Safeway near Sun Valley Mall has gotten busy. The old Mervyn's location occupy Safeway that has a Starbucks inside and a gas station. Ever since Safeway re-located to the old Mervyn's it has gotten lots of business. Their gas station has long line of car to get gas. The lot is packed even the one next to JCPenny. Inside Safeway is huge. A lot bigger than the other Safeway that is also on Contra Costa Blvd. Perhaps this is the only Safeway in the Bay Area that is huge. I have gotten great service at this Safeway. I was greeted when I got to the register and I was offer great help when I ask for it. This store needs a Manager that actually has half a clue how to shedule a crew as well as how to stock the shelves with items that people want to buy instead of the cheap crap that clogs up the store. Today as six of us lined up at the ONLY open checkstand, the harried cashier decided to close the lane (I suspected that she had overstayed her normal shift), whereupon several more began stacking up. Ten minutes until a cashier arrived and at least another 5 or6 to open another. When I finally got to check out there were no baggers and I had to load up my 5 bags myself while being rushed to provide payment for the purchase that lacked several items that were out of stock, some of which have had their empty space for weeks. This is a sorry excuse for a business and Frankie the so called manager is a complete air head. Waited 30 minutes for gas in the heat just for them to not take cash payments because their gas attendant is "on lunch" and no one else knows how to do the very simple job of running a basic cash register. These are some of the laziest and flat out incompetent people I've ever witnessed running a business. Not to mention when I call guest services to find out what's going on I get hung up on not once but TWICE. I'm livid and will never be coming here again. Almost everything I purchased I was overcharged. I literally went back and took a picture of all the items and took my receipt to the register and asked who can help me as I have never had to go back to a grocery store because almost every item was overcharged. To my surprise and I kid you not was asked if I brought $254.00 worth of food back...are you serious if I have to go home and pack up all that food and come back again I kid you not I want a full refund. So then I'm told if it was 2-3 items they can help me but because almost all items were overcharged they don't have time and I would need to come back tomorrow and that they themselves get overcharged all the time and have to wait to get refunded. So what I'm hearing is you are aware there is a problem and no one's fixing it and tomorrow I have to drive back again and I may or may not get it fixed hopefully someone tomorrow has time to help me and I may or may not have to bring all these groceries back. I really enjoy coming to this Safeway but today was not as great. The cashier that was helping us seemed not to happy to be at work. She was throwing our groceries as she rang them up. She almost squashed my sushi with the 6 pack beer that we bought. As a store manager, I expect my cashiers to take care of the customers and the products they are buying even though they are having a bad day. I expect them to treat anyone and everyone they way they want to be treated. I like this Safeway because by far it's the most friendliest and cleanest I have been too. I get my gas here all the time. If I really, really need to fill up my tank this is the place to go. This or Costco and nowhere else. If I'm too far from either one, I'll stop at a Arco or whatever. But I try to avoid that. It's interesting seeing the bad reviews for this station. I can understand the gripes about it all. I agree it sucks that this place is open from 5am-11pm. I remember when it was open (supposedly) open 24/7. Oh to have that dream be shattered! Another gripe is that there are long lines. But Costco has long lines too. It's expected considering how cheap they sell their gas, and the fact it can get cheaper if you use your points on your card. They've got twelve pumps to work with. That's not bad considering I have seen some stations with just four. Lines are expected during noon. Like 12pm-5pm lines will be there. But I like to time my need for gas (if I have that luxury) to early mornings or late evenings. Come on, this place had gas down to $2.04 per gallon at one point. That was a glorious week! I love the low prices here and I love that if I have enough points in my Safeway card the price could go down even lower. I once lowered my price down to $1.78 per gallon. I SWEAR THAT NEARLY MADE ME CRY The convenience store is well stocked. Sometimes if I am about to head out to a long trip I stop by to get gas and grab some food for the road. Always somehow manage to buy something that was frozen, unthawed and frozen again that I guess was put back on a shelf else where then someone that works there just puts it back where it goes back in the freezer. This has happen multiple times with chicken nuggets and cheddar cheese steak and philly cheesesteak sandwichs... I know its unthawed and then got frozen again because when I open the package it has ice crystals all over the food sealed in the plastic wrap and the food comes out soggy disgusting when cooked. read more

Until yesterday I would have given a 5 or maybe 4+ rating. It was where I did 95% of my grocery shopping. No More. Just installed: a metal fence barrier / gate entry and a "scan your receipt" exit system. They have previously placed more and more of their "high value" products behind locked doors. Not to mention placing a uniformed guard on duty. (Don't think they're armed but .....) I will not shop here any longer. I do not like being treated as guilty until proven innocent. We like doing our groceries & refill our water on this Safeway. They always have fresh fruits, veggies and flowers, sometimes plants which I like to buy. Employees on the register are respectful. Carts are always sanitized. We are refilling our water today & needed to pee so I run to use the bathroom in the corner by Starbucks. The door sign says "out of order". The nice lady associate in the Starbucks said, " I know it says, "out of order. "But it's available. The door lock is not just working. You can go ahead and I can watch the door for you." Aww, I am so touched and grateful. I've been holding my pee and using the bathroom was a big relief. I thanked the lady & greet her a great day. Bless her heart. Little act of kindness, means a lot . Yesterday about 4PM I go to Safeway on Contra Costa next to Sun Valley mall and was very disappointed. Where should I start?... I cannot buy Gain Laundry pods because the sign says check with Customer Service. I cannot buy Dove body wash because that sign says check with Customer Service. OK, I can deal with that, because I'm so used to seeing the thieves ripping off this store. I go to get in the ONLY check out line, with the light on, besides the 15 items or less express lane. I am immediately stopped by the cashier who says go to the next lane. I assume they are sending a checker over. NOPE. As a matter of fact that lane was blocked by a display which I moved to make room for my cart only to discover NOONE was there. Now there is only the express lane open. I got in line since there was nobody else in line. I let the cashier know they were going to help me because no other lane was open. He said no problem you don't have 15 items. I said I might after my ICE and things I need from Cust. Service but I'm already irritated so I'm not going anywhere and I thanked him for helping me. He addressed the bagger to help me at Cust.Service who had to be addressed 3 times before she paid attention. They didn't have the pods and I didn't even want to bother with the body wash. Every time I buy something from the hot food area it tastes like butane or Sterno. Absolutely disgusting and probably a health code violation. The lady who works the self checkout in the mornings is an asshole. Something rings up wrong, you let her know a SAFEWAY EMPLOYEE sold that item to you under a sale that you verified. Not only do you have to sit there with the light, blinking forever for her to look at ads, ring people up....btw isn't the purpose of self check out that people ring up THEMSELVES?!.... Then you can see her walking over to the deli, talking to the employee, coming back and arguing. Literally over $5 chicken. I walked my happy ass over to the deli where they corrected it, and I paid the price I was promised, and then had to walk to self check out to purchase the rest of my items that I just walked away from. Safeway is always the best place to go! Today I went for the gas. I am a Safeway member so I earn rewards when I shop for when I buy gas. Something though that is important to know is how after awhile your points that your earn to get cents off toward gas will expire. So make sure that you use them. Today is got 40 cents off!!!! How awesome is that. I love their rewards program and I'm glad that I'm apart of it. Not only do i get money off gas from buying groceries I get deals in store. A lot of the Safeway brands have the best deals. Also check out the dollar days! These are awesome and reward members only. They always have great produce and meat/fish. They also carry beyond meat which is a huge plus for me. I love this brand and just notice they added beyond meat sausages as well! I am so excited to try these! read more

Worst customer service I've had at this Safeway was tonight by the dark long haired checker Jenny and her red headed manager. Jenny was completely rude and at one point told us to "stop talking". We told her we waiting in line at 1 and no one helped us. She stated "she doesn't remember the line 1 light being on in a very snippy tone". Eventually it was confirmed the light was on and Jenny continues to make rude comments to us. When we asked to see a manager, the red head, who was standing near by was smiling and laughing at the entire thing. She literally heard Jenny say "you need to just stop talking". Mind you, we were at self check out to begin with and we're trying to get the managers assistance with our order, but she was too busy talking smack with a blonde haired worker and didn't notice us. One star review for customer service. I was highly disappointed during the check out. There was a long line and I was next to be rung up. I hadn't unloaded my groceries, a cashier from the side comes over, looks at me and then proceeds to tell the woman behind me that he could ring her up. I asked, if he could take me next. (As I was actually next). Steve ignored me. I wasn't greeted. Steve didn't say a single word. I don't know why that happened. I felt uncomfortable. Zero eye contact. Slammed groceries. Looked disgusted. I didn't even want to call a manager over, as a lot of Yelp reviews stated to caution the manager. This gas station is like buying gas in Venezuela: it's really cheap but you have to wait in line forever. To add to the frustration, I find that the pumps are slow and inconsistent in accepting my Safeways discount. I don't think I'm alone. Part of the reason it takes so long is that the customers in front spend minutes messing around at the pump before going into the gas station and then, finally, pumping their gas. Last time I went I waited more than 20 minutes because they closed half the pumps. By the time I was close enough to see the problem, I was trapped in the line For me, it's not worth the 10 to 30 minute wait unless I'm getting at least 50c discount. read more
