This safeway is in need of some help. They literally need more employees that are personable and willingly to help customers who frequently shop at this location. Lines are always super long and some of them appear very fatigued. I can name one person who is super helpful and when she is there she makes things smooth and with low effort. There has not been one time whenI came to this location and she appeared exhausted or irritated. And frankly that has been my experience at this location. I think going here at night may make a difference and it definitely is a way to avoid the after 5pm rush and I flux of shoppers. read more

I have read some negative reviews here. My experiences have been quite the opposite. I've read that the employees are rude but people have to understand that just like most businesses these days they may be understaffed. They don't have time to stop and hold a conversation with you. If you ask for help they will help you. In fact, I have asked for help finding a particular item. Not only will they tell me what aisle it's on but many times they have offered to take me there. Most of the time I refuse but occasionally I have accepted. There is a Safeway closer to my house but I prefer to drive to this location because it's a bigger store and it has a larger selection. One more thing, when it comes to how many items we're allowed to buy, the cashier is following the orders of management. We don't know if the shopper in front of us is sent by management to make sure the cashier is following orders. Well, maybe one more thing. Remember, just like you are stressed during this Corona virus scare so are they. Some are worried about their children and parents and who's taking care of them while they have to work. The location is convenient for me but it's hard to like this place with so many problems. I'm often unable to find a cart or basket in the front of this store and it's nearly impossible to enter/exit without someone (usually sketchy) outside trying to hit you up for money. They also recently installed a bunch of security gates but then stopped using them, but of course the cost is being passed along to customers. There are guards but they stand around playing on their phones while the employees at the self checkout just joke around and ignore everything. The final straw for me was a recent purchase of some butter that upon opening I discovered was moldy (I didn't even know butter could get moldy...) and then I realized that it had expired over 3 months ago. I alerted the manager and she admitted that they had a bunch of expired butter on the shelf that had to be pulled after my complaint. read more

I absolutely HATE shopping at my local Safeway. The store is gigantic and they have a good selection of things and a great produce section, but the layout is absolutely horrible. They've created a separate section in the middle of the store for alcohol, medicines and toiletries...with two separate registers for those things. I understand it's for loss prevention, but completely disrupts the flow of the entire store. So annoying. Also, they only have like 10 shopping carts for the entire store. They used to have lots, but I think they've all been stolen, so now there are never any carts outside. The carry baskets are too small and get too heavy when trying to do all my shopping in one spot. I wonder what they're going to as thanksgiving approaches and more people are going to be doing big shopping for family meals. I hate it here. It's the worst. If I'm in a pinch, this is where I come. The most rude employees I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with in my life. No one wants to help with anything. Someone in full uniform wearing their name tag and everything told me they didn't work there when I asked for help. I have worked grocery stores for over 5 years and that is unacceptable. at least take your name tag off if you're on lunch or something but don't just tell me "I don't work here" when it could not be more obvious you do. When we realized the price is wrong, he still kept saying it's right. When he called someone for help, he described me and my parents as 'CXXX ass'. This is the closest grocery store from my girlfriends' house and we try to avoid this location if possible for numerous reasons. 1) Parking in this plaza is always congested. There are far too many stores/eateries/banks etc compared to the parking that is available. I always have to drive around a bit before finding a spot. 2) Prices are a significantly higher than what I typically pay for at my grocery store back home. 3) Lines are ridiculously long. From my experience, every time that I've stopped at this location, the lines go back into the aisles; including the self-check out. There's no such thing as a quick stop here. read more

The employees who are at the self check station are always too busy chatting with each other so they never notice when folks ring up organic as regular. Don't have it weight the bag you brought, just bag it at the end because when it asks to verify your bags the employee won't do so. One star for zero service, five stars for cheaper produce. This store is HORRIBLE. Every single time I come here, the lines are down the aisles, no one at customer service, and they never can find the damn liquor cabinet key. I've waited almost 30 minutes before for them to find one and I'm standing here waiting for someone in customer service for a stupid rug doctor... as some lady demands her money back at the deli. Since Covid19 I have been shopping a lot more at Safeway Greenhouse. I spend quite a bit of $$ there. Now several times I have bought several items that were packaged and moldy upon opening when I got home. Mainly cheese and strawberries going bad within 2 days. You can't return (tried that) so emailed corporate. They said they'd reach out to the manager at this location. Weekdays after 3/4pm can get a bit crowded with longer lines but this store does have a great team/staff that really does their best to keep the wait short by opening more registers as needed. 15 years ago, this was my favorite grocery store to go to. Over the years this Safeway has somewhat declined... Lots of panhandlers hanging around and a few mentally unstable folks as well. I still come because it is close to home. However, the parking lot has become more and more congested. It's difficult to find a park. The lines are long, but the cashiers keep me coming. They are all pleasant and knowledgeable. I also use the app that gives me free offers and discounts when I spend $50 or more in a visit. I take advantage of the gas rewards too =) read more

I used to get really good sandwiches from the deli here but the quality doesn't seem to be the same. There also seems to be a few new faces who could benefit from some customer service training! I asked the young lady for a tuna sandwich 1 with lettuce & tomato only and 1 with everything on it (all the veggies & pepper jack) she threw the tuna on like "jail slop" & before she wrapped it i asked if she put the pepper jack on the sandwich; which she had not. The only reason why I shop is here is that it is close to where I live. I also stop by frequently for Starbucks (tall iced coffee, no cream, no sugar). However, I am rethinking about making so many trips here. Yesterday was about 97 degrees in San Leandro-- I was sweaty and dehydrated that I decided to swing by for a venti mango black tea lemonade. After waiting in line for 5-10 minutes ( I was the second person in line), I finally reached the counter. The cashier guy told me that they no longer have black tea (it was about 3 pm). OK, so I decided to go for the new strawberry infusion drink. The guy apologized and said that he is in training and doesn't know how to make it (the manager walked off somewhere). OK, so I decided to order a venti peach green tea lemonade. The guy in training told me to hold on a minute as he shuffled around to find his cheat sheet. He told me to hold on again and left his station to find the manager. I didn't want to stand around waiting, so I bought a bag of salad. When I came back, the guy in training told me that he is missing an ingredient for the peach tea lemonade. He said he will refund my money. I almost lost it right there! I am pretty patient, but not when it's 97 degrees out. Next time, they should have the common courtesy to post "Out of Stock" on their menu. That way, I don't have to waste 30 minutes of my life waiting in line for no reason. I have been coming here for the past few years. I noticed that service has been especially bad in the past year. I think they changed managers because I never see that one manager lady (blonde hair, super friendly) anymore. My only suggestion is that if you are in a rush, it would be a good idea to stop elsewhere for caffeine such as Peet's or one of the many boba places around. This poor store, there was a slight glimmer of hope after the most recent remodel, but it has gone downhill yet again. There are a few nice people that work here, who actually take pride in their job and go out of their way to offer their assistance. And then there are the others at the completely opposite end of the spectrum, no happy medium here. I try to make my way to Trader Joe's as often as possible, but sometimes it is just not convenient, so I deal with this place. And most of the time I'm slightly annoyed with my experience, but never enough to voice it on Yelp..... until today that is. Where shall I begin? Hmm, let see... Just an FYI to those not as familiar with this location. Never, I mean NEVER buy soup from the self-serve hot food counter located directly next to the entrance / exit near Starbucks. I'm more shocked when I do NOT see a panhandler helping themselves to a cup, bowl, spoonful, etc. and coming back for more. While waiting to purchase a Bart tix at the Customer Service booth, I had the pleasure of witnessing a double-dipper. I'll refer to the episode of Seinfeld where George double-dipped at a wake, so not cool, or sanitary, I don't care how long you nuke it. Yuck. This Starbucks irritates me too, and I'm probably a little grumpier than usual today, but what's a girl gotta do to have her Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate made right? Tell me and then I'll pass on the knowledge to the barista (or baristo) at this spot, because there wasn't any caramel in my hot choco or salt, dammit, that's the whole point. This review is solely for the deli counter and sandwich counter at this particular Safeway. Was shopping in the store and decided to grab a sandwich so I could finish running errands without passing out from hunger. (*note to self- just cut the errands short and go home and make yourself some lunch next time) I ordered a run of the mill, straight from the menu sandwich. No substitutions. No extra whatever. Nothing. Just plain ol' Safeway sandwich. Gaw! This was a worse experience than going to Dick's Last Resort, where their schtick is to make fun of you and annoy you and act a fool. At least they do it for the comedic value. I was not laughing when I got my sandwich. The young lady who made my sandwich did not look up once- not when I got to the front of the line, not when I ordered, not once while making the sandwich. And then she proceeded suck her teeth at me and to nearly throw the sandwich at me over the counter. WTF?! I was very pleasant to her, made sure to say please and thank you. If you don't like your job, I am sorry. But do NOT take it out on me. I am not a person who will just let it slide. You might not have a job for very long if you continue to behave like a petulant child who throws things. If I ever decide to go back to get another sandwich, I will be sure to avoid this young lady. Best time to shop here is during off peak hours--when most of us are busy at work. My hubby tends to do most of our grocery shopping needs here since his schedule is more flexible than mine. If you come here after 5 pm on a weekday, parking lot is a madhouse, the store is a madhouse and there are not enough cashiers, so you end up waiting in long lines. That's just not something a hungry woman like me should be dealing with after work. All those negatives aside, there are some good things about this Safeway. They seem to be carrying more organic veggies and products. The Asian groceries section is decent. I can get most of the basic stuff I need for Asian home cooking. The Just for U app for the iPhone gives you more discounts on items you buy. I like to buy slices of their Tiramisu and Tres Leches Cake. They now carry packaged Illy Coffee. I can also get Semifreddi bread from this store. The meat department now carries beef shanks and oxtails. They also have some packaged organic and grass fed beef. I've also been able to get wild shrimp and wild salmon here in the past. Their selection of craft beer is decent too. This is a smaller Safeway compared to others and its too bad they really can't expand. It feels cramped in there and when people are in line to pay, they pretty much block the front of the store. Also, I've pretty much given up on getting anything from their deli case as there is always a slow line for it. They really should have dedicated people helping you with the salads and hot food. Instead, the clerks are usually busy making sandwiches for people. The sandwich area should be separate from the hot food and salads area. If Safeway would add more clerks at the check stand and deli case, I think more people would like shopping here! read more

To the extremely rude African American woman at self check out who asked me to leave the store because of my service dog; Service dogs are allowed in all business to to the American Disabilities Act (ADA). You should be fired for your ignorance I have never been so insulted. My dog was also not a nuisance or even noticed, simply doing her job in assisting me due to some of my special needs. I think everyone who drives with their head up their ass comes to this Safeway. The parking lot situation is a nightmare. And that's before you even get into the store. Once inside, there are a whole other set of things to deal with. There is one youngster who works there that I asked where something could be found in the store. He shrugged, grunted something like "uhnuh" and walked off. Gee, thanks. So the next person I asked looked clearly disgruntled and said "I dunno, maybe aisle 7?" and pointed in the general direction I should go. Better than Gruntey Grunterson, but still not what I would expect. What happened to the days when you asked someone for something, and they personally escorted you to the EXACT spot in the store it was, then personally selected the best one for you and straightened up the shelf while they were at it. And it's not like I'm 85 and saying "back when I was a kid..." This was like a few years ago. So I start my mosey over to Aisle 7 to continue my quest, grabby children in tow. I thought the traffic jam in the parking lot was bad... apparently the people who can't drive cars cant drive carts either. After the remodel, the checkout counters are a bit too close to the aisles, so there's no place for more than 2 carts to queue up and check out. Finally, I decided to take a side aisle and go around. Once I got to aisle 7, the item I was looking for was obviously not there. For F&%$'s sake people, why is this so hard?!?! Finally, I got everything I needed and got to checkout. The clerk was friendly and chatted up my kids, who at this point I just wanted to take home and duct tape to the ceiling. Whatever marketing person is responsible for hanging cheap ass toys from the shelves in every aisle just at kid-reach should be drug into the street and shot. Before I knew the aisle to avoid. Magazines, cards, school supplies, and toys. All in one forbidden aisle. So the bagging had begun, and another raggamuffin teen comes up and mumbles "Wud ya like help out?" My standard reply: "Not unless you can come to my house and take the stuff in for me." So I watch in awe at the bagging technique. It used to be (and still is at some small stores) that the bagger was a skilled technician. They could spot like items and quickly and efficiently bag them together. Nothing broken, nothing melting/squishing/crushing anything else. Oh no, not this gem of a bagger. Here's a sampling of what he put together: Giant vat of OJ in with tomatoes (oh well, I guess I wanted some salsa anyway...) Prepackaged turkey, Windex, and a bottle of wine (maybe the turkey will cushion the wine, then the Windex can clean the bottle of turkey juice...) Toddler ravioli bite cans with the bag of (smashed) chips Deodorant and steak Another bottle of wine with a box of Kleenex Holy crap! Every time I go (because it's really the only major grocery store near me) it is something. On the way out, I was approached by two transients and a guy who wanted me to vote for something. I told him I was NOT A REGISTERED VOTER. (OMG good thing my husband wasn't there and never reads this, or he would never let me live that down. I'm always on him to register to vote. It would have seriously cracked a hole in my soap box). But after the bagging incident, and biting my tongue and not saying anything, I would have just said something mean to the guy. So I lied. Then I got home to my crushed food. I also found my mango salsa was expired over a month, and my chicken expired by two weeks. I'll go back to the small markets, thank you very much. read more

She said "oh you don't want it?! I will take it!", and promptly finished the transaction. She then has the audacity to say "give me a minute!" and walked away from the register. I was confused and stood there waiting another 5 minutes with a long line behind me. The lines here suck, they never have enough lanes open when they should and I had been waiting been in that line for over 10 min already. She comes back with boxes of cereal, does another transaction, for herself, with the WIC vouchers that she snagged from that guy, and then bags her shit up before ringing me up................. I am using zero hyperbole when I say this is the worst Safeway I've ever been to. Not only are they consistently understaffed- no matter the time of day or day of the week there are horrendous lines in every lane- this location also boasts impossibly little parking and the worst customer service of any grocery store I've ever been to. And I say this as someone who has worked many many retail jobs-including at a grocery store!- and who typically has the utmost sympathy for retail workers and gives them the benefit of doubt. After receiving consistent terrible customer service and bad attitude at this location (that I have always brushed off or assumed "hey it's maybe it's a stressful day- it IS busy in here after all") today I was finally moved to write a review because of a particularly bad experience. I ran out of toilet paper today. Luckily I checked my coupons on my app and found I had two super good coupons! One for a twelve pack of Charmin for 5$ and another for an additional 1$ off any roll of Charmin. Awesome! I loaded it on my card and almost two hours later went to buy it. When it was scanned and rang up incorrectly (as being 13$ for something I specifically went there expecting to pay four dollars for), I apologized (because the line was so long and didn't want to be "that" customer) and said that I had coupons- which I already had pulled up on my phone. The cash register confirmed that it looked like I was right and called over a nearby cashier to help her with what to do. So then THAT cashier came over and (to make a longish story short) said that it was utterly impossible to apply the coupon for me manually and at the end of the day it was my fault for not loading the coupon onto my Safeway club membership earlier because two hours isn't long enough for it to load and I should expect it to be available instantly (that's a ridiculous expectation of an app made for convenience right?! Two hours?). The kicker is I can't count the number of times I have gone to other Safeway locations, a coupon didn't kick in, and whatever supervisor was on duty was more than happy to enter the discount manually for me. So when it comes down to it in... Yeah. Basically she is a liar and was being lazy and unhelpful. Not to mention rude in her communication of all that. It was out of nothing more than my compassion as a human being who has also held many thankless jobs and consideration for the 15 people standing behind me in line that I didn't call her out as a liar and ask her to go find the manager wherever he or she may have been. Like I said, I am totally not an "I want to speak to a manager type customer" but this was over the top. Fact is- I gave them so many chances, made excuses, gave them the benefit of the doubt...but I'm not a rich person. I did my due diligence, downloaded the app and the coupon and still got screwed when all I wanted was some toilet paper. This Safeway is an eight minute walk from my apartment but in the past year and a half of living here, I can count on my hands the number of times I have gone because literally any location of any other grocery store can offer a vastly superior customer service and shopping experience. read more

Safeway what can I say except when I need to shop for the everyday groceries I end up here. Safeway is close to home and despite the constant challenges in the parking lot I keep coming back. The cashiers are friendly enough and have longevity. I like to interact with the same people year after year it is nice. Safeway usually has what we need and when we need it which is convenient. They have one of those coin machines for those once a year times when I need to convert our coins to cash so that is convenient also. I have only had one experience at Safeway where I really had to wait a very long time in line but that is the exception, usually despite a long line I get through fairly quickly. Sometimes I buy my flowers here also since the prices are very fair and the flower selection is okay. We usually avoid the bakery cakes and sweets though since they are usually overly sweetened but the fresh breads are fine when we need to have a bread and cheese and wine quick and easy dinner. So once you wear out your tires circling the lot for a parking space and you've made your way through the clouds of vape, cigarette smoke, and weed out front,, you have to battle long lines after you've found your groceries. I really try to avoid this location because it SUCKS. I went in at 11:30AM to buy soup. First I had to wait for the homeless man to pocket the bagged crackers at the soup counter. The soup was empty. I asked Nick at customer service if they would be refilling the soup. He went over to deli for me and came back and said it would be a half an hour. I whined and said "man its lunchtime" I came back 45 minutes later guess what? Still empty. Turned around and found Nick again and he ran over to deli. I watched him negotiating with the deli woman. He came back and said a few more minutes. Nick did his best it was out of his hands. I stood and watched deli woman pull out two plastic bags of soup out of the fridge and dump them in the warmer/whatever. Hmmmmm I thought this soup was freshly made? Wow bad judgment on my part. At this point I just bought the soup that was packaged in a plastic container and brought it home and warmed it up myself. So my comment to Safeway is.. It is lunchtime why is the soup bar empty??? They had two cashiers standing around at the deli register, you'd think they could cross train them to warm up plastic bags of soup,,,, But now I had to pay for it. I got into the express lane. On Friday's Safeway has $5.00 specials. The woman in front of me thought she picked up the $5 specials. The cashier sent her back to get the right item or the right sized pizza TWICE. I really used to enjoy shopping at this Safeway. However, the customer service from staff has declined very much. I hope management provide some type of training in customer service soon. The deli staff in particular needs it the most. read more

i usually come here at night and they have most of the essentials a supermarket would have. The main reasons why I come here its because they are close by. If I had my choice, this would not be my primary choice of supermarket. Frankly, there's nothing super about this place at all. The grocery is limited in selection and the prices are overpriced. Anytime I come here, i can never check off everything on my list. There's always something missing or sold out. Not to mention, the outrageous lines that I have to wait in everytime I try to buy just a couple of things. The staff are never friendly and they can careless about their customers. To be fair, I have had a couple of OK experiences, but they are not very consistent. Most of the cashier's are too involved in their own conversation or what time they are getting off, they don't bother to look at the customers. Unfortunately, there aren't too many alternatives if you want to stay in the area. I really would like to see them open a trader joe in the area. I would support that all the way!! read more
