COVID vaccination location inside the store
    Chris C.

This is a much larger Giant than the one in my neighborhood.  Interior is much more spacious with very wide aisles good for distancing.  Big parking lot with plenty of parking spaces.  This is also one of the main vaccine sites in SE.  Came here twice when giving rides to people with vaccination appointments. The vaccine location in the bright "wellness space" room just inside the grocery store entrance. Appointments are well organized so never much of a line.  After the vaccination there is a big area in front of the vaccination room with spaced apart chairs for people to sit on and wait out the required 15 minutes for safety before leaving.

In a ward with limited grocery store options, this Giant is a much needed addition to Congress Heights and it comes with a large parking lot (free parking in DC is a rare thing). It's usually full of people shopping no matter when you go, so factor 15 minutes or so to check out. Other than that, it's a normal grocery store with a produce aisle, greeting card aisle, and even a pharmacy (there's usually line there too). Note there is no Starbucks inside.

I can honestly say I have had no problems finding what I need at this Giant. The seafood section is always stocked as well.

Ive even experienced better GIANT grocery stores. This is what happens when you have 1 large grocery store in pretty much a food desert.

The produce is never fresh. They never have enough registers open. This grocery store needs to go under new management.

It really has to be something to get me to write a review. I have had more than a few incidents at…read morethis Giant. Unfortunately I have become accustomed to receiving subpar service/quality here so I've mostly ignored them. Most of the incidents revolve around lack of items, quality of items in some situations, store upkeep and customer service. I am of the belief that this is due to where this Giant is located. It is clear that this Giant and many nearby stores don't respect the customer base in this area. They don't seem to fear any retribution for the treatment of the people who patronize this store. We, as customers, are paying the same prices but receiving discount quality and service compared to customers at the same chain in different neighborhoods. The two incidents I've had involve one person. I didn't get the name but it was a middle aged white woman. I believe she was a manager of some kind. The only reason I'm distinguishing her race is because she may be the only white person working in that store as this is a predominantly Black American area. First incident: I was in line and ready to checkout in one of the 12 items or less registers. I was moving up in a line I was in for more than a few minutes (lines are consistently long) by now when the person in question came up and says, "this line is for 12 items or fewer". I look down at my cart and begin to count my items. I had 16 items. I just looked at her with bewilderment and moved to another much longer line (I wonder how corporate would feel if I put 4 items back costing the store money because one of their employees strict enforcement of FOUR extra items in my cart?) Trust me I totally understand adhering to policy and not slowing up the line for people trying to get in and out but this seemed a little excessive. On its own, this was not enough to illicit a response or review but the next incident raised my ire enough to report. Second incident: This incident maybe happened some four to five months later involving the same person. This time I'm checking out my items engaging in friendly banter with the cashier when the person in question comes up to the cashier, whispers in her ear then leaves. I didn't think anything of it until the cashier tells me she told her not to forget the water under my cart. At that point I had already told the cashier and she acknowledged. She looked uncomfortable telling me what she said. I told her that it was insulting to assume I'm trying to sneak out with a 32 pack of water. I don't really care about the excuse that this happens at this store. I'm sure water is paid for at a much higher clip than it is stolen. I didn't see where she came from but apparently, judging from both incidents, she is also a line monitor of some sort. Literally policing people as they're checking out. I almost wanted to take all the food back but continued. I don't think she is even aware or cares how insulting and disrespectful this is to customers. That is not my local Giant food store. I only go there when shopping for my mom who lives on that side of town. Luckily my mom doesn't request to go to this store much anymore because of the prices and I am totally fine with it. I had these two incidents during my sparse visits. I can only imagine the treatment regular customers receive.

I looked around, saw an employee wearing a name tag, and I raised my hand. The women slowly walked over. I looked her in the face and I said, "Hi. How are you?" She said, "Yes? " I repeated the question. I said, "How are you?" She said, " How can I help you?" I paused because her blank expression and lack of listening was not present. Her name started with a C and ended in a B. I didn't have my glasses on today, but she had hers on. She wore braids and a gold earring. But I experienced a tired and upset woman at work. I wish her well.

They are extremely insensitive, unempathetic and highly disrespectful to people with obvious disabilities and special needs. Also, the items sold at this store are second hand goods that they purchased from larger retailers and mark up the prices in order to make a profit. Their items are low quality and sometimes past expiration date. If you try to complain or question about an item, they become annoyed and begin yelling at you for no reason. The outside of the store is always being loitered by shady characters making it somewhat dangerous to even want to shop there. People have been killed (either by gun violence or stabbing) inside and outside of this store in the past numerous times. This rip-off spot lacks safety, professionalism, good quality products and upstanding people/staff. Do yourself a favor and walk an extra couple of blocks to a major retailer, this place has an all around bad aura/vibe to it.
