Safeway offers 8 pieces of prepared chicken, either fried or roasted, on Mondays for $6.99. Therefore, one should be able to purchase a whole chicken in pieces: two breasts,two wings, two thighs, and two drumsticks at the sale price. Posted hours for this special run until 7 pm. I stopped in at 6:05 pm last Monday and found that they only had thighs and wings. I was told that if I wanted more than two wings, I would be charged extra for reasons which were not clear. Eight pieces is eight pieces. If they are out of some of those pieces, one would expect to be able to substitute pieces they have for pieces which are sold out. I believe that the chicken cooking staff wanted to be able to begin their clean up processes early, so they could go home, and therefore refused to cook more, even though there was close to an hour before the end of the advertised special price. This seems very clearly to be a bait and switch situation, to put it kindly. I don't think it was store policy to stop preparing chicken early. I attribute it to lazy, uncaring staff. If they don't want to do their jobs an cook chicken, they should seek employment elsewhere. In the future, if I find them to be out of any of the chicken pieces, I will request a raincheck, so that I may come in at another time, on another day, at my convenience to buy the chicken that I, as a consumer, protected by law am entitled to. read more

I prefer not to wait a very long line with the cashier where people are trying to make deals as they may not have enough money on their card they have people running back to get items holding up the line I would prefer the self check out to stay self check out. read more

I like that this Safeway is open until midnight. When it gets really late, grocery stores that are open become more limited. I realized the night before an event that I should pack some snacks, so I came here. When I arrived, I was flooded with memories of coming here frequently about a year and a half ago. I was really surprised at how much it has changed since then. It appears there were some renovations at the entrance. I came in for snacks, and left with a cart full of groceries. I really enjoyed that I could fulfill all of my households needs because they have pretty much everything we needed. Even better, I enjoyed that the fruits and vegetables looked so fresh and were affordable. I found items that are hard to find in other grocery stores like the coconut that comes with a straw. It's my favorite way to drink coconut water, fresh from a real coconut. They just made it easy to consume. This store is big with plenty of options for everything you need. I called to ask them to clean it up and the manager said "that's a shared dumpster" and hung up on me. It's hard enough keeping rodents and bugs away when you live near a supermarket. For years this Safeway existed in Hill East with a large parking lot, a rarity in the city. After a two-year renovation/demolition, Safeway reopened on the bottom floor of a condo building with an underground parking garage. Here are the new features of the new Safeway: 1) Size- it's HUGE! There are multiple entry points that take you into the front of the store where you'll get a sense of the size. The ceilings are high making it feel even bigger. 2) Amenities- there are many touches to this Safeway from a huge produce section to a cheese stand, gourmet popcorn stand, expensive wine walk-in cooler, a pharmacy and a Starbucks in the front of the store. 3) Checkout: There are many aisles to check out from including over a dozen self-check-out lanes. 4) Options: They have many more products now from allulose (zero-calorie sweetener) to hard cider to meats. Each section is well marked with signs. For example, in the dairy section they note the plant-based products. This Safeway is worth visiting and will be a popular spot in Hill East especially with a little inside cafe area with seating and an outdoor patio. read more

It is your typical large chain grocery store. The selection is pretty good, not incredible but good. The prices are about average - Trader Joe's and Aldi are cheaper but Whole Foods and Harris Teeter are more expensive. If you use the Safeway app you get coupons and whatnot to make it cheaper. The store was renovated a few years ago so it is pretty nice. The lack of carts that people complain about is real, it can be challenging to find a cart sometimes. The staff are fine, not wonderful but not terrible either. If you are looking for a five-star gourmet grocery store this isn't it, but it's a step up from the no frills budget places. read more

I would imagine that being a grocery delivery contractor is a side hustle for so many people. And I feel because this is not their primary source of income they lack commitment to perform their jobs with pride and integrity. My groceries were delivered by a very small and dainty female who arrived at my house thinking she should get help bring my groceries up to my front porch. So she called my cell phone demanding who is going to help with these groceries. She didn't wait to confront me face to face. My reply was I am not going to help because I am 81 years old. This is the reason why I order my groceries online. If you can't do the job or if you don't want to handled that many grocery bags why are you delivering groceries. Because I wouldn't assist this small dainty female she left my groceries at the bottom of my steps and on the concrete pavement while it was beginning to rain. She stayed parked in front of my house while I struggled to bring each bag up the steps. The windows to her car were tinted so I couldn't see what she was actually doing. But it almost appeared like she was waiting for me to do something stupid so she could video record my actions on her phone. I am almost positive she was recording me while I was doing her job bringing my groceries unto my porch. In between bringing the groceries on the porch I was also trying to contact Safeway Customer Service but unable to get through. The recording repeated it's message over and over not responding when I selected #8 on the key pad for Customer Service. I finally gave up and later that day after calming down was able to file a complaint with Customer Service. In my observation the female delivery people are looking for help from customers because of their gender. Maybe male customer jump at the opportunity to help because they are trying to connect on a personal level (hookup). The bottom line if you can't or don't want to do the job why don't you find work more suitable to your lazy work habits. The delivery service is not free the delivery driver's tip is calculated according to the total amount of groceries purchased. I feel Safeway should be more selective in who they partner with to deliver their product. Due to my frustration and anger. I stooped to her level and I had some very choice words for her. read more

Safeway on 14th Street SE has a great selection of prepared foods, fresh produce, seafood, meats, baked items, can goods, etc, but poor customer service. I like accessing snd using the Safeway App. Using the app in the store an SOS appears with no bars. Of course you could use the free Safeway wifi if you do not know or do not care about cybersecurity and privacy. If you have a bank or credit card App using wifi is a receipe for abuse. Unfortunately, if you want the best sales price under the Safeway loyalty program you need to get digital coupons only available on the app. You cannot easily exit the store or get to a window where wireless reception is better because of the cattle management system used to control customer entry and exit from the store. Not a good experience. I stopped shopping here and went to other stores. Today, I saw some items on the App I wanted and was reminded while shopping and saw other sales items why I had not been in this store for a few months. Very unpleasant experience. read more

I had a delivery order totaling $460.86. I ordered through the Safeway app, apparently they use door dash. They gave the wrong orders to the drivers and the only way I know that they did that was the driver contacting me. The manager denied it, but it was painfully obvious that's what happened. I never received my order and the manager was no help, told me I had to contact door dash. Again, Safeway had my money not DoorDash, if there was a problem with them, he should have contacted DoorDash. Well a week later I still hadn't received a refund. I had to call corporate today and threaten to sue to get my refund and they still shorted my $0.55. Done with Safeway and Albertsons all together. Never going through that nightmare again. read more

This new Safeway is SOOO nice. A huge contrast from the one closest to me. The store is 24 hours, incredibly bright has a full liquor, wine and beer selection. The deli and hot food area is pretty extensive with folks who are patient and helpful when trying to make decisions. They have an assortment of products with varying price points. You can find your organic foods, those that are sustainably sourced or conventional items. It's really a one stop shop which I LOVE! I've never seen the check out lines really long and they do a decent job providing customers with sanitizer and wipes for carts. The staff has always been helpful and professional. There's ample parking in the garage and they offer curbside pick-up!! I know this location is new...but I hope they keep up the cleanliness and overall niceness of this store. read more

I came in here because I was working nearby and it was closest place that I could find that I know sells awesome tuna fish foot long sandwiches. I really had no clue that this store even existed in this part of town, and zi was happy to find it online and see that they are open until midnight. I actually had not eaten since 8:30am this morning and my stomach was screaming with hunger pains at right around 7:45pm when I arrived. I went straight to the deli section which is where they usually have ready made sandwiches on display. They had at least six tuna sandwiches wrapped up and ready to go. I picked one up and realized right away that this sandwich was definitely more than the typical weight. This made me happy. The is location must be fairly new because the have a dining section and a Starbucks right inside the store. I found an empty spot in the dining section which is where I'm writing this review. I have a theory on grocery stores in Capitol Hill. When a new grocery store opens, it is shiny and new and well-stocked with good customer service. Then, over time, quality descends, stock becomes poor, customer service becomes rude. Eventually, what was once a nice new store begins to suck, and someone opens a new store. And the cycle begins again. I've seen this for 20+ years now. This Safeway was shiny and awesome when it opened, but it has begun its descent. Customer service has gotten worse, stock is often low. On a recent Saturday afternoon, I arrived to find no shopping carts available. Along with several other customers, I waited at the entrance for others to return their carts. When it was finally my turn to claim a cart being returned, a Safeway employee snatched it first. I told her I had been waiting for a cart, but she mumbled something about needing it for milk and continued to walk away. I went to the manager and also received a mumbling response. Several problems here. First, you're out of carts? It wasn't even that busy. Second, if you're out of carts during the day, you FIX that by having someone round them up from the parking lot. Third, if you can't do that, you LET THE CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE BEEN WAITING have the carts. Anyway, I went back to Harris Teeter -- it has already undergone the full Capitol Hill grocery store quality cycle and isn't very good either. But since no one goes there anymore, at least I get in and out more quickly. And stock seems to have improved somewhat there. read more

The grocery store was pretty good for about a year when it reopened after the new building was completed. Fully stocked and reasonably staffed. I was really impressed by their expansive wine selection and by the breadth of the liquor offerings. The assortment of cheeses was outstanding too. Today the entrance is dirty, trash cans over flowing, rarely are there ever any shopping carts, never any baskets. Only 2 or 3 of the 7 registers are open with customers filing into the aisles as they wait to be checked out, and crazy long lines at self check out - where most of those machines have blinking lights indicating they are waiting for someone to fix the scanner or perform age verification. Did I mention that you have to go to customer service to have someone to go to the back to fetch bar soap from the stockroom? There's never any on the shelf because people steal it. read more

They don't have anywhere near enough carts for a store this size, so you get to compete against other shoppers wandering around the parking garage asking strangers if they're done with that cart before you go in. It has been like this for over a year now, don't expect it to change. Otherwise, this is a perfectly good store. Staff are nice, decent selection, good prices. All good if you're just running in for a handful of things, but if you need a grocery cart to buy a bunch of stuff, either go when nobody else is shopping or go to Giant. read more

Seriously, is it really possible to like a Safeway store in this day & age? Well, it is. The Capitol Hill location is terrific; freshly shucked oysters? Check. Nuts on Clark? Check. Gorgeous & tasty cakes? Check-check. Poutine? Yes, check. The aisles are wide and brightly lit and their produce is high quality. I am not a huge fan of the staff though, which is preventing that fifth store. Most of them are your typical grumpy and unhelpful Safeway employees. There is one standout in the bakery and I wish I knew her name; she's extremely pleasant and has lots of ideas/suggestions for cakes, if you need them. Definitely a great update/addition. Now if they could get the same people to redesign Soviet Safeway in Dupont. read more

I lived near this Safeway before it was torn down and rebuilt, and I must say that the newer one is so much better! Not only is it larger with a wider selection of products, but it's also well-staffed and has a self checkout section. I've always been able to find what I need in here and have had pleasant encounters with the employees. I really wish I could give 0 stars my god! This place is a mess..today I went to this store to buy a few ingredients for tacos I was told by a worker in the popcorn department to head over to the wine section and I could check out there without having to stand in the super long lines. I had maybe 10 items in my cart headed over to the wine section and immediately was told I could not bring my cart inside , or check out because I didn't have five items or less. All of which was fine until I noticed a Safeway worker checking out her groceries which btw was at least 20 items! And her entire cart was inside of the same space the cashier told me I was not allowed to pull my cart into. I believe her name was Patricia..I became Extremely aggravated because the hypocrisy was out of this world! Don't get me wrong I get it she was helping her coworker out BUT she was helping her do the exact thing she refused to do for customers who could clearly see this transaction. read more

Most of workers or desk managers are apathetical, or have little or no training in customer service. I've seen the security guards ON THE SIDE OF THE STORE IN UNIFORM openly smoking weed while on the phone. Other than Quaker chocolate rice cakes, they never have what I'm looking for. The produce is mediocre, and they rarely have shopping carts available (they allow the customers to leave the premise with them and they're scattered throughout the neighborhood). This store sells molded tomatoes, and is making bank screwing customers over by marking up prices online, and then again when they give much cheaper/wrong items while claiming the original items are not available. Proof is that we placed an online order today, and I went to the store to purchase the same items to see what the difference would be -- online cost was $77, in person cost was $44. Some staff are very helpful and take care to make their area clean, are courteous and friendly... (Yay for them!) A few are cranky and not helpful (acting as though they are annoyed if you make a simple request.) Lately the area outside of the store has become fairly disgusting, with trash all over the place, overflowing trash receptacles (which attract rats -- I saw two across the street from the store this morning.) This is a significant change from when the store opened two years ago. (I know the trash comes from unthinking customers and passersby, but the management should assign someone to clean the area a few times a day -- and not leave food outside to attract rodents.) On a recent vacation to D.C. we stopped in to buy a few items. The store had under ground parking. We checked with cashier how we validated after purchasing 33.00 dollars of groceries. She wasn't helpful we went back downstairs hopefully to validate our slip. Luckily a customer told us where the scanner was and told us associates aren't helpful at checkouts. However the young lady in deli was very sweet. If I lived there I wouldn't shop your stores didn't feel welcomed. I was in retail 24 years and that area of your store needs help. read more

I usually have a pleasant experience at this locations, but today I felt as if there was no sense of customer service nor humanity. Upon walking up to the self checkout the employee in that area walks right up to my cart and starts pointing and counting items. Before she even finishes she says "Nope! More than 15 go over there," and points to the cashiers. Mind you there are multiple people in line and what looks like only one person working. I explain to her that the "policy" she is stating really isn't a policy it's a suggestion due to the amount of thefts from the location and that since there isn't an actual number on what you can checkout there then I was going to continue to use the service that was available for my convenience. It was at this point I could hear her talking loudly to a person who didn't state they were a manager but seemed to try and carry himself in such a way. He then told me that I would need to go over there next time, which I then explained to him the same way. While I was checking my items out the same lady from the beginning then sits at the self checkout to my left and proceeds to watch me scan my items. No harm in this, but what it does create is a bad environment for a person to shop in. Not only this, but I didn't feel comfortable, safe, or privacy. It seemed as if I was being watched like I had committed a crime, which again a terrible feeling to have while shopping. After spending over $100 on my things I then proceeded to exit and scan my receipt, but not before I hear her smack her lips and say "Don't bring ya ass back here with that," to which I laughed and shrugged it off. The bad thing is that the so called manager on duty didn't reprimand or try and make up for his rude employee's behavior or lack there of. I will also be posting this to google and a few other sites until I hear back that something has been done to not only mend my relationship with this particular location, but to make sure that no other person has to deal with this kind of issue. read more
