During Covid-19, I've been able to buy most of my groceries at this market. The owner greets me when I walk in, and the staff knows me. The market has nice little produce section and meat counter. The cashier has a sneeze shield, and social distancing is in effect. Most customers are cool, and you seldom run into jerks here. I don't eat bread anymore, so the limited bread section isn't a problem. You might pay a little bit more, but I want spend less time in the big supermarkets while Covid-19 restrictions are still around. Free parking in store lot and on street read more

Located diagonally across from st joeseph, has its own small parking section, has a hot food section, very clean inside and friendly owners/staff. walked over on sunday morning and got small food from the hot food section, they kindly warmed it up for me to make it nice and hot. they have a few condiments there as well if you need. selection is nice, and it is a tier higher than other similar markets/liquor stores found throughout alameda. read more

It's nice to have a market within walking distance of my home. I have two active toddlers who drink a lot of milk and eat a lot of food. We come here for milk when we don't need any other groceries. It's a little pricier than Safeway or TJ's, but it's nice to get out for a walk =) They have a good selection of groceries and pantry items as well. NEVER BEEN MORE DISRESEPCTED IN MY LIFE. PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT THEM. I've been going out of my way to support mom and pop shops during this coronavirus, so I decided to come here to get my milk instead of a chain grocery store even though I knew they'd probably be more expensive. I was looking for a quart size so I was browsing around quite a bit because sometimes they're placed with the dried goods. Well I guess I was browsing a bit too long because the owner was convinced that I had taken a chocolate milk. Just as I was about to leave the store empty-handed and was looking at the card section, the owner came up to me and started yelling "WHERE'S THE MILK? WHERE'S THE MILK?" I was confused as I had been looking at a lot of different viable options for milk. When I realized what he was referring to, I told him that I would never steal from him. But he wasn't happy until he was able to check my bag. I gladly let him because I wasn't guilty but I still felt incredibly violated. Then just when I thought it was over, he checked it again (on the outside compartments of my purse this time). He was determined to find me guilty. After he was satisfied and realized that I hadn't taken anything, he told me "Oh I just bought some milk. There's some of there." To which I replied that I would NEVER support a place that had accused me and violated me so. Then I went home and cried my eyes out. So awful. Please never go here. read more

I have lived near the Chestnut Encinal Market for 22 years and have patronized them through 4-5 different owners. I ordinarily stop in daily for something and have been happy to see the latest owners adding more inventory and fresh produce. The best wind and spirits selection on the island ( maybe in the Bay ) is a very clean and convenient spot to get groceries, too!

The only issue I have is there is always ice inside the bags of frozen veggies. I think this has something to do with the temp in their freezer. Otherwise this store is convenient for me to walk to. My doctor has mandated a 20 minute walk daily. It is exactly 10 minutes each way from my house. So I get groceries and excersise every time I visit the store. read more

This is my neighborhood market. I like to make runs here for alcohol (they have a fantastic selection, really) or to pick up produce I ran out of or forgot to buy during my weekly trip to get groceries. On occasion I've picked up meat at the deli, which has been great quality. According to my partner, they sometimes sell bread from semifreddis which is awesome! This is a definite no-frills convenient store, there's no doubt about that. That said, that's exactly what I need it to be so I can't really complain. read more

Great little market on the corner; not just a convenience store, as the quality and type of goods is higher. Good alcohol and soft drinks section; nice array of basic produce and dairy items. Wonderful place to just pick up a few things when TJ's seems too frantic a place to handle at the end of an already hectic day. Until they respond to the issue of stocking candy next to the alcohol, we will not shop there. They were asked about it and treated like it was a inconvenience. With an elementary school, a high school, and a dance school within a block, they need to clean up their act, or we will drive them out. read more
