Picking something up at this Safeway today and noticed they have an interesting new hot deli item: Pork Meat Pies for $2.49 each. Today's special was 2 for $4 for Safeway members. Tried this out and it was surprisingly not bad for a quick, small snack. Of course the filling is mostly potatoes with some carrot/peas and a minimal amount of shredded pork. The store itself is organized and clean like most other Safeway stores. They also have an Olyns (app-connected) can/bottle recycling machine right outside. I think this is one of the better Safeways in the East Bay. When I know I need to grocery shop, I tend to go here. Parking lot is free and big. But it is not just used by those using Safeway. There's a bunch of restaurants and other businesses in the area. But I personally have never encountered a moment where there is absolutely no parking. I guess I have been lucky. Inside is very clean. I haven't been to the restrooms so I have no comment on that. There seems to be a good amount of staff. If I have ever been in need of help they've always been there for me. The layout is easy. The signs are in good shape. Just about the same as other Safeways which is nice and familiar. They have a good amount of veggies and fruits that are both organic and not. All Safeway stores are the same which is kind of a good thing because you know what they have when you go in. The store has a nice layout which is good and predictable. It's nice and clean and has some decent lighting. The people working there are quite nice and although I'm a browswer, I occasionally walk away with a treat, usually on sale for me which is cool. Now if I can only get into my account, which is connected to a landline that I no longer have. That would make my day. Otherwise, they are fine. I hate the fact that they have sales only for their members. Well nothing has changed for the better in the last 7 years. I think this store is actually larger than the South Shore one. Wine and liquor selection looks larger which is a plus. Massive veggie and fruit area but the only organic item we saw were bananas. Maybe we missed it. There were enough potatoes stacked up to feed Poland.Not sure what it is about this particular Safeway but I find it extremely annoying. Not sure why. It could be as you walk in your greeted with a security gate that swings open for you as you enter. Will not open upon exit. Have to go through the check stand. Also, it's laid out differently. Today, April 26, 2026, I went shopping at the store around 9:45 PM. When I walked in, the security guard gave me a really nasty look; then, as I was leaving, she followed me over to the checkout lanes to make sure I was actually paying for my items. She just stood there by the exit--acting like a police officer or something. I don't know--someone really needs to have a word with her and ensure she does her job properly, because it is a massive sign of disrespect to harass people like that. To top it off, she tried to say goodbye to me in a really brazen manner, trying to be a "jokester" by speaking to me in Spanish. I didn't find it funny at all, so frankly, I don't appreciate being spoken to that way. I really don't care for people like that. I honestly think that if I had been a person of color--specifically Black--she wouldn't have said a word to me; she wouldn't have even looked at me or anything. So disappointed I ordered the "Overjoyed Pop Art Sweet Heart Shaped Cake" from the Safeway at 5100 Broadway, expecting it to look like the example shown online. What I received looked nothing like it. The decorating was messy, the writing was uneven and hard to read, and the overall appearance felt rushed and careless. This was meant to be for a fun celebration, and instead it looked like a last-minute DIY project. I understand things may not be perfect, but this was nowhere near the quality that was advertised. Today I had a very unpleasant experience at the deli counter. I noticed there was a team member in the corner of the the department weighing out meat. Even after he made eye contact with me, I still wasn't acknowledged. I had to walk closer towards the team member and ask for service. Red flag #1. The team member asked what type of sandwich I wanted, and I gave him my order. I go to this Safeway's deli counter very often and am always asked if I would like my sandwich cut. I watch Johnnie wrap my sandwich and proceed to label it. When I asked, to have my sandwich cut, his reply was, "You should have said something earlier". Excuse me!!! I replied that every other time I have ordered a sandwich I am always asked if I would like it cut. To add insult to injury, Johnnie proceeds to hand me a now cut sandwich exposed. Wow!!! It has been over eight years since I last did a review of this Safeway. It was nice when they first opened. I decided to lower the rating to just okay. (3 stars) Even though this grocery store is closer to my home, the store is crowded, and my shopping experience here is no longer an enjoyable one. It has become a chore. Part of it is I have gotten spoiled to shopping at another grocery store on the other end of town since seven years ago. Said store is in the Bridgeside Shopping area. Sometimes it just blows my mind when I realize that I have not written a Yelp review on a place I frequent so often. Quality/Quantity - Hit or miss. This was our favorite location, not sure if there were management changes in the past...? But their out of stock conditions have increased. This location also has all the departments, so it is a one stop shop including a gas station. Atmosphere - This location is the newest/most recently built Safeway on the island. Open 7 days a week from 5am to 1am; Yelp hours differ slightly as they still have their Thanksgiving holiday hours posted. Plenty of mall parking. Service - Okay, not good or bad. Price - Reasonable. Based on phenotype and my opinion, one guy looks Latino and the other guy, Asian. What my review about is NOT about them. I actually feel relieved when I know they're helping me. I miss you. I hope you're still here? My 1 star: I used the order to pick up service and about 14 items were missing. (This isn't the first time this has happened) I called the store... The solutions for this: -refund for the items I didn't get. Which is expected. -a $10 credit for my inconvenience. I asked for some kind of expression of apology and this is the response. The solution I crave: order the items that are missing and that I just read to your rep, your team order them, get them, and then let me know when I can pick up. And honestly, I just want my order on my app to match the bags I get. I want to save on time and avoid over spending which is why I use the app. I pay the extra fees and I've filled out your surveys. I've brought your staff member a lemonade before because they were having a bad day. I appreciate great serve and people. Truly. I called this Safeway on Saturday and asked the customer service department on the phone if they issued UC Berkeley staff discount cards at this location (wasn't expecting it to be likely because of the distance from Berkeley, but figured I'd ask just in case since it's more convenient for me to get to this location from where I live). The employee who answered my call said they are new and weren't sure, but then after we talked a little further, they said they were sure they've seen the customer service desk give out these cards to people, so they told me I should be able to get one here. I was surprised, but figured I could take them at their word, so I decided to go to this Safeway the next day. However, when I showed up, I waited for at least 10 minutes in line at the customer service desk since the person working there was helping someone else. When it got to my turn, I explained I was here to get a UC Berkeley staff discount card. The employee was confused, and kept asking if I was looking for a gift card and referring to it as a gift card even though I clarified multiple times it was a 5% off discount card for UC Berkeley students or employees. They then went into the back to look, but came out a few minutes later and said there are no such cards here. I explained I had called someone at this exact location yesterday (and checked my phone call history just to be sure) and that I was advised that the customer service department handed out these cards. However, the employee I was speaking to in person said in all their time working here, they'd never seen such cards at this location. This was incredibly frustrating, since my discount card card had recently expired, and I had only chosen to come to this location for my grocery shopping instead of traveling farther to a different Safeway because of the other employee saying on the phone the day earlier that I could get the card here. Not only was I unable to get my new discount card because of this and my old card was no longer working for applying a 5% off discount, but I also noticed after using my Safeway membership card and scanning all my items at self-checkout, the total balance did not drop as much as I expected and I realized from skimming through all the line items on the screen, that it appeared some of the coupons I was expecting to be usable (which I'd added on my Safeway app ahead of time, so not just right before I went shopping) were not being applied and some other prices looked higher than what they were supposed to based on the posted prices in the store. Ultimately because I was tired and frustrated, I decided to just check out anyways instead of calling over an employee but it was just icing on the cake of a disappointing experience at this Safeway. Maybe the only good things about this location that aren't necessarily the case at some of the other nearby Safeways I've been to is that there is a discount bakery items shelf near the baked goods which have some breads and sweets marked at 50% off, and also that there are some items (if you hunt in the aisles, such as the frozen goods) that are discounted due to clearance. read more

My family needed price adjustment on an item that cashier messed up, cashier told us they can't do jack and sent us over to customer service counter where the person is on lunch and no one there to provide coverage while 1st person is on lunch break!! I frequent this location quite often recently because I see the employees following COVID-19 guidelines. There is always an employee that would spray down and wipe the carts at the front of the store. I've seen several occasions where customers were walking up to grab a cart and if it hadn't been clean yet, an employee would tell them to hold so that they can sanitize it first. Much appreciation knowing that a cart you take is clean. This location would have a decent amount of customers. Some days more, some days less. Customers seem to know how to socially distance between the aisles, with the exception of waiting in line. There's always that one or two that would line up right behind someone or even worse, you.. This is my preferred Safeway in alameda. The staff is friendly and nice. Store is clean. The shelves are neat and tidy. Whenever I come here, most of the items I'm looking for are usually in stock. I feel like it's not as crowded compared to the Safeway at south shore. The only thing I find annoying now is the extra security measures. I understand the need to combat retail thefts but I find the alarm when you try to exit without buying anything annoying. I was only planning on buying 5-6 items so I got a basket but when I saw they had soda on sale, I wanted to stock up so I needed to get a cart from outside. It just feels like once I'm inside this Safeway, I feel trapped unless I buy something. One really good deal I saw this week was on the 2 liter Signature Select soda (Safeway brand soda) on sale for $0.69. I don't think people knew about this deal unless they were in the store since it wasn't even listed in the ad. With inflation, this price is almost unheard of nowadays. Now homeless people hang out there to charge their electronics and they block the bike racks and they also panhandle. Outside the security office would have been a better location for those electrical outlets. Zero stars would be too many. Remember when Safeway was a reasonably nice place to get groceries for your family? You will quickly forget that when you enter this joint. You will be treated like a criminal from the moment the entry gates close behind you, until the exit gates do the same. In between, there will be maybe one person checking people out due to chronic understaffing, so god help you if you are buying a bottle of wine and can't go through the self checkout. For some products you will have to have an employee open a locked cabinet and they will then bring your stuff to a checker. Don't worry- it will take forever for someone to show up while you waste you time in the aisle getting more and more frustrated. When they talk about "doom loops", retail is where it is really at. I am reviewing this Alameda Safeway store because apparently that is where my delivered groceries originate. I have used Safeway delivery service for about 4-1/2 years now and have loved the convenient service. But in the last 6 months or so I have noticed a real decline in service. Just in the last two weeks two of my orders were delivered to the wrong address. I called Safeway customer service and they told me that Safeway Alameda would call me with redelivery information. That never happened. I guess they are super busy there. Both times I just ended up requesting a full refund (which, btw, can take up to two weeks and may necessitate calls to the customer service line to make sure Alameda Safeway processed the credit in the first place. Sigh. I am a retired senior who recently stopped driving, so I will continue to use grocery delivery service, but have decided to order from Sprouts Market using Instacart from now on and only use Safeway delivery occasionally for paper products. Sure Instacart charges really add up, but at least you know you will get the right products and reliable snd timely deliveries. read more
