I was in the safeway in pleasant hill today picking up groceries with my parents. I had the most helpful cashier. Her name was Sunia and she was just lovely. My parents are in the 80 plus club and they still have flip phones. Therefor they are not able the down load your app for the discounts. Sunia was so patient and and was able to figure out away to get them the sale price that was posted. My parents are already on a very tight income. We were very thankful for her compassion, knowledge and willingness to help them out. Safeway is definitely lucky to have her as an employee. read more

Every time I shop at this store with my mom there has only been one checker, every time! Today when we went there, the line was super long, and my mother and I were standing in long line waiting because we had vegetables and fresh fruit to buy. Then one of the cashiers walks by and said oh I can't take you you have fresh vegetables and she walked away. After thinking about it for a few minutes, my mom and I walked out without our cart full of groceries because this is absolutely unacceptable to only have one checker when dozens of people are in line waiting to purchase their groceries. My mom had ice cream she did return that to the shelf. But then we walked out. We are never going back there again. read more

Based on its look, this Safeway probably has been around for a long time. Just like any other Safeway store, this store was fully stocked, and the isles looked nice and organized with proper isle labels to help customers find what they're looking for. I had no problem with finding what I wanted to get when I was at this store. When I entered the store, however, I had a hard time finding available shopping baskets, and I looked for them at both entrances and still couldn't find any. I ended up finding some near the checkout stations. So that was a bit confusing. But I did like that they offered sanitizing wipes here. I was hoping to see a "clearance" section just like I would easily find at any other Safeway, but somehow I wasn't able to find it at this Safeway. Maybe I just missed it. At this Safeway, people got the option of checking out with the cashier, or doing it themselves using a self-help kiosk. And the self check out machines here looked more chic and newer than other Safeway that I've seen so far. read more

Full disclosure I a not a fan at all and try to avoid all Safeways. Nothing against the staff- They are pleasant and do their job. It's the overall product quality including fruit and produce, meat, and seafood coupled with the price. I will only purchase dry goods and canned food from Safeway and when necessary. Otherwise I drive to Lunardi's in WC for meat and fish, then to Trader Joe's for Fruit, veg and novelties etc. It's inconvenient but the quality of the foods is so much better. I lived on the east coasts for 20 years and this type of store simply would simply not survive with competition. If you're ever in the north east check out Wegmans grocery. You'll see what I mean. read more

I stopped by this Safeway location to quickly buy a small snack and walked toward the self-checkout area. An employee immediately told me the machines were all taken in a tone that suggested I was trying to cut the line, which I was not. I calmly responded "no problem, I'll wait" and stepped away until the area cleared. I understand stores get busy, but customers should not be spoken to in a way that assumes they are doing something wrong. A more respectful and neutral tone would go a long way. I hope staff are reminded to communicate with customers more courteously. The cookie was good though. read more

Overall a pleasant shopping experience at this Safeway in Pleasant Hill. Shelves are well stocked with a nice clean store. The Starbucks inside is also fast, friendly and efficient. However there were only 2 cashiers so I opted for the self check out line. I encountered some issues, along with another self check out customer, and it took a long while for someone (apparently a manager) to come to assist. Their weekly specials are always a deal. The store was pretty empty on a Wednesday afternoon. So it was a fast in and out. read more

This Safeway needs to pull it together. Went today to get a sandwich and then do my shopping. Deli was not busy and they had 2 people working behind the counter. Slowest service ever. Took 15 min to get someone potato salad and then help with sandwiches. I ordered 1 and then my husband wanted one. Theres a new limited edition sandwich. The employee didn't even know it was one that was offered let alone how to make it but seemed he was bothered by us asking for a sandwich that's on the menu. Only 1 line available and it was incredibly long. Took another 20 min or so before a 2nd line opened up. I try and avoid this Safeway but had no choice today. read more

This location has the worst Deli food and customer service of all time! The food is either overcooked or undercooked. There is always a wait even when there are no customers in line or waiting. No greeting just a rude attitude person that is not happy to be there. The workers just seem so unhappy. I honestly think has to do with management. Every Friday they have special offers in the meat department which offers incredible discounts and if you have the For U app the discounts are even higher. The staff working at the store are nice and courteous and always willing to help. The store is clean and well kept and if there's anything out of place you can let a staff know and they take care of it fairly quickly. We went to get a deli sandwich and Anna was seeming to be the only one tending to all of the customers up front and doing quite a remarkable job I might add. Even though she had several folks waiting for her, she still was extremely pleasant and kind to every customer. While she was making our sandwich, I noticed a man, Keith, who came from the back wearing gloves and proceeded to help the person directly in front of him (not necessarily who was next in line). He had to go back and forth from front to back of deli area and tend to what smelled to be chicken he was cooking in the back and never once did he change gloves. He continued to help the customer with same gloves he was prepping food in the back with. My review is twofold: an all star review for Anna who was amazing and kind and made an awesome sandwich and a review of disgust for Keith for not being sanitary AT ALL and for not being a team player and helping her sooner with the long line. 5 stars for Anna and 0 for Keith. read more

Safeway is one of the problems with groceries today. The prices they charge are absolutely crazy. California Pizza sale price is 6.99. That's the SALE. The worst are the 12-packs of coke. I was in there and saw "price of 2, 8.99" sale. I thought, oh wow, 4.50 a piece, that's what it should cost. Turns out that was, "if you buy 2, the price is 8.99 a piece." That's the sale. Their non-sale price for a 12-pack of coke? 13 bucks. 13 bucks for 12 cokes. I have a gift card for $25 for Safeway (or other stores). I could not buy two 12-packs with that card. 13 bucks, folks. I love fruit but I don't buy fruit here - the apples are essentially 2.50 a piece. That's absurd. There are some "sale" prices that are okay prices - Prego sale is $3.00 a bottle today. That should be the regular price (it was 2.89 only a couple years ago) but that's the sale price, I would pay that but I got rid of my Safeway member card. Stores like this are why 76 million morons voted for the guy we got now running the country. The parking lot here is at least big and spacious, and easy to get out of. Grocery Outlet might be the place to get much of your groceries. Target is even cheaper than Safeway. read more

They've definitely improved in a bunch of areas and the service is much more consistent. friendly checkers, and the ladies at the self checkout counter are always willing to lend hand. isn't the best seafood Safeway, but the baking department is good and Deli meats is pretty solid to. Extremely disappointed in their deli department. Went for a third time to see if anything had changed but it seems there's no one running the store. Sandwich bar closed at 3pm. When buying their $5 deals in fridays they always run out of product. Ladies are extremely rude that work there. I usually go to the willow pass road or the other contra costa location. No issues at all. If they run out, they get another batch going and will communicate of the wait. Again, this was the third time I tried to shop at the location with the same issues. I love my Safeway store in Pleasant Hill. It is older and more like a neighborhood store. This store is my favorite because I am so familiar with their layout and can find what I need quickly. If I go to other Safeway stores in Walnut Creek, they are more updated and beautiful, but I can't find things and spend more time trying to find things, so my little Pleasant Hill store is my "go to" grocery store. One of my favorite checkers is Marty Picnic. Marty is a young man always willing to help, very sweet and very courteous. I think the best word to describe Marty is "earnest" for his sincere and intense conviction of being a good employee serving his customers. He is young and he makes me feel more confident that old fashion values still exists in the younger generation. I am always happier when I see Marty is on duty. read more

What is going on with this bakery? I went here this Saturday to order a cake for Monday morning. They had a cute cake with M&M's on it, but wanted it with all chocolate inside. First off the energy coming from behind the counter made me feel like they didn't even want to deal with me, but I thought maybe it was just my imagination because this is a supermarket after all, well no, I was right. They let me know they couldn't have a cake done Monday morning and were taking no more orders for Sunday evening. I just said, " ok, thank you" and left. No other options were given. They obviously don't want customers to even approach the counter, the tone alone made this obvious. That's no problem for me, because there are many other options out there. I absolutely can't believe the number of isles and products that are locked up! It used to be only expensive products such as batteries but now you can expect to wait for someone to unlock a door for soap and deodorant! On top of it, they don't even hand you the product-- you have to pick it up at the register when you pay. In addition to being very annoying to wait, it makes all customers feel like criminals. Butcher review only. they say they will accommodate special and custom cuts, but do so horribly. I asked for just a thick cut of pork chops and was greeted with an argumentative and aggressive butcher. He filled my order reluctantly only to find when I got home that i had to remove about two pounds of hidden fat. I didn't have the time to return it so cleaned it up as best I could. Prices are cheaper for gas. You can use your Safeway rewards. We used our rewards for as low as .10 cents a gallon. We stopped here for gas and I have to add I was super thirsty and grabbed a .94 cent (with safeway card discount) Arizona Watermelon drink. Safeway bakery. Friday late afternoon I came by to place an order and was greeted with we are not taking any orders! Taken aback I explained I was placing an order for Monday afternoon pick up - oh the clerk exclaimed. I should have turned around and walked out but I stayed and placed an order. This locations bakery has done amazing cakes for us in the past so I did not think twice about placing an order for a 1/4 sheet cake for the awards dinner for our high schools girls water polo team. On Monday I arrived at the appointed time and there was no Safeway clerk in or near the bakery. I pressed the button for help - 10 minutes no response and then walked to the front of the store seeking help. Eventually a manager came and brought me back to the bakery. They pulled my order and to my horror I received a cake that looked like a 5 year old decorated. Instead of reading what the cake was for they wrote on the cake the whole statement! Now I'm in a bind the event is the same day as the pick up. No one who works in bakery was there to speak with. I'm embarrassed to bring this cake and I was charged full price!!! If you enjoy waiting in long lines, having employees ignore you, having only about one or two checkstands opened up the entire day, and going down isles that are partially empty because they won't get refilled from the backstock, then this is the store for you! I honestly feel like it's more enjoyable to get my teeth polled or go to the dentist and is it go to the Safeway. I get beyond frustrated because of the short supply of just about the most random things (pre-COVID-19) and the difficulty of actually checking out of the store. Employees certainly don't help anything in this place. When it comes to Safeway, I will almost always go to the other local Safeway in this area instead. The Safeway on Patterson Road is a little better and it may be smaller, but I feel like it's easier to get around, and the employees are a little better to work with. read more

Not a big fan of this location. Bad line management and the worst is the self-checkout they have open. Interesting fact = alcohol can no go through the self-checkout line even with a clerk there. That's fine but don't be surprised when I leave it there since I'm not up on CA law. The clerk seemed amazed I was not going to move to the massive single line open to buy some eggnog. Horrible and overpriced organic produce! Went in specifically for organic strawberries (in season) guess what I found?- nothing but rotten, old and moldy strawberries for $5.00 a package!
