Chestnut Market is amazing. Yvonne, who owns and runs it, is a lovely, sunny person. Hong and my dog's best friend, whose name I cannot recall, are such welcoming and supportive people. My dog knows the phrase "let's go to the store," because she would live there if she could. Everyone who works there knows the neighborhood, including kid names - I once saw Hong invite a neighborhood kiddo behind the cash register to check people out, and coach him through it. The entire (3 person!) group is very well-attuned to their customers, and trust I've been there enough to know. I'll also second the recommendation for the Vietnamese chicken salad; plus, Yvonne's mom makes egg rolls sometimes. It's also got a ton of parking and is the middle-island best choice for liquor, wine, etc. They host Friday tasting nights with different liquor reps, something to look out for. Easy to get most of your groceries here - I know because I do. read more

The store is convenient because of the location, but I've gone to this store for months and the workers are not friendly to me. When I walk in they just stare at me and don't greet me. I've seen them say hello to other customers that come in after me. However, they barely acknowledge me even when I greet them as I walk in. It feels like they just want me to leave. I'm not sure if it's because I'm Black, trans, or both. They even do this to my white partner that's also trans. Just doesn't feel good. read more

We love this market! A great place to grab snacks. I'm also able to grab groceries for dinner after dance. Don't miss the Vietnamese salads in the deli section, they are DELICIOUS and make for a FABULOUS quick meal (seriously restaurant quality at corner store prices). We love you Chestnut Market!!! read more

The lady in the store is very rude. They have a wide variety of items but the workers are very impolite. The store is very crappy.

Five Stars! A Hidden Gem in the Chestnut Market If you're a whiskey lover, do yourself a favor and visit Yvonne's stall at the Chestnut Market. Her collection is absolutely top-tier--thoughtfully curated, rich in character, and full of rare finds you won't see just anywhere. Whether you're into smoky single malts, smooth bourbons, or unique small-batch varieties, she's got something special for every palate. Yvonne herself is a gem--passionate, knowledgeable, and genuinely warm. She creates an experience that feels personal and welcoming. This is the kind of place you stumble on once and keep coming back to. Highly recommended! read more

During Covid-19, I've been able to buy most of my groceries at this market. The owner greets me when I walk in, and the staff knows me. The market has nice little produce section and meat counter. The cashier has a sneeze shield, and social distancing is in effect. Most customers are cool, and you seldom run into jerks here. I don't eat bread anymore, so the limited bread section isn't a problem. You might pay a little bit more, but I want spend less time in the big supermarkets while Covid-19 restrictions are still around. Free parking in store lot and on street read more

Convenient and close, but pricy. Don't appreciate being followed around every time I visit - does not make it enjoyable to shop there. I don't go too regularly because of that. read more

Located diagonally across from st joeseph, has its own small parking section, has a hot food section, very clean inside and friendly owners/staff. walked over on sunday morning and got small food from the hot food section, they kindly warmed it up for me to make it nice and hot. they have a few condiments there as well if you need. selection is nice, and it is a tier higher than other similar markets/liquor stores found throughout alameda. read more

It's nice to have a market within walking distance of my home. I have two active toddlers who drink a lot of milk and eat a lot of food. We come here for milk when we don't need any other groceries. It's a little pricier than Safeway or TJ's, but it's nice to get out for a walk =) They have a good selection of groceries and pantry items as well. I browsed the aisles recently and was especially impressed by their ramen selection. read more

Chestnut Encinal Market encompasses a fall back shopping option for a missing item destined for an evening's meal or a forgotten shopping item during a weekly sprint... most items seem priced. reasonableness is in the eyes of the needy shopper. offerings: meat department, alcohol, gourmet staples, beverages, veggies, groceries, brew: st. peter's old style porter(16.9 oz) U.K. 2,99 close out -"blend of mature old ale and young light ale=porter of traditional character" definitely dark in texture and mysterious tasting. -change of pace from usual i.p.a -above average selection of microbrews big bottles/6 packs. on draught: -parking available in back and side, -clean, well stacked shelves -ready to eat foods available. 3.5 stars read more

NEVER BEEN MORE DISRESEPCTED IN MY LIFE. PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT THEM. I've been going out of my way to support mom and pop shops during this coronavirus, so I decided to come here to get my milk instead of a chain grocery store even though I knew they'd probably be more expensive. I was looking for a quart size so I was browsing around quite a bit because sometimes they're placed with the dried goods. Well I guess I was browsing a bit too long because the owner was convinced that I had taken a chocolate milk. Just as I was about to leave the store empty-handed and was looking at the card section, the owner came up to me and started yelling "WHERE'S THE MILK? WHERE'S THE MILK?" I was confused as I had been looking at a lot of different viable options for milk. When I realized what he was referring to, I told him that I would never steal from him. But he wasn't happy until he was able to check my bag. I gladly let him because I wasn't guilty but I still felt incredibly violated. Then just when I thought it was over, he checked it again (on the outside compartments of my purse this time). He was determined to find me guilty. After he was satisfied and realized that I hadn't taken anything, he told me "Oh I just bought some milk. There's some of there." To which I replied that I would NEVER support a place that had accused me and violated me so. Then I went home and cried my eyes out. So awful. Please never go here. read more

I have lived near the Chestnut Encinal Market for 22 years and have patronized them through 4-5 different owners. I ordinarily stop in daily for something and have been happy to see the latest owners adding more inventory and fresh produce. Unfortunately, the blonde Asian checker that you have behind the register is difficult. Her customer service skills are lacking and her personality is disappointing. I'm going to take my business elsewhere rather than deal with daily frustrations from her read more

New owners at my local grocer! Very friendly to boot. The selection is somewhat varied, but they do have a few of those "things" that you may have forgotten whilst at the mega-tron grocery store. Vegies, milk, eggs, WINE! All good, and glad to see them open again! read more

The best wind and spirits selection on the island ( maybe in the Bay ) is a very clean and convenient spot to get groceries, too!

The only issue I have is there is always ice inside the bags of frozen veggies. I think this has something to do with the temp in their freezer. Otherwise this store is convenient for me to walk to. My doctor has mandated a 20 minute walk daily. It is exactly 10 minutes each way from my house. So I get groceries and excersise every time I visit the store. read more

Terrific alcohol selection and it is very reasonably priced. We will be coming here more often.

When they changed owners it was like it was a completely different store than before they now barely have anything they dont make sandwiches anymore and the workers always have attitude especially the blonde woman read more

Great selection of every little thing you might need. And I'm talking beyond standard market offerings. From hot foods to soaps to fresh fruit. Think of this place as a true mini grocery store slash Target. With a friendly staff / owner to go along with it. Cinco de Starro! read more

Friendly staff, clean, and convenient. Priced a bit higher, but not any more than expected. If you want cheap, go to Safeway. Otherwise, they supply the basics for those times you just need a quick few items or want to avoid the crowds at the chain stores. 5 Stars if they'd add local bicycle delivery. read more

What a great local store! It's stocked with a good mix of everyday items and higher-end gourmet picks. But the real treat is the alcohol selection - a really impressive selection of wines, beers, and liquor. Perfect to have in the neighborhood! read more

This is my neighborhood market. I like to make runs here for alcohol (they have a fantastic selection, really) or to pick up produce I ran out of or forgot to buy during my weekly trip to get groceries. On occasion I've picked up meat at the deli, which has been great quality. According to my partner, they sometimes sell bread from semifreddis which is awesome! This is a definite no-frills convenient store, there's no doubt about that. That said, that's exactly what I need it to be so I can't really complain. read more

Wonderful people, great produce for a small corner market, huge yummy sandwiches, meat market as well!!

Great little market on the corner; not just a convenience store, as the quality and type of goods is higher. Good alcohol and soft drinks section; nice array of basic produce and dairy items. Wonderful place to just pick up a few things when TJ's seems too frantic a place to handle at the end of an already hectic day. I'm just down the corner and can't beat the location and goods. read more

Friendly staff and quite a selection of wines. They even have produce and a meat counter. Great lil neighborhood market and so convenient. I always come here for this and that and enjoy small talking with the cashier that's always smiling and in such a good mood. The front staff make this place an inviting little alameda neighborhood gem. read more

The people that work here are very nice, and for a corner grocery they have a solid variety of goodies and staples.

Nice employee's. Food is very expensive and looks old.

I love that I can walk to the corner and find what I need for the spontaneous chef in me! Also, I seem to usually find what I need for activities that suddenly are inspired by my kids. That I can avoid a hop on my bike or ride in my car and just get a few organic staples is brilliant! read more

Until they respond to the issue of stocking candy next to the alcohol, we will not shop there. They were asked about it and treated like it was a inconvenience. With an elementary school, a high school, and a dance school within a block, they need to clean up their act, or we will drive them out. read more
