The Grocery delivery section is terrible. I ordered groceries and I selected an early delivery but they were unable to fill my order. So they called and asked me to pick a later time and I did my order was left at the store with no one to deliver it. I called and I was told I should call door dash and arrange for them to pick it up. I will never in my life use their online site again to order I will pay extra to not deal with their crap. And their food is always second hand they can do better for the people that live in this area read more

I often find myself a last minute shopper and this location is always busy . Needless to say the employees understandably are ready to go home . Feeling rushed and frustrated the clerk was so patient and professional Khalyle and Linda really impressed me . For all the bad rap this Safeway gets, I was blown away when I visited in November 2017. I think I got lucky and went after a complete revamp, but the stories of rotting produce and rats running across the floor seem like distant folklore. Here's what I saw: 1) Cleanliness- the floors were clean. The produce looked clean. Even the Starbucks inside looked clean and tidy. 2) Well stocked- On a Monday, everything was well stocked and organized well. 3) Friendly staff- the check out lines may be a little slow, but the staff is friendly. I had the worst experience at this Pharmacy!!! The Staff was rude and they treat everyone as though they are ignorant. After asking for my two prescriptions and being told that they were already picked up? The Pharmacy gave my prescription to the wrong person with the same name. This is a HIPPA violation and they asked name and date of birth and still made this mistake as apparently it wasn't either done with the other person or they did not check carefully the information on all of the bottles prior to giving it to the wrong person! Furthermore, I am a Nurse and this Technician tried to justify their mistake! Unbelievable!!! They offered no solution but to call the other person to bring it back? They are not supposed to dispense any medication that has left the store and any alterations could have been made by a possible disgruntled person! I asked for the name of the supervising Pharmacist and was offered a first name? Why wouldn't I be provided with a full name and phone number? Hello! Safeway I wanted to pay a complement to an employee of the pharmacist department, pharmacist Tyra Mallory, she did something that I was not expecting. I was at the hospital and my doctor called in a prescription for enoxaparin sodium 120 MG. The doctor apparently wrote the prescription incorrectly, the pharmacist Ms Mallory call me to explain the issue and it was about 7:52pm she told me it needed to get taken care of before 8pm and I was preparing for ultrasound...long story short, I was able to give her a number to call the Doctor Who had left... before she spoke to another doctor the phone drop, then no answer, she was determine to take care of this, she finally managed to get the doctor to rewrite the prescription and I was able to pick up my medicine the following day... as far as I'm concerned as a customer...pharmacist Tyra Mallony went beyond the call of duty. if she hadn't done what she did I would not have been released from the hospital that night...excellent customer service fives STARS. ***** read more

I agree with all of the horrible comments below. The ONLY THING saving this store is that they have a pretty decent wine selection, believe it or not. I've sent my comments through the Safeway website also. My next step is to contact the corporate office. I've only lived in that neighborhood since 2007. Around that time, the store had been renovated and looked good. Now? The store is CONSISTENTLY filthy, there are never any hand baskets available and on a REGULAR basis there aren't enough cashiers. With all of the people looking for work, I'm SURE that they can find people to hire! It's very sad that this is the grocery store available. Where is the negative stars! I have been in D.C. for three weeks and learned unfortunately this is my "local" grocery store within distance for a person without a car - fail. From the front door, through the aisles and up to the VERY LMITED amount of registers this has to be thee worse grocer in history. Why is there always a smell of angst in the air, who are there 4 security guards (hint hint*) and WTH is there no self check-out or more cash registers opened? The staff was friendly and helpful but there were not enough cashiers to handle the customers. So I walked into the store and there were no customers anywhere except waiting in the 2 cashier lines that were checking out people. There were at least 60 people in the 2 open lines. I hope that Safeway is listening as if this happens again I'm not going to continue shopping there. read more

Where do I begin! I hate this place, I always feel like someone is torturing me when I enter this store! A lot of the staff is friendly, if you can find them. They are WAY understaffed. I won't address the "ghettoness' of the clientele. I mean damn...just cause you live in 'soufeast' you don't have to act like a hoodrat. Take pride in your hood, but that's another topic outside of Yelp. Moving on...one thing I can say is that the produce section is always clean and often times fresh. Now, let me tell you why i give this place 1 star. The damn check-outs. You always WAIT up in there. There is never enough check-outs. It could be Thanksgiving week and they will have 3 lines open. Hence, where the torture part comes in. If you must shop 'over the bridge', go to the Yes Market on Pennsylvania Ave. They have similar prices and you can shop in peace. The Safeway on Alabama Ave in South East Washington, DC is horrible, I do not like this policy that they have you have to show an ID to buy wine or beer, I mean they be asking 40,50,60,70 year old people to show an ID, this is ridiculous also the customer service at this store sunk, these people just do not care about the feeling of other human beings, I had a terrible experience with a manager there and am going to file a complaint with Corporate soon, I know longer shop at this store even though its a block from where I live I rather get on the bus and go to Harris Teeter or Trader Joe's, Walmart in Tyson Corner, am willing to take the trip to save money and also get treated with some respect, I do not like being around people who do not show me respect, they need to revamp that Safeway at Alabama Ave SE and get rid of low life who work there. read more

I'm new to the area, military, and after reading these reviews, expected bad service and a possible warzone. I went on a Sunday morning with my son, not that many people were there. The automatic doors open and a clean store greeted me. The stockers were out stocking shelves and if they were blocking the row, they were fast to move. I went up and down almost every aisle, no issues. When I went to the register, I expected slow, tedious service but it was all good. I'm new to the "bring your own bag", the cashier was really helpful explaining that to me and explaining that I didn't have to bag my own gorceries. WHen I went to walk out, the security was pleasant and said have a great day. I ended up getting coffee before walking out and once again was met by good service. My coffee was hot and when I finally headed for the door, the security guy said bye...again. No issues in the parking lot either, I felt alright being there and would go back. Me personally, I will not go during rush hour (right after work or Sunday evenings) and hopefully that keeps me from dealing with the torture. read more

My one star is for Starbucks. Since I've moved in the area about six months ago (I'm in md now) this is still the closest Starbucks to me. So I've been making my way here every morning to get some coffee. I'm a simple decaf coffee person. Order the same thing everyday. And everyday, they ask me what I'm having. But that's their job so I'm not upset about that. What I hate the most is the fact that the coffee is ALWAYS lukewarm. Every single time! There should be no reason why I can gulp down my whole drink in a matter of seconds. [I'm originally from the Pennsylvania Ave area where the Starbucks is inside of the Safeway also but they remember what you want to drink (which helps when in a rush) the coffee is always hot. And the employees are always gracious.] Well even though I'm not a big fan of this Starbucks, I continued to give it a try even after I been should have left. What has prompted my review today is the fact that customer service today was very lousy. I asked if they made sure the coffee was decaf today and the lady looked at me like I was telling her she couldn't do her job. Her co-worker laughed so hard like it wasn't a place of business. I asked her because just the day before she gave me coffee and said it was decaf but when I couldn't fall asleep that night because I was to wired up, I knew she had given me caffeine. There's a reason why people ask for decaf. It's not to be cool or different, for me, it's because I can't handle it. They seriously need to do better. It definitely doesn't help that the Safeway at this location is the absolute worst. But that's a story for another day. read more

DONT EVER GO HERE!!! It's a 5 star horror store!! The police follow me around just to Cut through the aisle l run into me and say "I need you to pull your mask over your nose." I responded.." Sir you followed me around the whole store to tell me that? I am not a threat to the store." Then I pointed out several people who had their mask below their chin. Unfortunately this is my local Safeway! (Ugh) even tho Anacostia is changing I surely hope they improve this store! The selection is OK! But I find a lot of its out of stock! The workers are friendly but some can be really Ratchet! The bakery sucks! Over the years they have messed up a couple cakes I ordered! Another hood gem, even by hood standards. Safeway is supposed to present itself as a more selective, more of a step up in presentation and quality than its competitors. Well, you can throw all that right on out the window patronizing this location. There is an episode of the Cosby show where Vanessa brings home her fiancè, Dabnus to meet her parents. Unbeknownst to Cliff and Claire, they are already engaged to be married. So as the russe is set to be sprung, Cliff demonstrates a valuable lesson about presentation. He demonstrates what it is like to go to a 5 star restaurant and dine. The point of this is that he demonstrates the experience of the waiter bringing out your food on an upside down garbage can lid. It's about the presentation. Which is completely absent from this Safeway. It's dimly lit, it's always slow checking out, it is dingy looking inside, and often times the shelves are under-stocked. Go to Safeway's outside the area, and it's a totally different shopping experience. read more

This is store is about as useful as an empty bag of chips. The selection is very limited! When you speak to the manager about product to add to the store. She never gets them. Even thought they are things that's should already be in the store. Like aloe leafs. The option to buy cotton pads!! A better Select of produce. The organic meat selection needs to be larger. I asked for empanada dough , I even showed them a picture and gave them some background of the item. That was months ago. Guess what she still haven't gotten them. The Safeway at Good Hope Market Place is our nearby grocery store. I just don't understand why each time I frequent the store men's room it has the most pungent urine odor that suggests either no cleaning products are used to clean or the products are very substandard for the repulsive odor. This store is just a block away, but I walk or drive a mile out of my way to the infinitely better run Harris Teeter, and cannot wait until a grocery store opens at the Wharf. I absolutely hate coming here, however since it's within walking distance to my house I patronize. The produce section has very unfresh fruits and vegetables. Lines are always ridiculously long and it's not necessarily due to just the sheer volume of customers, but also from the rather slow cashiers ( which will never be more than 3 it seems .) The store is ALWAYS filthy, and it's sad. We don't have anywhere to shop ( with the exception of Giant located almost on the other side of S.E. ) and must be subjected to such a shopping option. I cannot WAIT until they open the Walmart across the street, and I will never shop here again. One good thing about this place though is I guess due to discriminatory profiling or something but you can get Lamb and Oxtails cheaper here than at other places including other Safeways...I guess they don't think that people in the hood eat such things or something.... read more
