My father and I stopped by Sagar in Hammersmith - as we have done sporadically for many years - for a quick lunch on Saturday, sitting by the window. A homeless man clearly on some substance entered the restaurant - where we were the only patrons, the restaurant having just opened for the day - and asked my father for money. We politely said no, but he persisted. As I continued to say no, he aggressively shouted at me several times to 'burn in hell'. During this episode the manager stood behind him - as did a waitress - doing nothing whatsoever, despite my pleas to them to intervene. Eventually, the manager ineffectually muttered to him that he should go, and while continuing to abuse us, the man took a handful of some sort of sweets that are on the counter and threw them both at the waitress and at us.
Once this incident had ended, my father and I asked the manager why on earth he had done nothing to help us, and he shrugged and muttered something to the effect that there was nothing he could do. We proceeded to be served our meal, with no hint of an apology, acknowledgment or compensation for what had just occurred. Indeed, we were even charged, and paid, a service charge. The fact that we can be abused and effectively assaulted by a homeless man in a restaurant with little attempt at intervention by the staff is extraordinary. The fact that the staff make no apology or acknowledgment of the incident is unforgivable. I have never, in any restaurant I've eaten in anywhere in the world, been subject to such a horrible situation and - actually more egregiously - never have I experienced such pathetic and ineffectual management.
The owners of Sagar will be hearing formally from my family, and we anticipate an immediate and appropriate response. Regardless of this, neither we nor anyone we know will be visiting Sagar again. read more
