We came here before we went to a concert at the Brixton Academy, and the food was delicious. I had the saag paneer and my husband tried a different veggie dish. We both loved it. We also had the vegetable samosas. While I preferred the ones from our local place (way back in Colorado, USA), they were still very good. The two downsides were the service and our table. Our table was squeezed in against a wall and my chair stuck out into the walkway, so I got elbowed in the head once. I know it's a tight fit but it obviously wasn't fun. The service was slow. Great indian dishes for a very fair price! The waiters are very kind and polite. I ordered the Thali plate, which was quite perfect. I would definitely recommend it! Came here based on the strong reviews. Definitely a disappointment. The inside is a fairly typical Indian restaurant. Waiter was friendly. I ordered the mixed grille because I wanted to try a variety of things. Pretty much all the meats were just ok. Nothing spectacular. I ordered the Indian ice cream for dessert. It was hard and had a strange consistency. Tried to let it melt to see if it became smoother. It didn't. Based on Yelp's 4.5 stars I was hoping for a better experience. This was probably our favorite Indian restaurant on our trip to London. That being said.. The tandoori lamb was a little tough/dry as was the white chicken meat. The dark chicken meat tandoori and the ground lamb, as well as the curries, were very good. While we were there, the waiter engaged in an argument with me about not getting our order of mango lassis right. The wording on the menu was confusing. We ordered 2 mango lassis and below it on the menu it said "salty or "sweet." My husband ordered a salty one and I ordered a sweet one. Our waiter came out with 2 plain lassis. I tried to explain we had ordered the mango lassi but our waiter insisted I hadn't said "mango" and that "salty" and "sweet" applied only to plain lassis, though this is in no way clear on the menu. I was nice about it and tried to squash the argument by saying maybe I hadn't specified mango, even though both me and my husband knew I clearly had, at which point he backed down, but he was very intent on carrying on the argument, insisting it was my fault, and did so for several minutes. It would have been nice not to have had to deal with an argument over dinner. He eventually did exchanged my plain lassi for a mango one. Another thing to note, the day after eating here both me and my husband came down with pretty bad sore throats. I looked it up and it may have been because we were sensitive to some of the sour spices this restaurant uses. Everything tasted good and was well seasoned, but it did affect us after. It may have exacerbated whatever infection or virus we were already carrying. In light of this, while we did enjoy the meal, I think we were a little traumatized by our experience here and would think twice about coming back next time we're in London. read more

Found this via Yelp (obviously!) while feeling peckish in the area. £16.50 for the whole meal of tandoori lamb starter (nice), chicken tikka main course (juicy but somewhat lacking in taste/spices), naan (ok) and a large beer (well lager is a lager...). OMG. The food here is *amazing*. The lamb samosas are so light and flaky, and the lamb filling so tasty, that it seems a shame to use the minted yogurt with them but it was awesome! Philip said that was the best prawn biryani he'd ever had and my sizzling dish of lamb with vegetable curry was one of the most delectable things I've ever eaten. This is the sort of place that when you're in town, you make it a special point just to go. I may live 4200 miles away (a tad bit outside their delivery area) but when we're in London again this will be the first restaurant we visit. A very lovely find and a very gracious staff. The food was good and the aloo saag was fairly unique in that it wasn't a creamy sauce more like minced spinich and potatoes. The menu was extensive and all the dishes we had we're good including prawn biriyani, chicken Tikka, chicken Tikka masala. The matar paneer was strongly infused with coconut. I've heard great things about Indian food in London so when my friend and I were looking for a place to eat near the notting hill area, we found this place. It's pretty tiny, tucked into the street so you may not notice it too much when you walk by. The staff was very friendly and made good recommendations when we asked for it. The great thing for me was that they had a wide selection of vegetarian food (which is often vegan if it doesn't have cheese or butter). I asked for a recommendation and ordered the vegetable naga bhuna, which was a spicy veggie stew with a bunch of vegetables like eggplant, cauliflower, potatoes, chickpeas etc. I loved that it was actually spicy and it went great with some jasmine rice. My friend ordered a butter chicken with chapati and she said that was delicious too. Service was quite fast and I thought the food was really authentic and very affordable (by London standards). For the price, I was expecting a lot more flavor -- and, unfortunately, the restaurant just couldn't deliver. To start, I got the lamb samosas. These were really disappointing. There was hardly any filling in them. The filling was pretty good, but this was mostly just fried dough. For my entrée, I got the chicken tikka masala and some plain rice. The chicken was cooked really well and was actually very soft. However, the dish was lacking in the flavor department. I know tikka is not supposed to be overwhelmingly spicy, but mine just tasted very bland. More spice, less tomato would have been nice. Overall, not my favorite. Since my stay in HK I've become a big fan of Indian food! Unfortunately we have only few Indian restaurants in Germany, so I was glad to be in the UK being able try again great Indian food á la butter chicken etc. I tried 4-5 different restaurants, most of them located in Soho and rated with 4 to 4,5 stars and was actually a bit disappointed since it just didn't taste as good as in HK. I'm now happy that I've finally found Bengal Tiger because the food is great and the people are nice! I can especially recommend the chicken saag, in which they use a good mix of different spices, which harmonise well! Moreover the naan is super fresh. It always comes directly out of the oven! Bengal is a cute little Indian restaurant just off Royal Oak tube. It is near my house so we have visited several times and I have to say I like it even more than Khan's. The reason for this is that the food is on the same level but they have nicer staff who are usually able to recommend you good meal or adjust it how you like it. Last time I went they made our food saucier than it was supposed to be :) Another reason is that they serve alcohol here. I recently visited this restaurant again after one year away from the UK and found my favorite dishes ( tandoori , king prawn chili garlic curry as well as vindaloo Madras and Bhuna curries ) still as delicious as ever . I was however a bit perturbed that there were not many customers and therefore wonder why. One explanation is that food trends seem to be changing and not many people are now familiar with the real hard core Bengali/ Bangladeshi dishes any more. One thing I suggested to the owner is to not use tin prawns and always use king prawns and charge a little bit more which would make such a difference to the taste and quality. I have now departed this great city and am looking forward to visiting the Bengal again next year read more

I really wanted to try some Indian food in London because I heard it is amazing and Bengal Restaurant fulfilled my craving! Mind you, I am from America so I wanted to try it out. I went here with 13 other people and I saw it had really good reviews so we went for dinner. The service was amazing, especially Fazi who helped us tremendously. The food was delicious and I recommend sharing the dishes with people because they are pretty big portions for just one person. Everything was yummy and flavorful! We almost missed this gem as the hours were listed incorrectly on Yelp. Am I ever glad we ventured over here from our hotel near Paddington Station. This was by far the best Indian food I've EVER had! Disclaimer: I'm grew up a mid-western American girl from Indiana (not to be confused in any way with India) and my exposure to Indian food has been limited to my new home in Southern California, which may or may not be authentic. We were only in London a few nights, but made it a point to make a second trip to this restaurant and overindulge. The papadum appetizer with sauces was brilliant. We had a variety of dishes: korma, plain tikka chicken, tikka masala, butter lamb and chicken, and saag paneer. Everything was fabulous. My 8 and 9 year old boys powered through everything. I had a brain fart and accidentally tipped over 20%, instead of what I'd researched was the local standard of 10%. Considering how much we'd ordered, it was not insubstantial. It was the first time we'd ever had wait staff shake our hands as we left a restaurant. We may have left a few grains of rice, but by the time we rolled out of there, realizing I'd likely never be back, the thought of moving to London briefly crossed my mind. read more

Was I surprised to find that the restaurant with the best Indian reviews in the area was just around the corner from me! I've walked past it almost every day and had no idea of this gem. Delicious food and excellent and most friendly service!! The 5 of us shared dishes, naan, and rice, (and good cheap bottles of house wine) and were extremely satisfied with it all. My friend asked for a take out menu (they do free delivery with orders over £12 too), and not only did they provide us with that, but sweetly gave us magnets and a giant calendar too. It's a pretty small room and (during my visit) the waiters hover in a slightly disconcerting way--until you want a check, of course--but the food was fine. And the prices are fair. I'd recommend not getting the mixed grill--not that it was bad, but undoubtedly you'll like some of the items more than others and then just wish you had ordered the ones you liked instead of the full melange. read more
