I was charged $15 for an 8 minute shopping trip in Safeway's "Free" Parking for shoppers garage.

Worst customer service every. The women at the self checkout thinks someone is going to steal something. They do have a lot of thefts at this store but I have never stolen anything. They must not be able to do their jobs and catch the people who are stealing. There are lots people standing in front of the store begging for money. The male cashier does not not apply check outs at the end of the sale like other cashiers do and I end up paying more than I should. The Garage smells awful. meats aren't as fresh as the Safeway on Capitol Hill. Store needs a complete overhaul. There are times when the store is crowded and there is only one checkout person. If you want the worlds best breakfast burritos, stop in and see ms. Rosa. She's super friendly and very kind. Other than her, the majority of the other employees are rude as hell and do nothing but take their time. I've had Paula in the meat section tell me to go f*ck myself and tell me it wasn't her job when I've asked for food to go. I've personally watched her be extremely rude to every customer she has served. Edit: may 18th 2020 I came in to the sandwich area and asked Emie if Rosa was here to make a few sandwiches for my guys back at the job. Emie just says Rosa isn't here and walked away to the back. I've been standing here for 4 minutes now waiting to place an order and nobody's even out here to help customers. I don't see how this Safeway's still in business with the worlds worst employees. They're just the rudest women I've ever had to deal with. They need to fire everyone here and start over with people who actually need a job and are passionate about their jobs. Signs were not clearly marked to indicate that parking was not free. Like other Safeway locations. You have to buy 8 dollars if stuff to get free parking. Did not want to buy that much and they would not validate the parking ticket. They could have just validated the ticketed but the manger got rude like my purchase was not important. I wish there was a 1 /12 star rating. I have been shopping at this Safeway for two years. I actually don't have problems with the food, but the customer service reaches new lows every time I go in. I will itemize them, and Dawn, I see you repeatedly asking people to go to your internal site to make these complaints, but no thank you. 1) I don't think they even want people to shop there. For the last few weeks, including today, no matter what time of day I go, including right after they open, there are never any shopping carts or baskets. I could perhaps understand during a busy time, although that is still poor logistical management, but I repeat, No carts at Anytime. 2) I think they are starting to go cashless. The self service checkouts are almost all marked "Card Only" and you have to be careful, even the ones without that lit sign often have a printed sign saying they don't accept cash. I think that should be illegal, but even if it is legal, it is not right. 3)Speaking of self service, they periodically run out of plastic bags. (It has not happened to me in the last two weeks, but others have told me it still happens.) Now, I am not a fan of plastic bags and try to avoid them, but there are times when I run in there after work for a few items without my bag. Do they warn you when you go in that they are out of bags? No, that would make too much sense. You don't know until you are in line and they tell you in a rather strident tone that they don't have any. 4) Also speaking of self service, although they open at 6 am, no cashiers are at checkout until 7am so you have to use self service. 5) I have never been impressed with the customer service attitude of the employees. They are often too busy talking to each other to assist customers. I'm not sure if they are too blame or if they are just the products of a store that seems to think it has a captive audience so no efforts need to be made. read more

Customer service is a joke. There are never any carts available. During a recent visit, I walked around the store, I found eighteen carts being used by staff to stock shelves. Some were sitting full of stuff, but no staff was around. When I asked customer service about it, they were rude and made it clear that staff usage of carts was more important than having them available for shoppers. Apparently, Safeway finds meeting the needs of its customers an inconvenience. The aisles are always crowded with stacks of goods waiting to be put on shelves. The shelves are never fully stocked. I have been going to this store 2-3 times a week for about 1.5 years and it's the only thing I dislike about living in Waterfront. They charge prices similar to the Whole Foods in Navy Yard but the selection isn't as good (lots of junk), the quality of the meat and fish is questionable, and there are never any shopping carts. It also seems like the merchandise is more likely to be damaged here compared to other stores. On a positive note, the staff working the checkout areas have been polite and they recently opened up an additional self-checkout lane which has helped with rush hour crowds. read more

I really want to like this Safeway. It's the closest grocery store and that whole strip has restaurants, cleaners, salon, cvs, etc so I can get everything I need for the most part. The problem is you're accosted and catcalled by the people allowed to just hang out all day and night. They perch at the tables that are supposed to be for customers to eat the grab and go options or drink Starbucks located inside the store. Instead loiters sit there and play loud music, smoke weed, and harass female customers and their children. When it's really hot or really cold they sit inside the main entrance to do their harassing. It's to the point now that I just go to Harris Teeter or Whole Foods. The prices are basically the same (which is to say Safeway is way to expensive to be a Safeway). The "security" guards do nothing but talk to each other and look at their phones. On occasion MPDC stands outside but they don't do much either. read more

The 4th street store is pretty terrible. Checkout people tend to be friendly, but the service counter staff are terrible, selection is terrible, and lines are terrible. More important complaint regards Safeway delivery: Simply do not do it. It is absurd that this service is even still in operation. My delivery tonight did not show up at all. I had an 8 to 9PM delivery window. Ended up on hold with customer service from 9:40 to 10:15. At 10:25 I was informed they did not know why the delivery did not come and they refunded my $133 grocery delivery. I ended up just going to this store at 10:45 and getting half the groceries I had ordered. The two times prior, the delivery was at least two hours late and I got one $20 credit. The best part is that I paid extra for the one hour delivery window on those. If I'd wanted the free four hour window, I'd have chosen that. If I wanted to do my own grocery shopping after waiting around for 3 hours, I'd have done that. Equally ridiculous, the guy that delivered these last two times did not bring my groceries into the building. He didn't even drop them on the ground anywhere near the building. Instead, he kept shoving bags into my hands in the driveway until I had to inform him that I only have two hands and cannot carry 40 pounds of groceries without at least two more hands. read more

This Safeway carries the essentials but does not have everything that you may want, at least it did not have what I wanted. I wanted a particular brand of canned goods but Safeway did not have it. I also wanted my usual Oscar Meyer brown sugar ham. They had many different types of ham except my ham! The line for the self check out can be a bit confusing. The machines are not very reliable. However, it is still faster than going through the regular check out lanes. The candy section is located by the produce area. I thought it was such a weird area to locate candy! I did not buy any produce here because I thought it was too expensive. I bought my produce at Trader Joes instead at the Orange line Clarendon metro stop. This Safeway is very convenient to get to off the Green Line Waterfront-SEU stop. There are a few unusual suspects around the area though so its important to stay vigilant here! read more

A very sad store. When it first opened it was pretty nice, staff was available, managers were strict and food was always restocked. Well only 8 months took for this place to turn into a really bad grocery place. The fresh produce is almost non-existent here. Lettuce is rotting, tomatoes squished, cucumbers 2 weeks old, the list goes on and on. The only thing that this staff seems to keep up with is their text messages on their phones. Every single person here is always on their phones, right in front of me. The food service staff is ULLTRA slow. It took 7 minutes to cut 1/2 pound of salami. Really? There's just really no respect or an idea of customers here, and the worst thing of all it seems like the managers embrace it. Whenever I come it's around later hours and it still gets busy and lines get long like it's Saturday mid-day, at 9pm. This is because there are 5 people on Express lanes and one person on regular lane. No common sense. I come here because it's the only close by store. I live in SW a block or two from Safeway at Waterfront Mall. And while I can understand some of the concerns that Jason speaks of my perspective, concerns and issues come more from a 54 year old gay black male who, over the years, have practiced integration. With that having been said whether I shop at Safeway at Waterfront Mall or at Safeway just at 14th and D Streets in SE or Whole Foods at Logan Circle on P Street of Gristeedes in Chelsea in NYC i never enjoyed the 'friendlessness' that any of my white lovers or shoppers speak of or that Jason says he misses. From the moment that I walk in to store I am survellienace which, certainly points a damper on my shopping expereince. However, since I do live in the area and frequent Safeway at Waterfront several times a week I must say that I fiond it to be far better than average, relatively clean and sheveles are stocked and I seldom do not find what I am looking for. And on several occasions when I've inquired of a manager of an item that they do not currently stock he, in particular, has indicated that he would get on its avaialibility and if he could he would then stock it. And, at least, two occasion ... shortly thereafter I would find the items stiocked on their shelves. Hoiwever, I do find that there is often long lines at the 4th and M, SW, Safeway but that seems to be the case at most food stores that I visit in DC. And Jason said, the staff can sometimes 'a bit unfriendly'. But, in my case, not ever have I had the luxury of not experiencing racsim and unfriendliness in any store that I have ever shopped. Safeway, for me, is not different is my experience when I shop at Whole Foods at Logan on P Street. As was the case when on Friday, 5 October 2007 that I picked up a pineapple upside down cake that I had pre-ordered the day before. As I walked through the store from the entrance to the bakery and from the cashier to the bakery ... several staff persons ... immediately followered me through the store and stood behind me in line to verify that I paid for what I had picked up from bakery. read more

The nice appearance is deceiving. Check out lines are always long. I have never seen all check out stations open at the same time. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see when more check outs need to be open. Most cashiers just talk to each other and conduct a transaction without one word to the customer. If you have a problem at self-checkout, many times the clerk just comes over and pushes some buttons without explaining anything. "Security" guards are too busy looking at their cell phones. I recently filed a complaint on the Safeway corporate web site. I got a call from an asst manager who left a message that he would call me back. Still waiting. One bright spot...the Pharmacy. I have been to this Safeway quite a few times and it's OK. The store has one of the newer designs with the sort of open area in the middle, around the produce. I don't find their layout to be particularly logical and usually find myself circling an aisle a few times to find what I'm looking for. Their hot bar is nice and has a good variety of food, which is probably the only area where I'd say this Safeway has an edge over the Harris Teeter in Navy Yard. But the LINES here are absolutely out of this world. I have never seen more than two cashiers working a a time, which is absurd given that there are so many people that come to this store. With it being the only grocery option in Southwest, it seems they would staff it a bit better. On the note of staff, I've never, ever been able to find a staff member to ask where something is, and have overall found their staff to be pretty brusque. My review is really a 2.5 stars, which I am rounding up because their fresh food selection is decent. Bring your Kindle or something if you come here, though, because you'll honestly probably be standing in line well over 15 minutes--and if you use the self-checkout, it may cause some sort of weird error that usually takes a while to get corrected. If you're close enough to the Harris Teeter in Navy Yard, I would recommend going there instead. read more

Personally, I haven't had any terrible experiences like the other reviewers here. But then again, this isn't my primary location for food shopping. It's a good option for affordable food in an area that doesn't necessarily have many alternatives. Obviously, you'll still need the Safeway card to take advantage of the specials (and it's my understanding that there's a new program called Safeway For You that allows you to add electronic coupons to your card to use in addition to the sale prices). It's a good anchor store for the neighborhood as more and more smaller shops and restaurants follow suit and set up in the area. I have shopped at this store (both old and new building) for about 15 years, and I think this is the WORST it has ever been managed.There are virtually always way too few checkout stations open while people standing in line watch staff just meandering around talking to each other. There are constantly spills all over the floor, (which is not only dirty but hazardous) open containers and half eaten food lying around on the shelves and near produce, and slow, rude service. The aisles are also constantly filled with empty boxes and people slooooooowly stocking the shelves. This local Safeway has pretty much all you need. It's convenient to the locals, has gluten-free groceries, and a parking lot, in the event you are unable to walk there. Parking is free with an $8 Safeway validation, which makes it super easy breezy. For starters, this Safeway has a Starbucks!! Hence the 4 star rating The lines are pretty manageable and there is a large seating area for the loungers. The produce section is pretty large and has lots of fresh fruit and veggies to include a large variety of organic produce to choose from. The set up of the store is a little different from some of the others, to me, but it's very functional. The checkout lines move pretty quickly, and the validation for parking is self serve. Positives: it's clean & fantastically located right at Metro. But I call this English Safeway: lengthy queues, staple foods are considered "exotic", and staff can be rather indifferent. (1) You'll spend half your time in line, as most regular check-outs are closed and what few self-checkout lines there are are often closed, too. The self-checkouts are awkwardly split apart, with a whole hidden set of self-checkouts making it annoying to try and guess which has the shortest lines. (2) You'll spend the other half of your time simply trying to find what you're looking for. The arrangement & location of things aren't at-all user-friendly or intuitive, with staples such as chickpeas a bottom-shelf item in the Hispanic foods section & specialty sodas (ginger beer, root beer, etc) in the water aisle and not the soda aisle. They're missing a number of standard items any other store in the area carries: sometimes they're sold out (a common issue), and other times they outright don't carry things. (3) While some staff are friendly, those covering the aisles are completely indifferent and just kind of walk off when you ask where something is. Shelved goods are rarely pulled forward, further complicating one's searches for strangely located items. Every visit here reminds me that I need to band together with friends around Southwest to do a group Costco membership. read more

Meh, it's ok. It's certainly big and has a half-decent selection, especially after coming from the "Soviet Safeway" on 17th Street in Dupont Circle, where they sell no beer or wine. This Waterfront Safeway has a large selection of both and has most, but not all, things in stock that I'd want in a grocery store. If you go at the end of rush hour (i.e. about 7pm) there can be little produce left, but they restock it soon enough. Also, try not to go at rush hour (6pm) or Saturday/Sunday morning/afternoons, the lines are ridiculously long. People sometimes forget that there is a line of self-checkouts at the deli near the entrance, so it's worth checking to see if that line is shorter. Additionally, the deli and cafe is nice to have, as well as the Starbucks kiosk (but sometimes it can be hard to find a staff member to serve you). And they set out samples of cheeses or pastries in the deli/bakery area every now and then. Combined with the pharmacy, the RedBox, the large floral department, a big greeting card section, and two SunTrust ATMs, this is a pretty good option for the denizens of Southwest. Convenient that the Waterfront green line metro spits you out directly in front of the Safeway entrance (in a very nice outdoor seating area with fountains, picnic tables and benches) and there's a CVS, DC public library, and Z-Burger nearby too. read more

This is an odd place. It's huge, modern-grocery-attractive, and with all the features you'd want. Absolutely acceptable for grabbing daily staples, the produce is actually decent, and there's a pretty good beer and wine section. So I am new to the Safeway store since I come from Florida and we don't have Safeway's. However, I have been to the Safeway located in downtown on K Street, but not to this location. I came to this location to pick up a cake for a retirement party. Now this Safeway is conveniently located right next to the waterfront metro and it beautiful inside. However, the customer service here is another story. I went over to the bakery to pick up my cake and nobody was there, so I walked over to the bread area and saw two women over there working and asked if they could assist. Only one woman answered and was very rude about it. To top it off she walked into the back where the cakes are held and came back out asking some specifics to make sure she had the right cake and was just very snappy and short. She located our cake and brought it out and pretty much threw it at me rather than handling with care. Mind you this was a full sheet cake and very heavy. I know we all have our off days and would rather be home doing something else, but I mean come on - you work at a store where you deal with people, that is just your job. I think the employees here can maybe have better management or maybe just need some training with customer service. I don't think I will be back to this location any time soon. read more

Okey Dokey! First, lets clarify the garage validation. I stopped here at 9:00 pm on Wednesday night. Free parking with Safeway validation. OK! Oh, but wait! Only for one hour, If you go one minute past one hour, you pay the full daily rate of $15 dollars. Even long after the offices are closed. OK, I lost time comparing meat prices. If you use the garage, you only have enough time to grab a jar of mayo and a loaf of bread. Seriously, set your timer. Even at night, the food line was surprisingly long. I lost track of time waiting. Guess what! One minute past the hour cost me $15 dollars. I was in the food line 20 minutes. Basically a short term store. Do not try to shop here for a weeks groceries if you plan on using the garage. Pros. I like the bakery alot. I can easily lose 15 minutes here. read more

I had a not so fond experience at this location compared to other grocery stores around. I found it odd and impractical that I did a typical grocery store stop during a commute, to grab a large bottle of water and snack after I made quick restroom stop. There aren't a lot of options for quick stops on the road to legally relive yourself. Not all 7 Elevens have restroom access unfortunately. So as I have in the past with many Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Giants, etc., I made a quick stop in the garage only to find out I couldn't get validated for the garage unless I make a purchase of over $15 or more. I wouldn't have used the garage or stop at all if there was no available street side parking. The lady at self checkout was rude about giving me the news and the lady in customer service didn't seem the slightest bit concerned with helping the situation. If they have such a strict rule about paying $15 for a validation (the same price for a short stay garage exit regularly) they should make their signage more obvious. And I think it's ridiculous as I've never experienced that rule with any other grocery store in the district. You would think they were more reasonable during this pandemic. Legally, more restroom options should be available since it's indecent and illegal to pull over and pee in the streets. read more

This is probably the best thing SW has to offer. LOL, just joking. I actually love living in SW and this has to be one of the best Safeways I've been to, besides the one at Mt Vernon Sq. It is in a good location and it is literally right in front of the metro. What makes me the most happy is that this Safeway has alcoholic beverages (the last one did not) and they also have a sushi bar, pizza, sandwich/panini bar, and a Starbucks. They also have a little area where you can relax by the fireplace and surf the web. I often get annoyed by the teenagers that come in here and try to steal stuff, but that doesn't deter me from coming here. A year and a half ago when I lived in SW, I traveled across the bridge to Arlington to do my grocery shopping. Oh! There was a Safeway at this location at the time, but it was so vile, so abhorant, so make-your-skin-crawl-and-pull-your-hair-out-by-the-roots-while-screaming-like-a-white-woman-in-church ridiculous that shopping here was likened to rummaging through the dumpster behind a Yum's or something. It was very much like that show Fear Factor...I mean, without any of the prizes or incentives for compromising your health or dignity. I've since moved and hadn't had the interest or inclination to venture back to that Safeway...until recently. Since I still work in the SW area, I figured I'd drive by the old stomping grounds to check out the renovations that were supposed to revitalize and transform the area. OMG! WTF! SMH! LOL! MILF! No, wait...not that one. But LORD! I did NOT recognize not only the Safeway, but the area altogether. When you guys say "gentrification," you muthafricken mean it! I decided to drop in and buy a few things I really didn't need just to give myself an excuse to look around: well-lit underground parking, sexy sushi/pizza/panini bar, working self-checkout area...oh my. Well, SW/Waterfront Safeway, tres impress me! Not everything had changed, however; e.g., the conversation between my cashier and her neighboring co-worker: "Girl...you heard about Niecy's boo, right?" "Nah, chile; what happened?" "He was murdered last night." "AND HE DIED?!?" "Yeah, chile. And he had just gotten out too." "Oh my God. So wait...that mean she ain't comin' in tonight?" "Girl, who knows...all I know is I ain't staying here a minute pass the end of my shift dealin' with these sickening-ass people up in here...you can swipe you card now, sir." *Sigh* read more

In a nutshell, I'm thankful to have this Safeway. If you live in the neighborhood, I'm sure you are as well. What would we do without it? It's sheer existence is a positive in my book. Now the nitty-gritty of my review: * They have free underground parking with validation for 60 minutes (don't forget to ask when you checkout) with an indoor elevator. * Unlike Walmart, security keeps this store's entrance safe; it's generally free of loiters. * It's clean and almost always well-stocked with dry and refrigerated foods, except when there's a particularly good sale on a certain item. In that case, you're better off arriving early. * They stock options for gluten-free, vegetarian, and other alternative diets. * Staff can be impatient, tired, and frustrated. * Lines are often incredibly long, and slow moving. The store frequently fails to open adequate lanes. * The produce section is sad for a multitude of reasons. Most importantly, the food isn't fresh. Much of it is often brown, and they frequently run out of popular items. * The meat section could use a healthy makeover. I would love to see more organic options, not just the now outdated "antibiotic free" label. OK. Like me, you're going to visit this store if you live in the neighborhood, but try as I do to shop elsewhere when you can. (Or, use their delivery service and avoid the gosh awful lines! I wasn't too happy with my visit to Safeway. Here's the rundown. -- Free parking for the first 90 minutes. This is a plus considering the Giant I primarily visit is only 60 minutes. 90 minutes is more realistic for my grocery trips. -- Fresh produce wasn't fresh at all. It was more brown than green lettuce for most items I looked at, and tons of brown spots on the apples, or overly ripe bananas. Ewww... -- Lay out of the store is a bit odd. -- Food was pricey for what quality was actually worth. I hope this isn't how it always is. Doubtful I will return for good reason. read more

Security issues! This Safeway has security issues! This Safeway makes you show your receipt on the way out like Costco. Only they do not cross check your receipt with your bag contents so WHATEVER! Another indication of security issues is: things that are 'self-serve' in other (read suburb) Safeways are served to you by workers in this Safeway. (Quite frankly, I think it is better that way anyway. Once in a suburb grocery store, I saw a man dig his hand in the surimi and eat it as he shopped. Bleah!) Anyway, what this store does have that I like is a great wine selection, plenty of parking, a little fireplace, and free wi-fi. I'd return, with my own re-useable shopping bags, again and again. This Safeway is arguably the worst grocery store I have ever been to. I appreciate some of its amenities such as its underground parking, but these 'pros' don't even come close to redeeming the deficit of negative attributes. 1. The operations are clearly managed poorly. I have been here several times and I don't think there has been a single instance where there hasn't been some sort of technical issue while on line and a scrambling bewildered staff attempting to fix it. The lines are always long and slow moving. 2. The staff is almost exclusively rude and indifferent to the customers. I can empathize with them to an extent as the job is likely not pleasant due to the poor management I mentioned; however, their bad attitude is a large part of the experience. 3. This is the big one. THEY DON'T HAVE SECTIONS IN STOCK all the time. Today, I visited and 90% of their ice cream section was cleared out. The woman at the register said "they were busy", but the complete absence of that much ice cream seems to me like either a failure to order inventory, a fridge malfunction, or a failure to stock in a timely manner. I then went to buy bananas to see that the shelves were out of stock. I had to pry open a nearby produce shipment that someone had left unattended to and dig through it for bananas. Again, these shortcomings may be a staffing issue, which would further contribute to my first complaint. Unfortunately, this place is so close to my house, that convenience alone dictates I go there at least sometimes. This is the only grocery store near my house, so I just have to deal with it's suckiness. At first appearances, the store LOOKS great. Then you spend a few minutes there. I have stood for 20 mins at the deli counter waiting for someone to appear behind it midday on a Saturday. I've seen shelves and common products go unstocked for weeks (currently, there's zero womens deodorant of any brand). I've twice had my bike vandalized parked on the outside rack in broad daylight. There are never carts available. The produce is frequently bad and the staff frequently worse. Well, at least they sell beer. read more
