We visited Saffron on a Monday evening for casual dinner. There was no wait for the table at 7.30PM, though the place was crowded. Set up was clean with a spacious seating area. We ordered appetizers - Kolonji Paneer Tikka and Vegetable Momos. Our order arrived quickly. Paneer tikka was bland, had no grilled taste. It was like steam cooked paneer in creamy sauce . The Nepalese eat vegetable momos was served with chutney, it was hot and delicious. I loved the saag paneer and garlic naan combo for the entree. The staff was polite, quick, and friendly. Location: Unassuming location in a strip center. At 6pm on a Friday we were one of 3 or 4 tables. Indian music in the background was not too loud and there seemed to be plenty of elderly people holding conversations at tables. A steady line of patrons and take-out orders filled up the tables by 7pm. Food: We took Yelp ordering suggestions and were totally happy with our choices but, honestly, I think the menu is small enough that Saffron is probably serving the best of their dishes. Do not miss the Saffron Naan. Service: There was an abundance of servers and front of the house workers. In fact, so many I lost track of how many went by my table. We were served food in about 10 minutes and our drink cups were kept full. Interesting that they are a BYOB place--seems to be missing out on considerable cash flow. Went for the lunch buffet on a quiet Thursday at noon. As vegetarian selections, the buffet had saag paneer, paneer makhani, mix veg curry, and dal, along with naan and white rice, and a good selection of salad veggies. The curries were all made just right; none of them was overly spicy or oily. The naan wasn't hot when I got it; it would have been nice for the staff to bring hot naan (or roti) to the table instead of piling up naan in the buffet basket. The only dessert was kheer which I did not try. Service was friendly and pleasant. What a great find! The food here is fantastic! While visiting my brother in Austin during the holidays he sent me a list of new places he wanted to check out; Saffron being one of them. After perusing the menu and pictures of their food you didn't need to twist my arm to get me to eat here. We left in time to beat traffic out here and were seated immediately upon arrival. We were greeted warmly by a host and smells of delicious curries that filled the air. There weren't many people dining when we got there, but when we left there wasn't an empty seat in the house. We ordered the Gobi Manchurian, Murg shahi Korma, chicken momo's, lamb sekuwa, and garlic naan. I liked all the appetizers but I liked the entrees a lot more. My favorite was the murg shahi korma. The pistachio and cashew curry is so silky and flavorful I wanted to lick the bowl (but obviously I didn't lol). In fact, I loved it so much I went home and looked up recipes for how to make it. Looks like it's BYOB but there's a shop nearby that will help with that. I wish I came for the buffet because it'd be reallyyyy hard to get me out of there! Easily my favorite Indian meal that I've found in Austin. Staff is extremely friendly and attentive. I tried the Bombay Brussels and they may possibility be the best Brussels Sprout dish I've had... so I highly recommend giving those a try. For my main course, I went with the Malai Kofta and was very happy with it. Flavor was strong and it packed a little more spice than most Malai Koftas that I've had... which was welcome! don't really want to write this, but it needs to be seen by the owners. have been here at least a half-dozen times, and it was always a nice experience. took my friend there today anticipating another pleasant lunch. from the moment we walked in, everything went sideways...the seating hostess took us to a table we didn't care for, but quickly walked away before we could ask for a different one. when I approached her to request another spot, she displayed annoyance. we were finally seated at an acceptable place and got in line to load our plates. the first thing we noticed was that the floor by the buffet line was a gross, sticky mess. as we perused the selections, they were vastly different than any other time I've been there...mostly soupy, sauce-like affairs with nothing identifiable in them. rice was cold, naan was cold... altho we were there during the 12-1 lunch window, many of the offerings were just barely-warm leftover dregs and there was no effort made to replenish them during the time we were there. the serving areas by each selection were simply NASTY...food was splattered everywhere. I could go on, but you get the drift... the wait staff, which on previous visits had been friendly and attentive, ignored us for most of our meal. we had to request more water twice... so, yeah every place has an off day, but we were completely disgusted by the startling lack of cleanliness and absence of fresh food. it was so beneath the minimum standards for acceptability that we won't be returning. sad, as we liked this place. read more

Wow! Just wow! This food was hands down the best Indian food we have had in Texas. We ordered the malai kofta, saag paneer, chicken tikka masala, and one order of butter naan. Good, not great, and I felt the portion sizes were a little small for the price. One thing this place does better than other Indian restaurants is presentation. The interior off the restaurant is quite nice considering it is in a standard strip mall. I went with the Lamb Sekuwa, which was under their Nepalese menu since I'd never tried Nepalese food. It was beautifully plated, but seemed a little small. My friend stuck with a classic Indian dish, Chicken Tikka Masala. It wasn't bad, but seemed to lack some of the spice and flavor you expect from Indian food. A little too much cream and not enough tomato and spices for my taste, and like my lamb dish, the portion size seemed a little small. Overall a decent dining experience, but I've found that Indian food in Austin is continuously expanding and improving. I'm not sure where else I can find Nepalese food in town, so I may come back to try more from that menu. read more

This place is amazing. We tried several local Indian restaurants before deciding on Saffron to cater our wedding reception. We had about 200 guests of various cultures and ages and everyone raved about the food. The owners Neil and Tashi went out their way to make our event amazing.
