What a gem! Was taking an elder to medical care nearby and decided to stop in for lunch on a Thursday afternoon. Plenty of tables available. We started with samosas, and they were enormous and delicious, and tasted fresher than at many places in town. I had lamb vindaloo extra spicy. It would have been pretty spicy for many people, but they brought me some extra heat to take it to the next level. Aside from heat, the dish was nicely seasoned and generously portioned. The sauce was so tasty I nearly ate my napkin. My companion had the lamb pasanda. It was mild but filled with rich flavors. She really enjoyed it. The garlic naan was moist and airy, exactly as it should be. Even the basmati rice was done well, with green peas in it for an extra twist. For my entree, I couldn't decide between the Lamb Rogan Josh or the Lamb Pasanda. I chose the Pasanda and it did not disappoint! In the last couple months, my family and I have tried about everything on the menu. All authentically spiced with a wide mix of vegetarian/vegan and meat options. And the best part are the leftovers the next day-i always order more than we can eat for the leftovers. Only one complaint, the fried chicken was really dry. I didn't know exactly what to expect, but small pieces of tandoori red chicken, overcooked. You know when you find a place that is unexpectedly amazing and don't want to tell anyone because you worry it will become too crowded? Yeah that secret is Saffron for me... I live down the street and have frequented here a handful of times but only for the lunch buffet so far because, well.. it's spectacular for the price. Between 11AM and 2PM everyday you can pay $10 for unlimited plates from the variety they serve. The soup is always a wonderful start... soul-warming with just the right amount of spice. I put a nice mound of basmati on my plate and go kinda nuts with the Saag Paneer, Daal & Channa Masala. The naan bread and sauces (chutney, raita, etc.) are a great addition. More to sop up the deliciousness. There's even salad and a simple but refreshing dessert. Some sort of creamy pudding with tapioca and spices. I've been meaning to try some more Indian places to eat, so I came here after being referred by a friend! Walked in and you immediately can smell the delicious food fill the air. At that point, I knew this place was legit. Started off dinner with the Bombay Brussel Sprouts. These were delicious as they were covered in a creamy mustard sauce! For my entrees, I first tried the Chilly Chicken, which is an Indo-Chinese dish. This one was a perfect mix of sweet & sour, really enjoyed the flavor! Next I tried the Achari Chicken, which is a North Indian dish, which is covered in spices and soaked in a tomato-based curry. This dish had a lot of flavor and went really well with the garlic naan and white rice! My server, Anubhav was amazing! Saffron was an unexpected surprise - the four of us blew off the lunchtime buffet combos and went straight off the menu with three apps, five entrées, classic Basmati & Naan sides, and two desserts. It was a lot of food. And the Chilly (sic) Chicken and veggie Chow Mein were so good I stood proudly and recited scenes from "Slumdog Millionaire." I'm pretty sure the house thought that was cool. Interestingly enough, those two items were from the Nepalese section of the menu, which I thought was simply great Chinese. That may be politically incorrect. On the other hand, the Lamb Sekuwa was seasoned somewhat inscrutably, and way too dry for me. You may see it differently. As far as Indian goes, the chicken lollypops & Tikka Masala seemed pretty standard, but the Tandoori chicken was superb. A plate of steamy goodness. Now I'm curious about their other Tandoori fare. Incidentally, flavored iced tea is not my favorite beverage, but it was good here. Cardamom & cinnamon? Yes, Saffron is a strip mall restaurant, the décor is best described as "minimalist," but when they bring your food, you won't care. As least we didn't. I took a friend to Saffron for lunch recently to experience their lunch. I'd been for dinner previously and loved it. If I'm going again, it's for dinner. I prefer to kind of wander all over the menu. But I was told that lunch was a buffet so I thought it would be a great opportunity to try several items. Except... it's not really a lunch buffet. It's more a cafeteria style. You'll pick a plate or a wrap, both reasonably priced with naan. I don't think the intention here is to deceive you into thinking it's a buffet but it does need to be re-labeled. Saffron is located in a strip mall on Far West and on a rainy sat afternoon around 5pm, there were only 3 other tables of guests in here with us. There is a buffet set up but it looks like its closed for dinner service so its menu only. I have never tried Nepalese food and even looking at the menu it was a little overwhelming. We decided to get the mango and lychee drinks, which were like sweet yogurt drinks. I really liked the lychee one even though it was a pepto bismal pink. As for the food, we ordered the lollypop chicken and calamari. The calamari won hands down. The batter was so flavorful and delicious, I even felt the dipping sauce was taking away from the calamari itself so after one dip, i just ate it on its own. For the main course we ordered the curry lamb and goat dishes. Surprisingly the dishes do not come with any rice and has to be ordered separately. All in all, our tab came out to aboout 60 bucks total. Pretty pricey overall for a dinner for two. However I did have some of the curry left over for the next days lunch. read more

Saffron is one of the better Indian buffets in the area. We went there for Sunday lunch and enjoy the nice spread they have to offer. It's a nice clean set up with a lot of different options. Started out with rice and chicken soup which was very flavorful and served at the right temperature. The naan and other offerings were also tasty and cooked right. One thing we look for an Indian buffet is The variety of choices, and saffron did not disappoint. The servers were very attentive. They had one dessert option, rice pudding, but it was really good. My favorite was the veggie korma, I helped myself to three servings of it. The value for money that you get is top-notch. Saffron is a casual restaurant with very good food, courteous service and reasonable prices. My wife and I went in on a Sat night around 7:45 without a reservation. It was nearly full but we were seated immediately. We asked the waiter for recommendations as we wanted to try something different than the typical Indian dishes on the menu. We ordered Gobi Manchurian for an appetizer. This is fried cauliflower in a tangy tomatoey sauce. It's not batter fried, more like stir fried. It was excellent, tangy but not spicy. For entrees, we got Baigan Bhartha, a very nice eggplant dish, and Lamb Pasanda, which is lamb in a sauce made with cashews and pistachio. Both were excellent, very flavorful and full of spices with just a hint of heat. All the dishes are served in metal bowls that look deceptively small but hold a lot of food. We also got garlic naan, which was excellent. This was a lot of food that could easily have fed 4 people. We added a piece of mango cheesecake to go. The total bill was $45 (+tip), which was very reasonable. Saffron is not fancy, in fact it's pretty plain looking, but the food and service are excellent. We're sure to return. read more

This place is a real gem. The menu has best-in-class version of dishes from southern India, northern India, and Nepal (the middle and the latter being billed as "Himalayan"). Meat eaters and vegetarians can share a meal here, and everyone will leave happy. I'll even take this a step further in opining that many meat eaters will *LOVE* the vegetarian dishes (even though they may not tell you this). Given the vast supply of pretty decent Indian in Austin, we opted to focus on the Nepalese portion of the menu, but will be back again and again to try everything on the menu. The standout for us was the Gobi Manchurian (fried cauliflower in a sauce imported from The Heavens). In fact, we almost couldn't stop ourselves from ordering two more of these. The saffron goat curry, lamb sekuwa, and the aloo chili (the latter from the Nepalese section) were all perfect. Obvious that the freshest ingredients were used and that great time was taken in the preparation. Right now--while they wait for their TABC license--it's BOYB (and there's a liquor store right next door). The interior is cute and comfy. I have been coming to Saffron for years & they have never disappointed. On Sunday, they want above and beyond. My best friend also loves Saffron, but now lives in San Antonio and we were getting together for the first time in over a year and I wanted to do something nice and take it down. I called on Friday and asked about how I could have the food ready at 4:30 when they opened again. The manager assured me that everything would be ready on time and it was well packaged and travel well. I got our standards - Saag Paneer, Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Biryani and Naan. Spiced Medium. It was literally the best Chicken Tikka Masala I ever had, huge moist chunks of chicken in a fresh sauce. Also, the paneer is always very fresh and never rubbery. My friend, her husband and I all enjoyed it while watching the Oscars. Everything was ready on time, delicious and we all enjoyed the food immensely. I have tried pretty much everything on menu and it is all great. Tonight, after a long week and very clean house, I decided to order again. at 7PM, I told the manager I would be there at 8:15 because I did not want to get there right at closing but wanted to get a walk in before and still need to work a little more. I went their for the lunch buffet. Not your typical Indian restaurant as it has some Nepalese/Himalayan influence. Their yellow rice dish was quite nice and had a fried rice like taste. Their naan was crispy but could be a little fluffier. Typical dishes like the saag paneer and chicken tikka massala were there, and tasted like a good quality Indian buffet. This place was hoppin' on a Thursday night!! First things first: it's BYOB with no corkage fee, and there's a beer/wine shop next door. Win. Mint chutney and spicy sauce are so, so good. If they don't bring 'em, ask! There were a lot of Indian dishes on the menu in addition to the Nepalese fare. We ordered fried dumplings and samosa chaat as appetizers. The chaat was awesome. We split the Saffron mixed grill for dinner. It came with shrimp, tandoori chicken, lamb, etc and all the meats were juicy, tender, and awesome! The waiter suggested a curry sauce since the dish isn't sauced, then brought us an awesome tikka curry. Garlic naan and rice rounded out the meal, but the mint chutney and spicy sauce were the stars of the show. GET THE SPICY SAUCE. Trust me. We had a great experience at Saffron. The waiter was friendly and walked us through the whole menu without judgment of our lack of knowledge about Nepalese cuisine. The owner (manager?) came and spoke with us after the meal to ask how we heard about the place and to ensure we enjoyed our meal. A few service snags won't knock this place down to 4 stars for me, due to the quality of the food and genuine sweetness of the people that run this place. Coworkers and I picked up some lunch at Saffron today. We ordered online and they were ready with our food within 20-45 minutes, as promised. The food smelled so good in the car and we couldn't wait to eat it. I ordered samosas ($5 for 2 samosas) and saag paneer ($11). The flavor of the saag paneer was not quite there. It tasted like it was missing important spices and it did not taste like what saag paneer is supposed to taste like. My friend, who is Indian, said it didn't taste like saag paneer. It was also very soupy, rather than creamy. So that was a disappointment. But luckily the samosas were amazing. The samosas were very flavorful and had just the right amount of spices (flavor!), which the saag paneer was definitely lacking. Saffron is my go-to Indian spot (but I have to pickup :/). They stopped being on Eat 24, so sometimes I am lazy and go for the other Indian options, which have delivery but don't even compare (and I think 1 is meatless)... It's BYOB, so don't expect a drink while you're here unless you bring it. (Or you can do what I've done is order here, go over to Boulevard for a drink, and come back and food is ready to go!) They do have pick up order on Yelp, just not delivery anymore. Twin Liquors is also within walking distance, so you could grab a bottle of wine or a 6 pack. My favorite dish here is Saag Paneer ($11). Just as other dishes, can choose how spicy you want it. *Most entrees come with rice (have to note because at some places, this is not true. And their side rice is $2.50 so don't get an extra if it already comes with a side...) Chicken lollipops appetizer is awesome ($6) Chicken Tikka Masala ($13) isn't as great as other Indian places (in LA), but we still always get it anyway because it's a staple. Also, I think these guys are from OC (CA), if I remember correctly (Irvine maybe?). Garlic Naan ($3) fine but nothing to write about, but it's also always ordered Samosas ($4) fine..when you are feeling something fried, but it's not part of my typical order Nepalese pot stickers def something different than Chinese pot stickers. Jinga Angare jumbo shrimps marinated in cream and indian spices...sounded amazing and probably good...if you eat it there. I ordered to go and counted like 6 shrimp for $16 - I will not order again. We ordered appetizers - Kolonji Paneer Tikka and Vegetable Momos. Our order arrived quickly. Paneer tikka was bland, had no grilled taste. It was like steam cooked paneer in creamy sauce . The Nepalese eat vegetable momos was served with chutney, it was hot and delicious. I loved the saag paneer and garlic naan combo for the entree. The staff was polite, quick, and friendly. I was catching up with a friend for a couple hours and I think the lady came up and asked 4 times how many boxes we need after we told her time after time we're still eating. Saag Paneer is definitely my favorite, chicken tikka masala was okay, I actually prefer anther restaurant's. Garlic Naan was fresh and crispy, and the vegetable pakuras were amazing, lightly fried and super flavorful. The only thing we both hated was the "Mango Cheesecake". This is a review of the lunch buffet only. The spread is tiny for a buffet, but the quality is top notch. The chicken tikka masala was really flavorful, the curry chicken was a good creamy sauce, and the veggie options were good and interesting. This will definitely be the go to place when I want Indian food but don't want heart burn as the spicy heat level is at a zero. That said, I usually prefer a little more heat to my Indian food. It's a little more pricey than other Indian buffets in the area by about $2 so not a big deal alone but matters when paying for more people. read more

I want to preface this review by saying I am as close to a native Indian food eater as a non-Indian person can be. We got the Gobi Manchurian as an appetizer following many recommendations for this dish. We unfortunately couldn't understand what the hype was about. There was just nothing special to it - would not recommend. However, as entrees, we got the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Saffron Chicken Lazeez with a side of Saffron Naan. First off, with an appetizer, portion sizes are huge. We'll probably share an entree the next time we come.The two curries were really good and the rice was authentic. The star of the show though, was definitely the Saffron Naan. How can you get regular Naan when they have a Naan named after their store name. You MUST get this when you come. It's so unique with a slight sweet kick to it. Highly highly recommend. Overall, the Indian food scene in Austin is pretty limited, but Saffron is definitely one of the more authentic ones. read more

I would have never noticed Saffron if I hadn't found it on Yelp-it's in a very basic strip mall. Casual atmosphere and friendly staff. Doesn't seem like it gets too busy, but steady. We tried the samosas, which I have had better elsewhere. Not bad, but they didn't stand out/have as much flavor. The saffron naan was very interesting--I wasn't expecting the filling to be sweet! I recommend giving it a try, but don't expect it to be like regular naan. I got the Vegetable MoMo and really liked them--veggie dumplings. My husband got Chicken Tikka Masala and enjoyed it as well. Went for the lunch buffet on a quiet Thursday at noon. As vegetarian selections, the buffet had saag paneer, paneer makhani, mix veg curry, and dal, along with naan and white rice, and a good selection of salad veggies. The curries were all made just right; none of them was overly spicy or oily. The naan wasn't hot when I got it; it would have been nice for the staff to bring hot naan (or roti) to the table instead of piling up naan in the buffet basket. The only dessert was kheer which I did not try. Service was friendly and pleasant. I'll return for an a la carte dinner sometime, since a friend suggested that they have better options on their dinner menu. Recommended. read more
