We witnessed pure desperation today at 4:40pm on 2026 Mother's Day. People frantically looking for flowers. it was slim pickings. They were out of the mixed bouquets. They had Lillies and roses and maybe a few others flowers. Strawberries were buy one get one free. And they had some in stock , but one was molding. They were out of angel food cake. They had crepes right next to the strawberries. We went to the bakery section and found some butter pound cake. We next went to the dairy case and got some regular whipped cream. They also had whipped coffee topper which we passed on. The check out lines were long with everyone buying a mixture of flowers. We ended up using self check. We were 5th in line, but the line went really quickly. The gentleman at self check offered to check us out, but we had bananas and he didn't have a scale so we had to get back in line. They have a private parking lot and there was 1 homeless woman asking for money in the lot. read more

Must pass the "cage" to enter and exit. Security in the entrance. All high theft items locked up, etc. But I understand and respect it. For me, it is easy in and out. Only passing through and stopped by for 1 item and as expected, it was out of stock... Girl Scout cookies today, I supported. :) My daughter loves these cookies and supports Girl Scouts, even though Safeway sells similar cookies for much less. Floral (Happy Valentine's), bakery, deli, liquor, meat/seafood, fresh produce, etc. Plenty of parking. Open 7 days a week from 6am to midnight. Service - Self service. I don't believe this place has a lot of options compared to the other places very small limited meat, seafood selection no meat department. This place doesn't seem as fully stocked from the handful of times I've gone here . They do have plenty of parking . I also love that the lines aren't very long here either. I would recommend you to go here to pick up just a few items, but not a full on restock grocery shopping . read more

I only stopped here because it was late and I didn't want to drive far, but I should've known better. I rarely go here as this Safeway has gone downhill over the years. The outside is filthy. The storefront sidewalk clearly hasn't been pressure washed or properly cleaned in forever, and before you even step inside, you're already dealing with people loitering at the entrance. I was harassed while walking in, and one person was literally smoking right near the doorway. The entire front of the store smelled like smoke and security just stood there and did nothing. Walking into this store feels like going through TSA with all the security bars and gates, which just adds to how uncomfortable and unwelcoming it feels. Also goes to show how much petty theft goes on in downtown SL. Between that and the general state of the place, it's obvious this location has declined a lot over the years. Even though this is the closest Safeway to me, I'll gladly drive farther to avoid coming back here. Not worth it. read more

2 out of 5 . I'm not biased or cranky like most that post reviews so let's get into it . I've been coming to this store for over a decade . I live in Oakland and I prefer this Safeway location over the Oakland location . I'm from the area as well so I guess you can say I come into the store prepared for whatever lol wether it's a long line disappointment rude staff lol . I will say I like this location for convience . This one is smaller than the other location off Washington in San Leandro and less crowded and usually has more stuff in stock . Safeway deli sandwiches has been a staple in my life and depending on your mood and who you get making your sandwich it's always a hit ! Treat people the way you want to be treated . Might make someone's day and get exactly what you want ! I give it 2 out of 5 because yes sometimes the staff and lines down the isles are ridiculous. I never understood why Safeway will have 8 lanes and only have 2 open ( whose cheap us or them ! Hire more people ) I've never dealt with poor customer service like to where I felt a need to complain . It's a regular job and regular people working . I understand. And sometimes I do go and they might be out of stock in something and i come back a few days later and it's STILL out of stock . I get it's a smaller store which is why I appreciate it . I know that they have to put certain items behind locked glass cases due to theft, which is a shame, but nevertheless, it's such an inconvenience having to push a button to call service over and wait while they unlock which averages 1-3 minutes. Sometimes when they are understaffed, no one comes after I push the button which is frustrating and I'll have to ask the cashier while I'm paying for them to send someone to grab it, which backs up the line further. The staff here has been mostly pleasant and friendly but again, they seem super understaffed and they get quite slammed during peak hours. Pro tip is to come after 8 PM and it's pretty dead inside and getting through the cashier is pretty quick. read more

Terrible costomer service your team members look angry and so confused. When asking them questions they treat you bad and act like you shouldnt be asking them questions anyway. There only two registers open and self check out it's not convenient. Team members also need to keep their attitudes in check and not take it out on the costomers. read more

I just got home from Safeway where I witnessed how corporate efforts to incentivize customer service can go terribly wrong during implementation. After shopping, I elected self-checkout since it was early on a Sunday and there was no one else in that section - not even the cashier assigned to assist customers. After I finished scanning my last item, I turned to my left to bag it. Seconds later, when I rotated back to face the screen, I saw that the cashier assigned to monitor the self-checkout area had silently materialized out of nowhere and was expertly completing the customer service survey that appeared on the monitor. While I expressed displeasure that she was completing the customer service survey that was intended for me, she continued to select radio buttons detailing all the ways that she had provided me with excellent customer service. Now that's what I call chutzpah. I'm guessing that there is a monetary incentive to Safeway staff for meeting certain goals on their shifts and that this particular cashier learned to game the system with unsuspecting customers. I'm all for high performers being rewarded for their efforts, as long as all staff are being fairly assessed. I hope that corporate realizes how their attempts to collect customer experience data and reward good performance are being skewed by some bad actors. read more

This is probably one of the saddest Safeways' in the Bay Area, I mean the parking lot itself is indication of what to expect inside. The shelves are often empty they do not carry a lot of items. The place is just dirty and abysmal. The staff are not helpful and never seem to be around and they all seem completely defeated. (There is a man who works there who looks like he will drop dead at any moment!) Just because there is not a lot of money in this city and adjacent, does it have to be so absolutely desolate and full of despair? I walked in about a month ago to triple light! Maybe not triple but at least double the interior lighting inside the store. Great light is important to humans! All of the sudden, around the same time, the service level jumped up! I've been there a few times lately( swore I'd never go back) and the service has been good up front. The customer service is terrible. My husband purchased one 18 pack of beer and he did not check his receipt until he got to the car and I pointed out to him they charged him for 2 instead of 1. He went back inside and explained the situation to the cashier. She's an older woman, she did not understand after being explained 5 times about this. Then she started getting loud because SHE did not comprehend. After a few minutes of her yelling, a manager comes out and we explain the situation to him. He understood what the issue was and fixed it. It's pretty disappointing and pathetic that people like this work there and represent the store. Who starts yelling at customers for something that they can't comprehend? Her incompetence is not my issue to solve. I've been to this location twice. First time they warned me that they were out of plastic bags??!!!!!! I mean really. Never been to a grocery store that was OUT of bags especially Safeway or any for that matter in my life . Next time going in I go in to buy a couple bags of hard boiled eggs that had an additional 25% discount. Cool right? So I go to the cashier to buy them and he rings them up but he says didn't see big orange sticker discount on bags. For the most part I like the Safeway. The trick is to go midday during the week when the lines aren't as long. The staff is pretty friendly and their items are pretty well stocked. The produce is pretty fresh and the meat department is good as well. A while back I was able to ask for advice from the meat department and good advice was given. Also the floral section is pretty nice but it's been a while since I bought anything from there. And one more note the prepared meals look pretty good last time I bought the rotisserie chicken and it made for quick good evening meal. My only complaint on this place as with other Safeways the aisles come too close to the cash register lanes so sometimes you're waiting in line down the aisle. I understand it's a small Safeway but an extra few feet would be really nice and would make it feel less claustrophobic. And my only other complaint is that they need a good bicycle rack up front I think would be great if they encouraged people to ride their bicycles there and it would feel more of like a local grocery store. As far as Safeways go this one does a really good job! I started coming here to avoid "avoid" The other one in downtown San Leandro. I haven't been to that one in a few years. But he other one has let me down time and time again and I will not return. But this one on Bancroft I do recommend! PS some other reviewers posted photos of slimly stocked shelves. But if you do the math on the date that was due to the beginning of the Covid when grocery stores we're having trouble with suppliers. It doesn't appear that way now. read more

I found the security to be delightful upon greeting and the staff very helpful and ready to help with my needs. The manager was even engaging with the customers politely and seemed to know her regulars by name. I was thanked numerous times upon my exit and wished merry Christmas by 3 staff members. The two stars is really only for the grocery aspect of this Safeway. Don't come here if you want their sandwiches/hot food. They open early and all day but only have 1 person actually working, with 2-3 others standing and watching the one person work. today around 1 pm, I decided to go into this Safeway Store for some last minute items for a dish I was planning on cooking. When I entered into the store it had a different feeling about it. It was much cleaner and organized. I found all my items I needed and proceeded to check out. I decided to use one of the four self-check out stations. Entered my items successfully and even entered my telephone number for my discount card. The changes were obvious and can only congratulate store management and staff for being successful in bringing the store back to the standards that shoppers deserve coming from the surrounding San Leandro neighborhoods and southern Oakland past 98th avenue households who will make the trek to shop at this store. I will plan to come back during the day when it is not so crowded and encourage others who gave up on the store to go back and visit it. read more

Earlier this week I stopped by to grab last minute dinner ingredients. Disappointingly they were out of rotisserie chickens; the women behind to counter said they had closed early...it was 5:00pm. After digging around the lamp heated leftovers I found two quarter halves, success! As my cashier rung up my items she caught an incorrectly priced item... yeah you guessed it, the chicken. $6.99 for 1/2 a carcass. She went and checked with the ladies behind the counter and they apparently stuck to the price . "They must be crazy!" she said. "That's what a whole chicken costs here! Had a weird interaction w/ a cashier named Kendyra around 8:20pm. I pull up to her register and she hands me the scanner and tells me to scan my items. Her makeup was bleeding through her face mask, specifically around the mouth area. I'm guessing she uses the same mask over and over. The most convenient grocery for me - usually find most things I need. But the produce is THE WORST! Today I bought some packaged cucumbers and an avocado, and they were inedible. This year I have wasted so much money on produce that turned out to be bad or spoiled rapidly. How can they sell avocados that are totally bruised up inside or so unripe they never get edible? Their packaged produce like apples, potatoes, cucumbers often have a rotten one in there that spoils the whole bunch. It isn't this bad at other grocery stores, even other Safeways! Also, frequently (today again) lacking things like a pint Half an Half. And the fish and seafood looks horrible. And one time bread was moldy when I got it home. What's happening there? read more

Tashun, our cashier on this day, had such a cheery disposition and uplifting spirit despite her sharing with us of all the things that have been happening in the store -- fist fights and verbal arguments -- due to the shelter in place requiring social distancing. My review is solely based on every interaction I've had with Tashun. She is the freaking best. She's fast, efficient, friendly and hilarious. She knows where everything is and knows exactly what you're looking for when you're not even sure the name. With regards to the store, it's like most other Safeways. Lines get long during shift changes, drawer fills and pulls, etc. Some times of the week, it might look a little more bare because they're waiting for a shipment or someone somewhere didn't order enough of one thing. Each time I go to this store, I'm disappointed - especially with the deli. Try and get anything from the deli counter (i.e. chicken strips) and you'll wait 15-20+ minutes for some other customer being served (deciding on what kind of cheese they want on their damned sandwich). After many complaints to Safeway's office of CEO, their Regional VP Operations, and Store Manager, the only excuse provided (only by store manager) is "we're short-staffed" and "people make more on unemployment." I suppose it was too much trouble for the CEO's office OR the Regional VP to address customer concerns. God I love reading rabid reviews by reviewers with no common sense. For one, to the person complaining about the deli person taking ten minutes to make two sandwiches - yeah, it takes time to make sandwiches. That equates to five minutes per sandwich. God forbid a ten minute wait. Then to the man upset that the "fuckin' cops" told him a lottery ticket was stolen instead of telling him the store was robbed - yeah, that's standard procedure. They aren't allowed to just tell some guy walking off the street the details of a fresh crime when they don't know who the hell you are. And lastly, to the reviewer complaining about Safeway revamping their stores - who complains about a business trying to make themselves look nicer? This Safeway used to be kind of dumpy, with outdated decor and an even worse layout. Since they've remodeled everything is easier to find and the store has a nice modern feel. Staff is hit or miss though, as you'll get your real friendly cashiers who have been there a long time, but you'll also have the teens/young adults who either have a rotten attitude or are more interested in having a conversation with their friend working the other register across the way. I've had a young woman ring me up and make an off color remark about the deli workers; apparently she thought it in good taste to call them "damn Asians" who didn't know what they were doing. The ghetto nonsense that's been occurring here lately is really drawing me away from here. Constantly dealing with issues of shoplifting, robbery, people trying to use stolen credit cards for purchases, etc. I personally like this location very much and appreciate how they're trying to turn it around, but they have to do something about the issues they're dealing with more and more here. I am grateful for this Safeway, because it is close to where I've lived for 8 years. My review is intended to be a positive and opposing view to offer a different perspective than the low rated reviews which fault the store, the manager, and employees for the poor customer experience(s) they had. FACT: This store has old fixtures, old floor, old freezers and an old exterior. Yes, the store manager has no influence over the store appearance other than cleanliness, keeping shelves stocked and neat, or what stock that is carried. FACT: This Safeway is located in high crime area, and yes, this store has been targeted by crime many times. This store, like local residents near Durant Avenue, which is the dividing line between Oakland and San Leandro, are an easy target for criminals because they can quickly cross Durant Avenue and be in a different jurisdiction. It is an inherent reality and risk of where we live. Fact: Sometimes when there are long lines, you will notice an employee refilling stock, but they don't show initiative to help the customers by hustling to open another register. Yes, many Safeway employees are kids on their first job at minimum wage. They are not trained as cashiers handling money. Other reviews complain that this Safeway doesn't offer what "we" want in our neighborhood, no improvements are being made. Somehow this store should transform into a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods because we are the consumers so if they want our business, these changes should be happening. Yet aren't the consumers, because neighbors have been colluding to boycott this Safeway as punishment for not being what we want. If you aren't there shopping and supporting the store with your purchases, then you are part of the problem, NOT the solution. A retail store's budget is determined by a basic math equation. Payroll is a small percentage of sales. Sales plummet, employee hours get cut, not enough staff to take care of business. In the retail world, stores with the lowest sales don't receive any funds for improvements. This store is just going to get older and look older. Safeway Corporation does not see this location as a potential investment. The best stores are where the most money is spent. Those stores get new fixtures, remodeled, and featured the best stock. Decrepit, dingy stores in the low income/high crime areas got nothing, except complaints - from the customers, and from their superiors. It is a thankless job, you lose your best employees to other stores, you are the target of more shoplifters and vandalism than any of the other stores, fewer employees and hours to stock and clean and ring purchases at the cash register, and you never EVER get a "Thank you" for doing your best. The store manager Kevin, at Safeway at 555 Bancroft Avenue has supported our local National Night Out community event with a smile, every year since I started hosting NNO 6 or 7 years ago. Our neighborhood has the potential to create a successful location for this Safeway. Look at Zocolo's and Paradiso. They have plenty of staff and excellent offerings. Two of the best businesses, in my opinion, in all of San Leandro. These are great examples of the standard WE local residents are capable of supporting. These jokers not only put the liquor behind lock and key, they don't even let you have it. They take it and tell you to ask for it when you get to the register. I forgot, until after leaving the store! Tried to call them to let them know to put it back, but THEY DON'T ANSWER THE PHONE. EVER. I am so pleased with the recent changes at this location. I shop at this Safeway because it is close to my home and, with a disabled spouse at home, it's very convenient when my time is limited. Over the last 28 years, I have noticed a decline in safety, witnessed a number of shoplifters who would race out the door, reported a creep who was making sexual advances at women shoppers, and there was poor maintenance inside and outside the store along with increased wait times in checkout lines. By last year I would take the time to go into Castro Valley to shop at the two Safeway stores there, as I don't like the downtown Safeway. The recent changes have improved the Bancroft store to the point I am now happy to shop there. Security personnel look professional and appear competent; the single entry and exit discourages shoplifters; the store is cleaner and better organized; and the alcohol section has been moved closer to the checkout stands where it can be easily viewed. I am especially happy with the new self-checkout stations, which enable me to spend less time shopping. Today the checkout stands were busy with customers in line, all four self-checkouts were being used, and there was even a cooking demonstration. I am glad to see this store has improved and is thriving. read more
