I felt like the staff took advantage of the fact we are tourists, with our American accents. Separately, note that this restaurant is no longer a fully vegetarian restaurant. There are a variety of meat options on the menu as they have changed management three years ago. I don't eat onion and garlic, not uncommon in Indian Jain food. The food came out pretty mediocre. It was fine. Nothing I would come back for at all. Especially not with this price tag. The food was expensive for what it is. Our bill ended up being £72 and then the server asked if we will add something extra for the chef, who had to create food fresh to accommodate my dietary restrictions. Again, this is actually quite common for Indians who are Jain. This was the first time ever I have been asked to leave a tip for the chef for just... doing his job? Are foods not usually cooked fresh nowadays? Are guests supposed to pay extra for chefs, cooking? After we added some extra tip for the chef, she asked if we are tourists from America. Yes, we are. Did you want us to tip even more because of that? We didn't hear our server asking any other table for tip and where they're from. Tipping isn't the norm in europe like it is in the states. We couldn't help but feel like they only asked us because they know we're not from here. It really pisses me off how she asked for the tip. It wasn't would you like to leave a tip for our service. It was legit to leave something for the chef for cooking us fresh food due to my dietary restrictions. She asked twice how we liked the food. The second time was when I was already out the door and outside of the restaurant. The food wasn't good. I said it was fine both times. The fact she felt the need to ask me again when I'm already outside the restaurant at 10:15pm. She probably knew in her heart it wasn't good yet she asked for us to tip for the food. Skip this place: they have 0/5 hygiene rating and are in need of urgent improvement. Like all of the indian buffets on this street, it is not sanitary. -No sneeze guard -Sign requesting only one plate per person (yuck) -The bathrooms/toilets are a mess: dirty, smelly, dingy, and no paper towels available. Like most buffets on this street, there weren't any southern indian items. They also provide very poor service: I was never provided with a beverage, nor even asked if I wanted one. They did remind me that service wasn't included in the bill. Since I received no service, I didn't pay for any. I like dinner service better, but it was nothing worth going out of your way for. Came here on Christmas Eve during a trip to London. The staff was friendly and patient. We looked at the buffet, but decided to order from the menu. For appetizers, we ordered Bhel Puri, Sev Puri, and vegetable samosas. The Bhel puri was alright, but the Sev puri just seemed like it was the Bhel puri except with yogurt on top. It tasted fine, but it was not set up like real Sev puri. The vegetable samosa seemed more like an egg roll and even came with the sweet chili sauce they serve egg rolls with. Not our favorite. Since Chutneys is marketed as a South Indian restaurant, we ordered dosas and uthappams for our main course. They were served with two types of chutney, coconut and what seemed to be an onion/chili chutney, as well as sambar. The uthappam itself had a bad consistency--hard like a thick chapati instead of soft and airy and fluffy like an uthappam. The batter was under salted and did not taste as though it had fermented enough. I could not finish it and had to order a masala dosa instead. The dosa was better than the uthappam in terms of consistency, but it had the same issue with too little salt and not enough fermentation. The potato curry for the masala was alright. The chutneys that the dosas/uthappams were served with were not good. The coconut chutney had a very sweet flavor that I have never tasted in a chutney before. The onion (?) chutney did not have any flavor at all. The sambar was on the watery side and not the best, but it was on par with most restaurant sambar. My family is South Indian, so I may be more critical of the food than most people. However, I think this place needs to improve their recipes for South Indian staples like dosa if they are marketing themselves as a South Indian restaurant. read more

Chutney's was always my favourite spot for Indian food on Drummond St, but I hadn't been for a while. We went for an early dinner last weekend, and were asked to wait a bit while they took down the buffet. 10 minutes later, they gave us menus, another 10 minutes later they took our order. Alarm bells started ringing when we looked at the menu and noticed it wasn't vegetarian anymore, mostly generic curry-house stuff with a few bel poori starters (the best part of the meal in the past). Looked at recent reviews and noticed they are under new management, totally new kitchen, etc. Tried to order our favorite bel poori style starters and a dosa, and was told they couldn't do those anymore. So left and went down the road to somewhere we could get what we wanted. It's a shame as it was great, but I definitely won't go back unless I learn it's back to the old team. read more

A few months ago, I turned up with a group of 10 people without booking and the accommodated us without a second thought. I would like to award this restaurant with 4 of my personal stars, the madras, bang on, nice thick sauce with succulent chicken. On the other hand you know me and you know how I like my naan's , well you don't but I'll tell you anyway , soft with a little bit of crunch on the outer circumference, this was to soft for my liking. Great lunch buffet, with so many options that if you just took a bite of each, you still couldn't get through all of them. It is all vegetarian but none of my carnivorous friends have ever left hungry. And it's a fantastic value, buffet and a mango lassi for under a tenner. Dessert is sparse (fruit, gulab jamun--balls of dough in syrup--and rice pudding,) but if you like Indian sweets, Royal Sweets is next door and world famous. Just come here for the weekdays lunch buffet. It's cheap and epic. Atmosphere and staff are traditional but in a nice way, also great for casual business lunches. Every time I come here I leave happily stuffed with great food. I feel blessed with having this place so close to home! Only tip: do not leave anything on your plate, it's a real waste. read more

Looking back, it seems as though there was a touch of destiny and fate that caused me to walk into Chutneys during my vacation in London. Why do I say that you might ask? Well, two reasons specifically: 1) my friends and I were only in the neighborhood because we went to take pictures at 187 North Gower Street/Speedy's Cafe since we're big Sherlock fans and wanted to see the location for the show's 221B Baker Street, and 2) although it subsequently has closed, one of my favorite Indian restaurants back home in Hawaii was also called Chutney, so the name played to my palate preferences. From the exterior, there really isn't much to mention. There isn't any special decor or signage, nor is there anything that would really set them apart from some of the other Indian cuisine restaurants in relatively near vicinity. Additionally, the interior, although clean and surprisingly spacious, also lacked anything of note that would really set them apart. The menu was pretty standard fare for your typical Indian place, and I'm fairly certain any Indian food fan would be able to find something to satisfy their lunch or dinner cravings. I don't know about any of you, but when I go to a new Indian restaurant I tend to stick to my default favorite order of chana masala and plain naan. And what was the verdict? I am happy to say that Chutneys didn't disappoint. The chick peas were not over-cooked and mushy, which is a culinary pet peeve of mine. The naan was also cooked well and maintained that nice chew and subtle burnt flavor/charring that characterizes that style of bread. And maybe the most appealing note for tourists and budget-watchers alike, the prices at Chutneys are very reasonable, especially for the portion sizes. Coming from Hawaii, I like to think that we have it pretty bad when it comes to cost of living and price of goods/services. But holy crap London makes Hawaii look cheap. So you can best believe I was grateful for a bargain when I saw it! Although Chutneys is a little off the beaten path, especially since I've been there done that regarding the Sherlock thing, when I go back to London--I enjoyed my time there so much that it's not an if, but when--I know I'll be on the look out for delicious Indian restaurants. So, who's to say that my stomach won't make an executive decision to jump on the tube and make my way back to Chutneys? If you're in the area, or hell, if you're just looking for some place good to eat, give Chutneys a try. You won't regret it. read more

Well it's not that cheerful - ordering loads of plates of curries and spicy dishes is serious business. It's the scoffing and knowing that everything on the menu is vegetarian, (which means I don't need to look for the little v symbols next to the food) that makes me happy. I can't remember the interior. It's obviously no Alan Yau but hey, who cares when there's so much eating to do. The only really horrible thing, other than been forced to use clichés, is... omg I can't even say it... instant coffee. Yes folks, in this day and age it's true. It's hard to better Berry's review, but three years later it is still all true. prices have gone up a little, but it still serves very good South Indian vegetarian cuisine, with an excellent buffet, but (unlike Diwana down the road) it is licensed so serves beer and wine. It is also a proper restaurant in feel, rather than a cafe, so better for a night out. A decent meal for two (I had a Thali a complete meal of dhal, curry, rice, chapati, and raita) with a large beer each came to just over £15 a head, including tip. read more

Chutney's is my favourite place so far to eat on Drummond Street, and all of the Indian options on the street are pretty good ones. It's all vegetarian and really reasonably priced. The lunch buffet is under £7 and comes with a large array of different dishes, each one delicious. I wish the bread they offered was a bit softer but that was my only real gripe about the food. The daal was delicious, my friend saying it was just like the ones she had when she spent a year in Sri Lanka. The dinner choices are great too and similarly cheap. I really enjoyed the saag paneer I had here. The service was pretty much what I'd expect, I've never had a bad experience with them. Oh Chutneys. I always leave you feeling uncomfortably full and sorely in need of a 4-hour nap. Drummond Street is lined with fantastic little Indian restaurants like this one. They do a vegetarian lunch buffet for £7. They rotate the dishes, but there's usually a selection of 7-8 hot dishes and 4-5 cold salads, plus the usual sides of naan, rice, and lots of sauces. I'm not a vegetarian but every time I come here, the concept of moderation completely goes out the window. It's quick, delicious, and cheap -- what else could you want? read more

This little gem is tucked away at the back of Euston Station, perfect as I was having lunch with as friend just before catching a train. I had one eye on the time so was relieved to find there was a buffet, eliminating the need to wait to be served (I imagine that may have taken as while as it was pretty busy) whilst offering a great selection of dishes to choose from, and all at the bargain price of £6.95. The entirely veggie offerings included several curries, bhajis, bread, popadoms and a wonderful choice of salads. I sampled most of the dishes and whilst they were by no means the most mind-blowing Indian food I've tasted, they were all hearty, well spiced and not too greasy. For desert I was treated to a big plate of melon as well as some more traditional Indian sweets, perfect after the large main course. Although it was a little chaotic with the tightly packed tables full to capacity, the service was friendly and the atmosphere relaxed and pleasant. What a great find! read more

Summary: food is tasty, service is bad, even by London standards. I came with my flatmate, and they didn't check with us once the entire time - we had to flag a server down to order, and then after they brought us our food, we waited a long time and flagged them down again for the bill. Good thing we were feeling chatty and not in a hurry. But the food was good enough that I almost went with 4 stars just for that. It's all vegetarian, which I love. The Chutney's Special dosa was especially delicious - a type of flatbread with a tasty dipping sauce. The price is also very reasonable, especially for London. I was introduced to Chutney's 20 years ago by an a fellow vegetarian Indian boyfriend, and I have not found a vegetarian restaurant to beat it since. Called chutney's after the vast choice of chutney's on offer with your meal, the food is delicious & the Cobra beers ice cold (Needed if you go for the hotter dishes/chutney's) I can't recommend the unbelievably cheap Sunday buffet highly, enough, the choice of dishes are vast & very varied, from mild to red hot, with a choice of breads & salads & if you have any room left, dessert. Anyone who thinks vegetarian food is boring & all the same, should take an advantage of a all day Sunday, or one of their weekday lunch time buffets, and sample what your missing!! (Might be best to wear elasticated waistband trousers tho, as you might bust a zip or button!!) I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough, but don't just take my word for it, go there & put it to the test!! read more

I came here for lunch one day with a bunch of co-workers because one of them was leaving and we were having a farewell lunch. In case you haven't figured it out, Chutneys is an vegetarian Indian buffet, and for lunch, it's a great deal as it's only £6.95pp. Surprisingly, the food was pretty good. There were a few dishes that I thought were quite spectacular (the onion bhajis, the taro leaves and the cauliflower dish), but the curries themselves were just kinda average. I do prefer my curries a bit hotter. But they were quite nice. The desserts were actually quite good, and I'm a huge fan of Gulab Jamun. The only downside is the service. You're pretty much ignored once you give them your drink order. I did have to ask for water several times. But for less than a tenner and unlimited vegetarian curry, perhaps you have to make do. read more

One of the best options among all the vegetarian Indian buffets in the area. Slightly less variety than Diwana, but definitely better quality for the same price (plus, the buffet includes chutneys!). Come here for the lunch buffet and don't bother with the regular menu. Make sure you use the same plate every time you get more food, and don't pick up extra silverware at the end of the buffet line, because you have some at your table and you'll be scolded for getting more. That said, load up your plate and don't stop eating until you physically can't move (just don't ask me what any of the dishes are). read more

The BEST value for money in London for Indian food, especially as far as buffets go. Who's heard of an all you can eat at lunch during the week and all day on Sundays for £6.95???!!! That's right and believe you me it's certainly well worth it. Usually, there are around 8-12 salads and 4 curry plus a dhal, rice, breads and sweets (not to forget CHEAP organic wines / to be poaid extra for). But it's a 'as much you can eat' buffet and friendly service to boot. These must be some of the remaining good guys in an otherwise not very cheap town! My favorite place to eat in London! I always go for the lunch buffet, and typically am so stuffed I hardly have to eat any dinner. Also it's a great value! I've come here with numerous people, and everyone has loved the food (even non-veggies!). Very highly recommended! They had this moist sponge cake like dessert with powdered sugar on top which was pretty good. £6.95 for all you can eat and we saw people waiting outside at 11:50 right before they opened. Chutney's is my favourite of a number of similar vegetarian South Indian restaurants on Drummond Street. I am a great fan of the arrangement in place on Sundays, when for the entire day they operate an all-you-can-eat buffet deal for a fixed price. Really delicious food: I've no idea what half of it is, but I pile it up on my plate and then return for a second helping of a similar amount. Highly recommended. read more

My buddy and I went there on a recommendation not knowing it was vegetarian. For a second it took us off guard but proceeded to order and we were not disappointed. Chutney's is one of Drummond Street's Southern Indian vegetarian restaurants, at the further end from Euston station. It serves dhosas (sort of pancake like things filled with potato and eaten with green coconut chutney) as well as more conventional curries. It does a choice of incredible behl pooris (crunchy concoctions of puffed rice, potatoes, herbs - difficult to describe but incredible to taste) a variety of unusual and delicious main courses. Most noteworthy, though, is their lunchtime and Sunday buffet. The range is incredible! It is full of healthy choices - vegetables somehow made to taste wonderful, fruits, chutney, of course - as well as curries and wonderful deserts. I would leave room for a lot of food - don't eat breakfast before you go, as you'll want to try everything more than once. Oh, and the prices are very good indeed. read more

This place was awesome! I got the Thali which came with 4 curries, 2 rotis, a gulab jamun dessert, and some raita yoghurt. I thought the food was amazing, and I had just studied abroad in India last semester, and this place had food almost nearly as good as I had eaten in western India. It was just more pricey than I was expecting (29 dollars/ 20 pounds). All in all, I would recommend this place. When I asked for the check/ cheque, however, the guy seemed annoyed that I did not use manners and say the words "May I please have..." Haha I guess that's not a thing we do in America. Normally in the U.S., the waiter brings us the check/ cheque the second after you finish your meal. read more
