Sagar Special dosa
James F.

Great South Indian food. It's all vegetarian and everything we had was delicious. The kurma was fragrant and creamy, the saag paneer was rich. I had the Sagar special dosa - it was an incredible South Indian pancake filled with delicious vegetable curry. Overall, a nice change from the sometimes heavy and fatty curries common in the city. The service was great. They were nice enough to put a candle in dessert for a birthday.

We had: Special Idli (little rice dumplings with lentils) Potato Bonda (Oh the pleasure!) (to start) Masala Dosa Aloo Ghobi pooris and rice I love this restaurant in Hammersmith and am constantly surprised at the relative dearth of vegetarian Indian restaurants in London. The great thing about eating in one is that it is always an adventure and well removed from the Bengali/North Indian staples we are all used to. The starters were good. I hadn't had Idli before and to be honest could probably give them a miss next time. Whilst they are unusual, I found the dumplings a bit too bland for my taste. The bonda were brilliant-golfball size balls of mildly spiced mashed potato surrounded by a hard crust-utterly brilliant. The masala dosa is always a show stopper-a massive Churchillian cigar of a pancake filled with spiced potato etc. The aloo gobi was also great. All this was mild by North Indian standards, so don't expect it to be hot, but they are wonderfully light and you don't get the same bloated feeling that follows a normal curry (maybe due to no ghee?). A welcome difference and the large bottle of Cobra was very welcome ( as always). Give it a go if your nearby. Four stars not five just because I wasn't a massive fan of the Idli, but other might be.

Very poor service. Very average food. Go to Shilpa for your South Indian fix.

Pleasant service and decor, and value for money, but food not special enough to warrant the rave reviews, and a little lacking in ambience.

The Warwick Arms has a quirky decor and charming ambiance. It's a typical British pub, and although it has a section of the menu devoted to British pub classics, the majority of the menu is dedicated to Indian cuisine. I'm not sure if there are other pubs in London serving Indian food, but it is the perfect combination! We sampled many dishes during our 2 visits here, including chicken tikka masala, chicken korma, saag paneer, vegetable biryani, basmati rice, and garlic and cilantro naan. Everything was absolute perfection. There wasn't a single bite of food that we didn't love. The Pimm's and Lemonade was a delightful and refreshing discovery for us. We enjoyed glasses of it our first night, and then on our final night when we returned with a larger group we split a pitcher. Our server was polite and friendly on both occasions. I was honestly unsure before visiting the Warwick Arms because although the reviews online are fantastic their website is minimal and doesn't even publish their menu, but I am so glad we stopped by. I would 100% recommend the Warwick Arms to anyone visiting London, especially if you are staying in the Kensington area.

The Gate - Dragon rolls and curry

But the Gate is close to Eventim Apollo, where I was seeing a show later, so the convenience couldn't be beat. Service was about what I expected for this caliber of restaurant. My partner and I are low fuss but the servers were prepared to offer suggestions and wine pairings for those interested. As for the food, we enjoyed what we had--her main was a curry dish and mine a sort of deconstructed dragon roll. But our favorite part was the matcha cake cup we shared at the end. Perfectly decadent. I don't think I'd say the Gate is a must visit for London as a whole but it's a great option if you're in or planning to visit Hammersmith.

Once seated, you will enjoy the immense window that allows The Gate to be lit without the need for artificial light. The decor is simple, a mixture between minimal, arte povera and industrial; a style that seems to be a must, if you want your bar to be instagramable and hipster at the same time. Everything is completed with green leafy plants and industrial style nude bulbs hanging from the ceiling. The jazz music in the background makes the atmosphere enveloping and sophisticated, making you feel like a freelancer drinking black americano in Brooklyn. The artichoke terrine with a dried tomato paste and grilled bread left me confused, it was too salty for my taste, not too bad if eaten with bread and its paste. The presentation of the dish was pretty and the bread was freshly baked. As per the main dish I had a beetroot burger with "fries" and a little salad with vinaigrette. The salad was fresh and tasty with Dijon mustard vinaigrette. The burger instead was rubbery, pink very processed patty that can easily be found at the supermarket. The matchstick chips were too thin, on the plate more as a decoration in my opinion. The service is really slow, even when the restaurant isn't crowded. They actually completely forgot that after the starters we were still waiting for the main course. we had to remind them after waiting more than one hour. Luckily, we got a fresh baked baguette and some olive on the house for the inconvenience.
