The new store is awesome. Well stocked. Clean. Good service. Unfortunately I have been the victim of heavy scales at the Georgetown Safeway, and I have seen it happen to others as well. If you buy produce there, I recommend weighing produce on the estimating scales and watching the checkout scale like a hawk. When I noticed that I was buy a red pepper that weighed a pound and a half, and cost some ridiculous amount, the manager came over and adjusted the scale like it wasn't a big deal. The over all store definitely deserves the four star, but customer service needs big time help! I had not been to a safe way store for years. This was the only grocery store I shopped at when I lived in Northern California. I remember very fondly how good the customer service and their bakery was. I stopped to get my favorite muffins and saw they had them on special. Nine for $5 dollars. I asked the girl in bakery if she could mix the flavors for me? We argued for minutes till she agreed to mix the flavors! She really needs a lesson on customer service, don't argue with one! The over all of the store is great. They have indoor parking which is useful on bad weather. Very nice win section. They even have a wine cellar. Very impressive. Hot food section, pharmacy and of course their fantastic bakery. Also a Starbucks who was so greedy and charged me .25 cents for hot water. What I saw that was very different in this location was that there was a very nice lounging/ eating area with fast wifi! This has been the best grocery store in the area since it opened last year. The footprint is large enough to stock most everything you need, it is well organized, and is priced better than any other grocery nearby. Finally, it has a few artisan options (especially breads and cheeses) that will make you effortlessly a heroic host. I go here often. I still need to go out to Maryland occasionally for the spices, coconut water, and latin/asian foods I periodically need. read more

Don't hate me, Social Safeway fans - but I was disappointed with the new Georgetown Safeway. I do like the idea of a cafe, sandwich bar, wine area and sushi bar - but we can get that sort of thing (with a lot more character) all over the city. I thought it would be more upscale, like Whole Foods, offering more organic foods, etc. And it didn't feel that cheerful to me. The first Social Safeway had a great energy about it. Anyway, I will go back and give it another try. In the meantime, though, I will stick with my own neighborhood Safeway, Trader Joe's and - when I have a few extra dollars in my pocket - Whole Foods. Ok, I must admit, I love Safeway more and more every time I shop there. The store is clean, well-lit, organized, and offers some major advantages that WF, TJ's, and Yes Organic can't even offer. SELECTION: Their produce section is very good. They have a conventional and organic section. The produce may not be laid out as colorfully as WF, but I really think it's just as good and they generally offer the same things. Safeway also has an international produce section that Whole Foods doesn't even have. This international section is really great offering dried chilies (WF Georgetown didn't have this), taro root, coconuts, various fruits (kumquats, quince), and a various kinds of peppers. This is a HUGE plus since ethnic grocery stores are lacking in the DC area, especially in Georgetown. Last summer, I also found fresh lychee selling for $6.99/lb. Again, WF didn't have this, neither do any of the grocery stores I mentioned above. PRICE: Safeway also has a fantastic wine selection at REALLY GOOD PRICES. Barefoot wines that sell for $9.99 at the Dupont liquor stores sell for $5.99 here with your Club Card (which is free, btw, no membership fee, and TONS of savings!). The whole store is very organized and labeled clearly, including the wine section. I was a little sad that they don't have any dessert wines, but the knowledgeable sommelier helped me pick out a late harvest Riesling that was sweet and only $8.99 for the bottle. Steal! SAVINGS: Also, I freaking love having the Safeway Club Card. So many good deals in the store once you have this card. I saved $15 on my last grocery trip, and I only bought $40 worth of stuff. The frozen section has a bunch of good 2/$3 or 2/$5 deals with the Club Card and it's an awesome way to get your nutritious veggies in before the Farmer's Market opens up. -Also I like to get seafood on sale. I love fish but it's hard to get inexpensive fresh fish these days. They often have deals on fresh fish that is still good but about to expire in 2 days. WIth a club card, you pay half of the already reduced price. The other day, I got wild salmon that was originally $12.88 for $3.88. I made salmon vindaloo curry with it and it was SO BOMB!!! SERVICE: The people that work here really go out of their way to help you. If i need help locating the yams, they will take you directly to the yams, help you weigh them, and put them in a bag for you, instead of lazily just pointing in the general direction of the produce section. Moreover, they will check the back for you if something has run out. Only TJ's rivals this kind of fantastic service that I have found at this Safeway. Small con: I wish Safeway had a bulk section. This would make me a total Safeway convert. Fortunately, I can go to WF for bulk foods and Yes Organic for bulk spices. HUGE PLUS: OPEN 24 HOURS!!! Food/Cost: (5/5) It's a mid-range supermarket -- things are cheap. Of course prices vary weekly as the ads dictate. The bakery section is particularly impressive for a supermarket in the District. Ambiance: (5/5) Nothing special, but I like the clearly delineated bakery, wine, and produce sections on the opposite ends of the store. Very clean and items are stocked and neatly arranged. Very well kept. Location: (3.5/5) This Safeway is near Georgetown and accessible for students and residents in that area. Quite a nice area. However, there is no subway stop in this area, so those further away likely will not have access to this store. Service: (3.5/5) Service was average. Of course its a grocery store so you don't go in to interact with people. Still, my cashier on my first visit was the slowest boy ever... Overall: (5/5) I actually live closer to the Safeway in the Watergate, so a trip to this Safeway was a treat as it is MUCH larger, much better stocked, and newer than the one in the Watergate building. I wish I lived closer to this Safeway. For those that have cars, the attached garage is a plus. For a Safeway in DC, this one tops them. read more

Social Safeway, I love you. The place is enormous and open 24/7, including the pharmacy. The wine selection is huge. And have you seen Ivan, the hot Russian sushi chef? Yes, please. The previous incarnation left a lot to be desired, but the new store is just phenomenal. The building itself is impressive, boasting a huge underground parking lot and indoor/outdoor cafe seating. The floral department has a great selection for really inexpensive prices (a bunch of peonies are only a few dollars). The produce has a really wide range of things that are difficult to find elsewhere -- this is the only place in the city where I've been able to find golden raspberries. Other amenities like an olive bar and a nut bar make this place feel pretty posh. The prepared food isn't as good as some nearby places, like Whole Foods, but this supermarket is still my favorite one in the area. read more

Well, the Salvation Army bell-ringers are out again. Yesterday one of them was here at Safeway, leaning against a pile of packaged fire wood and staring out over the empty parking lot... Go-To cola is now 35 cents, which puts an end to my favorite part of grocery shopping--getting a punch-flavored soda for only a quarter. There's no beer sales at this Safeway, only a lot of firewood out front. I find this Safeway to be far less sociable than the others, probably because of the dull staff. This place needs a serious lesson in maintaining stock levels of key products on Sunday.. No skim milk, constantly out of Simply Fresh Lemonade, rotten juice oranges, even out of eggs sometimes. Every week recently, my wife has called me and has sent me on a mission to 7-11 or a neighborhood small market to get something that the largest supermarket in the city should never run out of. Compete with Whole Foods? not a chance, compete with Costco/ not a chance! Safeway management should give thanks everyday that Wegman's isn't openning in Northwest DC The store manager's answer to things to questions like why Whole Foods maintains stock levels is that "We will see who is in business in the future." Yup - this is the SOCIAL SAFEWAY. Go there between 6pm -7pm and you are guaranteed to be stuck at the check-outs where you can do some checking-out yourself!! The shelves are stocked, the aisles are clean and fruit and vegetable sections respectable. I love their artisan breads as well especially when they are on offer. Where else can you get a nice ciabatta loaf for $1.50? And oh - they advertise on their bread labels that if their "french breads are not hot at 5pm, it's free" so I called them on it. The cashier did not know what I was talking about - probably thought I was just being cheap and trying to get free bread. Even their manager did not know about their OWN PROMOTION! After reading the label himself, he mumbled and grumbled to himself and expressed shocked that there was even such a thing. He relented and gave me the bread free. WELL IT IS YOUR PROMOTION - DONT BLAME THE CUSTOMER! Well, I never tried that one again. They still have the promo on their labels though. read more

This has been my go to grocery for years. I don't know how many thousands of dollars I've dropped here. But now I'm done. Today it was 20 minutes to check out around five items; I might live with that if it weren't for the rudeness. The self checkout machine was not working and after having asked for help three times The self checkout supervisor told me she couldn't help that the system was down on this machine ( although a huge line of people had already checked in elsewhere). She told me machines were open further down, and I asked if the checkout machines on the other side were open and she said yes. So I went to the other side of Safeway - of course they were not open. Went back and told her and she accused me of "storming off" when she "was trying to help me". we were Standing by a self checkout that was free - but she told me I couldn't use that one cause she had given it to someone next in line. Who was of course like the 20th after me by then. Compared to Trader Joe's whose employees are sooo nice, and Giant just up the road whose offerings are equally broad, I don't know why people will continue to go to this Safeway. read more

Something has changed in the last few months, the number of checkout lanes at peak times have been reduced, the staff who are working seem tired and overworked, shelves are not stocked with many items, and the price at checkout and the listed self price are often different. In the last few weeks, many of the checkers seem to expect the customer to bag their own groceries and are upset when they don't. In my own case, I stopped bagging my own groceries to pay closer attention to the checkers and prices charged. Many of the checkers do not know the produce, so will enter any number to move things along. I have caught repeated errors in prices rung versus the sale or shelf price. Consistently, I am told to go to Customer Service for a refund. When I suggest the clerk check a price or enter a correct code at checkout, checkers seem to take offense. Maybe it's their sale, or maybe it's bad management, but service at the social Safeway is bad, very bad. Yesterday, I overheard a couple customers in line with me saying they can't wait for the new Giant store to open. Safeway, pick up your game. You have a lot of disappointed customers. read more

This is a very nice and new Safeway. Alas, like so many other in-District grocery stores, the parking is way sparse and the aisles are too tiny. If you are going to make the aisles smaller, why can't you make the carts smaller? And it's ridiculous to spend more time circling around and around looking for parking than actually shopping. But it's all good since you actually spend more time waiting in line to checkout than you do looking for parking and actually shopping combined. Grrr. TLDR: If you don't want to spend your whole evening running around getting 1/4 of your grocery order, getting charged for a dozen items you never receive, getting incorrect items in what you do receive, and getting blown off by customer service, then don't go to Safeway. What it's like to order pickup groceries from Safeway: Order groceries online with a pickup window of 6-8. Arrive after 7:00, call in the number as instructed a couple times because you keep getting a message that says they haven't set up their voicemail, and finally get through, and have them deliver the groceries quickly to your trunk. Get home and realize 3/4 of your groceries are missing and two items are substituted with items you that didn't match your substitution parameters. Call Safeway, talk to a customer service person who was says she's on a bad cell line (the original line and the only number they give) and will call you back on a land line. Confirm your number with her. She never calls you back. Get a text at 8:00 pm that says your groceries are ready and can be picked up anytime before 8:00 pm. Go back to Safeway, call in to the pickup number, have to do it over and over because you keep getting a message that says they haven't set up their voicemail. When you finally do get through, you give them your name and ask for your groceries. Wait for 15 minutes in the parking garage alongside a woman who has been waiting for her groceries since before you got there. When her groceries come out, the person gives you a receipt and says they were out of stock on your other items. Return to your car to look over the receipt and find that you have in fact been charged for a dozen items that were never delivered. Call the number back, multiple times because you keep getting the message about the voicemail. When you get through, and you explain the situation, the guy tells you that they're "kind of busy right now" and you'll have to wait for "a while" before they can help you. When you tell him you've already been waiting trying to work this out, he says he knows but it will be another 10 or 15 minutes before he can get to you (you've already been in the parking garage breathing fumes for 20). So you say "What should I do? Should I come back tomorrow?" and he says yeah. You can only hope there is a way to get reimbursed tomorrow for what wasn't delivered so you can spend the money in a store that will actually give you at least half of the food you ordered and will not charge you for what you didn't. ****************** UPDATE ****************** I called the national Safeway help number the next morning and they quickly credited me for the dozen items that I did not receive. The online interface for Safeway is good. This location in DC is badly run. The Giant a mile up the road works awesomely. read more

This brand new grocery store is absolutely fabulous! You can stop by to grab some sushi or browse a great selection of wine in the wine room. I have been loving whole foods in DuPont, but I think whole foods is going to be my ex. The aisles are spacious, so it's easy to roam around. Great produce section filled with fresh fruits and vegetable that are all well organized. Employees have been so far very nice.. (we will see what happens couple months after now..) I highly recommend that you check it out. Try new things like nut butter bar and automatic ordering system at the deli. read more

This is really a great Safeway. I needed to buy milk... at 11:30PM. I figured I'd check out this Safeway (which is open 24/7) and also get some coffee at the Starbucks inside (also open 24/7!). The first thing that impressed me was how simply elegant this store is compared to all the other Safeways in DC. While most of them seem to be in states of disrepair, this one was obviously brand new and well-designed. The store's huge, and there's a smorgasbord of produce and groceries. There's even a wine cellar. Overall there's not much to say since I only came here for one thing, but everything looked well-stocked (not like the awful Safeway in Adams Morgan that was nearly out of milk and had expired yogurt the last time I went). The employees were friendly and courteous, which I partly chalk up to the fact that people who work the graveyard shifts are a special breed. This is the so-called "Social Safeway" and while people weren't saying hi left and right, this customer let me go ahead of her in line because I only had 1 item while she had at least 20. Really nice of her. This truly beats the living hell out of the other sorry excuses for grocery stores called Safeway in this area, and if you need something at an odd hour of the night you should come check it out. Oh yeah, parking is free too. One thing that would have been cool would be a rooftop sitting/dining area, but hey ya can't have everything. read more

I love my neighborhood grocery store. Large grocery store that's always clean. It's open 24 hours making shopping convenient for all at any time of the day. They have everything from sushi to Starbucks. Great baked goods and fresh produce. Decent selection of wines and cheeses to go along with the wine. During the cold months check out the fireplace which is close to Starbucks. Whatever you need they have. Also parking is pretty easy since they have garage parking. read more

For my 60th birthday my wife bought a Boston cream pie that was the worst we have had. I called Safeway and was told they did not make Boston cream pie. They said they make cakes not pies. What a silly answer. This recipe came from the original recipe created at The Parker House Hotel by their chef in Boston Massachusetts in 1856. There I was, using the Safeway.com delivery service for the first time. It was not a good experience, to say the least. The driver couldn't find one of my bags, was new, and went so far as to ask me to glance into the truck to see if I could find it myself. It happened to be pouring at the time, and rather than deliver to my suite, said new driver said he couldn't find it (um, it's the fifth floor of an unsecured building) and told me that I would have to come outside to get my groceries. The failure for this location, though, came when he really couldn't find my stuff, and called the store just down the block for help. He asked if he could go there, pick up the same items, and bring them to me right away. The in-store manager told the driver over the phone that "it isn't their job to help his sorry ass out" loudly enough for me to hear. Hardly seems like something one would need to say to an ostensible co-worker over a cranberry juice and some yogurt. It's not my job to shop somewhere where rude people are in charge, either, buddy. read more

My favorite part of the Social Safeway experience is just walking in by the produce section. The fresh and colorful flowers, fruits, and veggies are such a pleasant welcome. The whole store is so new and clean, and there's always a large selection/stock of everything you might need. The wine section is very impressive, and transports you from a grocery store to a cellar somewhere with tastings and knowledgeable people to answer your question. On that note, the employees could not be more helpful and always greet you with a smile. The deli and seafood sections are incredibly fast and I've never been disappointed by the quality of the service - or the food! Other perks include the free, convenient, and covered parking. Additionally, the Starbucks by the bakery section is a plus while you're doing your routine strolls up and down the aisles. What is going on with the Georgetown Safeway? We have been shopping there for years. However, starting on Sunday, July 29, 2012, the store reeked of cinnamon or "Red Hots" candy. At first we thought someone must have spilled something, but later we realized it must be some type of air freshener. First and foremost, I am very suspect of any food-selling business (store or restaurant) that uses air freshener. It makes me wonder what odors the establishment is trying to cover up. Secondly, the air freshener smell gave me horrible allergies. My lips started swelling and my eyes were tearing. It was a very bad experience and we did not buy much. We returned on Sunday, August 5, 2012, and encountered the same cinnamon/"Red Hots" candy smell. Again, we bought only a few items and left quickly. I reported the above two incidents to corporate on Wednesday, August 8, 2012, and was hoping for a resolution. So yesterday, Sunday, August 12, 2012, we went back to the Georgetown Safeway. It was about 10:45A. We were pleased, as the cinnamon/"Red Hots" smell was not that noticeable. However, at 11:45A, when we were in the check-out line, the air conditioning came on and the cinnamon/"Red Hots" smell began to permeate the entire store. Luckily, we were leaving, but I had another allergic reaction to the odor. I called corporate again. Maybe we should just stop shopping there, which would be a shame, as I normally like the store. However, I cannot take anymore of the cinnamon/"Red Hots" candy air freshener. read more

When I think of Safeway, this is not what I had in mind. Think you're going to see regular white aisles and maybe a small produce section? Think again. This Safeway blew all my expectations out of the water. When you walk in you're struck by the size of a relatively large produce section that leads to the butcher counter in the back. The cuts looked great too. For all my white girls out there, I was shocked by the size of the wine section, complete with a closed off faux wine cellar. A little past that, it opens onto the prepared foods and deli section, where you can get pizza, sandwiches, sushi, and there is also a really good salad bar that's great for lunch. The Social Safeway lives up to its name. This Safeway goes above and beyond the call of duty in providing for a great shopping experience. read more

This is a pretty good grocery store, with very helpful and friendly staff. They have a wide assortment of well-priced wines. I guess they're trying to position this place as an alternative to Whole Foods. I'm not sure that they altogether succeed at this. The health food options are fairly limited and what's there can be bad. I recently bought some soy protein powder here that is almost inedibly sweet; likewise their soy creamers, only available in over-sweet vanilla flavour. Also, there is a Starbucks, bakery, gelato bar, sushi, and other prepared foods, as well as a dining area. If you're really committed to organic foods and such, Wholefoods is still the place to go, but if you are a bit more flexible, then this Safeway has everything you need at a much lower price. While the store itself is beautiful (especially compared to other grocery stores in DC), the service is foul. A friend and I picked out some loaves of bread at the bakery and asked the employee to please use the slicer on them. He moped over, listening to music on his headphones, stuck his hands out, pointed at the chart for us to select the slice thickness and didn't acknowledge us one bit. Basically, we inconvenienced him despite the fact he was simply listening to music while standing behind the counter. We said "thank you" after he finished, and he just scowled. Bad service! Talk to customers - don't ignore them! You're not getting paid to jam to your music. I still remember the previous Georgetown Safeway and definitely Safeway has adjusted to competition from Whole Foods up the street. The selection here is good and the staff is very helpful always. The selection of local and organic produce has definitely improved as well. It's always a pleasure to shop here and the iPhone app and Safeway card helps you save money. The self-checkout looks convenient, but my advice is to not use it because it seems to take more time in the long run. The checkout associates are friendly and very efficient as well. And do remember to bring your own bags to any grocery store in Dc or they will have to charge you a nickel. Also the free wifi is fast and convenient as is the little cafe area. read more

We go to this Safeway every week and find the staff there to be uniformly competent, helpful, and friendly. We are especially fond of the staff at the deli counter, all of whom are wonderful! I am so glad the "social safeway" re-opened, as I am no longer beholden to the Whole Foods up the block. Safeway is, for the most part, cheaper and easier to get through than WF. I grew up on Safeway, and I can almost walk blindly through any store to find what I need. This store has pretty much everything you could imagine, from baby pineapples to a nut bar (in LOVE with the maple almonds, in case you were wondering), to a lovely brick-oven bakery. While the checkers are mostly of a younger, hipper crowd than I, they are always super-sweet to me when I go in, complimenting me on everything from my clothes to my reuseable bags. The kids, while clearly not from this side of town, are sweeter than pie, and seem to genuinely like working there. This also goes for the Deli team (oh my, what a LOVELY deli!), who is always curious about the things I ask them to put on my sammich. And it's 24/7? Be still my heart. read more

If you're looking to find this Safeway at night- good luck. I almost drove clear past it and I KNEW it was there. They defintiely need to do something about the signage and the lighting. In comparison to other Safeways that I've been to IN DC, it's a pretty nice one. It's laid out well and I was asked more than once by more than one employee if I needed help finding anything. It was around 8pm when I went in so there weren't many people there. I wasn't overly impressed with the produce. I had a hard time finding what I deem a quality apple, onion or lime. In fact, the limes look ill. Sick. In need of some TLC. Few of them were actually green and they were all (yes, ALL...I tested ALL of them) were rather mushy. Everything else though, was well stocked and neat. I just wish it wasn't so expensive...or maybe I've just been spoiled by the prices at the Commissary and Wally World. There's a section where you can get "real" food...salads and such. I'm pretty sure I saw some sushi and I was told there is pizza to be had but I didn't see it. I really don't see myself going back to this particular store but only because of the location...I just happened to be in the area this time. read more

This Safeway replaced the old 80's looking social Safeway. I think its still dubbed 'social safeway' but i have never been hit on at the new version. Or the old one for that matter.... Hmmm... Pro: lots of nice cheeses, a sushi bar and tons of beer and wine. In the middle: not a ton of choices for different brands, but I'm spoiled by Giant. Also the layout is confusing to me, the fancy food section seems like a separate store. This is how all the redesigned safeways are, so I guess this is by design. CON: (and a big one) is that the prices on the shelf don't match to the register. Its really annoying to have to wait and make everyone in line behind you annoyed while they do a price check.
