Quality/Quantity - Since I am currently spending so much time in SL, I have decided to add this Safeway to my grocery shopping route. It is convenient and nearby 3 other businesses that I frequent, thank you. I really only shop the ad items at this location. Thank you for having good advertised products in stock conditions. Decent size location, see below for departments. Atmosphere - Good size supermarket. Current departments/services - Grocery, Floral, Produce, Meat/Seafood, Deli, Bakery, Propane, Key Machine, Redbox (for the few people still not streaming...), etc. A huge parking lot, but challenging. Ingress and egress is not user friendly. I actually drive to the back of the property to exit sometimes to avoid the bad aggressive drivers. Service - Self service. Price - Reasonable. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1915 with your 904 locations in 17 states. In 2015, Albertsons purchased Safeway. read more

This Safeway is located in the San Leandro Plaza. They have plenty of parking available. You just might not get a close spot. But otherwise, the parking is plentiful. Safeway has some good sales as other grocery stores. So, you just need to pick and choose. read more

Dear Hubby and I were in the neighborhood, having stayed not too far away to attend a special family event. We went in to Safeway to get flowers, as there wasn't a Trader Joe's nearby on the way to our destination. We even tried a local florist shop, but they were closed at 11:00 a.m. on a Wednesday. Safeway it was. The one person at the florist counter was one of the slowest human beings doing a job that I've experienced in a long time. She was taking great care with an arrangement she was making, which is admirable, but was also completely oblivious that there were an ever-growing line of people waiting for her assistance. It's no exaggeration that there were seven of us in line. I was second after the person being served initially. After taking literally 20 minutes to handle assembling one bouquet, then another five minutes to complete the financial transaction, she started to help the man in front of me. She briefly looked up at the assembled line and said, "Thank you for waiting." That was the only acknowledgement that there were people waiting on her help. I don't know if it would have been possible to call someone from another area of the store to at least assist her with taking money or with minor tasks that didn't involved creating the Mona Lisa in flowers, but it became ridiculous to see how much time she took to tend to each guest. The man before me just wanted three small bunches of flowers combined and a ribbon added. When that was already 7 or 8 minutes in with no end in sight, I just left the line and went to self checkout. I'd wanted some ribbons added to the flowers I'd picked, but after waiting more than half an hour being third in line when I started, and still nowhere near being served, I had to move on. This was very poor service, and very inexplicably bad time management. The only people working in the store that seemed to be engaged with the customers were two security guards. This is my local Safeway and unsure why but on this past Sunday afternoon there were absolutely no checkers except self check out and alcohol area. At one point self check out had no staff or security I saw people just walk out. Unsure what was going on. Ran into Samantha who was running go backs and carts. Safeway is expensive. Get the app. It will save you so much money. Be sure to check out the 'rewards' section before every purchase! My last grocery visit i noticed a new sale incentive on the meat. A concept similar to Lucky's 5 for $25. Safeway has 4 for $19.99 (specially marked items). I look forward to the new deals. I highly recommend their deli. They have delicious sandwiches and pasta salads. Their chicken strips are also huge. Side note: My favorite chicken from the deli is salt & vinegar. If you don't want to cook during the holidays they do offer pre made meals at what I consider a reasonable price. This location does have a Starbucks. Unfortunately they close early. Around 5 or 6pm. They share a lot with other businesses so parking can be hit or miss. I find evening parking on Friday's and Saturday's to be the most challenging. read more

Safeway store is located in San Leandro,Ca. I come here often when I am in areas mostly parked in area for when I working shifts and do not want the long commute back to listed residence area. I honestly love this Safeway location one of my favorite locations to go to. Local of city and nearby other amenities of restaurants stores nearby by with Starbucks located inside for convenience one stop shop. Self check out is an option here. Staff associates are friendly and courtesy not much interacted but when do so primarily I am communicative in English only. I normally travel to location just myself not being accompanied of any other persons utilizing my own personal transporation. Online orders for curbside pick up and in store orders purchases are for self. Floral department is as well location at this store. They run this Safeway like a prison. Only one way in or out they have barricaded the other entrance with carts and blocked off all of the checkout lanes so you have to leave through self checkout. Security with like guns which tbh makes me feel a lot less safe. They won't let you use their bathroom (worker stated that they did not know the passcode--where do they use the bathroom then??) Prices are lower at target, Walmart, Costco, Trader Joe's & local non-chain grocery stores which are all (except for maybe Walmart) much nicer feeling. Idk why anyone would go here. Gone are the clunky anti-theft wheels that are a major hassle for the store and didn't seem to work because the carts still disappeared. New idea. GPS locators on the carts! I went shopping here with my friends a hour ago we were going to buy medicine for my friends husband and also some female care stuff and we had a big bag with us which had our left over seafood boil and some worker don't know if she was the manager she was tall skinny , ugly. This store sells fraudulent gift cards. Customer service didn't have any concern and didn't want to take any blame or initiative to rectify.

We stopped in to do some quick shopping because we were on that side of town. Our normal Safeway is in Greenhouse shopping center. Service- We did our shopping and jumped into the self check out, rang up all our items ($120plus) only to be told we couldn't use a promotional check in that line. So we had to go and get in another line with an actual clerk. She rang up our groceries and when we when to pay she told us we couldn't use more than one of our promotional checks, even though there was nothing in the instructions saying one per transaction. Her name was Jessica , although pleasant you could tell she was irritated. She called over the manager (Ester) who from the beginning was just horrible to deal with. She didn't want to listen to our side and was completely just rude. She said she was going to call corporate for help. She came back and wouldn't even talk with us but told Jessica only let them use one. We have been using these promotional check for years and we know that the Safeway system only allows 4 per transaction. It's was the worst experience we have ever had at Safeway and will not be returning to this location. Ester needs some customer service training. read more

I'm having to order groceries delivered because I'm injured and I cannot step out of the house. Both times I ordered from Safeway, two weeks ago and again today, the delivery driver ignored the instructions and left the groceries on the porch where I had to knock them over just to open the door. After calling for a neighbor to bring the groceries inside, I discovered a broken egg, an expired noodle meal, and all the refrigerated goods were warm the first time, and the second time the ice cream was melted, the pizza was thawed, and they put a large jug of laundry detergent with other groceries in a flimsy paper bag and the bottom was ripped out. This time I called and demanded a refund of the driver's tip. I will never order groceries from Safeway or any other Albertsons-owned store, and I'll avoid shopping at them if at all possible. read more

First time at this Safeway in South San Leandro. It was a Saturday afternoon at around 3:00pm and let me tell you, the check outline was extremely long. They literally only had 2 lines open, and self-checkouts. The self-checkouts were CARD only. The other two lines that were open, it was just one long line, and then the security guard would then inform you when the next checker was available. Seriously? On a weekend and you only have two registers open?? I get we are in a Pandemic, but the Safeway near me always has at least 3-4 registers open if not more. We didn't know exactly what we wanted, so Kim helped us decide with a smile on her face. I'm a diabetic myself and they substituted my order with sugary wafers because they run out of lady fingers? BS! This Safeway on Washington in San Leandro has made dramatic changes in their security. We understand and accept that. However, once a customer gets past the security to get in, the shopping experience becomes a nightmare. There was 1 checker at 10 AM and an impossibly long line. The self check lines aren't much better, the monitor staff yells at customers and gives bad directions and the scanners don't operate smoothly. IDK if this is still a union store -- we like to support union worker businesses or locally owned and operated stores. Therefore, this has been our first choice store for shopping because we want to support union workers. Safeway has reduced the workforce so dramatically that the store is simply not where we want to spend our money or time, regardless of who works there. It is worth noting that we can drive to Castro Valley or Alameda and have a completely different experience. Safeway, shame on you for running your worst operations in dense urban areas and offering a better experience at your suburban stores! In the past decade, you were ordered to pay more than $2 million for charging more than your advertised prices, misrepresenting product weight and claiming that your produce was locally grown when it wasn't. This year you have been hit with a lawsuit over fraudulent BOGO offers. You were once a great chain. Not any more! Our family can take their grocery money elsewhere. read more

I will have to say, this Safeway is doing their best to eliminate spreading of the Covid-19. They have a staff at the door to wipe the handles of the baskets and shopping carts. Signage controlling the entrance and exits of the store. Shorter store hours. And screen barriers to protect their employees at check out. There is markers on the floor to keep everyone in a distance. A staff controlled the movement from the line to the check out, smoothly and very professionally. I hope the other stores can learn from their system. Granted their shelves were low or dam near empty, the staff kept up their spirits and professionalism. This is solely based on today's shopping. Parking sucks here. You can usually find parking but it may take a try or two. This center has people parking from all over. Lines are stupid long for cashiers and self-check out. I came in for snacks and spent the majority of the time in line to pay. I never understand why they never have enough lanes open. I went to this Safeway to cash in all of my change LOL I was doing spring cleaning and my change box was overfilled. I found parking in the shopping center a few stores down from the Safeway entrance. Parking in the shopping center can be hard to find. Inside Safeway there is a Starbucks, I got me a dragon fruit drink it was amazing!! I used the coin op machine, no line. It was fast and efficient. I got my voucher who would of thought that a tiny gift box would hold 70$ worth of change!!! whooo hooooo extra lunch money lol I went to the customer service center that is conveniently rt next to the coin op machine and I got my money!!! I dropped our birthday cake in the way to the party and I brought it back to the bakery .. I was ready to be forced to buy another one and the decorator was soooo sweet and helpful. Absolutely horrendous experience at this Safeway. I usually don't go to this one, but it was on the way so I decided to make a stop. When I walked in on one evening, I had to use the bathroom very badly and was already having a bad limp from a sore leg (injury recovery) from driving all day (had to drive my grandmother who's knees are far worse). As I'm walking into the bathroom, I see someone walking out. I see a worker next to the bathroom so I try to ask if the bathroom had been cleaned (because you know, we're in a pandemic). So before I even can open my mouth, he turns his head away, and says "I'm so tired of this sh*t"). So I'm just in my head "whatever, I want to be safe and use the restroom," so I try to ask again. He starts YELLING out of nowhere, unprovoked, and saying "just go in the bathroom, just go!" I say "excuse me?" but it goes ignored. So I reach for the handle because at this point this is so uncalled for and ridiculous. I'm struggling to open it, flustered and upset. He pushes past me and says "here! Go in!" First of all, WE'RE IN A PANDEMIC, BACK UP! Your face and body is way too close to mine. So at this point I'm like F it, I'll just wait until I get home. Because what is your problem????? I go directly to customer service, and the lady was very understanding, said his name was Tony and that this isn't the first time that this has happened and apologized profusely. She also gave the manager my number so when he's in (Rafael), he'd give me a call to sort everything out. Well I missed his called the first time because I had work. When I finally called him back, a woman who was also the manager of the store answered and asked me to explain what happened. So I did, and she said sorry. She also told me that he "clearly has special needs" and that he gets like that when he's overwhelmed and/or stressed. She also says she'll talk to him, but "doubt he'll remember what he even did." So I'm beyond irritated, and I just say okay that's fine, I was just under the impression when I was called we'd have a better solution. I also told her this doesn't seem like much at all, and she said "well we can't fire him." And I told her I didn't even bring up firing him. Like can I get a gift card or something? An incentive? She kind of laughed like this was some harmless joke and we'd all move on from it. I understand he apparently has special needs, and had I not been almost about to pee on myself with a throbbing knee I probably would've noticed and left him the hell alone. But it wasn't harmless, nor a joke and if he "gets like that" then you need to find less "stressful" work for him to do. Come on! The manager was NO HELP. Like why did you even feel the need to call me then?? You could've talked to him and left me alone if there wasn't going to be a solution offered. Just because your intentions are pure doesn't mean your impact is - that goes for the manager (woman, don't know her name) and the courtesy clerk (Tony). Farrari is her name, which I got up on me leaving upset. They receipt paper fell out of the machine. As I approached her her head was down in a phone, while she conveniently started up a conversation with another employee. I said, excuse me she ignored and I continued on... This Safeway used to be considered the "good Safeway" for this area but oh boy has that changed. From selection to quality everything has gone downhill. The shoppers at this location with their carts full are having to resort to using the self checkout because there are no registers open. On multiple occasions you see open packages of food that have either been eaten and put back or found randomly around the store. There is always at least one or two panhandlers at the entrance demanding money from people entering and leaving the store with their trash thrown around the one open entrance. It's a shame and it seems like nothing is being done about it. I personally cannot wait for Sprouts to open up in downtown so there's at least an alternative to this mess of a store. Do better Safeway, San Leandro deserves more than what you're providing. read more
