This location isn't one I normally visit. It was near a doctor's office. I had some concerns about the neighborhood, even in broad daylight. There was a police car monitoring the parking lot. There were guards by both entrances. They were very polite and great at interacting with youths. The store has a decent selection of items, except over the counter medications and some toiletry items. I think it is intentional for theft prevention. The self check out area had the least amount of customers. The employees were helpful when I needed assistance. read more

I see why there are 2 stars across the board for this store. There were 2 full service checkouts open and they were 20+ people deep with full shopping carts. Although the store was brightly lit and many of the aisles well stocked; it was very understaffed. The store is located in a busy community that obviously supports this place but there are not enough staffers here to move the customers through. I came here because I was in the area but, I don't think I will be back anytime soon. read more

Giant - Very long line for self checkout - Grocery Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

I always receive such good service here. The staff is usually very helpful. Tracey went out of her way to find me something I was looking for that I couldn't find it on my own. Ms Bunny is always friendly and welcoming. Just be aware of your surroundings. They do have security and police around the clock to make it a bit safer though. read more

This is a much larger Giant than the one in my neighborhood.  Interior is much more spacious with very wide aisles good for distancing.  Big parking lot with plenty of parking spaces.  This is also one of the main vaccine sites in SE.  Came here twice when giving rides to people with vaccination appointments. The vaccine location in the bright "wellness space" room just inside the grocery store entrance. Appointments are well organized so never much of a line.  After the vaccination there is a big area in front of the vaccination room with spaced apart chairs for people to sit on and wait out the required 15 minutes for safety before leaving. read more

This place is so ghetto. The entire grocery store stinks of weed and the shelves are ransacked. Medicine isle didn't have anything at all. Meat isles empty... people are rude and loud for no reason. I wish I took a picture of how sad this place is read more

In a ward with limited grocery store options, this Giant is a much needed addition to Congress Heights and it comes with a large parking lot (free parking in DC is a rare thing). It's usually full of people shopping no matter when you go, so factor 15 minutes or so to check out. Other than that, it's a normal grocery store with a produce aisle, greeting card aisle, and even a pharmacy (there's usually line there too). Note there is no Starbucks inside. read more

Peaceful Sunday to whom ever will read this. There needs to be workshops training something as to etiquette in reference to customer service, hygiene all that goes into making someone want to frequent the establishment. I stopped by the deli who ever switched shifts walked away much to my dismay I waited what happened next threw me the attendant tied his hair up facing me readjusted the hair put on gloves then packaged up my request being in customer service and several industries over the years there was a time when you worked over food first you hair had to be covered!!! That's neither here nor there at this point. To not wash the hands sanitize or anything just put on the gloves smh. Where has protocols gone!!!!!! Yes I took it and placed it in a cooler the whole ordeal took me by surprise. I'm 55 years old working since 14 the times have changed sooo bad makes you not even want to frequent businesses that allow such behavior. Let's do better in recovering customer service with a STANDARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

If there was another grocery store within a decent distance of my job I would NEVER come here. The prices are high and the product quality is poor. Combine that with terrible customer service and you have a recipe for disaster. I went to pick up some soup for lunch and a package of herbal tea. The soup station was out of medium bowls. When I asked for them at the deli, the staff member tried to get me assistance but was ignored 3 times before someone acknowledged him. They were completely out of the medium bowls. I took a small soup, a loaf of french bread, a package of dried cranberries and a box of team. These for items totaled almost $18. Ridiculous! Giant do better! read more

Giant - Grocery Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

The pharmacy on Alabama Avenue SE never have your pharmacy ready. A call in refill on Thursday should be ready Saturday when you go there to pick t up. Also the young cashier name Cheree is so RUDE. She really need to be trained how to treat and talk to customers. No one should have to experience the disrespect that she was given to me. I will be looking for another pharmacy. read more

Ever need your medicine TODAY? DONT SEND IT TO THIS GIANT PHARMACY‼ The ppl there are just on the clock consuming your insurance information. My sons dr sent off his prescription around 3. After giving it hours to be ready I proceed to this raggedy giant at 6:30pm to stand in line for 30 mins just for them to tell me they don't have it scoot over to the side. 5 mins later the MANAGER takes my personal number and tells me it'll be an hour wait she'll call me back. Take a wild guess if she called back?? I wouldn't be writing this review. Meanwhile my sons need his ointment expeditiously ‼ read more

Giant should be ashamed of themselves. The smell was horrible and made my friend gag. The fruits and veggies are old. Healthy food options limited. We left so I can't speak to the pricing. Now ironically if you go across the river to a giant, their fruit looks just fine. As far as I'm concerned this area is still in a food dessert. read more

I opted for ordering groceries through their app and then picking them up at the store and was severely disappointed. They were out of 6-7 items that I ordered, which I understand can happen but did mean that I still had to go to another grocery store to obtain those items. If this were the only issue I had, it honestly would not have been that big of a deal. However, once I got home, I realized that I was missing 10-15 items totaling over $50. I actually just realized I'm still missing avocados. Thus, I had to go back to the store to Customer Service where an attendant brought me my missing bags. The idea behind grocery pick-up is to save both time and minimize in-person interaction. Unfortunately, Giant's grocery pick-up was not successful at achieving either. Also, it would have been helpful to have directions about where to go to wait for pick-up in the confirmation email, as the garage is relatively dark and the signs are not super obvious. I'll be sticking with Amazon from now on. read more

It's so bad its funny!!!!!!!!! The shopping carts lock up all the time. They have a mechanism on the wheels and it only goes so far because they get stolen I guess. But I've been working outside the store(not gonna say what I do) and the carts lock up almost as soon as you leave the store. There is only one person who can unlock them!!! So pathetic. This is a ghetto are in DC and people get very angry when they lock up and have to waite until someone can unlock the wheels so you have to carry all your groceries the rest of the way!!!! Lol. I would be irate if I had to shop here!!! I've seen sooo many carts lock up all day today and had to post this. It's a real customer service issue!!!! SHAME ON GIANT read more

Dominique (male) needs to find something that makes.him happy. My mom stood in his line she was really polite as usual. Greeting him, and thanking him several times. She finally thanked him again and said have a nice day. This young man never looked up, or said a word. He rolled his eyes when I popped up with a frozen package of peas we forgot to ring up. Slamming my things down that's the eye contact we got. He was upset. So after shoving change in our hands he still didn't respond to her her saying thank you young man. I dont know what's up with the people here but all of them are rude. Ward 8 deserves a little more respect. They are over priced and rude for the most part. This why I'm willing to go to whole foods in foggy bottom. read more

Well, this Giant grocery store is brand spankin' new. I think it's been open maybe 2 months. Therefore, everything is still nice and sparkly, the shelves are super well stocked, the place is clean, and the employees are friendly. It also has a very nice hot/prepared foods section with lots of food choices- healthy, and the yummy-but not healthy. My friends who live here, that I bunk with when I'm in town, say that It's nice to finally have a grocery store in the heart of the (neighbor)HOOD. read more

"First things first," I like that it has Self-Checkout. I think I've developed good technique when it comes to looking up the 4 digit codes, weighing items and everything expeditiously. If I am here, I am only getting something simple because it can be crowded. I like that it has a parking lot but so does the Safeway down the street which I hate. I am one of many that just wishes I didn't have to cross Southern Ave. or the Anacostia for my regular grocery purchases. I do like the local items section. I see things I want to try out. Nothing major, just a small endcap I've stumbled upon a few times. p.d. Why the Self-Checkout machines got to be so loud?!?! read more

One dusty, flickering star for this Giant. Cleanliness - The store is clean, but giving a grocery store kudos for being clean is like getting points on a test for correctly spelling your own name. Of course it should be clean, this is where I get my food! Luckily, I've never seen moldy produce or signs of vermin, so there's that. Selection - You won't find ground lamb or your favorite brand of tahini. We're back to basics here. Green produce, apples, and bags of onions aren't bad, but meats leave something to be desired. I refuse to buy any meat outside of chicken wings. Fresh fish... no. But the snack aisle is amazing, and really wide. If you're about that snack-soda life, this Giant is your mecca. Patrons - This is the fun part ((sarcasm)). For some reason, patrons of this Giant tend to shop in packs. You rarely see folks shopping solo, so this means packed aisles, reaching over heads to grab items from shelves, and long-ass lines. I've found the best time to shop is around 5 pm on a Saturday. The worst time to shop is around the 1st of the month or after 5 during the week. Cashiers - For some reason, each cashier's lane says "12 items or less", which is really confusing. Cashiers are usually polite, albeit slow. I'm not sure if it's the cashiers' fault or just the volume of customers this location gets. I'd rather go to Harris Teeter or Costco than to suffer this Giant. If the lines were shorter, maybe this location would be bearable. read more

I was thoroughly disappointed by the meat selection. There is no way that I am going to buy oxtail for $8 when there are only 3 pieces in there with not enough meat on the bones to be considered as a snack! Okay maybe I exaggerated the price but I just moved to DC from ATL and apparently Walmart in Atlanta has spoiled me into a cheap brat because I couldn't bring myself to purchase ANY meat they had out on display! Their pack of chicken legs was around $20-23 where in Walmart that same size would've only been $11! I can't, I won't, I shan't! Other than that the store was clean and the lines were LONG because the cashiers were a tad bit slow. read more

I rarely go grocery shopping, but when I do this is my closest option. I have a Giant Card so that's helpful to save me money. The store itself is uber busy, lots of folks and activity at the store. They have a RedBox which I used to frequent before I got my cable situation in order...lol. The store itself is clean, and they have never not had what I needed on the shelf. I always forget to bring my own bag, argh! The lines are kind of long, I'm always going to the store on Saturday's like a dummy. If I have a few things I'll check myself out, but someone always seems to stand too close behind me. Back up ma'am/sir Geez! It's nice and convenient to have a grocery store that is right down the street from me. read more

I can honestly say I have had no problems finding what I need at this Giant. The seafood section is always stocked as well.

No so good experience yesterday in the hot food section, to get fried fish. The young man that waited on me was not following food handling procedures. He was flipping through a book, pulling up his pants and then touched the fish w/o gloves on. When I asked him if he was going to wash his hands and put gloves on, he was "What ever". I have chosen not to use this service at this store. read more

Debra was my cashier at register number 12 and she needs a refresher course in customer service. Giant has a coupon for $1.00 off name your item and Debra kept telling me the coupon didn't work although after I asked to enter my number the coupon went through as a cashier you should prompt the customer to enter their number. At the end of my encounter Debra proceeds to eat at the checkout line when Ruth, another Giant employee walked up and began engaging Debra in a conversation while she should have been bagging my items. Debra and Ruth are a bad combination for Giant. read more

By far the worst grocery store I have ever been in. Lack of motivation in the employees which means poor customer service. Ive even experienced better GIANT grocery stores. This is what happens when you have 1 large grocery store in pretty much a food desert.

When Customer Service is great, you tend to ignore the distractions around you.. I just wanted to brag a little about my experience at the Giant on Alabama Ave SE. I started ( the vibe) off by saying Hello to the Cashier ( days are long, ppl just want to be recognized as more than a "Cashier" I know I did when I worked as one. So ,me being me,I casually started talking about food related stuff. Ms.Bunny (Cashier) and I started talking about what we like in our Oatmeal. She recommended a Cereal that she loves and I JUST SO Happen TO LOVE IT TOO #twinsies(Raisin Bran Crunch). We talked about Raisins,Almonds and all types of good stuff!! It was so fun Michelle was a ray of sunshine as well! They truly worked as a Team and showed exemplary Customer Service. They were patient, polite and made my visit one of the best ever in the MANY years that I've shopped there. Bring the energy you want in return, change the atmosphere. We have the Magic,we just have to use it. Sure it could've went different but it didn't and because of that,I celebrate these two women. #longpost #goodvibes #Ward8 #lawofattraction Thank You for the return of Good Vibes . #PostMoreComplimentsAndLessComplaints read more

CON- let me start with the one con. GIANT grocery is more expensive than most others (except boutique groceries like Whole Foods). That means ALL the GIANTS- not just this one. Shop sales and clip coupons to offset this. You can absolutely get the basics and more without going broke. PROS- this supermarket is in a very under served area. We all relied on the Safeway much farther up Alabama Ave . I like the Safeway, but it was tough. This Giant has the upscale look of that you would see in any other Giant. The staff keep the Giant clean and they are very pleasant. This can be tough at times with the customer base. Most people don't understand what the so-called "hood" is. Simplified, it is a regular working class to lower middle class neighborhood that has been used to house (dump) low income, unstable, or government dependent people in for decades. The result for places like this Giant is this: they get tons of appreciative, decent, hard working normal customers who are willing to spend a little bit more for meat or seafood and organic soy and rice milk. But they also get bunches of kids coming into the store to shoplift and loiter for 45minutes or more, with $4 in their pockets and a thin story about being there to buy chips. Very often these kids are under 12 years old and watching much younger kids (toddlers). No parents are present. I have been in this Giant when kids 12 and under are basically playing in the store at 9 or 10pm. This is a common sight and the staff and security handle it with sensitivity and with clear eyed caution. There is a seating/eating area where men often teach and play chess with kids. There is no loitering snobbery here- within reason (something upscale or gentrifying areas make the mistake of over doing). In general, just know that this is a clean, nice looking store that sells jumbo bags of chicken wings and cheap beer- along with lobster, vegetarian or gluten free products and sea weed wraps (for making certain types of sushi rolls. ****ON THE FIRST OF THE MONTH!!-Expect to see people (customers) who are too loud. Expect to see the store at its dirtiest. You will see lots of Styrofoam cartoons left overs from eaten food (there is a hot bar and these people fill the cartoons, eat the food in the aisles, then toss the cartoons elsewhere without paying). You will see ice cream in the detergent aisle, and pork chops sitting on toilet paper. But, you will also hear the regular intercom call for staff to do sweeps and re shelving. You will see security ( the ones you CAN see) standing post without overdoing. The staff at the Alabama Ave Giant know the community they serve and they are HANDLIN' THEIR BUSINESS- WELL!! read more

The produce is never fresh. They never have enough registers open. This grocery store needs to go under new management.

This is the cleanest and most well stocked (normal) grocery store I have been to in Washington, DC. The staff are great, and always say hello and greet you. The staff are also careful and packing your stuff. There is a lot of variety on the shelves, lots of parking, and the store is clean with a nice relaxing vibe to it. The checkouts can get pretty slow at peak times, and the international section is a little lacking, but these are my only complaints. I have been very please and slightly surprised by the good quality of service here. Great stuff. read more
