They are occassionally out of tumeric root so we were far from this store calling around. We called them last night and twice they answered, a man than a woman who said they'll go check. Frustratingly left on hold and they never come back. The Grocery Outlet nearby, twice now, had honest people who actually went to check and handled our query as humans should. Stopped here to pick up some groceries and fruits while I was at Alameda. It's one of the biggest Safeway store. Very spacious and well arranged. Sunday morning and it was packed. I think I was the only one wearing a mask that day other than the employees. Their customer service is really good. Staffs greets you whenever they pass by and help you out with any questions. Had some hard time figuring out some of the aisles and the gentleman who was arranging the items guided me to the correct aisle. Plenty of checkout counters. But I used the self checkout option. Fast and convenient. Hassle free. It's part of a big complex, plenty of parking, but tough to find one close by! read more

On August 17th I placed an order for delivery of four flavored coffees. On August 18th they sent an email before I was awake saying they had substituted. I had specifically marked on the order do not substitute. I called customer service and she said she would put in a request to cancel the order and issue a refund. The refund would take five to seven business days. On the 6th the day I called to see the status of the refund and was told I needed to call back on the 8th day if I did not have it. I called back on the 8th day because it was not refunded and I was told they would expedite it and it would take 5 to 7 business days. They also said they would send me an email with that info. I never received an email so I called back on the 4th day after and was told they decided that I would have to take the coffee back to the store for a refund because I had marked to substitute the closest available to what I ordered. I ordered four flavored coffees they substituted with four plain coffees which is really not close and I specifically said do not substitute. She told me yes I did which is basically calling me a liar. I told her I needed to talk to a supervisor and she tried to not have to do that. I insisted, yes I was becoming a Karen, and ended up talking to Jen. She told me she understood and would take care of it. She would send me an email she would have the delivery manager call me and it would be expedited and I would have it in 5 to 7 business days. I am a 70-year-old handicapped woman who does not go to stores which I explained to them. As of today I have no email no phone call no refund. The customer service department of Safeway is without a doubt the worst customer service department I've ever had to deal with and they lie repeatedly. Highly recommend that you never ever ever use their delivery service because they will screw you. My sister ordered a head of lettuce with her order one time and they substituted cabbage said it was close. read more

Nice, bigger sized Safeway located near College of Alameda and Webster Tunnel. The service here is trying. I figure because it's a busy store, the employees have a challenging time providing service with a smile. This review is for the helpful staff who assisted me in finding a Hello Kitty gift for my coworker's birthday. I was already running late to work and needed to make a stop at Safeway. I had heard that Safeway sold Hello Kitty alcoholic beverages. The Safeway looked standard- bright and clean as usual and there were workers organizing and restocking fruit, vegetables etc. I had asked one of them to help me find what I was looking for and he walked me to the wine aisle, tried looking a bit, and eventually grabbed the beverage expert in the back. I forgot his name but he was able to help me locate several Hello Kitty choices- white & red wines and a special limited edition rosé in a box. (Obvs got that one!) I really appreciated the staff taking the time to locate what I needed and I was able to get in and get out of there promptly. read more

The newest location in the Island City of Alameda - smaller than South Shore's counterpart, and bigger than the one in Harbor Bay/Bay Farm Island - I must say this location feels better than the two! I've always stopped by this location, due to its proximity to my bank (1st USCU) & the nearby Target to get some run done! A spacious parking lot, in addition to a lot of stores & eateries nearby. It's not as overwhelming as the South Shore location, although, it is smaller in size. They have your typical groceries and a Starbucks inside - in addition to a plethora of knick knacks and regular items you'd find at your local Safeway. What stands out about this location, is it's still in a new-ish condition & it's much easier to navigate through its interior floor plan, and somewhat organized - making it easier for shoppers & those on-the-go to pick up what they need, and get their grocery run done! I also find quite a variety in their clearance items towards the back, and their Frozen Food case (also towards the back) - that I always find myself buying additional items I really don't need - to see that prices are well below their usual ones for products such as Dairy-Free Organic Ice Cream & other frozen entrees! Such comforting to see this consistency at this location - I find myself finding the real cheap thrill of clearanced food items here than the other two Safeway locations in Alameda! Despite it being the farthest location from where I reside, I simply cannot NOT stop by this Safeway - since it's so close to the other regular errands I do in this side of the Island City! Highly recommended to do your Safeway runs here whenever you find yourself in Alameda! Easy access from Downtown Oakland and 880 via Webster/Posey Tube, ample parking, and lots of the need vs. want grocery items and more - you've been warned! read more

Came on 20/31/2019 - Halloween to get a pot roast on sale. Needed assistance in locating it. A lone Meat Dept dude (Ivan)was sitting on a cart behind the counter in his cell. I asked if he could assist. He gave me some confused look and then acted like he didn't understand my English. Huh? I was born in New Hampshire and graduated from three universities - WTF would be the problem, Ivan? Ok, I get it - I interrupted your FB or IG time but REALLY?? Your AZZ is on the union clock!! I love this Safeways the manager and her team really go out their way to help you find things. They have a hot bar where you can grab lunch, sandwiches, sushi, chicken and cold salads. This is my grocery story and it's always nice and clean. Which I appreciate. The only issue is they have a huge theft problem. I normally don't come to this location but had to get some flowers for my aunt who is in the hospital. Nobody was in the floral department so I went to the lovely lady at the self-checkout. I missed her name. She called her manager over to help. Devin, who I later learned, was on his lunch break and took time out to bundle a few flower bouquets for me. Even though he said it was not his forté, he was very skilled and knew what to do with the wrapping paper and ribbon. He acted in the utmost kindness and generosity. The produce sections of Safeways is usually it's saving grace but this one is wretched, and the strip mall it's located in is bleak! Aside from the store always being clean, and everything always being on point, I had the opportunity to have a sandwich made by the most courteous, respectful, and attention to detail person I've ever encountered at the Deli. And when it comes to this new Alameda Safeway, both those brothas were right. The lay out of the store is pretty much identical to any other Safeway. The product is no different from anything else. On the plus side the check stands moved faster than normal which was refreshing, but that could be just because it's opening day. Another positive is that this store is extremely close to my residence. I do however foresee there being issues finding parking once all the other stores in the shopping center open up for business. Reminds me of Levi's stadium, they built it and forgot to add adequate parking. My experience wasn't bad and it wasn't good. Pickup-up service is fantastic! They have plenty of numbered drive up spaces, a dedicated phone number to call when you arrive. I don't think the phone rings more than twice, and a super friendly and articulate person answers, goes over anything from your order that was out of stock, and brings everything out promptly. It restores my faith in shopping at Safeway at all. We have an CIVID at-risk person at home, so try do not go inside stores. So drive up has been a true saving grace. This location is worth a little extra drive from where we live, but it works out great because the Target nearby has great curbside-pickup also. They respect your time and money and actually appreciate your business. They put thank you stickers with extra comments and ways to reach them on the receipt. They are making sure they meet your expectations in a way that exceeded mine. read more

So my experience may be very different than the majority of people who visit here. I like shopping late night. Produce is getting restocked and I can run through the store without having to dodge people. I really don't hang around grocery stores longer than I have to. If you just want to go in for coffee they even have reserved parking up close just for coffee goers. I don't like to waste daylight hours doing something like grocery shopping... so you might want to try a late night run yourself. They are open 24 hours and needless to say its a safe neighborhood. When this Safeway opened, I was extremely happy to have it so close to where I live instead of having to trek out to South Shore Center to pick up groceries or go to Lucky's which was often out of what I wanted or didn't have it at all. This location is new, clean, and well organized. I also appreciate that though Oakland Chinatown is right through the tunnel, I can often pick up what I need right from this store. It's slightly pricier but given I can go there at night without worrying about my surroundings as in Chinatown at night, I'd gladly pay a little extra if I need to. I would have to agree with other Yelpers that this store needs to up the number of cashiers. When they first opened, they had most of their registers opened giving a false sense that it would always be that quick. I haven't had an experience where it was extremely slow to the point where I wanted to put back my items but it almost got there two or three times. The parking is plentiful and it's close walking distance to Michaels, Chipotle, Habit Burger, and Panda Express, and has a Starbucks inside. read more

I absolutely love this new Safeway! I haven't seen any remodeled safeways. Everything is lovely and different. The refrigerated section has new doors where you don't have to hold them open and they don't fog up!!! They also made it so that the is more glass than border for a clean look and you can clearly see all the products. The butcher section is different too, the windows in the front open up so the butcher can have easy access to what choice you have. The layout is wonderful and there is a large variety of vegetables and fruit. I'm in looooove. It's a shame I don't not live in or near alameda because I would frequent this place more. I want to say this review is for this Safeway only. Today I went in straight to the deli counter to get a sandwich made. I waited patiently in line until it was my turn. I got a young lady who asked me what I wanted and I told her Honey turkey (that I verfied before getting in line that they had it in the display), on a soft roll. Can you please cut the meat fresh. She refused and said the rolled up meat wad fresh. I told her I got sick from that meat before and could she PLEASE cut some fresh Honey turkey. She refused again and insisted that the rolled up meat was fresh. Please take a look at the picture I took of all the uncovered cheese and veggies ready to be placed on yout sandwich and ask yourself is it really that fresh. So after arguing with her for about 5 minutes, she finally said oh there is no meat. I told her yes there is and walked over to the counter and pointed at the meat. She sighed and FINALLY cut the meat. She came back with 2 slices of meat and had thr nerve to place that on my sandwich, I asked her to put more on. To make a long story shorter. She finished my sandwich and I asked her name and she said Ashley. I walked over to customer service to make a complaint. Safeway really needs to train their employees to treat all of their customers the same. I go to this safeway every other day and I watch White people get excellent service and then when it gets to me a Black person I'm told I can't have a sandwich the way I want it. My bags are NEVER put in my cart just moved to the side of the counter after I pay so I the customer can load my groceries that I paid for. I love this store so much! It's almost hard to know where to start! I've come to the conclusion that is has to be the amazing staff. Mercedes, Shirl, Nefissa, Lisa, Syd and so many others at this location are truly special people to love their work and it shows:) Everyone in this store is consistently considerate and sweet and helpful and attentive. UNPROFESSIONAL EMPLOYEES - This Safeway is in a great location with the surrounding stores/shops/restaurants. It has all the standard Safeway offerings you'd expect. The downside I've repeatedly experienced is the employees. I've witnessed them arguing with each other (at the deli), on their phones while on the floor, etc. My guess is they are somewhat protected being union members, but this leads to poor employee performance since they just don't seem to care. This is the closest Safeway for me, so I will still continue to come here, but disappointed with the lack of employee professionalism. read more
