to this place for about 8 years or so and the only thing that redeems it is the good food that comes from the kitchen at what is now Marcel next door. I never saw the need to leave a review while Brad was the creative director, in spite of mixed experiences with the revolving door of bartenders that seems to go through this place. Having been in the service industry myself for 20+ years and being well traveled, you can trust my assessment. I've even given this spot several chances after the Change in direction they took after Brad sold and it's been a downward spiral ever since. They even seem to ruin drinks that were foolproof crowd pleasers back in the day. This has probably been my most underwhelming experience at a "craft cocktail" bar ever. The cherry on top which is what led me to finally post a review on here is the automatic gratuity that the female bartender opted to add onto my bill without notifying me. Keep your eyes peeled Yelpers and avoid this subpar bar at all costs. I highly recommend you choose Bar Hana by Kojo or Kojo for some good libations and no sneaky behavior from the waitstaff in terms of automatic gratuity being added to your check without being advised. read more

The food menu is small but pretty novel as well, with things like duck egg rolls and rabbit tacos. We came mainly for drinks but ended up ordering egg rolls and cajun fries - both were awesome and the poblano sauce with the fries was terrific. The coolest cocktails were easily the spiked cereals. One of us got Frosted Flakes with almond milk and it was certainly boozy. I really liked the Blue Mule and the Not Michael's Twist, while others loved the Sir Sazerac. We also had a seasonal drink called the Birdie Beets which literally had beets in it but was so good. This place is the true definition of a hole in the wall. The only way to get to it is through the alley behind the Main Street. My friends and I were impressed by the vibes here as well as how knowledgeable and friendly the staff was. Best of all, the cocktails didn't break the bank.
